When people choose to follow a religion, they are often looking for feelings of peace, contentment, and connection to a higher power. This feeling of spirituality is central to the life of a Muslim, but some may feel like it’s not necessary to follow a religion in order to experience it. They might consider themselves spiritual, but not religious.
Do sentiments like this help people come closer to God? Can a person be spiritual without being religious? What does an Islamic approach to spirituality look like?
Mohamad Zaoud explores these questions and more with Imam Tom Facchine, a fellow at Yaqeen and the Imam of Utica Masjid in New York.

basic teach of all prophet are "self-control@self-conduct" so that human could differed their selves against animal and lower-self...and this "specific quality" helps human thinking about higher-self

Thank you for having imam Tom. I wonder if spirituality has an equivalent meaning in Islam. In Islam, there's the (Qalb/heart) the place of iman ; and purifying of the heart and nourishment ( tazkiya) of the nafs is through service, work, nawafel, and good deeds ( as Allah has prescribed) . And since you mentioned Rumi, earlier ( real Sufis) even stressed that only through struggle with the nafs and worship that a servant can be elevated to a closer level to his creator.

Being spiritual without religion is looking for a shortcut to God. If your spirituality is to please God then you have to do what is pleasing to Him. Basically being merely spiritual is laziness on our parts and therefore meaningless in the eyes of God.

Bismillah! Alhamdulillah. Shukran for the DoubleTake. May Allah (swt) accept us.
Religion is BELIEF & WORSHIP of Almighty God. Spiritual relates to the human spirit excluding material or
physical things according to the dictionary.
So spiritual is like having an empty glass. Religion is having a glass of milk, drinking it and receiving the nutrients from it.
The FULL cycle. Religion is BELIEF first followed by WORSHIP. Al Islam is the Religion of certainty.
As salaamu alaikum believers! May Allah azza wa jal guide you. 🕋

Thank you for sharing this. Both Imam Tom and the host are absolutely amazing. The host asks such intellectual and realistic questions that we as a society, including myself face on daily basis, while Imam Tom answers them in a non-judgmental, insightful and kind way. Thank you so much for this thought-provoking conversation.

it is a good question and many people having this view being spiritual without religion but that is wrong . example take the case of prayer it has many meaning like respect creator, love , holding faith, training etc so we can take the case of respect because we obliged to respect God because he gave us blessing . here is the issue how can we respect example a son can respect father only by the way how father likes , a student can respect teacher only by the way how teacher likes , then it is clear believer can respect God only by the way how God likes , In Quran Allah saying pray me like how i teach. here through Quran and prophet it is teaching how to pray. second how would we know about God or creator . Answer is only through his words or book given to us . Without book if people thinking about God it is delusion not understanding and not possible to understand directly by thinking .so prophet , Revelation and religion is necessary

Spiritual Relationship with Life ! ...
A friendly understanding of the Akhirah (Death) .
“When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial),
& one remains with him: his relative, his property, & his deeds follow him; relatives,
& his property go back while his deeds remain with him.”
    Bukhari (Vol. 8 :521);
“Indeed, to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He gives life and causes death.
And you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper.”
    Surah Tawbah (Ayat 116);
“Do not kill the soul which Allah has made sacred except by right of justice. Whoever is killed unjustly,
We have given his heir authority, but let him not exceed the limits in taking life.”
    Surat Al-Isra (Ayat 33) .

