    You made your dog so vivid and alive looking, yet at the same time painterly, which is a skill I admire so much! Wonderful job on the paintings. I never tried gouache before, but im considering trying it out, so thank you for the tips, watching you paint has revealed some things about it to me. Thank you for sharing!!! Lots of love!

      Jojo Moyes I would say that it means 'a bit not so realistic and detailed looking', with less smooth transitions and more blocked out color patches. c:

    If you use watercolor and want to try gouache, you can also just buy a tube of white and mix it with your watercolors! Winsor and Newton sells a primary set of designer gouache for around $20 on Amazon as well.

    Those Holbeins are the best!
    Edit: Let me just say, the tip about cheap paint.... don't do it! You said yourself in the video you can tell the quality of the paint. Holbein gouache is a bit on the premium side, yes, but this is due to the greater amount of pigment in the paint. This allows not only more vivid colors, but a more spreadable and workable painting medium, which also allows better coverage. Those small Holbein tubes will go a long way.
    Cheaper paints will require more paint volume ratio, and will tend to break apart particularly when it comes to washes. I always regretted cheapening out on paint quality. You're lucky to start out with the good stuff :D

    I agree with what you said about moleskines! A friend gave the classic one to me as gift and I ended up using it for writing since the pages are so thin. Then I bought two small ones, one for sketching and one for watercolor. I also tought that the paper on the sketching one was a bit too smooth, but I love the watercolor sketchbook. Give it a try if you can someday, maybe buy the smaller one so that it won't be so expensive :)
    I use a lot of water on my paintings and the pages don't warp. Also the paper has more texture and it's so nice to use pencil on it. I used gouache on it and it holds well. I haven't tried too many watercolor sketchbooks, but this one was worth the price for me.

    I'm running out of white. I've been doing a sketch that turned into a full painting, a portrait of my girlfriend, and yeah, I really need to buy more whites. So, it's true. With gouache you need to stockpile a lot of white paints.
    I'll probably try to mix odd colors on my paper with acrylics and then try to paint over it with gouache just like James Gurney does it (he does it with casein) just to try experiment more. Acryla Gouache and Casein is non-existent in my country, so, I'll probably try to mix things here and there. Anyway, awesome video and excellent painting! Keep up the good work!

    Love your dog paintings. He's a cutie. I think when you talk about "acrylic gouache" you may be referring to how some painters mix their gouache with acrylic... or possibly casein paints, which are opaque like the gouache, but don't reconstitute. I sometimes use casein as a base layer

    You can water down acrylic safely on paper or wood it’s fine. It’s on shiny surfaces like primed canvas it looses its structural integrity. The advantage of gouache is the creamy ness and the fact that it has a matte finish and acrylic is glossy.

    I like to use dollar store sketchbooks. Do the pages warp? Yep. Do the pages handle water well? Nor really. Why do I use it? It's cheap so I don't fear I will ruin it. The pages are kind of a creamy color, I hate pure white pages to work with. It makes me feel free to experiment. But I made my own watercolor sketchbook with a watercolor paper pad that I simply perfurated with Lavenger punch and put together with Staples Arc discs. For the cover I cut down a plastic mat from the dollar store and punch it. Since I started it with the big discs, this sketchbook will require more sheets to beome full but I can do it little by little putting other types of paper too. Not sure if that's something you would like to try

    I was painting with gouache my entire life because it's kind of a go to medium in where I live, and I didn't like watercolour that much. But recently I tried to paint with tempera and it's gorgeous! Since I prefer to paint thicker, I didn't like how unstable gouache can be and how lighter coluors always tend to raise on top, which isn't possible with tempera

      Bai Bai in my opinion if you draw everything slowly and you want to keep all the paints still wet till the end of your drawing then stick with oil paints, but one down side (well at least for me) is that oil paints stink real bad.

    • @ptaylor4923
      @ptaylor4923 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm just a beginner, but I've been using Gouache. It's very forgiving & dries fast so if you're layering (graisalle or tiling) you don't have to wait as long between layers. One important thing is to start thin. If you start heaping on thick gouache it will crack, so lower layers should be thin & then you can go thicker. If you don't want to reactivate the lower layer, make sure your brush isn't too wet on the layer above. And if you screw up with Gouache you can paint over it, because it's an opaque watercolor. Acrylics will be brighter, oils will look a little richer. And practice with your lights & darks on a separate sheet of the same type of paper. You'll find lights dry darker and darks dry lighter than you expect, so experiment. If you use a fixative on gouache, it will look less like a matte finish & brighten the painting some. Depending upon how you want to paint her & in what setting, you can go either way. If you want to brighten the painting, you can use the primaries & make it multimedia by brightening it more by using pastels to highlight & accent some colors

    I use Savoir faire, which is a fairly cheap student grade gouache. It was $13 for the whole set, and I think they're perfect for starting out, and they build very well. Some of my classmates bought Reeves, and personally, I think the SF lay down nicer and blend better, but again, that's just me. If anyone has used the Windsor newton gouache please let me know what you think! I'm going to get a large tube of their white gouache because I ran out of the small tube in like a week.
