I saw John Mayer play this song with Dead & Company the day after my parents told me they were getting a divorce. I have never seen a performance live that fully encapsulated all of my emotions, and brought me to tears. It may be one of the most memorable and surreal moments of my life.

@@jacobdesersa4072 it's amazing. Equally amazing as Jerry driving across the San Rafael bridge during lightning and thinking of music for Terrapin Station while unbeknownst to him Hunter was watching the same lightning storm and writing lyrics for the song.

There's an interview where he says something to the tune of "those days won't come again..." and quickly amends it to "for me". Brilliant

@@kevinborchers3522 Very uncool thing to say about two beautiful souls that died giving us their whole world. Let me guess, you're perfect and have a legendary catalog to speak of, never did a drug or had any vices and have toured relentlessly, pouring your heart and soul out to thousands of fans night after night! Just to go back in a little room , then back on a bus and hang out with a dozen familiar faces and not be able to party and socialize with the rest of the heads, because you're too noticeable and popular ! Worst comment ever!

This song was the encore of my first show 7-16-90 in Buffalo. I still remember vividly the feeling of hearing it and then leaving the venue. Such a great way to end an experience like that. Ironic choosing a version with Clarence Clemons on his birthday. Check out Garcia Live 13 for a full show of JGB with the big man. Great stuff. One of my favorite openers of this era was Let the Good Times Roll. Always set the mood for a good time.

Jerry bled notes from the depths of the wellsprings of his/our being. When I lose faith in humanity, the tension between a melancholy loneliness and reaching out for a semblance of hope in these songs speak to my own internal contradictions and struggles, aimed at a better tomorrow. September of 1989 I saw Jerry Garcia Band with Bob Weir as an opener at Alpine Valley Wisconsin. Jerry did a song called Don't Let Go and Clarence was in the band that night. During the main lead, Jerry and Clarence got into a HUGE jazz jam and were trying to out-do each other. I believe Clarence finally gave in at the end. It went on forever and was epic. It was famous in the Dead community. Never could find a recording of that night.

(For one thing, I'd come to realize I simply hadn't the talent to be any sort of star.) Many more worlds since then, but I still love to play "Brokedown Palace" - and play it I do, nearly every day. First of all, so sorry for your loss, Michael. Secondly, I loved the chemistry between Brent and Jerry! They had that twinkle in their eyes. Brent would push Jerry and he needed that sometimes! You could even detect a bit of mischief there sometimes, and Jerry ate it up! They just had some magic! Jerry even moved stage side from his traditional stage right/house left, and Phil moved over there. I will agree that The Big Man did seem to have a bit of trouble there, but this is still a nice version of a great song. For supreme sax work with the Dead look no further than the many occasions that Branford Marsalis sat in! Must see/hear Dead!

    • @emechem

Yeah I always wonder how much the musicians who sit in already know the material, vs. picking it up for the first time live. I agree that Clarence did not quite go all out, but he did pick up the chord changes enough to have a nice tasteful in-tune expressive solo. The part where he kind of held back instead of going high, it was cool to see Brent picking that up & covering those high notes Clarence's solo was kind of implying would come next, right after Clarence kind of backed down & got more conservative, right at the end of the solo. Again, totally impressive to see people sitting in with a band they don't play with regularly & playing a song they presumably don't know that well.

That clip was from a live Pay Per View special and I think the concert ran a few bars over the satellite link up limit they had! So on the live special, the whole last refrain just faded out and video feed went to black before it was finished! I taped it on my old VHS back in the day - and still have it digitized on my computer. This may be the first time I’ve heard the whole performance and “thank you” tag from Jerry!!
Anyway, check out the Deal 1set closer from this show - smoking hot, and the Hell In A Bucket to open the 2nd. Jerry en fuego! This show also has a very nice Dew towards the end of the 2nd set. As for Clarence - he fares much better with the RnB standards of the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire. Sounds like he was reaching for a couple notes on Brokedown that are beyond the range of his instrument!
    Thanks for the vids, man...

Sorry to hear about your loss Michael. I can see in your face that your soul is in pain and are having a difficult time. Thank you for continuing to bring us videos despite the loss you are experiencing. The music will help you heal brother. One of the beautiful gifts of the dead is the amazing ability to heal and see things in a new positive light. Thank you for doing what you do. You are making a positive impact on people’s lives whether you realize it or not.

You really need to react to Wharf Rat from 7/7/89/. And sorry for your loss. I listened to Brokedown Palace when my Grandpa and an uncle passed away from Covid a couple of weeks ago. It is the perfect song for those times.

Thanks MIke and since you are relatively new to the scene, I'll mention that this tune, To Lay Me Down and Ripple were written on the same day. Just doesn't seem possible but that is what has been stated by R. Hunter

Good tune and it's got a CCR: Long As I Can See The Light vibe to it, which is another good tune.

Stella blue 6-14-91. Try listening without watching. It’s what we played when Jerry passed. Out by the ocean. Under the full moon.
    Perfect.