    The Sunnah of Dawah ...
Da'wah is also the Sunnah (practice) of Prophet Muhammad RAS (Peace be upon him).
Allah (swt) recognized him as Daa'ee Ila-Allah ("Daa'ee" or "Daa'iah" means the one who calls people to Allah).
The first Shahada in Salah ...
Promoting the essential unity of the Islamic Faith. A proclamation that there is no god but one (God) Allah (swt),
& the Prophet Muhammed RAS (pbuh) is His Final Messenger.
One of the major fundamental component of the Islamic Faith. is the Tawhid. which is the theological aspect,
of this Prayer (in Salah) which states that their is "no god but God".
The preaching's of Islam and the exhortation to submit to Allah (swt) because 'Dawah' is like donating which is written,
in the Holy Qur'an ... Definition in Arabic : Da'wah “issuing a summons,” “invitation,” or “call”
Referring to proselytizing and preaching to non-Muslims in particular.
The understanding on this basis asserts the monotheistic aspect of Islam, which ensures the promotion of,
the unity of (God) Allah (swt) as the source of existence.
The different types of Dawah in Islam...
The 'Mawduc of Dakwah' discuss all aspects that relate to Da`wah, Aqidah (Belief in one God) and Syariah,
(Islamic Law). Al-Bayanuni (2010) explains that the tenets of Da`wah are made up of three aspects as follows :
    1. Dacie,
    2. Madcu,
    3. and Mawduc (content) of da`wah.
The Prophet Muhammad RAS (pbuh) Dawah Model the Medina Charter ...
The Prophet Muhammad RAS (pbuh) Dawah Model in Medina was divided into public relations management system.
and the system of government and politics.
In which the 'Medina Charter' came to a agreement which was concluded by the understanding of the assertion,
of the Islamic Faith. To resolve complicated matters in which each individual dispute amongst the Muslims in Medina.
Ordered to be returned to the provisions of Allah (swt) and His Messenger RAS (pbuh).
The first Surah which instructs us Muslims on Dawah ...
In the Holy Qur'an Surah Ikhlas, is known as the taster Surah in which to give 'Dawah' is recommended .
Hadith ("sayings") of the Prophet Muhammad RAS (pbuh) Daʿwah ...
"Whoever directs someone to do good will gain the same reward as the one who does good."
"Whoever calls to guidance will receive the same reward as the one who follows him without any decrease,
in the reward of his follower."
The Muslim Belief in the Prophets (pbuh) who Performed Miraculous Blessings in Disguise ! ...
The first Prophet was Adam (as) who was also the first man, created by Allah (swt)
The 5 Special Prophets in Islam ...
    1. Ibrahim (as) (Abraham), Isma'il (as) (Ishmael),
    2. Musa (as) Moses,
    3. Dawud (as) David,
    4. Isa (as) Jesus Christ (pbuh)
    5. Muhammad RAS (pbuh).
Primary Sources - Islamic Law and Society ...
The 3 types of Sunnah ...
    1. the sayings of the Prophet RAS (pbuh)- Sunnah Qawliyyah/Hadith.
2, the actions of the Prophet RAS (pbuh)- Sunnah Al Filiyya.
    3. the practices prevailing during Muhammad's RAS (pbuh) - Sunnah Taqririyyah.
    The Greatest Sunnah ...
    Performing Wudu (Ablution):
    1. Mentioning the Name of Allah (Bismillah) before beginning wudu.
    2. Washing the hands thrice.
The 4 Sunnah of all Prophets (pbuh) ...
Abu Ayyub reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“There are four traditions of the Messengers:
    1. Modesty,
    2. Wearing fragrance,
    3. Using the toothpick,
    4. Marriage.
    Reward of giving Dawah ...
The Holy Qur'an reminds us that there is a “recognised right, for the needy and deprived” over our wealth (70:24-5),
As a Muslim giving Dawah assists us in developing our empathy for other non Muslims and is known as - a prophetic trait.
Therefore it is not to be confused with empathy as this does not encapsulate or mean agreeing with people because,
they are non Muslim. But, rather respect our boundaries and our dietary and sexual desires towards us Muslims.
So, in conclusion giving Dawah is having the ability to enter into another's religious personality.
And experience these imaginatively experiences via our Holy Scriptures for enlightenment of his or her feelings.
So, by giving for the sake of others, a Muslim is fulfilling a duty to those in need and preventing him or her from,
becoming proud of their own generosity.

Religion makes unfalsifiable truth claims about unknowable facets of reality and uses our spiritual inclinations + desire for self-preservation to create conformity. Tom reinforced existential dread of eternal torture on every Muslim viewer about 2-3 times in this video, even though he and the rest of us can never truly *know* those kinds of things about our reality.
If you guys have "yaqeen," why don't you demonstrate that Islam can withstand scrutiny by bringing on worthy skeptics instead of just using pre-packaged softball questions? Wouldn't that better serve your audience?

    • @okami425
      @okami425 ปีที่แล้ว

Science makes plenty of unprovable claims about reality as well. A large portion of what we know scientifically can still be labeled as theories because we can't confirm them. String theory, quantinum mechanical theory, grand unification theory, and even dark matter is all theoretical. So if that's why you think religion is false than I'm sorry it doesn't hold up

    • @okami425
      @okami425 ปีที่แล้ว

And religion doesn't ask for total conformity or else there wouldn't sects who disagree with each other in just about every religion that exists today. Where's that conformity in Islam? As the sunnis, shiets, and sufis don't always get along? Where's the conformity in Christianity with our hundreds of denominations? Where's the unity in Judaism? They have sects who disagree. How about buhddism? Um nope not even them.

If they're making a claim it's on them to back it up but it goes both ways. If you claim you can be spiritual without some form of religious practice Where's the proof to back it up?
