  • The GT2RS and 959 represent the top of Porsche's line-up, 30 years apart. We had the rare opportunity to drive them back to back in a comparison we've never seen and never thought we'd get to do.
It's not our usual subjects... but we like to dream as well!

I must say, this is the first time I've seen these guys, and I can honestly say that these guys are one of the best presenters I've seen in so long. They are true car guys. Very enthusiastic and relatable. No stupid jokes, no robotic speech, just talking about the cars! Love it. Oh, and the 959 is my dream.

The Gelände gear is not for off-roading. What happened in Germany when this car was released was that it was too loud to pass noise emission tests at the time, and so Porsche came up with a loophole to pass the test. They renamed the first gear as the "country side" gear (Gelände) so as to be able to pass the noise test, which was done by accelerating away from a dB meter at the exhaust at full speed from a standstill in first gear. Since they renamed the gears, they were actually passing the test accelerating from a standstill in second gear. Accelerating from a standstill in Gelände gear was technically only allowed on roads in the countryside where the noise restrictions were lower.

So glad you brought up Bruce Canepa. I grew up in Santa Cruz right down the street from Bruce Canepa dealership. This was the wonderful 1980s. I think it was called Bruce Canepa Motorsport. Anyway, he had exotics all over the lot. I would marvel every time I rode my skateboard by there. Also, my house was on the corner of Poplar and Fairmount. For whatever reason his cars would often pass right in front of my house. There’s a stop sign and many times they’d lay into the throttle a bit and row through the gears. It was a marvelous sound of precision moving parts and a delight to my ears. That’s when my love of the automobile started. Ah...the memories.

A perspective on the insane performance of the GT2RS: A friend of mine does the Virginia City hillclimb most years, usually in his Nissan GTR (heavily tweaked, making about 1000 HP). He previously set the course record in that car with a 3:11. He bought a GT2RS Weissach this year, and brought that instead. Bone stock, including stock tires, he ran a 3:09.

The GT2RS is a pretty insane achievement. On paper, it shouldn't stand a chance against the more hardcore stuff like a Ford GT or a Ferrari 488 Pista, but it is indeed faster around most tracks, without being anywhere as punishing.

@@jolness1 since I saw the very first one in a magazine. THE pinnacle of German design of my favourite sports car. I remember reading that it idled at like 800 rpm and they could put it in 6th and smoothly take off. After hearing about the terrain mode, that’s probably how it was done. lol
      Still so so cool 😎

@@missesmew such an incredible car. I'm sure you know that in the US the "show and display" law was passed largely because of this car. Bill Gates wanted his and Canepa helped. As a 911 fan, arguably one of the most important cars ever. The adjustable suspension and incredibly advanced AWD system still feel modern today. It's also the only supercar that was ever designed primarily for rally. The Rothman's livery is beautiful as well. It looks every bit a 911 but is unmistakably 959.

    • @WindozeCS
      @WindozeCS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Vash Spiegel There's not a chance that it requires even a tenth of $30,000 in labor costs. They just charge that much for a 959 oil change because of how expensive the car is, it's just a scummy upsell. It's likely that $30k is Porsche's charge for an oil change, because I doubt many 959 owners want to take their prized possession anywhere for maintenance other than Porsche.

    • @peterlewis3540

That was truly fantastic, and I'm not given to hyperbole.
I was in my teens when the 959 came out. It was jaw-dropping in its advancement. Your comment about the Ferrari F40 is what I always thought. Yes, the Ferrari is exciting and quick, all the things you expect from Ferrari. But it was nothing like the 959 in terms of innovation, nor was it anything like as liveable. Saying the 959 feels like it's 10-12 years old is a great summary, and a measure of how remarkable it is. A friend of mine's father had a 911 3.3 turbo in 1988, the original 4 speed. He used to let me drive it (yes, sounds crazy). That thing was amazing compared with any 'normal' car, so the 959 was next level dreamland stuff.
As for the GT2RS? Surely one of the greatest cars able to be bought by the general public ever built. I'm not sure what, if anything, effectively rivals it. I thought the comment about being friends with the world's greatest assassin was funny and apt; the more you think about that, the more it works.
It's why I've always loved Porsches from the moment I had my first ride in that friend's 3.3 Turbo. Amazingly quick (for its time) yet ridiculously easy to drive around town.
Great video on two of my favourite cars ever built, and wonderful discussion of all the important aspects.

Great review guys, appreciate the detail and effort you've gone to with the dialogue and cinematic shots. Have to say it's leagues ahead of the other review I watched on these earlier in the week. Hope you dont mind me taking some of your angles for my own channel. 👍

Pretty impressive they let you drive that 959. And it's just amazing how Porsche got everything they can from that engine back then. The GT2 RS it's a record breaker that looks beautiful and drives perfectly, a truly dream car. Nice video guys, get a new subscriber.

That's all very nice, but you have forgotten something important to say about the 959 "race history": the Porsche 961, which was the 959 LeMans racing version, was immediately successful at its first 24 hours of LeMans race in 1986, with a class victory in "GTX class" and an overall 7. place of course, behind six other Porsche 962, 956 and 936!
Of course at this unbelievably successful time in motorsport for Porsche during the whole 1980' at LeMans 24 with totally dominance, when sometimes only Porsche 956 and 962 were in the top ten result lists, there was no purpose for an AWD "unicorn" car like the Porsche 959/961. But if there would have been only a little bit of rain in the 1986 LeMans race, the Porsche 961 would have been the winner, thanks to its AWD system, which was exclusively allowed for the 961 in this race!

Both cars are the best of their time, this is my conclusion. The 959 was a sort of laboratoy of all the technologies who became standard for lots of following supercars and the 991.2 GT2 is the best 911 ever produced

I find one thing very interesting. Your description of the GR2RS' power delivery and livability is exactly how I describe my ZX14R's power delivery. Basically, it will flatten your eyeballs if you want it to, but the rest of the time, it is as docile as you need it to be.
The engine is just as happy commuting, as it is chasing the horizon. Yet, you always feel that the power and torque are there, waiting to be unleashed.
