Here’s the answer to your question about engineers used on the track (from Wikipedia):
2112 was recorded in February 1976 across four weeks at Toronto Sound Studios, with longtime associate Terry Brown assuming his role as producer.[18][16][12] The studio was fitted with a 24-track machine manufactured by Studer. Lifeson plays a 1968 Gibson ES-335 for the majority of the electric guitar parts on 2112, with some lead parts played on a Gibson Les Paul Standard. For the acoustic sections, he plays a 12-string Gibson B-45 and a six-string Gibson Dove. His amplifiers were the Fender Super Reverb and a Twin Reverb.[14] A section of "Discovery" features Lifeson playing a Fender Stratocaster that he borrowed from a friend.[13] At the time of recording 2112, Lee was using a Rickenbacker 4001 bass with stereo output; Brown fed one channel directly into the mixing board and then into a compressor, and the other was channelled into Lee's Electro-Voice speakers turned up to the maximum.[12] Upon completing the album, the band expressed an interest in recording in another studio to explore different sounds.[19] Their next album, A Farewell to Kings, was recorded in Wales.

This all relates to the story at the beginning. It tells of a new society/ world led by the Priests of Syrinx. Then, the individual discovers a guitar.

I hope you listen to this as one piece and then broke it into smaller videos instead of listening to it over several sittings, because I think the impact is lost when that approach is used. This was their big F U to those that wanted them to write radio friendly songs and the angst is palpable. Many have said this is THE piece of music that allowed them to do things their on way from then on. Please listen to it as a whole for the full effect. Have a great day and keep the Rush reactions coming.

48 year Disciple here. My GF gave me their self-titled debut immediately upon US release in June 1974. The instant stylus contacted vinyl I was hooked for life at age 13. When I heard that incredible voice perfectly match the music as a fourth instrument I was blown away. Saw them for the first time in January 1977 front row center arms on stage on their ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE tour. I was 16 and attended solo. To say it was a magical evening would be the understatement of the Century. Saw them again in 1980 on their PERMANENT WAVES tour. They billed themselves as THE WORLD'S SMALLEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. And as crazy as it sounds (and I have said this since FLY BY NIGHT was released in 1975) THE LYRICS ARE EVEN BETTER THAN THE MUSIC! To truly experience, and more importantly, UNDERSTAND their genius you MUST have the lyrics in front of you. That's why every album since FLY BY NIGHT has included the lyrics. The are the GOAT...

  • @bobcarn

This is truly classic prog rock. The words you first saw are part of the "story". On the original vinyl album when you opened it up, each section of 2112 was prefaced by an excerpt from the protagonist's diary, followed by the actual lyrics to that part. The opening piece (and closing piece) are instrumentals with no lyrics. It all combines in a single work that is considered a classic. It's prog-rock, but leans more on the "rock", making it very accessible. It's passionate and seamless and a wonderful piece! It's closer to an operetta than anything else, being a story with multiple characters singing their parts.

I didn't notice anyone below explaining this: The words you were reading in the beginning are actually part of the overall story that is INCLUDED in the lyrics on the album but meant to be READ by the listener. They are just a framework to help the listener understand what is going on in the actual SUNG lyrical passages that might not be as clearly stated. Neil Peart added an unsung written description before each section of the song (printed in the album jacket) for that reason.

At 4:00 you're talking about lyrics. So far the words you've seen are the liner notes from the album. They appear throughout the entire story, typically introducing each new part of the story. They provide background on the story being told. At this point in the song the "lyrics" and singing has not yet started.

