Robert Hunter was so good that even Bob Dylan asked him to write lyrics for the songs on his Together Through Life album (#33)
Branford Marsalis is absolutely amazing. He plays on Don Henley’s end of the innocence and plays all over Sting’s album The Dream of the Blue Turtles. He just ties it all together so well.
Branford played with the Dead on 5 occasions. Here's some quotes from him on those shows:
“Those guys can play music. They’re much better than most people give them credit for. They have big ears and real chops, and they’ve got 18,000 tie-dyes dancing along. I’d never seen anything like it. … They’re fantastic.” (McNally, WALSTIB, p. 582)
“Phil was playing in one tempo, the drummers were playing in another, and Jerry was in another - there were three different tempos going - actually Jerry wasn’t even in a tempo. I love playing like that.” (As quoted in an essay by Blair Jackson contained in the Spring 1990 [The Other One] box set book, p. 57)
Branford even wrote a thank-you note to the band after the show, which he graciously allowed them to share: “On Thursday night I had the best time I’ve had in my entire life. I now know that playing rock and roll can be all that I have envisioned it would be”
@rmhanseniii I think the "big ears" comment is him saying just the opposite.
Sweet quotes, man.
I was lucky to see 3 of them - I also saw the 09/10/91 & 12/10/93 (my 30th bday show 😛) - fun nights for sure
What's really amazing is that not only had Branford never practiced this song, he had never even heard it before playing along with just his jazz chops to lean on.
I once heard Bran say that most other jazz musicians couldnt do it as they really dont know how to go w the flow, dont understand mood. That most jazz musicians are too clinical. His New Orleans background was why he could figure things out on the fly.
@@rhlang11 Branford is “just tell me what key & time we’re playing in” and I’ll figure out the rest
@JB-Deadskins They told him to stick around for Dark Star. He asked what that is, and Jerry said, "Don't worry, you'll like it."
@crackerbarreljones yeah, he said it's just A and G, and we just jam on it.
@@JB-Deadskins God, they were the best~
I was at this show! March 29, ‘90. Branford’s first sit in with the dead. Phenominal show! Mind melting!
One of the best versions. They were the greatest live recording band in every era but the late 80s and 90s were so special in my ears!
That's Branford on sax. Epic show~
And Phil 🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️👽👽👽
Concert Regret time....they were returning to Nassau after a spell away due to excessive police activity. College buddy of mine had tickets for all three nights owed me a favor and told me to pick a night...the final night was going to be on the radioand this night 3/29 was on the same day as an exam and I couldn't miss it so I chose the first night, while a great show...wasn't that 2nd night with Branford Marsalies...haunts me to this day.......
That's Jerry playing the flute with the MIDI on his guitar
Jerry was a frustrated “Horn Player” 🎶🎶
With the addition of Branford Marsalis it makes this one of the best versions of "Eyes" ever put on tape. As JB says, he had never even heard the song, or rehearsed with The Dead, he just did it, in keeping with their improv principles. This show was at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., home of the NHL's N.Y. Islanders.
Branford Marseilles on sax, check his vide being interviewed and asked about sitting in with the Dead.
Good stuff
Nobody else does this kind of easy-flowing, sympathetic interplay so well, imo. Perfect if a friend or someone dosed you and good-vibes are paramount. We're all in this together, brothers and sisters, be good to each other and enjoy the gifts of the day, the various beauties revealed and shared in days past and those that will be there tomorrow. Peace, patrons ☮️✌🏼, love, lovelies 💖
🖖🏼😁🎉🎶❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Robert Hunter was a lyricist and ahead of his times.
Oh yeah!!!!
Simply as good as it gets!!
You have a little to learn about deadheads if you think we would leave during a song like that...have you heard The Music Never Stopped yet? Here some appropriate lyrics from it..."Keep on dancing through the daylight
Greet the morning air with song
No one's noticed, but the band's all packed and gone
Was it ever there at all?
But they kept on dancing"
He has. watch all his Grateful Dead reactions 😊
Always a second set favorite. Big whopper of a song, frequently paired up with Estimated Prophet as it was this particular show. "Eyes" opened the second set that Thursday night in Uniondale, New York. 3-29-90.
