    From Wiki
    The Big Lebowski (/ləˈbaʊski/) is a 1998 crime comedy film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity, then learns that a millionaire, also named Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston), was the intended victim. The millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is kidnapped, and millionaire Lebowski commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release. The plan goes awry when the Dude's friend, Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), schemes to keep the ransom money for the Dude and himself. Sam Elliott, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, David Thewlis, Peter Stormare, Jon Polito, and Ben Gazzara also appear in supporting roles.
    The film is loosely inspired by the work of Raymond Chandler. Joel Coen stated, "We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story - how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that's ultimately unimportant".[5] The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen brothers.
    The Big Lebowski received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Over time, reviews have become largely positive, and the film has become a cult favorite,[6] noted for its eccentric characters, comedic dream sequences, idiosyncratic dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack.[7] In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A spin-off, titled The Jesus Rolls, was released in 2020, with Turturro reprising his role and also serving as writer and director.[8][9][10]

    I don't think anybody really "gets" this movie the first time they see it, but it's one of my favorites now. I think the reason so many people like it is because it's almost like a parody of noir mystery, only there's no self-awareness. It keeps thinking it's a serious movie even though the most absurd things go right on happening, and I think the filmmakers do a great job keeping it all together. I've seen it several times and it really is quite funny.

      I think the absurd is primal-y relatable to people from all backgrounds(as long as the language barrier is taken care of) I think most of us when we watch the dominoes fall in our lives in the most improbable ways to interrupt our best laid plans specifically, it kind of just makes you stop and go “What the fuck?” I can at least say for myself that at that point I’d rather just dip out than get more stuck in. Just leave me be powers that be 😂

      This movie became my #2 all time (only behind The Blues Brothers) the moment I saw it. First Coen Bros. movie was Raising Arizona in the theater. I don't know if I can call them geniuses, but at the very least, they are brilliant! Great stories, even better characters. Think there is two (or three) films I've yet to see, but their work is pretty solid. 🤙

    This is my favorite comedy of all time. It's non standard dialogue, is a lot more clever than you think on first watch. There are subversive political elements with the first Gulf War film, the weird connection to the 60's and counter culture, and the fact that all the side characters are so interesting and strange. I like when movies are not predictable, where there is not a plot armor and when I saw this in the theater, I was stunned (and other people walked out) lol.

    Some movies are plot driven; some are character driven. This one was driven by both. One just has to accept the collection of quirky characters that found their way into the Dude's life upon Bunny's unannounced departure, involving their pursuit of money, a very real motivation to behave aggressively relative to the Dude's laidback style. A number of later scenes have elements from earlier scenes that are picked up upon at a second viewing.

    This is one of the wittiest written comedies ever, but unfortunately it's probably lost on anyone who isn't familiar with 90s American culture and dialect. I noticed you missed a LOT of the underlying and subtle comedy aspects written into the script. But then again, even Americans say they didn't like the movie until a rewatch. It's actually something this film has always been noted for. It did horrible at the box office when it came out, but became an underground and now a massively followed cult film.
    The Cohen brothers have always been known for having the type of comedy that takes a bit of thinking to really understand and easy to miss initially. But just like their other acclaimed films like Fargo, thres also a lot of Americana written in that may not make sense to everyone

    To be fair to Walter, most Americans around my age knew a few guys who were sent to Vietnam. Of the ones who came back many saw things nobody should have to see. Many just aren't the same guy who went there. They came back damaged, some in ways you can see, some in ways you can't.
    Inside Walter is that 19 year old kid who got shipped off and desperately just wants to be "normal", without ever thinking or talking about Vietnam, without the anger issues or the fear. They just want to turn back the clock, never having been damaged but they can't.

    It's eccentric characters taking absurd situations seriously. Maybe there's something I'm forgetting, but off the top of my head, I'd put it in my top three favorite comedies of all time, with _Airplane!_ and _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ and it may well be my very favorite of the bunch. I think _The Big Lebowski_ is a bit too weird for some people, and others have a hard time with it because they find the plot confusing (though I don't think that following every facet of the plot is actually that important for this particular movie), but I think it's a brilliant piece of cinema. I have seen people just get annoyed with Walter, and I can understand liking the movie a lot less if that's the case, because I think he's honestly the best character, which is saying a lot. [Edited to fix formatting.]

