    Another nice video jom I think that’s the smallest town you showed us so far riding through those beach sand roads are no fun then you have to deal with Deerflies horseflies and whatever else can bite and sting And not to mention the washboard roads you have all the fun I am almost jealous take care and be safe .

    Great ride, thanks for taking us along. I did hear you use some of Ralph Stewart's (Home and Away) famous Aussie catch phrases, lol.

    Glad you survived all that washboard. Loose teeth will reveal themselves on sections like that! And a lovely sunset.

    Always a good time when you take us on a chill ride and become our tour guide. And that washboard sucks ass to ride anytime let alone on the last bit of miles.
    Keep the rubberside on the downside!

    You toured the Alachua County side of Hawthorne. Part of Hawthorne is in Putnam County, which is where I live. If I had known you were doing a bicycle tour of Hawthorne I would have invited you over to our house for a visit. We live on a small lake way out in the woods at the end of a dirt road. It’s quite beautiful here. We have a lot of wildlife visit us in our yard. I think you would have enjoyed a visit and a glass of sweet tea.

      Thank you John, appreciate the gesture. It is indeed a beautiful area.

      @ John Welch… what’s the difference in Alachua & Putnam County ex: housing, schools, crime? You mentioned wildlife, do you also encounter alligators living on the lake?

      @@GrandmaPeachesDynasty Both parts of Hawthorne are vert low crime. The part in Alachua county has the business district and most of the stores, etc, whereas the Putnam Co. side is much more woodsy and rural. I can't speak on the schools because I moved there at 55 years old, it's been many years since I've had school age kids, and I didn't go to school here myself. I would guess, however, that the schools are safe. Haven't seen any gators yet but lots of birds, fowl, deer, small critters, turtles, snakes, etc.

      @@JohnHWelch63 Thank you! I’m now retired & looking to relocate or at least become a Snowbird… far away from the Midwest winters

      @@GrandmaPeachesDynasty FYI, if you want to move to Florida and are looking for the traditional idea of what everyone thinks Florida is like (beaches, sun, pina coladas), that is not Hawthorne or anywhere in north Florida. If you want to know what it's like here, think small town Georgia or Alabama. The deep south culture bleeds down into north Florida. It's a very back woods country lifestyle here and most people speak with a deep south southern drawl. Lot's of hunting, fishing and 4 wheel drive pickups LOL. If you want traditional Florida move somewhere south of Orlando. It's two different states. There are also somethings you would need to acclimate to. It is hot and humid all but about 4 months a year in winter. There are lot of bugs, especially Plametto Bugs (Giant Cockroaches), and some poisonous snakes and spiders you need to watch out for, although it's very rare to encounter a poisonous creature. There is a rainy season in spring when it can sometimes rain relentlessly for a couple of weeks. When I say rain. I mean sometimes you have to pull your car over because it's raining so hard you can't see in front of you. There is always the chance of a hurricane in summer/early fall. I haven't been through one yet, but there is always that chance. Florida is nice, but there are some negative things about it.

    You really do live in a beautiful part of the world, JOM! The big swampy bits of water, are they home to alligator?

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andrew, alligators are definitely prevalent in lakes and so on.... sometimes they to wander, I've seen a few smaller ones residing in retention ponds. Hoping to never have an alligator encounter!

    Love those live oaks! That trail between Gainesville and Hawthorne looks cool, although not as cool as those dirt roads.

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, that trail is nice to roll around on, but insignificant vs those roads!

    Really enjoyed watching you just cycling through this town, and especially through the gravel/dirt paths. That the kind of stuff I want to do when I get my gravel bike I’m a few weeks time (long delays due to Covid). Hopefully I can get similarly interesting paths in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Can I ask how you discover and plan your routes? Do you use a Garmin or wahoo?

    • @ShakeelNaim

      Update: just spotted the Wahoo at the end of the vid

    • @GravelCyclist

      Hi there, I use ridewithgps.com for much of the planning, and utilise local maps from the county office to go deeper. Garmin is my preferred computer, but I often run two computers, in this case a Garmin and Wahoo together. I like to keep one running stats, the other on navigation. Garmin is definitely my preferred navigation device. Good luck with your new bike (hope it arrives ASAP).

      Gravel Cyclist thanks for the info, glad to hear Garmin is your preferred option as that is what I would prefer to get too. Oh and the bike I’ve ordered is a Diverge Expert and I’ve just come across your video of that :). Just over 3 weeks to go before I get my hands on it :)
