  • Buying a miniature poodle - what nobody told us
Of course, before Moki moved in, we thought a lot about what could happen and how he would behave. In the following we describe what we expected, but what didn’t happen at all and what completely surprised us:

My miniature poodle is calm and loyal. I work from home. He is OK when I go out, no howling, perhaps he is mirroring my calmness. Love him.

In the example where you're training him to not cry when you leave, your partner should reward him as soon as you walk away and Moki is not crying. And you have to do small distances first and then increase distances.
Always reward the tiniest of improvements.
It's like when you're learning to handstand, you won't go straight into a handstand without leaning on a wall first, at least most beginners won't.
Breaking things up like that is the most efficient and effective way to teach/unteach your dog a behaviour 😃

All my poodles needed to learn to be alone. I started with small steps. First the crate was where people were. Then the crate was moved to where the dog could see us but could not interact at all. Across the biggest room. Then the crate was moved to another room where the dog could hear us but not see us. Then the room door was closed. It's important not to reward crying or complaining. Ignore the dog until it is quiet even if it takes all day. Only release the dog when it is relaxed and quiet. Calmly praise dog for quiet. Do that often when quiet.
The next step is to have the dog loose in the house. You leave without any comment. Stay on the other side of the door until the dog is quiet. Return and calmly praise dog. Then move away from the door to where the dog cannot see, hear or smell you. Return only when the dog is quiet. Praise the dog. Lengthen the time away.
Never return to barking or whining. Never excite dog on return, but praise calmly. Eventually, perhaps over several weeks, short separation training sessions followed by calm returns result in the dog learning confidence and patience.
I was able to train my needy schnauzer to stay home alone for half a day or longer without anxiety. But she never did well in daycare in an environment that was not hers and overnight away was always a problem. A housesitter was a better solution than removing her from her home when I needed to be away over night. All my other dogs were able to be away from home for a week at a time and they were fine.
Too much attention makes dogs nervous. They begin to depend on you and crave constant attention. It's better to be calm, firm, insistent about your requirements and train in short periods, then lengthening the time you require a behavior to be accomplished.
My household rules always were no dogs on furniture ever. Dogs sleep in their own bed in a crate. Walks are longer than 15 minutes for small dogs. More like half an hour twice daily. Short walks to the preferred "spot" are acceptable in between the 2 long walks early morning 6:00 a.m or 7:00 a.m.) and late at night (10:00 p.m.). Dogs are never rewarded for barking indoors. Dogs must sit and wait before food is allowed to be eaten. My dogs got play time with me when I interacted without training just for fun, but training sessions were all business. All outside walks were on leash and always all business, even when jogging or running. I puppy proofed my home and had a playpen but later I never put my collectibles away. My dogs learned what they could touch and what was mine. Even my cats learned what they could touch and where they were allowed to walk.

I have a 13yo miniature poodle Leo, with the same colour as Moki and he was exactly like your Moki when he was younger. He has matured and has his own idiosyncrasies. They love structure and so having a set time for eating, walking, play and sleep keeps them calm. Love poodles!

I have had many, many dogs in my life, and my favorite is and will always be the Standard Poodle. We adopted an adult male St Poodle many years ago, sadly we only had 12 years with him... he passed away at 14 years of age from heart disease, even when he was old he had lots of energy. He had the best personality of all the breeds I've had. And all the behaviors you describe of your dog he also had. We will definitely adopt another Poodle at some point.

You Fur Baby is absolutely Beautiful!!!
You made a very wise choice with a Poodle. A Poodle of any size, is going to have all the qualities you have mentioned and then some!! They are Highly intelligent, easily trained, and loyal to the nth degree!!! I have had Poodles all of my life, and I cannot imagine not having a Poodle to love each and everyday. Please do NOT try and break her from fussing when her Master walks away!!! The BOND between the two of you is not to be broken!!! She loves everyone in the Family, but YOU are her world!! Mine goes to the bathroom with me every day, all day. That’s just how it is. Usually ad long as they are in the same room with you they will be fine. But when you set down, expect to have your lap invaded!! This Dog is in love with you, and I pray the feeling is mutual!!! What a Beautiful and Wonderful Creature you have there!!!

I now see how luckey I am that my dog doesn't have separation anxiety 😮 or overexcitment. I see it is much more common than Inhave expected. And she also doesn't bark when people are ringing the door bell, she just waggs her tail happily.

I had pretty much same experiences with out poodle. She also had up to 6 accidents, slept through night from the beginning, also eats rather less than I would like, but she is not overly excited, adores all dogs but knows quickly if they aren't into it. She is never alone but is fine if one of us leaves. I think she would do good alone but I'm not sure.

I had a standard poodle. She was playful, loving dog with a calm demeanor and wanted to please us so she rarely misbehaved. It seems like you expected the worst which was a disservice to Moki. Poodle are so easy to train. If you had issues training, read a book to do it properly. Many when dogs do bad things it’s because the owners don’t understand how the brain of s dog works. For example, dogs don’t need three meals a day. One small meal and one large meal (dinner) 8-12 hours after the small meal. If Moki is stressing you out (you’re not having fun) you’re doing it wrong. Not dissing on you, just letting you know that you might have to crack a book to learn how to have fun doing the things you might think are work; like training. Training should be fun and games for you and your pup and he will learn quickly and retain it longer.