Okay I see others have told you about the special guest on sax that night. Branford played with them for bird song in the first set and for the entire second set and encore
This is from 3/30/90 you can easily find audio and maybe video for entire show...was released as audio 2cd set called, "Get Shown The Light" I think that's what it's called...maybe?. The audio quality is very good.
Pure Dope BizMatik
Ahh, I needed this tune to start my day this morning. Thank you, BizMatik. An ear-candy masterpiece!
Jerry guitar was different ✌️👽❤️🎶😎😜
Arguably my fav Dead song. Check one out from 74.
74 was a great year for 👀
10:25 Jerry with a guitar synthesizer. He used to transcribe trumpet lines into guitar, but it could sound like any horn and other things, like the woodwind you hear here. 🎶🎶🎵🎶🎸🔥💯✌️☮️🕊️
The “Horn Sounds” were thru his MIDI (Musical Instrumental Digital Interface) Set-up he had with his Guitar which would result in generating multiple sounds whether its was Horns, Strings, etc etc
@paulmancini-sb9qn thank you. Was too high to remember MIDI . Thx for the correct word (acronym) 🙏🎶🎶🎵🎸🔥
(~);} ☮️✌️🕊️
I was there. The first time Branford sat in.
That’s awesome - epic show. Definitely a highlight of that era.
IWT, too. Great run, great time!
That's Jerry adding an effect to his guitar that makes it sound like a flute. He experimented with those weird kind of sounds in the late 80s and early 90s
This is on my Sunday morning playlist 😊
Although i recommend listening to many different shows of different eras by the dead, i usually only recommend someone listen to certain songs, as a must to get that person acclimated to the trip they will venture down. Any show with Branford, especially his first show is a must hear/watch.
You picked a good one brother!
Jerry used standard tuning, but he knew how to manipulate unique qualities out of the instrument, like a jazz player. Jerry had some early digital electronics for trumpet, flute, pipe flutes and other sounds. He had a clear, watery sound, while the rhythm guitar had more metallic distorted and metallic sounding chords. The saxophonist in this one is the legendary Branford Marsalis.
Epic…………
Good Morning Little School Girl from Two from the Vault
Very Nice.
We've been starving. Where you been Djery?
Branford Marsalis on sax, a real treat!
Love you reacting to the Dead (and I REALLY love this version of Eyes with Branford Marsalis playing along), but.... one piece of constructive criticism - adjust your mic input up a little bit in relation to the music.. We can't hear you when you make remarks while the music is playing...
" it was a joy playing with them but it was even more of a joy to listen to jerry play " ~Branford Marsalis~

the flute sound is Jerry's guitar. He had a period where he really like that effect
I saw these shows.. 🌺😎
I was blessed to be at this show and it is certainly one of the top five I saw (I am a novice... I only saw about 220 shows with Jerry) - Branford Marsalis sitting in as if he'd been playing with them for twenty years was an incredible moment to behold, witness and be a part of. I dosed with some liquid sunshine (a random night - ya know, ya couldn't dose EVERY time 😜) that night and was rewarded with a show that has become etched into my mind FAR Above many of the other evenings I saw the Dead play and considered by many to be an epic show... here is a link to a video of the whole show... It has one of the most incredible Dark Stars' played in that era.... enjoy th-cam.com/video/my-1HAGiytA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2z-KP5eY7hsRUUBS
❤❤❤❤
Turn your mic up alittle?
There are many other better versions of eyes of the world than this one. The best one is from June 18th 1974 and I believe it's only 13 minutes long, but it is outstanding all the way through

Now compare that one to this eyes of the world which is the greatest moments in grateful Dead history!!! th-cam.com/video/fxDqyQSJmPU/w-d-xo.html&si=2RrLcLwdhZPt8lUG
Probably my favorite song but not thrilled with this version…the sax is unnecessary. There are MUCH better versions of this. Thanks for doing it though!
@richardwinslow3890 There are much different versions, definitely.
Which is why the horn is cool.
