The one thing I didn’t like about the original 959 was the wheels. They looked undersized and lost in the fenders. Now I learn there was a reason for that. I’m not usually a fan of large diameter rolling stock (no bigger than 16” on a 911, please!) but Canepa’s wheels make the 959 look like it should have all along. This project is mind-blowing - WOW!
Thank you so much Bruce, I really enjoyed this. You're a fantastic ambassador, custodian of the 959. To see a 959 featured on TH-cam is a rarity. Would be really cool if one of your customers did a full review of what it's like owning a re-imagined 959.
I have known Bruce since about 1978 when I left Peter Gregg's company in Jax, FL and opened a new car franchise for Mercedes-Benz in CA. He was in Santa Cruz then but the shop you see here is in Scotts Valley, CA a huge shop that was a Seagate Technology Factory. I have been around new and used cars professionally for more then 50 years with some of the best people and business's in the field and NO ONE does the quality of work that he does on so many different cars strictly "cost-no-object" quality work that is startling sometimes it is so amazing. He does drive one of the 959's everyday -- last time I saw him was by accident in Los Gatos, CA he was driving a red/black 959 and we chatted a bit he looked sounded great! BTW he is very very good race driver and has raced all manner of particularly Porsche's but Pikes Peak Hill Climb and Trans-Am Javelin's as well. I have driven his actual 959 as well as Bill Gates and Paul Allen's and several others which were having work done on them @ Euro-Tech Grant Miller's electronics prototype Co. that was near my Porsche / Mercedes / BMW & Bentley dealership in Fremont CA. They are & were astonishing cars that he has developed to a level that is UNimaginable to touch, see and drive. His shop in Scotts Valley is filled with that kind of work all the time and has a great little museum as well in the showroom. If you want to challenge him to do some creative work bring a heavy wallet & patience the result will stun all who see the car! Tom C. / Las Vegas, NV
I was in love with the 959 ever since it first came out. Had all the test drive articles, books and even have one of Lewandowski's limited print books. Knew all the specs, performance figures, options etc. Then finally had a chance to sit in one in 1993, and it was magic! If I ever win the lottery this is the first car I buy!
If I could have any vehicle, it would be one of these. Always loved the 959 and the meticulous upgrades from Bruce and the entire team... make it even better. Normally, I prefer to keep things totally original but this... keeps all the character but is next level.
Outstanding!!! I love your interpretation of a restomod. I saw one of these in person once and it was breathtaking. You got Singer, Ruf, Guntherwerks and now Canepa. If you think about it, you were one of the first. Well done sir, well done!!!
Thank you! We have been working on Porsche 959s for over 30 years, and we've been doing development work since 2000. We were responsible for the first emission-legal 959s in the United States. We also helped pass the Show Or Display law that let the cars come into the country in the first place.
Bruce well done for your passion and determination to build up your deam cars. Canepa is a name that comes eather from Italy or possibly from the south of the Alps in Switzerland where I am from. Again hat’s off to your projects and great professional set up company. Kind regards from Switzerland.
Good lord, this car was expensive when it first came out. I can’t imagine what these upgrades run the price up to. I’m absolutely in lust with that Green one. Magnificent job Bruce!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Years ago I saw a vintage race from Laguna Seca. Bruce had a great drive , I had no idea who he was sooooo I called his shop, asked to speak to him , so he took my call and I gave him a attaboy for his drive !!! Didn't know he was such a big deal in the world. Of Porsche !!!!😄😄😄😄😄😄😎😎🚘🚘🚘🚘🍺🍺🍺🍺🇺🇸🇩🇪
I saw about 10 or 15 of these cars parked together at Rennsport. I briefly studied each one late in the evening with no disturbance which was a very personal experience. I wonder if one of those 10 to 15 cars was a Canepa Special. -- I really enjoy, and appreciate, the way Bruce describes the process in broad terms but with enough detail to keep everyone interested. You have developed a well-honed art-form Mr. Canepa.
Still a stunning testamony of the level of the craftmanship , and dedication to excellence of porsche.Bruce recognizes that and obviously matches that commitment to only make a great thing even greater .thank you sir!
I had a poster of a silver 959 on my wall in the 80's .... still the grail car for me. But can I afford one ... no hehehe. But mesmerising video . Really like the calm and knowledgeable presentation.

