John, you are a true gentleman. Thank you for reaching out in interest of having a meaningful relationship with us, your Canadian cousins. Always recognized and appreciated. 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Lost my 23 year old daughter 7 years ago, so I do know. I carry on as I needed to, but it is the hardest thing ever to lose a child who really is just coming in to their own as an adult. The loss of promise is terrible. Classic rock speaks to all emotions. Luckily for me, our last words to each other were I love you.
My condolences to you and your family on the terrible loss of your daughter. As a parent as well as member of a large family of 9 siblings, I know I can't begin to imagine the depth of your grief. My heart hurts for your pain.
💕🌹 John, huge respect and love, that you have spent so much time and care, not only LEARNING about Canada, but LOVING Canada 🇨🇦! You are a real treasure and I love your videos. It’s clear you have such a good, pure heart….I’d even say…you have the heart of a true Canadian 🌹💕
John, you are a dear soul. I am Canadian and I love watching your channel. 🇨🇦💖thank you for being kind. Rush is fantastic. The Guess Who is one of my favourites too
Story behind YYZ, is that they were flying to Toronto and Alex was the pilot in heard the morse code signal for the airport and the guys thought it was so catchy that they started to tinker around with it and they were always so happy when they got to see YYZ on their luggage tags.
I heard that Geddy got his name from his Yiddish grandmother. She would try to call him him "Gary" but it came out "Geddy". Thanks again for such a nice Canadian video. You are much appreciated.
There's another Canadian band that's quite good: The Tea Party. Their 1996 (?) album TRANSMISSION and its lead song "Temptation" might be something for you to check out.
Thank you John. You obviously know and respect your topic. Neil grew up near me in St Catharines (Port Dalhousie, Ontario) and they were planning to put a memorial to him in Lakeside Park where he sometimes hung out in the summer, but Covid put that on hold. Hope the project will be rejuvenated now. All three were master musicians, fun and stunning to watch live. So much music from just three guys! The lyrics remind me of another analogy. When young the popular kids, the jocks, &c were like the weeds that sprouted up quickly and stole the show but the kids who were not the "cool" ones worked hard and eventually became the strong oaks. BTW, the origin of "zed" is from the Greek and Latin "zeta". That found its way to France as "zede" . Since the Norman French invaded Britain and for many years English Kings spoke French, "zed" became the British pronunciation. Something everyone needs to know, LOL! Now you can ease your mind and have a good night's sleep!
The very first concert I ever went to was in the "old barn" - the Winnipeg Hockey Arena in 1974. The main band was Nazareth but the lead in band was Rush! That was the first time I had ever heard of them, but became a fan that night. I didn't learn until much later they were Canadian. Boy, am I old! Just a FYI - Geddy Lee is a major baseball and baseball memoribilia collector. There are some videos of him showing off his collection.
My first concert was at the "old barn". Burton Cummings, with a new band called Van Halen as an opener. Had never heard of Van Halen, and really didn't like them.
@@echobeefpv8530 If I remember correctly, we went to the bar in the old Sherbrook Hotel on Sherbrook and Wolseley after the concert. I don't think I could hear properly until about 3 days later. I do remember a "biker" tried to pick me up that night. I didn't fall for his lines.
Canada has a LOT of great rock bands. I put it down to the fact that winters are cold, and if you can’t play hockey, then you are in a basement with your friends making a rock band. Yup.
I thoroughly enjoy your content, you always seem to know which topics to cover. I also, as a Canadian, have a lot of respect for those like you who recognize our beautiful country, its people and all that we have to offer.
Rush had three musicians who were the best in the business. My husband and I had the pleasure of seeing them live, and they were unbelievable. If you haven’t listened to “Analog Kid”, I highly recommend it.

Massive RUSH fan.....but you can have equal opportunity, but never equity of outcome. That depends on the individual and how hard they work to persevere....peace.
Only a band like Rush, a trio of self-professed 'nerds' could make a heavy rock song about 'class struggle' and apply it to breeds of trees in a forest and make it totally rock and sound cool!! Can't think of any other band quite like Rush! As a resident just an hour outside of Toronto (Kitchener), also a nerd, these guys felt like a close friend! Seen them 9 times, and each time was one of the best shows of my life! Seeing this song live was ALWAYS a treat! RIP Neil - your words, drumming & YOU will forever be missed!
"Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" is an excellent documentary, and I think does a great job of highlighting the struggles they had that were particular to being a Canadian band, and also I think how their attitudes, and the way they dealt with life and fame was more "Canadian", than say KISS.
This was the very first song i heard from Rush in 1977. As the years went on, i heard them more and more on the radio. Ok, I was a fan of your channel before, but now that I know you're a Rush fan, that takes things to a whole other level! Rush are the best musicians to ever come from Canada, which is saying a lot, considering our musical talent. My perspective on The Trees has changed over the years, but when I first heard it in 1978 as a 14 year old, I wondered if Neil may have been obliquely referring to the oaks as Americans & the maples as Canadians in that Canada's place is often overshadowed by the US. Other great Canadian artists: April Wine, Saga, Max Webster, Teenage Head, Amanda Marshall, Triumph...too many to name, really. I've learned first hand from someone working at Le Studio, (Quebec) although many will argue, that Neil wrote this song as a metaphor for the the relation between Canada and the USA as Canadian artists struggled to get radio air time in the US at the time and didn't get much spotlight. Of course, not wanting to hurt the band's chances of entering the US market, Neil never made that fact know to any reporters.

The social injustice in the case of this song is the English-French adversity that exists in Canada. There are many Franco-phones that do not, will not or can not speak English. The same goes for Anglo-phones not speaking French. Living in Ontario the whole thing for me personally is non existent, however the French have long memories and remember all the cruel things the English did to them dating back 100's of years. Can't say I blame them...
I e learned it’s a complicated issue and I have avoided it a bit on the channel only because I know that weighing in on hot button political issues never produces only constructive and respectful debate. Well, that’s true here anyway so . . . But I appreciate the issue and have endeavored to learn more about it on my own.
@@johnf-americanreacts1287 I suspect the music, since I doubt imiss knows them in person now. But there is a funny scene in "Beyond the Lighted Stage" where Alex watches a scene of himself in the 1973 documentary "Come on Children" (about him and several other kids getting sent off to live on a farm without adults to be observed and see what happens), where he chuckles, and more or less admits "hey, I was an idiot" for not getting why his parents wanted him to stay in school. That said, I think for most of "Come on Children" he's one of the more mature and responsible kids.

I went to school with Alex Lifeson aka Ziviojonivic. (sp?). I couldn’t stand them when we were in high school. Can’t stand them now.
Well, they are a band that people love or hate. Do you not like Alex as a Perlson or his music? Just curious.
