I see a cute little pair of goat horns in the edamame :) Btw Miss Sheila paint some little rocks red with little green painted stems (get those pretty little girls to do them for you) Put them in your strawberry beds. The birds will go after them thinking they're strawberries and realize they're rocks - and they won't trust the real strawberries to not be rocks later and they'll leave them alone! :)
Thanks for joining us tonight.
Dear Prudence, love that name! One of my favorite Beatles songs!
@@tommathews3964 Why thank you, I'm rather partial to it myself :)
another use is as a TRAP CROP around border of your farm...certain bugs like to eat the roots....and birds and squirrels live the seeds...so better having those things chomp your sunflowers on perimeter then your tomatoes and melons.
I have about 30 volunteer tall sunflowers all over part of my property. Last year I had chickens in one spot, and I would throw the heads over to them to eat.. Now I have pretty flowers to look at. 😉
LOVE Y'ALL - you are the BEST DADGUM gardening show on the internet!!! Received my CogHill Sunflower collection, can't wait to get planting!
Can you teach us about dahlias?
Great idea! :)
I would love to get a dehydrator. Just planted sunflowers today! Three kinds from you. Is that the old goat sticking out of the basket behind papa Hoss?
This year I've played with growing sunflowers just for bees bc we used to have a honey bee nest but this year they didn't come back to normal spot so I grew em and I've really enjoyed how much my ol lady has enjoyed em. She don't even bitch about the pollen . So as this show was goin on I was stalking up the cart to grow more this fall. I see now why Mr hoss likes em.
Great video. Lots of information about sun flowers, thanks.
Oh Thank you Ms Sheila , I made your stuffed peppers with all different kind of Peppers we are growing , They were AMAZING , ABSOLUTELY AMAZING & Im gonna make some more this weekend and Flash freeze them 1st before freezing in a freezer saver bags so they dont stick together ,
I want a dehydrator but they are out of our budget , Im doubling if not tripling our Onions this fall & planning our spring Garden already as With prices , Im worried alot more people are gonna buy more seeds .
So this fall I will be ordering forsure 600 onions possibly 800 Creole Red & Texas Sweet with more Ammonium Sulfate get it all at once ....
My Mixed peppers are amazing & our sunflowers are taller then our Deck which is tall - they are some shorter , I think those were the Jackle mix , but the others oh my at least 12 feet tall ....I will send in pictures.

I purchased the White Light Sunflower seeds. My word, that flower is stunning!
I love my “little” dehydrator. I’ve never tried onions. I just keep learning from you all. Zucchini chips are our thing. Sprinkled with a little Tony Chachere’s before processing. Yummy. I’m definitely trying white sunflowers next year. Hot and dry in Denver. We feel like the goat; find a basket of cool edamame and collapse. Oh, one last thing; Intended in the most lovingly way - maybe back to the drawing board on that new intro.
Sheila - you look so pretty with our hair down!
Thank you, so sweet
6 to 8 inches? of RAIN? That is what we in Southern Arizona received all year, last year. Holy Moly.
Ol goats behind momma hoss in basket !
Thanks love the show
Correct thanks for joining us Jon
I love everything your show involves and can't wait for the next episode to come out! I see the old goat in the bean basket! See ya on the next one...
Thy
Planning on doubling my sunflowers next year. They have been awesome the last couple years. Thanks!
They self seeds ,I gave away some of my seedlings,at least the one I had ,don't know the kind because they were baby plants given to me ,now there's all over the place
Great show. I always learn from you. Thanks.
Glad to hear it!
I dehydrate onions, peppers, tomato skins (makes really good powder to flavor dishes) okra...holy moly you can rehydrate it and fry it in the winter, or use in soups and stews. I have dehydrated garlic as well. Have Basil fixing to go in tonight. Oregano too. The possibilities are endless.
Sounds great!
Oh yea, I have the Autumn sunflower in my yard also 👍👍👍👍👍and Yes the Joker sunflower , I bought a bunch of different kinds as they were my daughter April anns age 19 forever 😢 favorite , so I grow them in her memory 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wonderful!
I would really like to see more of your raised gardens. I live on top of an ozark mountain and I have to garden in raised beds. I'm trying new things and would love to see what you do.
will do
Oh girl! I make green tomato salsa. It’s the bomb.