An insane car, brought to amazing insane level, with todays top notch technology. What a dream car this is, if I had to choose 1 car, this would be it, you can't sell it, you have to use. I don't need an F1, this is usable in real public road conditions easy.
Thanks Bruce for doing what you do. I grew up in Santa Cruz in the 80's and would walk your lot on Water street and imagine myself owning some of those amazing track ready Porsches. I think I saw Seinfeld and Cosby on the lot some days and I heard your aero packages for the transport semis is what kept the business afloat. From one gearhead to another, I salute you sir.
Amazing, thanks so much for the tour and the insight. I was like many others in the comments and sceptical at the idea of restoring a 959 but after hearing the details and seeing the passion I was quickly converted. These really are something special
Porsche, if you’re listening, please PLEASE bring back the 959 extended rear end on a modern Porsche. I’ve always loved it and have wanted to see it on another model since the 90s. Bring it back!
This is a just a hole new level, reimagined a 911 is one thing to do that on 959 you really need to be a real expert on the matter. It's not the same thing to get a donner 911 and donner 959 is absolutely different thing, they are so rare and there are not many as well. Bruce I'm astonished about this massive project, this is clearly the best tribute you could do for this supercar. Huge congratulations you really deserve it, there are two legends the 959 and Bruce Canepa👏👏

Thank you Bruce, great video and very interesting on the 959 and how you upgrade them. Rode in one in the UAE a while back and that car ended up in Bahrain with the Crown Prince. Quite a few in the Middle East, as I recall, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, but I am sure that you know where they are. Best regards from BC, Canada

Even Porsche has to be proud of the work you are doing to preserve these incredible machines. These Porsche's (among many other Porsche models) will no doubt be around for hundreds of years to come due to the preservation work and superior upgraded materials being used. There aren't many car manufacturers today who can say that. It's a testament to how good Porsche cars are. There is probably no other manufacturer in business that has such a loyal following of preservation (other than the Hypercar manufacturers) than Porsche.
Amazing insight into a fantastic company. I wonder what the process would be like to convert one of these to right-hand drive, if that's even a possibility?
I was fortunate enough to attend the Frankfurt Auto Show in the mid-80's and saw a 959 in the Porsche booth that was cut down the middle into a cross section view. I was about 21 at the time and couldn't believe the technology that went into the car and then cutting it in half.
As a big Porsche Fan, from the story behind it and the piece of Art it became it’s definitely my favorite and most desirable Car to own… ever! Big respect 🤝😍
I was in high school when this car came out and I literally dreamt about these things. How far advanced this car was for its time can not be overstated. In fact, I don't think any other car has been produced that has been so far advanced as thr 959. This guy is brilliant. I wouldn't even be able to change the altenator in a 959, let alone strip off literally every bolt and rebuild it. They were expensive back then, at roughly 250k USD, when a countach was roughly 100k. And they are really expensive now, fetching between 1 to 2 million I beleive. So can you imagine what it would cost to buy one and then have all this done to it?
Thanks for the walkthrough. I’d love to retrofit a 959 with all the latest parts! Silly question, maybe, but as getting a hold of a 959 becomes more difficult, would it be possible to 3D print an entire 959 body?
My question is shouldn’t they be kept original to retain there historical and financial value ? Or will modification and enhancements increase their value.
historically significant examples should be kept that way, but the rest just driven and enjoyed and i feel they will be more driven and enjoyed by the owners going through this process.
He was instrumental in getting these federalized for import before being 25 yrs old. The modifications started there to meet emissions. Guess it just stuck and he wanted to continue to improve upon them. You could import a completely stock one now for registration since they are greater than 25 yrs old though.
the 959 was my dream car when i was a kid in the 90s when I first saw it. It's still my dream car today. It will probably be my dream car when I'm old and grey.
I love the 959 and remember having a Testors metal bodied model. Painted mine Kiln Red Metallic. Beautiful in a classic way. So far ahead of everything else. Wouldn’t mind having a 992 Turbo S as a consolation if I can’t get a 959!
All my friends had posters of Ferrari F40s, Testarossa's, Countach's etc, i had those too, but i was the only one with a poster of a silver 959. It's the dream car i always wanted, and it still is, but in a dark silver or metallic midnight blue.

I am torn.. Beautiful, mind blowing work. Taken an amazing car to another level.
But it's not how the car left the factory.
But still amazing work.
I could listen to Bruce talk about these projects all day. Fantastic video.
It would be great to do a video where you take some of the original 959 engineers through the car and get their feedback.