I would suggest watching this all in one sitting. As someone else said this was the finger given to the record company that was not allowing them artist freedom and wanted then to do more radio friendly songs. The priests in the the song were the record label.
I chuckled about the college reference as all the members of Rush dropped out of high school to play music. Neil Peart who wrote the majority of the lyrics was an avid reader and later on in life wrote a number of books as well. They all were picked on in high school more for being hippies and their musical interests than anything else. I suggest watching Beyond the Lighted Stage which is an excellent documentary on the band and also gives you an insight into the music industry back in the day. Hope your wife is doing OK and kudos to your son on writing the book. Cheers

LFR … old school Rush fans know where you were and what was going on in your head. 2112 is set in the future, when the population has become cattle, living happily, just as they are told. There is no music that is not provided by the rulers and masters of the society. A man finds a guitar hidden in a cave and intrinsically knows the liberation it can bring to his fellow man and woman. Naively, he takes it to the priests for their approval. Calamity ensues. I bought this album on the day it was delivered to our local record store. The album was written as a last ditch effort for Rush to play the music they wanted, instead of being forced to create radio hits for their record label. It succeeded. They succeeded. I tortured girlfriends with it for years (…) You were simply in the wrong gear to listen to this story. Trash this attempt, and try again some other day. Best regards to you and yours….

Those words at the beginning are a narrative prologue to set up the story. It's like at the beginning of Star Wars when it goes, In a galaxy far far away ...
This is still my favorite Rush album although just about everything they did was pretty good. It shows how hard they can rock but it's still so creative. Side A is the concept side, which tells the whole story of 2112, of which this is only the first half of it I think. As others have said, really should be listened to in one 20 minute setting. Side B of the record album is all individual songs unrelated to 2112 but they grew on me over time and they are incredible individual songs, each different from the other.
    Thanks for reacting!

Ready for your mind to be blown away. The Last two lines of the song hold a special meaning. A hidden gem so to speak. First line: "Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation" and then the second:. "We have assumed control". Both lines are repeated 3 times each. First line has 7 words the second has 4. Repeating them 3 times each you first get 3x7= 21 and then 3x4=12 or 2112
    RIP PROFESSOR !

I just heard Peart as a teenager blown away by his talent. What was permitted with his drumming was the main driving force, plus his literary background, providing the lyrics. What he played was perfect for Rush. Listen to there earliest catalog for 400 miles tripping back from Spokane today. Ice covered roads. Damn, I still love that early Rush.

I enjoy watching people discover something that I have loved for many years.
Neil Peart was the GOAT (RIP)😭 GOD has him now😇
Neil wrote all the lyrics for the band.
"Listen to my music. Hear what it can do"
"There's something here as strong as life. I know that it will reach you"
Get in to the story. It's worth it.
That was side 1. Side 2 has other very good songs too.
There's videos on TH-cam with a serious cool video to go with the song. Enjoy!
Not only is this my favorite RUSH song it's my GOAT from anyone.
The band was at war with their record company/publishers because they wanted shorter more radio friendly music.
So the band pretty much gave them the finger and said, "We're doing this for us not you." They didn't need to
include their fans because they knew we were already onboard. Thus the20+ minute song. The entire side of 2112.
The song is about that war between what THEY want and what WE(collectively) want.
Songs that don't get reviewed enough are:
    Workin' Man
    Manhattan Project
    Red Sector A

First off---RUSH was never a dance band. When I was a kid back in the late 70's listening to this it took a few listens to realize it was a story----a futuristic science fiction story---I did not have the LP lyrics. Then I got the LP and read the backstory that you had posted, and the music and songs on side 1 were a portion of that futuristic story about evil (well-intended) priests who took control of how people thought and acted (governmental control and dictatorship). They outlawed music. Then this guy (the main character) finds an "ancient" guitar in a cave (sewer tunnel) and not knowing what it is messes with it. He finds the musical sound it creates amazing and wants to share it with his leaders (the priests) and the world. But, they shut him down and send him away. He is so sad, because in the past the people and their righteous leaders embraced music. The ending is sad, but the old leaders come back from their wisdom seeking journey in space and crush the controlling priests and take control again. A sci-fi story.