Y'all are great!
Appreciate it, Joe! You are too bud!
Old goat was a little tougher this week hiding behind Mama Hoss. I sure hope hes able to get out of that wire basket :)
I hope so too!
I ordered the Cog Hill Farm Collection They didn't get very tall but I planted them to early.
You two are awesome
Thanks Penny
I see goat 🐐 over Miss Hoss left shoulder green basket. Btw those Jumbolia Okra are doing awesome. The Indian corn flour is really great. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks Ricky
I got a 5lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds from ya'll. They are growing beautifully.
Y’all have a wonderful week! Love the corny jokes!
Mama hoss sure looks strong 💪!! 💕
👏
Would love to see mama Hoss’s sunflowers in her raised beds and which variety they are. I need to get mine ordered soon.
Coming soon!
Y'all getting sneaky on that old goat! I see him, but I won early in the year so I'm out. Fun show tonight! I love all things sunflower! Getting ready to lay in another planting.
Thanks as always, Tom!
I just made green tomato relish , green tomato salsa verde and tomorrow will be canning green tomato pickles. Never tried these before. Love the adventure.
Sounds great!
Rain is crazy here in NW FL. Same issues. Splitting fruits. WEEDS !!!!! Heavy sigh.
We dehydrate onions on covered porch. lol
Haven’t grown sunflowers in years. You all make them sound so interesting though. Think I’ll try one of the dwarf varieties. Old goat is scrunched way down in the wire basket behind Mama Hoss.
Correct thanks for joining us
That old goat is layin down on the job with those sweet dumplin squash on the shelf behind Sheila's head. Tell him to get up and get to tending the garden!
Thanks for joining us tonight.
Great show! Old goat is in the basket. Also, I ordered my fall tomatoes and I left off the hossinators. Could I call have that added or should I make another order?

We had yet another severe storm yesterday in WNC. It tore out 7 of my 8' tall sunflowers. I cried like a baby. I put a pillow case over my sunflower head for our eating. Leave the others for the birds. I want to try those salt and roast sunflowers. I'm happy to send these rain storms to someone that needs rain. Have a great week Hoss family!
Sorry to hear this Sue Thanks for joining us tonight.
@@gardeningwithhoss Thank you. This show is awesome. Learned alot.
Planted a 16 foot row this year. Only have one viable plant left. The raccoons love them.
I believe the Old Goat is hiding in the sm. basket 2nd shelf behind Mrs. Hoss
Correct
Looks like the old goat is in the green basket behind Mama Hoss, he's getting pretty good at hiding!!! ✌🏻
Thanks for joining us tonight.
What is your routine when using sunflowers as cover crop? Do you cut stems at ground level and leave root system to rot?
Sometimes I do and plant around them. It just really depends on my next crop. If I'm doing carrots next, I would pull them up.
QUESTION; Do the dwarf sunflowers have as much taproot and nutrient benefit to the soil as the taller sunflower? Are they pretty much equivalent? Would it be beneficial to soak the seeds before planting?
Yes. Sorta, use dwarfs where you cannot use the tall ones.
I dehydrated mushrooms last year.
That is on my to do list.
You have to dry onions with a citrus. No more strong smell or burning eyes. I dry about two trays of oranges with the other trays of onions. Use the oranges in hot tea. Delicious!
great tip
I think everyone with a dehydrator has done the same. I do onions on the back porch now. Garlic the same lol
yes, will do them somewhere other than kitchen next time.
Thanks for sharing the video, I live in the DFW area of Texas.
Any growing/fertilizer tips for a first timer growing sunflowers?
And what about prepping/germinating the seeds before planting?
I'm going to be planting a variety of edible sunflowers this next year in 2023 for myself and the chickens.
Other than Black Oil, which other sunflower varieties are edible and grow tall.
We are working on a Sunflower growing guide and should have it ready and on line before spring planting. Black Oil is a great choice. Also the Salt and Roast is a great choice.

