I am an engineering student but I am now considering studying political theory once I’m done with my degree, just so I can have a well rounded understanding of the world we live in, as well as appreciate the intricate wisdoms of the Shariah. May Allah preserve you may He reunite us all in Jannah

It's an intricate topic for first time to be discussed as you did Imam Tom. All the points make so much sense. And the political and social aspect of the modern West makes more sense when you explained the over correction. I'd love to listen it multiple times and make notes with pen. Jazakallah

Mashallah, a great talk. I do request of Imam Tom to get more into possible rebuttals/responses. I agree with his points and framing, but if I were an independent listener or secularist, I would question the comparison of examples from the pre-modern totalitarian Christian era vs Islamic lands as cherry picking stories. Again, I don't think this is the case, but there are abuses and oppression across time. How can one fortify Imam Tom's comparisons?
Also, the part that needs more robust discussion (again from those who come from a different POV) is how some of the positives like the ethnic mixing/intermarriage, spread of Islam in previously heavily Christian/non-Muslim lands, etc which was attained in this secular landscape can be maintained within the one that Imam Tom is laying out. Yes, there are the societal breakdowns as a result of the modern secular philosophies, but convincing people to give up the positives won't fly. It needs to be an adapted model for our modern world somehow.

Wow, the point made at the very end was so incredibly poignant SubhanAllah. We really need to expand and evaluate what we as muslims are advocating for. It can't be an over correction or based on. Our particular present world view based on our current lived experience at this point in history. Wow. I need to sit and think about that for a good long while. Allahu akbar. Jazakallah khayr for such an enlightening and thought provoking dars!

MashaAllah Tabarak Allah Imam. Such a thought provoking conversation. Not once did I feel "lectured" as many lectures tend to be. :)
And ALL of our Prophets (as) faced such "Philosophical Liberalism" and Allah (swt) tells us this in His last and final Revelation. And the Last Prophet (saw) faced it before Europe was called that.
We must remember that our Prophet (saw) was not involved in politics as being on boards or becoming a mayor or higher. He (swt) made treaties with the one's who were governing around him (saw). Alhamdullilah And held his (saw) stance even when boycotted and abused by those around him. To the point that even he (sa) and his companions said, and when will the help of Allah come. Alhamdullilah
Just because a government "gives" you the right to vote doesn't mean you are obligated to vote. And rule by their laws. The laws of Allah (swt) supersede any law that a man can manipulate and think up, or in many cases have whispered in their ear. And as a Muslim, we are to not rule by any other than Allah's laws. Even if everyone sat down, like in the time of Martin Luther King Jr, the government continued with or without them. So, we do what Allah (swt) commands. And nothing more, because adding to this Deen is a biddah. And takes you off the path. Adhubillah No matter how many ways you try to justify it.
Living as a Muslim in the Liberal Sharia of the West:
    We give them their jizah/taxes
We don't lie, steal, or manipulate/ weights and measures
We don't enlist in their army's as they are not forced to enlist in ours.
We continue to be kind to our neighbors, who ever they may be.
We become instrumental in orchestrating how to rebuild what has been torn down by their Sharia. Even if we have to use our own hands and our own resources.
We give to the poor to eat of that which Allah (swt) commands. Yes, halal meat. If that is what we eat then that is what they are given, no less. Alhamdullilah If we don't have halal meat, then give dahl and millet and teach how to prepare it. (Just an example.:) but you get my point)
We abide by Allah's laws and HE will keep HIS promise to us. Surah An Nisa 147 What would Allah get by punishing you, if you are grateful and believe? Allah is Appreciating, All-Knowing. ... Alhamdullilah
May Allah (swt) guide us to a higher way of living, His way, and give us the courage and fortitude to show all mankind for Islam was sent for ALL of mankind. Amen Amen Amen

Many of the youth in my community are falling prey to liberalism, feminism, atheism etc and I don’t think the imams are reaching them (they are not open to listening). why? he is from USA. English is his first language. He has a community of believers. which islamic country is even suitable for folks like Tom? unfortunately none. The islamic countries have massively failed the Ummah. Please don't mention Turkey. I moved there, sold everything, bought an apartment, tried to make Hijrah there. It just DOESN'T WORK. THEY DON'T WANT REVERTS OR FOR THAT MATTER ANYONE WHO IS NOT TURKISH. Tried to make Hijrah in my husband's country of origin, didn't work. Everyone basically acted like we were CRAZY and told us to go back to USA where everything in their viewpoint is "rosy" and prosperous and where we can supposedly do anything we want. Lol.

Can you please adress marxis., neo marxism, critical theory, Hermeticism and Gnosticism. I have been listening to james lindsay, as a teacher and jave experienced much ofbwhat he has said. I tried to share some of this information with my friend group and found iut that one of them believes in something called critical islam and marxist islam and she cut ties with me because i said i didnt velieve in systemic racism as James Lindsay defines it as the system being the world made by the demiurge that we all jave to escape. This was enough for her to cut ties with me completely.
I am trying ro find out more from muslim sources and so far you touch on some of it but not all of this. Please please go into theae things more.
Is marxism a religion? Is neo marxism or "woke" including critical social justice theories a religion that we should be wary of?

  • @chuckhillier4153

I'm not a Christian. Nor am I Muslim, nor Buddhist nor Hindu. So, I defend no religion. It seems to me that Imam Tom is intellectually dishonest when he points out when one philosophy fails to meet its ideals but does not describe the failings in the Muslim world. I have listened to many hours of his lectures. In those, he points out that Irani, Pakistani, Indonesian, governments all fall short while claiming to be Islamic states. In fact, he has said that no existing "Islamic state" has lived up to Muslim ideals. So, all are flawed in practice, are they not?

    • @chuckhillier4153

Thank you for your reply. For instance, at 32:20 in his talk, Imam Tom states that "the things liberalism claims to do well, Islam does better," after giving a few examples of Western intolerance. He fails to cite any Islamic state that does any of it better. He does not compare the Liberal ideal with the Islamic ideal. He compares the Islamic ideal with Liberal practice and then claims Islamic practice is better but apparently can't cite any such superior Islamic practice.@@vmoses1979

It means the modern Muslim world is uprooted from its organic development, and mostly exists as reactions to European modernism, either as former colonies, protectorates or wholesale imitators.
The West also suffers from this problem as a shell of its former self, a secular liberal pantomime wearing the mask of the Greco-Roman civilization and Christendom. But since it is an internal development - which eradicated other indigenously European mode of living - the West doesn't feel it as an alien imposition.