YES! With the ending(?) (I think) of the story taking place in the year 2112. Just rest a moment on the how utterly imaginative and insightful Neil was to have dreamed up a story like this back (at LEAST) as early as the mid1970’s! (It was first released in 1976) That alone, is pretty crazy but we have no idea how long he’d been kicking around ideas of these sorts in his head so, for all we know, he could have thought about this in the 60’s.
There’s also a chance that the whole subject of space, life in space and planetary interaction came from an outside source rather than being completely dreamt up from scratch in his brain. I say that not to take away from his brilliant imagination and lyrical talent that he not only proved himself above and beyond SOOO many times thru this song as well as ll their other songs thru their illustrious 40+ yrs careers, but I mention it as a curiosity from an observation I’ve made from that time period- the 1970’’s and it’s music.
I don’t know how many of you were either alive and paying attention to music during the 70’s or have taken any interest in what that era offered since-but whether it was FUNK or some DANCE or ROCK ( today better known as progressive-rock), there was a THICK preoccupation with outer-space connected to many of them. It was in their style of synthesizer use , their stage costumes, the art on their album covers and even their lyrics sometimes. I was just a little girl at the time so I wasn’t aware of where that heavy 🎶 “🎤SPACE IS THE PLACE🎵” influence was coming from. Since then though, I noticed it and was always real curious. I just never took a deep dive into figuring it out. The ONLY thing that comes to mind is the moon landing from 1969. Could THAT have really done it!?? 🤨🤔

FYI this is not info from anything about the band, but I know the following: "Syrinx" is a Greek word which refers to the spine of any mammal, but also this same Greek word is used for the "spine" or "channel" in a Greek (ancient era) stone artillery (Greek: Lithobolos: Stone Projector/ Roman Latin: Ballista). Basically, the "barrell" of the Stone Projector.

The overture is made of snippets of each section of the pice that’s why the words don’t really come in until the end of it. This is a fantasy novel in song, the priest are the leaders and he discovers a guitar and brings it to show them and they brush him aside “ we don’t need the ancient way’s, everything you need we provide.”

Dude the words in the beginning when you first started listening where you said they were not singing is the story that gives you the reference to the lyrics. If you pause the song during each section where there are words you'll understand. The story is amazing trust me

Van, The drummer Neil wrote this song, as he did 99.9% of all their songs. And YES.. they were/are highly intelligent/well-read guys. To get a glimpse into what they’re talking about in any given song, just look up a key word or two that you’ve never heard of before and it will open up a whole other world to you- it’ll instantly put context to the song you’re listening to. Neil read a lot about ancient worlds and ancient eastern civilizations , religions, and astrology. Btw, NO ONE understands Rush the first time around nor may EVER fully understand everything they do or say.. I think that might be impossible. But I can tell u with 100% confidence that everyone who digs their talent even a little bit learns to LOVE any given song of theirs the more they listen to it and it doesn’t take too many listens to get there. It starts growing on you pretty quickly if you try it and it never stops impressing you no matter how many times you hear it.

"neil wrote this song". you are correct regarding the lyrics, which neil always wrote. geddy and alex were just as involved as neil in writing the music, and the music is integral to the "song". neil was their lyricist, not their composer or song-writer.

Bullshit. Neil Peart always wrote the lyrics and his own drum parts. Alex Lifeson & Geddy Lee always wrote the chord structure, melodies, riffs, etc. I.E. - the brunt of the actual music. Neil himself would never claim to have written anything for Rush by his lonesome. And neither would Geddy or Alex. It was always a 3-way collaboration. Anybody who tells you differently doesn't know what they're talking about.

It’s awesome your son wrote a book. Think of 2112 As a book put to music. You are correct that Rush is like an orchestra and they are nerds. They always said they want to be known as a three-man orchestra. And while many rock artists party while they’re on the road, rush read books. I would recommend if you’re going to do a long song from progressive rock band, And you want to break it up into parts, title it part one part two etc. and listen to it all the way through.

