Conversations That Matter: Dr. Alessio Fasona on "leaky gut" syndrome

  • The discovery that “leaky gut” contributes to celiac disease and autoimmunity was treated with great skepticism. Five years after the formulation of the hypothesis, Dr. Alessio Fasano and his team discovered zonulin, a protein that reversibly modulates intestinal permeability.
Zonulin’s effect on gut permeability involves the regulation of tight junctions in intestinal and extra-intestinal cells, including the endothelial cells of the blood brain barrier.
Why should you care? Well, it plays an important role in gut permeability otherwise known as leaky gut syndrome.
It turns out there are several potential intestinal stimuli that can trigger zonulin’s release. One is bacterial dysbiosis and the other is gluten. The discovery that zonulin causes aberrant intestinal permeability led to the appreciation that this protein is involved in the pathogenesis of a variety of autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
We invited Dr. Alessio Fasano to join us for a Conversation That Matters about our guts, our microbiome and what we can do to manage our own well-being through diet and lifestyle.

Thank you for making this video available. Dr. Fasano (yes, it's FasAnO rather than FasOnA, so perhaps that typo in the video title might be fixed sometime out of respect for the gentleman) and his research team have made critical, paradigm-changing medical discoveries over the past two decades. Dr. Fasano's books include Gluten Freedom (for the general public) and A Clinical Guide to Gluten-Related Disorders (for medical folks). His contributions to the scientific literature (see PubMed) are extensive. His paper entitled "Zonulin and its regulation of intestinal barrier function: the biological door to inflammation, autoimmunity, and cancer" would be a good place to start in on the hard science if interested in delving into it and really would be good for all physicians to read. Dr. Fasano's contributions to our understanding of health disruption are immensely important to all of us, our children, and all future generations. Thanks again to all involved with this presentation.

I have watched 10 or so videos by that guy and he never says anything determinate. I still don't know whether I should eat some gluten, no gluten, or all the gluten I want, if I am not celiac. He says that if you're not celiac your immune system can clean up the mess, whatever this means, but still gluten increases the zonulin stuff which causes almost all diseases. Really unhelpful

Goal should be fixing the leaky gut, but everyone has a reason of why this happened.. He doesn't know what your genetic background is, and what disease you display.. So you probably should start seeing some doctor with the same views. They know exactly what to do, medicationwise and integration

LOL! What on earth is the Vancouver Sun doing here promoting this? Me thinks the Sun has some budgetary problems.
