A theory I've heard about this film is that the cowboy/narrator is supposed to be God. And the reason he is fond of the Dude is because he represented man as God intended him to be. Unlike the people around him, he's not driven by greed or pride, he's not bitter, he's not vindictive or cruel. He's not embarrased by his appearance nor is he indifferent to the plight or feelings of others. And he doesn't crave the approval or acceptance of his peers. The dude is just happy to bask in the garden.

A couple of fun facts; Jeff Bridges claimed The Dude was pretty much who he'd been in the 1970s. He asked the Coen brothers after reading the script "Did you guys hang out with me in high school?"
An inspiration for the character of Walter is the Coen Brothers' friend, writer and director John Milius, with his obsession with all things militaristic, and an enthusiasm for guns, claims to be obsessed with the Vietnam War and also has very similar look to Walter himself.
One of the nihilists was played by the bassist from Red Hot Chili Peppers.
There are a number of fan theories also, one is about The Dude being The big Lebowski's Son. After the older Lebowski fathered an illegitimate son with his housemaid, she threatened to reveal their relationship to his wife. He pays her to keep quiet, and The Dude's mom uses this payment to create a trust fund for her son wich would explain why the Dude can do everything he does all day without having a real job..
Another theory is about Donny being a figment of Walter's imagination. "Walter is struggling with PTSD after his service in the Vietnam War, and Donny was perhaps a friend that he lost who Walter is now able to see and interact with. This theory is supported by the fact that, save for a few subtle occasions, Walter is the only one that interacts with Donny."
One theory suggests Walter is hallucinating all of his friends' presence. "His delusions are aided by the people who work and bowl at the alley." The friends representing his fractured self; The Dude being a "laid back, easy-going old Stoner". "Donny represents Walters childhood naiveté. He is constantly out of his element, always confused, easily frightened and anxiety ridden."

    You're right.
    This movie is perfect.
The more times I watch it, the more I realize that it's one of best movies I've ever seen.
It's too bad comedies don't get recognized like dramas do by the Oscars.
Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and even Steve Buscemi were all perfectly cast.
I still shed a tear for Donny at the end.
I cared for these cast of characters.
And YOU'RE reaction was by far the best I've seen on YT.
They don't make them like this anymore.
    Thank you Coen Brothers.

That final scene is quite amazing. One long take from Dude ordering his drinks, talking to the barman, then talking to the Stranger, then the Stranger's 4th wall break, to then pan up to a guy bowling a strike. If that guy missed that strike theyd have had to do it again!

Loved you review. I was lucky to see this gem in the theatre in Norway when it came out. The poster had a sticker that read "Recommended by the Norwegian Bowling Association". What's great about this movie is that even the actors with tiny roles get a chance to shine. Like the cab driver, the detective, and the police officer where he picks up his car. There are so many memorable one-liners in this film, but my favorite is when Pilar says "Oh no....he got health problem". Biggest understatement ever !!

Glad you loved it! It’s one of the few films that gets better with every viewing because the real star is the script: the wordplay, for example the fact that certain phrases repeat in different contexts (“this aggression will not stand, man!”), is genius throughout. Bridges has said that he almost never rewatches his own films but if he catches this one before it gets to Turturro’s first Jesus scene, he has to watch at least long enough to see that brilliant cameo.

You're so right, every aspect of this movie is brilliant filmmaking. It's a crime Bridges wasn't nominated for an Oscar. It's no coincidence that Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo never stopped talking, but in Lebowski (2 yrs later) rarely said a word! Coen Bros are amazing. True Grit and Burn After Reading are underrated!

Speaking of writers, the actors followed the script to the last 'uh" and f-word. That bit where Bridges is fumfering around in the Big Lebowski's limousine? "What am I blathering about?" etc? Word for word. I was shocked that there were virtually no ad-libs in a movie that seems to consist only of ad-libs. The Coens were incredible screenwriters. They need to get back together, dang it. Anyway, GREAT review!

One of the most obvious observations people make is the repetition of language, and essentially The Dude being an empty vessel regurgitating phrases he's only just recently heard. How does that seem ad-libbed? Having a tight script is absolutely necessary to the film.

I saw this movie the week it came out on VHS in the 90s. It blew me away then & I still love it today. I really enjoyed your enjoying it. Reactions are a way to kind of watch a movie again for the first time thru new eyes. If that makes sense. You painting out the movie was noirish was spot on as one of the main influences for this movie was The Big Sleep starting Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall. As a story, the movie is hard to follow & at times makes no sense, but the heat generated by Bogie & Bacall made it an all-time classic. If you've never seen The Big Sleep, I highly recommend it.

The sheer amount of joy and laughter this movie gave me and my friends from the endlessly quotable lines is something for which i will forever be grateful. I still remember the first time i saw it I was 17 and i think i started watching it at like 2am. I watched the whole thing, understood nothing, was probably bored, and i don't know if i laughed at all. Then maybe 5 years later i watched it stoned with friends and fell in love. He is one of the kindest and funniest people I ever met. When I was at Joliet Prison in Joliet Illinois. His car rolled up, he rolls down his window and has his hand out hi I’m Peter. I shook his hand. I still have his paper he handed to me for a bar party he threw in Chicago. I went to the party. His mom was at the party as well and got to meet her. She was so kind.