Their drummer Neal Peart was heavily into science fiction and futuristic thought. As others have pointed out in the comments, what you are first seeing are not lyrics but liner notes from inside the album. Neal had a brilliant mind and I think he could have been a brilliant writer if he hadn't been the drummer extraordinaire that he was.

This song , actually it’s an album side, it one of the best ever written but you need to see the words and understand the story to fully appreciate it completely. This starts with the nuclear apocalypse, you hear the nuclear explosion in the first song just before the first line “ the meek shall inherit the earth “afterwards the world is run by priests and computers. The Temple’s of Syrinx. This guy finds a guitar behind a waterfall and not knowing what it is discovers it’s beauty. He takes it to the priest who turn him and it away as an evil item. He goes home in pure disbelief. The elders return to destroy the temples and resume control of the planets of the federation. That’s the short story. Please the next time you listen please pull up the words and listen

It's a story of a future authoritarian society who's leaders(priests) control societies actions, ideas, influences- incl music( no guitar) & the young man's attempt to question their inflexible decision to ban something so good.
At the time Rush's management were trying to force them to make songs that would be shorter, simpler, more pop music. They stood their ground and made an album of music they wanted and used the story to symbolize their( little guy) fight to against a big corporation trying to direct what kind of music they would make.
In the end the album 2112 spoke to listeners and became a break thru for Rush.

Read what the story is about then listen to the record a few times. You'll begin to appreciate its greatness.
At the time, Rush wasn't doing too good. The record company threatened to axe them if they didn't write more appropriate radio music. They answered with a middle finger raised in the air and came out with 2112. Its the record that drove their success forward.

The opening piece in 2112 is called ‘overture’, which in classical music format (Opera), is a term exclusively used to announce to the listener of the intro (beginning), and is always an instrumental. There are some famous, very recognisable overtures - several that most people have heard but are unaware of the composition, composer or origin.
If at all interested: Do have a listen to the overture(s) for the operas, Carmen or The Barber Of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia)

Yep, Emperor Nerds. But you’re completely off track on college. None of them went to university (as we refer to them up here) and two of them were high school dropouts!
Now, to be fair, the lyricist/drummer, the late Mr. Neil Peart, OC, apparently was skipped forward two grades in primary school and so finished high school really early (as a lanky, self-described “freak” two years younger than his peers). He would wind up being a multiple best-selling author and - of - course inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for his drumming and lyrics.

Look at the verse and read and understand what they are saying. " equality our stock in trade, come join in the brotherhood of man. Oh what a nice contented world, let the banners be unfurled..hold the RED STAR proudly high in hand. It's a very deep and significant message... or a warning, of what can happen if all of us are looked at as the same. Devoid of art music, culture and differences at all.... as referenced with the lyric, equality our stock in trade, come join in the brotherhood of man. It means we sacrifice our individual self for equality for all. There is a certain political ideology that touts this message... and it even sports a red star.

This is a future shock story about a totalitarian theocracy in the year 2112. They control every aspect of society and culture. The protagonist discovers a guitar from a long lost era ( our own perhaps)
He takes it ti the priests and they smash it, claiming that it was a destructive element of the elder culture. The man slips into despair after having a vision of how free the world once was. He takes his own life too soon, the elder society returns after having left the planet long before, to reclaim the earth from the oppressive regime...
"Attention all planets of the solar federation...we have assumed control.."

Considering the journey you have been on seeking knowledge and allowing yourself to question what you have know to be truths, 2112 is a great album for you to dig deeper into. Neil was influence by Ayn Rand when he was younger, I think later in life he sort of distanced himself from those ideals....she developed the philosophy of Objectivism. Think of Objectivism as living your life and making choices you think are good for you the individual. Vs Collectivism think "greater good" principle. Less personal freedoms for the great good argument. This is the most simple way to put it. I think looking deeper would help you with the path you have been on. I was lucky to have a very cool English teacher in HS, early 90s...he had us dissect 2112. It wasn't until 20 years later that I really understood what he was trying to teach us as young teenagers.
