    This may be the best bike trail in northeast Florida. Its ecological diversity is amazing. It traverses a multitude of ancient pliocene, north-south beach ridges that parallel each other. At the high points (ridges) are mesic hardwood forests or pine forests. At the low points are cypress-gum swamps with an understory of ferns. At the eastern end is a section of limestone karst topography with considerable relief and lots of curves. From swale to summit of the beach ridges takes about 0.5 mile each time and the elevation gain or loss is probably about 20 feet. More than half of the trail is within the long protected forests of the Paynes Prairie State Preserve. And the BBQ place in Hawthorne is a welcome treat.

    Thanks for the fun video. I enjoy your channel. I’m traveling to Florida in February from a cold northern state. Biking is part of the plan. If you had to chose between this Gainesville to Hawthorn trail or the Withlacoochee near Inverness, Fl (watched you video on that too) which one would you choose? Hills are not a problem. Which is prettier or more fun? If you have another trail you’d recommend more highly that would be great too!

      Will plan to ride the St. Mark’s trail in February too. Thank you.

      Hello! We definitely prefer the Gainesville to Hawthorn trail, especially since you get to see the live gators. That was so fun and at one of the overlooks there were wild horses. There is a side trail that we didn’t have time for this time, but it takes you right down to where dozens of huge gators are. It’s an amazing sight! I don’t think you can take your bike the entire way down, but you can lock it up and walk. One of my other favorites is the St. Marks to Tallahassee trail. There’s a video on that one as well. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Have a safe trip!

      @@TroyandAndrea Hi again,
      My wife and I rode this trail yesterday. Sunny and 60 degrees. Trail was smooth and fun. Thank you for creating your videos and sharing this trail.

    Great video. Just came across your channel. New subscriber. Do you know if there are any bike rentals nearby for that trail?

    • @TroyandAndrea
      @TroyandAndrea  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And thank you so much for subscribing! We visited David’s World Cycling in Gainesville and I think they had bikes for rent. Of course, with the bike shortages everywhere, it limits your options. Give them a call first, they were friendly to us!

    Is there a place to rent bicycles near or on the trail?

    • @TroyandAndrea
      @TroyandAndrea  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just did a quick internet search and found a couple of places that do rent bikes in Gainesville, which is one of the trail. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    Great video. Definitely want to ride this trail. My wife and I did the Withlacoochee after watching one of your videos. Are there places to stop along the way to like have a picnic?

    • @TroyandAndrea
      @TroyandAndrea  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Barry! That's exciting! So glad our videos were helpful for you. The answer is "Yes!" There are several places along the trail to stop and picnic - especially on the spur trails. They have places to sit. Thanks so much for watching!

    I want to hike this trail. Can I take a bus 🚃 back to my car 🚗?

    • @TroyandAndrea
      @TroyandAndrea  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Estabania C - I searched for bus routes between Gainesville and Hawthorne and only found local bus routes around Gainesville. You might try the Greyhound Bus website to see if they have any routes linking the two. Happy hiking!
