  • This Inspired By series is inspired by Nick Bantock of Griffin and Sabine fame. He is a celebrated collage artist, illustrator and author, and his books are like walking into a mysterious wonderland of secrets and hand written mail. This series of videos (3 in total) explore his style over mail art in the form of postcards (part 1: • Inspired By Nick Banto... , Faux postage and seals (part 2 - • Inspired by Nick Banto... ) and putting all the elements together to create a book within a book (part3: • Inspired by Nick Banto... ). I hope you enjoy this look into the world of collage and mail art combined.

    It’s a good idea to photocopy precious papers to collage and keep the originals. Then you can get multiple uses from each one

    Love this! You know, you can scan those old papers and print them out on anything, including tissue, tracing paper, and coffee/tea stained papers, leaving your original. I hate to cut mine up, too!

    Very interesting ! Really enjoyed learning about this artist and seeing what you created. I've got several things in my stash that I can't bring myself to use yet. What you said about having it in a book instead of tucked away in a box, really hit home. 👍🏻

    Thanks for this great video Niamh. I really like Nick Bantocks work and you really captured the style beautifully. Is there any marking on your fish stamp indicating who manufactured it. It looks rather large and I'm having a difficult time finding one any larger than about 2-3 inches. Thanks for the video share and happy creating

    • @NiamhBaly
      @NiamhBaly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharon Montalbano thank you. The fish stamp is from 100%proof stamps. They still exist, but this stamp may not as it is over 20yrs old so is probably discontinued

    Wow. Just ... Wow. Beautiful. Very “Bantockian”!
    Where did you get your piercing awl (the pointy thing used to make stamp perforations)? What size tip do you use?

    • @NiamhBaly
      @NiamhBaly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CRMCSYS thank you- I just used an sewing Unpicker to make the piercings - you could use a sewing needle as well, no idea what size sorry

      Niamh Baly I ordered the Crafter's Companion 18950 Ultra Pro Seam Ripper from Amazon.com because of its curvy point, watched this video for the umpteenth time - I love your creativity - and finally noticed you were holding a regular seam ripper/unpicker. Thank you for tolerating my question. During previous viewings I must have been blinking at the critical second. You’ve inspired me to attempt collage. I look forward to making postage stamps. Delivery is scheduled this week.
      I never heard the expression “fussy cutting” until TH-cam. I am a potential fussy cutter. I also ordered a pair of EK Success EKCB01 Cutter Bee Precision Scissors: A reviewer said she is able to cut out “little bird feet.” Most reviewers warn the scissors are extremely sharp so, while I look forward to cutting out little bird feet, I’m a bit terrified. Wish me luck.

      Hi - been trying to find this comment in my feed and its taken this long to track it down!!! Hope you went okay with your scissors. i had a pair of those and they are great. Just got the new tim holtz small haberdashery ones which I am using for paper and they are amazing!!! With the unpicked - I find one I have perforated it, I use a knife or scissors to cut out the stamps. If its not a 'proper' perforated edge, it will tear your work much more easily. Hope your mail art is going well x

    Do you find that YooHoo glue sticks well and for a long time?

    • @NiamhBaly
      @NiamhBaly  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cathy xox thanks. I did this a year ago and the glue is still holding up. If you glue to the edges and are only gluing papers together it’s pretty good. Plus you get less wrinkling in magazine collage papers than with wet glues

      Maurice Powers it doesn’t exist anymore but there is an American one called 100 proof press that does lots of mail art type stamps and also sells perforated paper for faux stamp making. Hope that helps

      It’s a learning curve. If it’s acrylic paint you wan wipe off with a wet wipe while still damp. If it’s dry collage over it x