Aww Moki is adorable; I have a 17-week-old at the moment she is very quiet but I expected her to be more vocal, perhaps that to come. Like Moki she does kick up a fuss if I leave the room. Nutmeg is learning the hard way too that not all dogs want to play especially the older ones.

Moki is gorgeous. It is so lovely to see people really getting into training a small dog. A lot of small dog owners don’t really seem to be bothered because they can just pick them up. We have a standard poodle and he is not food motivated at all. I spent the first two years stressing about trying to find something he would eat consistently. He is now five and has been eating well the last three years. By well I mean about 5 nights a week. I don’t stress anymore when he doesn’t eat - he will tomorrow. And yes, if I leave him when we are out, to pay for the coffees or go to the toilet, even if it is my husband or my closest friend who knows him really well, he whines. And he is such a good dog, well trained and very responsive, but I cannot get him to stop this. Any tips much appreciated. Thank you for your video.

I have a 16 month old female miniature poodle/Bichon Frise mix (Pooshon). Your comment about your pup’s excitability matches my dog’s behaviour. She thinks everybody is her friend and especially on walks, we have to be firm and consistent when we meet other walkers as she tries to jump and dance around them. I also notice the food refusal and only eating small portions at a time. Some dogs can only be given smaller portions of food throughout the day or they will eat the whole bowl of food at one time. I never have to worry about that with Reilly. She also became housebroken and acclimatized to her kennel quickly. Lots of similarities noted:)

When my baby toy poodle & I 1st started living together, he peed in the house a few times. I just gave him lots of hugs, and he started using the doggydoor to go to the bathroom outside. That's what it said on google, and it worked! He's such a lovey little puppy. He enjoys treats, but bribery doesn't work; he just cooperates very easily for hugs and snuggles.

For the excitement of going out you can practice grabbing the leash and going back on the sofa or just walking around the house with it in your hand so that he doesn’t associate you grabbing the leash with going out. You can also put his collar or harness on and not going anywhere. The mix signals going to cause him to not know what is the next move and desensitize him to leash, collar and going out

I got my miniature poodle at six months of age , her BiG problem was shadow chasing ! I thought it was cute at first then realized it was an obsession . She couldn’t or wouldn’t hear me or respond if she was chasing shadows , she would chase any shadow that moved ! It was a very long process to train her not to do it . But I have succeeded . She is such a perfect dog in every way . But Shadow chasing was destroying her ! But anyone who has a dog with this problem let me tell you that it can be trained out !

  • @aprilwoods6271

Why do some people expect their pets to be perfect in every way, when I am quite sure they themselves are not perfect in every way? Love and kindness should always be given to any animal, remember they have been taken away from their birth mother, if you don’t want the animal re home it to a good home instead of complaining . Poodles are so loyal and frankly some people do not deserve them .

To prevent the whining when you're away you have to teach the puppies independence. If you're constantly cuddling and spoiling the puppy it will develop those habits. Allow them to sit on their beds without interacting with him and this will teach the dog self control.

She only LOVES MEAT PATE STYLE FOOD. I am going nuts. Otherwise, she is a dream dog! I couldn't have gotten a better puppy! I adore poodles, especially mine,

@@sensationallyyours6520 after nearly a year I worked out my poodle is allergic to carrot. Carrot is in most commercially produced dog food. It was a nightmare because she was constantly getting sick with constipation, diarrhoea and vomiting. Understandably she didn't want to eat it. I now boil chicken and chop it up and put in small containers with the broth to freeze. I also make meatballs in serving size with minced meat, rice, grated veg, egg, healthy oil and a little breadcrumbs to bind and cook in the oven. I freeze these in 2-3 meal portions. The dog has a meatball for dinner and some of the chicken in the morning. I give her a multivitamin supplement to be sure she gets what she needs.

First two were clever, gentle and calm, but this third is crazy :), dominant, always hungry, barks just for barking, with no appearant reason, runs like a whippet, chases everything that moves, bullies the other (older and bigger) dog in a house, my friend says she is complete opposite than her two first miniature puddles. Only size and shape are the same, but she is, according to her owner, a Jack Russel in disguise.

I have a min poodle/Shih Tzu almost a year old. Mine is whiney when I go out of his site. He tries to control. I refuse his demands and he is getting better. Outside potty has been successful as to peeing. I can keep him outside for a long time, but to do his business, he will hold it and come in and run to his potty pad. I am working on a new strategy and hope my new system will work. I am retired so time is on my side. Your puppy is precious. Mine sleeps all night and has since we brought him home. I am teaching him words. And he catches on very fast. He doesn’t eat a full meal. He snacks. And he takes the food out of his bowl and places it on his placemat to eat each bite. He loves all other dogs and when he goes to the groomer, they don’t confine the dogs and he gets to play.