@@gardeningwithhoss ,
Thank You
We too are way too much rain here in central Florida. Our garden is taking a hit especially our tomatoes, We have a huge area og watermelon about 30 X 15, it is covered with watermelon the size of basketballs, the mellons are dark green have no idea what kind they are, a friend gave us some plants. I keep checking them everyday and an finding more babies growing on the vine, How do I tell when these are ready? they are solid green and big!
When the tendril is dry and belly is yellow
One of my favorite flowers is black-eyed Susan, which grows wild here. Do you think it would grow well mixed in with sunflowers?
yes, it would
I think the old goat is behind Momma Hoss in the wire basket.
Correct, thanks for joining us
@@gardeningwithhoss thanks for putting these shows together and the great information. I especially like the information on the varieties! Keep up the good work,
I am totally off subject! I love good cowpeas! When I moved to Missouri, I planted some Mississippi silver side brown crowder peas too early. I lost my seeds. I am looking for that seed again. Do you know anyone that grows it? The pod turns a silver-white when ripe.
Oh wow! no let them be
Great show! We're kinda new..is it sacrilege for some to eat watermelon with 🧂 salt on it? I love salt on mine. Thank you both! Hope I didn't open the ultimate argument. Lol
Not at all
Fall planting of sugar snap peas possible in Zone 8?
yes it is
Have you ever made flour from the inside of the sunflower stalks?
No, but something I'm going to try.
The old goat is in the basket behind Mrs Sheila
Correct thanks for joining us
May we have the recipe for the green tomatoes? Thank you
yes
The old goat is behind mamma hoss in the beans
Thanks for joining us tonight. **
The old goat is in the basket behind Mrs. Hoss
Correct thanks for joining us Karen
I planted red and yellow bell peppers. They are huge. When do they start changing colors to red and yellow?
Not sure, but once they start turning you will have a lot. Mine just started.
When do you fertilize Russian mammoth sunflowers?
When they come up and every 7-10 days
Hahaha what is with that new intro?! Lol y’all are cool
The funniest thing I ever saw was a lady doing a video on roasting and eating sunflower seeds. She put the whole head in the oven and then bit into the center and tried to eat the whole center with seeds. Didn't take them off the head , then she said she wasn't a fan. Lol!
Oh my, that was bad.
Oh.. So now that I have tried sprouting 2 of your different seedless watermelons, which I only got a couple to sprout, out of the 10 seeds... Now you give us tips on how to sprout them.. Can I get replacement seeds? I thought it was me, so I didn't complain. All the Charleston Grey (pollinator) watermelons sprouted. I can provide my order number, if you need it. 🙂
yes, call customer service tomorrow, we will replace with a like variety if we do not have what you ordered. They will need order number and tell them OK'd by mama hoss 2297693999
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you!!!
Looks like old goat horns sticking out of the right side of the basket behind Shelia's head. I planted several varieties of sunflowers this year late and they have not bloomed out yet up here in VA.
Oh wow!
I live in an arid western desert. I plant sunflowers. Give them lots of water. They grow up. Looking good. Then. The aphids, the ants and the rust moves in. I can't treat the plants often enough or well enough to wipe out each and the plant ends up dying. :'(
Very sad! My first year growing some.
I have a lot of little ants on mine but I don't see any aphids and am wondering what the ants are doing. They seem to have got worms out of my first flower but I sprayed with neem oil a couple times and it doesn't seem to do anything 🤷♂️
@@Laurel-Crowned I had worms in the flowerhead also. Turned out they were caterpillars from moths laying eggs on the seed head. I've been told that the ants carry aphids up on to plants and then "milk" the aphids for a secretion they give off. Apparently, where there are ants marching up the plant, there will be aphids.
👍
🌻
Thanks
They also plant sunflowers in nuclear waste areas to pull in from the ground.
I bag my sunflower heads, otherwise the birds would get all the seeds. I grow sunflowers for animal feed.
Old Goat: Kind of looks like horns sticking up out of the basket behind Mr. Hoss.
Thanks for joining us tonight.
I keep waiting on Hoss to get up and go get another melon drop it on the table to bust it open and eat it.
Thanks for joining us tonight, Scott. It a wonder he didn't
We lost everything between the drought then the rain.
Harvested the last tomatoes today. To try to save some.
Sorry to hear this.
Goat is in the soybeans
Those sunflowers were beautiful
Thanks Pamela