    • @weebitreacts
      @weebitreacts  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a very interesting point you make, I (Colin) never really thought of it that way but I totally get it now. I think because it's not as self aware as Monty.... Or Airplane it's easy to miss how silly it is. Thank you.

    • @stuffyouotterlistento1461
      @stuffyouotterlistento1461 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@weebitreacts Yeah, those other two movies are very meta and there isn't much integrity to their plots, because the humor is all that's important. The Big Lebowski, as crazy as it is from a real life context, cares about the plot, which makes it a good deal more grounded/restrained. I do think it shares a certain deadpan quality with _Airplane!_ though, even if it hits a bit differently given their differing levels of realism.

      You could write a whole thesis just on Walter's character. He is a parable of the Vietnam War. He's like a bull in a China shop, doesn't have an exit strategy, totally non-proportional responses to conflict. So funny how he screams at Donnie, waitresses and a mute teenager, but is totally emotionless and non-plussed when threated and mocked by his nemesis, Jesus. He's almost always wrong. He has the breed of his exes' Yorkshire Terrier wrong. He claims to care good care of it because it is a show dog, but you can see it running off in the parking lot in the background when they get in the car. But, like a broken clock, he does get a couple of things right. Another brilliantly written character by the Coen brothers.

    The Most Quotable Film of All Time
    Those Coen brothers have an ear for language. You feel it in the sing-songy banalities of Fargo, and in the noiresque machine-gun dialogue of Miller's Crossing, but neither of these can prepare you for the feast for the ears that is The Big Lebowski.
    Channeling the opaque mysteries of Raymond Chandler, the Coens throw LA resident bum and Bowling aficionado Jeff Lebowski ("The Dude" to his friends) into a strange triple-crossing case of kidnapping, ransoms, nihilists and urinated-upon rugs. It is the equivalent of throwing unrelenting forces at an immovable object, the Dude's bemused stoicism at constant odds with the world around him. He'd much rather be bowling with crazed Vietnam Vet Walter (John Goodman) and pure silent soul Donnie (Steve Buscemi).
    As with so much of the Coens' output, style is more than half the point: not just visual, though ace DP Roger Deakins paints an alluring canvas, but tonal and auditory. This is an insanely funny head-trip of a movie, with wonderfully idiosyncratic characters, down to the smallest part. Who better than the Coens to reinvent the comedy of errors?
    This is without a doubt one of their very best, a personal favorite, an unmissable film and the kind of experience that will plant an indelible smile on your face. Do yourself and see this now, if you haven't already.

    Not sure you're getting some of the cultural reference jokes here. You have some freaky accents that suggest you're from out of town.

    i disagree - it does not seem to be past its prime. it is what it always was: a movie that appealed to a subset of the population. its point is...there is no point. there certainly has been a bit more favor given to the concrete plots and unambiguous endings recently, but i still see about the same proportion of folks liking and disliking (or meh-ing) this movie.

      So true. Great movies are timeless. You can have favorite styles and eras and directors, but if you can't appreciate movies from the past at all, you're not a true film buff.

    "Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man."
    Fun Fact: With the exception of The Dude (Jeff Bridges) helping Maude (Julianne Moore) bowl in a fantasy, The Dude is never actually seen bowling once.
    The Real Dude Fact: A lot of the Dude's clothes in the movie were Jeff Bridges's own clothes, including his Jellies sandals, which he reportedly still owns and uses to this very day.
    Big Paraquat Fact: In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, John Goodman stated that The Dude (Jeff Bridges) referring to The Big Lebowski (David Hiddleston) as a "human paraquat" was one of the only improvised lines to make it into the final film. Virtually every other line was scripted.

      Paraquat was a “pesticide/herbicide/poison” the Nixon administration sprayed on various foreign marijuana plantations to keep 1960s antiwar hippies like The Dude from getting high. To a stoner, human paraquat is as low as you can go.

      @@YoureMrLebowski Reactions to actors that were in OTHER movies is reacting to WHAT movie?
      People react in the movie theater. To talk about other crap unrelated to the actual movie is distracting of the REACTORS FROM the actual movie. They would totally miss what the movie is about if it were "Miller's Crossing," because every detail -- not all of them broadcast -- matters in order to understand what is happening.