My late standard poodle was very quiet in the house, but taken to the beach, she race along and back repeatedly or to a field, she'd hurtle round the perimeter like a greyhound for quite a while before she calmed down, right up to when she was quite old. She loved her food, but had a mix of wet and dry. I think the dry biscuits may just bore them? Daisy would hoover up crumbs from under the table, I never realised how many until she was gone. I know some say dogs should have the same diet all the time, but why? Wild dogs eat a variety of food, as should we. Try a little cat food (higher meat or fish content than dog food). Always introduce new food gradually though, so their microbiome has a chance to adjust. Also Daisy adored a tablespoon of cod liver oil on her food, very good for the joints, she lived a long and healthy life for a standard, lasting until 14 and a half, when her back legs gave way, the average is 12 apparently for the biggies. I never had the whining or howling though. She was very good about being left if I had to go out, though she obviously preferred my company while at home.

Moki probably wants pouches of dog food/meat rather than dry pellets. I wouldn't eat it either.. Hes a puppy so wants to run around like a loony with other dogs and snuffle. Lovely 🤩

Lovely video. Our 1 year old miniature poodle is black and called Pepper Bear (there's a coincidence) has been pretty much the same as Moki, I like to think of Moki as his German cousin. Like Moki Pepper likes his crate, doesn't chew on things, was very quick to toilet train and so on. I should say however that his predecessor, also a miniature poodle was extremely difficult to toilet train (6 months of unexpected puddles) so that is not a guarantee. Pepper’s behaviour in the park is also so much like Moki, they run the same way (very fast) and seem to like dogs of all sizes, especially the big ones which are fun to chase. Unlike Moki, Pepper seems to be quite relaxed about being left alone but Moki seems better behaved. Time for another video of Moki being Moki.

I have a miniature poodle, he is two years old and his name is Lun. And everything described in the video - also applies to Lun. Especially the part about the excitement, he is perfectly calm in the house but as soon as he sees us going out, he goes crazy. And the part about fear of abandonment, oh yeah, there's no way I'm going to the bathroom without him. 😆 By the way, Moki is beautiful, he looks a lot like Lun, only Lun is gray. ❤

He was perfectly was though, don’t worry. No burns or sores, just a slight zap.

I got my standard poodle cross as a rescue dog aged 18 months. It took me quite a while to toilet train him, including not watering door posts. I have an existing female rescue dog (not poodle) who bosses him around & given him confidence. He loves to have cuddles but is fairly quiet. He's much more reactive to thunder & lightning than the other dog. He does get excited by seeing cats, birds or possums as they bring out the hunting instinct. Then he starts to yelp & dance on his hind legs. He is very sweet tempered but can be picky about his food, particularly in hot weather I only feed him once a day at night time with poodle specific kibble. Poodles like to graze on their food during the day but that doesn't work for me because my other dog is greedy & will steal his food. Bentley is now nearly 6 and is really enjoying his food after being away in a kennel for 7 weeks when he was put on a diet. You do have to watch weight on spayed dogs though so now I have to get more (but not too much) weight back on him. One issue that I have with him is bad breath and tartar on his teeth. Apparently the fur around their jaws can encourage bacteria so it's good to keep them clipped. His teeth are a bit softer because of his poorer start in life. Overall I have never regretted getting him.

Have had miniatures my whole life. The worst thing was the teeth issues. I felt so sorry every time they had to have them removed. Or the times they suffered not knowing they had a bad tooth. My last is 15 with only 4 teeth left. His tongue hangs out and is always dry. He is now too old for more surgery to remove the last of his poor teeth. I blame over vaccinations for this. One size fits all and so the small breeds suffer the most. One of my miniatures had epilepsy. I gave him skullcap herb and he never had them again. I am now waiting on my first Standard. Will not deal with poor little guys teeth rotting out of their heads. I work with a holistic vet long distance, no longer trust mainstream vets. But besides that I love the poodle. Just confused why the dilution of the breed these days with other dogs. Not a fan of that. Leave a good thing alone.

All small breed dogs have dental issues. They have the same number of teeth as the largest breed. The teeth are very overcrowded in their mouths. Why it's important to brush their teeth, get dentals done at vet as needed.

  • @daveroberts7295

My poodle cross, a mini bernedoodle, did suffer separation anxiety before I got him at 14months. Being retired I could spend a lot of time with him but did set aside some time to spend apart. I could tell him to `hold the fort`an we never had any tearful departures, he just goes into a calm mode and I leave, he doesn`t even follow me to the door. I am greeted by a calm happy fellow when I get home. He has never had a food issue. I mix up his food, 3 parts kibble with one part raw vegetables, sometimes cheese. He eats everything. He is calm in the car and enjoys rides, all the more if their is a vacant lap. Or he sleeps in the back seat. He has excellent manners about humans eating. He faces away or lies under the table. He does not steal food. He handles most other dogs well with only a few exceptions. Night encounters with 2 different dogs he gets upset. I have been working on it through calmly insisting he does not bark (TALK), and making him sit. I have made good headway with one dog, who is`nt in the least reactive,, I have never here her bark. The other dog too remains silent on street encounters but is noisy through fences. Having a dog is an endless adventure. Like children we try and keep them safe and entertained. They give us boundless love. Cheers.
