Back when it was written, mermaids were considered demonic (much like vampires were before the whole twilight thing). The bit at the end where she's told to kill the prince is a test, and since she doesn't do it, she gains an immortal soul- which I guess is one of the things she wanted from the beginning. So there's that, I guess.
I grew up with this version
This is the little mermaid I grew up with! The illustrations of her as sea foam watching over the prince are beautiful.
At the end of the original she is redeemed by turning into the foam and hence her soul is allowed to be received by God. Hans Christian Anderson was still toeing the religious line when he wrote this tale but as time went on, and his own struggles with his unacceptable bisexuality and big fall outs with dominant literary figures (Charles Dickens, most famously) occurred, he questioned his faith more and more. You see this in other works of his such as The Christmas Tree and The Snowman-- where homosexual themes and lack of faith dominate. I was brought up on the original version, studied it at uni and lectured on it (and him) and it's actually a far more pro-female/ anti patriarchy version than the Disney adaptation.
When I was a kid I had a book with the popular fairy tales, not as dark as the originals, but not Disney's versions. I perfectly remember this part when they give her the knife, but she jumps and turns into sea foam. In my book, there was a beautiful drawing of her soul being carried away by some sort of angels.

Nooo at the end she commits suicide saying she can't kill her sweet love (who's actually sleeping with anther woman just in front of her but that's okay) and instead of transforming into sea foam she joins uuh "les filles de l'air" so sort of wind mermaids, like airmaids. Then someone tells us that because she did this act of true noblety and everything she has 100 years ahead of her to make good deeds and earn a soul. Yay.
yep :) and that's why she's called Ariel in the Disney film, because it's like an air spirit. And her voice returns to her and becomes the singing of the wind.
well, Andersen was a writer of the romantic period, an absolutely brilliant writer..and I think that this fairy tale is..yes, a bit grusome, but deebly romantic in its themes :) the Little Mermaid gives up her own life in order to save the man she loves because she can see how happy he is with his wife, and thus she gets an eternal soul and is carried of to heaven..so in a christian romantic way this ends up way more happy than the Disney version :)
'Dont be stupid love'
My version is that she wants her soul to go to heaven, so when she becomes foam, she finds herself in a strange place with many spirits. They tell her, in order to get to heaven you must serve 300 years there. HOWEVER, when you see a good child and smile upon them, then 2 years are subtracted from your time. If you see a bad child and frown upon him, then 2 years are added, so be good children, or else the Little Mermaid won't get to Heaven.
In the american version of the little mermaid, when she tries to return to the sea she is outcast by her father, who turns her into sea foam, to forever live on the edge of the sea and the edge of land, to live on the edge of both worlds, but never truly part of one or the other.

made slightly sweeter when we remember that she decides to kill herself instead of the prince because he looks so happy next to his new wife.

That was one of my favourite stories when I was little :) :(
OMG! I know right?! We had to read The Little Match Girl in school when we were like 9 and our teacher - who was an absolute weirdo - thought it was cute. CUTE! How is a depressing story about a little girl who is beaten by her father and dies at the end cute?! We were all scarred for life rocking back and forward in our seats and he was laughing!
plus, bear in mind that the little mermaid is fifteen. FIFTEEN.

She actually turns into wind, because most mermaids turned into foam when they died, but since she wasn't a mermaid anymore she couldn't turn into foam. Rather than just dying, for her noble act of not killing the prince she turned into wind

I love these Fairy Fails videos, your way of storytelling is absolutely brilliant! It's nice to know the original versions, but I prefer the Disneyfied fairy tales because of obvious and cliché'd reasons :)
Remember reading it when I was younger. Also, HCA has written TONS of fairytales. Some sad, some funny and some just... good :)

Andersen's Mermaid is the one I grew up with and I remember thinking that this is the saddest story ever. There was also a Soviet-time animation (1968) of the same story, a bit altered (like, she doesn't exactly turn into foam and stuff..) Starts off with a scene of tourists in Copenhagen and their guide telling them the story.
