Gary Moore was such a nice and humble Guy and poured his heart and emotion into his instrument and Randy Rhoads was the same type of individual who most definitely would have created even more innovative and different styles of music had he lived. Fortunately they both left us a gift with both of their brilliant music that they created in their lifetimes. May both of these gifted artists live forever in our hearts and our souls and R.IP.
I was lucky enough to see Randy twice, Blizzard and Diary of a Madman. 1st two concerts. I saw Gary once, did not know who he was, opened for Rush. I have been a fan ever since. Gary was just simply FN incredible, like Randy in that they are both very special and will be missed sorely.
Dr. Phibes in Red well hold on Randy was only 25 when died, Gary was near 60 so you can't say before his time also his Drug Abuse didn't help his situation. He was a great musician but RR would've been one of the very best if he'd have lived longer, sadly we ended up with fake macho man Zakk Wylde lol in Randys place what a clown he is he covers his bad playing with effects all the time

He wasn’t blown away by any of them until Dana Strum(who had auditioned to be Ozzy’s bass player), told Ozzy before he went back to England he had one more player he had to hear. That guy was Randy Rhoads and Ozzy gave him the job after hearing Randy doing warm ups for a minute.

Garry was amazing! but people forget that Brian Robertson was 17 when he went on tour to record live and dangerous..... now thats impressive.... All three of them were just incredible!
I don't think he was 17 during live and dangerous. That would've made him born in 1960. He was only born in 56. So when live and dangerous was recorded he would've been 21.
Robbo was 17 when he joined Lizzy and Live n Dangerous was recorded between 1976 and 78 so he was 19 - 21 during that period. Robbo was an incredible player. Nothing like Gary. Very different. Gary even recognised that Lizzy were much better when Robbo was in it than when he was there.
Two of the best guitar players in hard rock/metal. Gary has always been my favourite player though, so upset when he passed away. I wasn't born yet when Randy passed away. A lot of the younger metal players these days can shred but they've got no feel or character, they just sound like robots when they play. They don't even come close to the 80's rock metal guitarists.
Saw Gary on the wild frontier tour.. Or so I think it was one of em.. With my brother... Wow that's a few years ago... Tried to get in for the G force gig supporting whitesnake.... I had no ticket.... Tried to get one outside.. No luck..... Loved to have seen that gig 😂😂

That party included lots of alcohol but he was sober the next day. Maybe hungover, but sober. His band mates were heroin addicts. That means their "party" was 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other terms, their "party" was a lifestyle that quickly started to reduce their ability to perform at a level Gary found acceptable. A band is about fun if you make your living doing something other than the band. If one makes their living from playing in the band, then the band is a business and needs to be treated as such. Gary saw the heroin addicts in the band throwing their lives away, and at the same time, they were throwing his income away. His choices were: go down with them or leave. Gary made the right choice. Years later, after a long successful solo career, he was still a big drinker but he never went to work drunk.
I completely agree with the folks who have said it's an unfair comparison between Gary and Randy, most of this thread is Gary-heavy, and some is quite nasty. I personally go WAY on the Randy side, not so much for the talent and complexity but for the melodic structures of Randy's solos that work for me. Mr. Crowley, Goodbye to Romance, Revelations etc. have personal meaning to me, like scratching a dog's neck and he starts kicking his leg uncontrollably... That's what Randy's guitar work is (was) to me. Gary is awesome, I'm just a Randy guy above anyone.

He had George Lynch on a short list after audtioning hundreds of LA ‘s young guns but didn’t pull the trigger on any of them while Sharon still was pushing Ozzy to hire Gary Moore. All that changed when Dana Strum had Randy come down and audition for Ozzy and after warming up Randy was given the job.
Joseph Gurtler David Arden was managing Ozzy at the time, Sharon came along shortly after Blizzard was recorded. It’s in Bob Daisley’s book ‘For Fact’s Sake’. David was none too keen about spending money, flying an unknown guitar player from L.A. to the UK.
Aside from the time she saw Ozzy at Le Parc hotel when he was between Sabbath and his solo career, she was not The Blizzard of Ozz Band/ Ozzy’s manager from the jump.

To be fair there are some incredible young players out there today. The problem isn't the talent, it's the record industry and the consumers. The companies won't pay like they used to for rock band's studio time. They churn out the cheapest, digital pop shit they can produce because by and large consumers don't buy albums anymore. They steal music online and download a song here, a song there. Artists don't make money off their albums anymore so there aren't as many great rock bands getting record deals nowadays. Furthermore the shit the kids like nowadays isn't guitar driven like it used to be.
+Christopher Hitchens Not to mention the fact that many of these super amazing players are in bands that produce bland music or the music is really good, but the singer sounds like cookie monster. I've been playing guitar for most of my life, and I can't do some of the things these kids are doing. I also think that a lot of these shredders can become boring after a while. With Randy there was build ups to the flash. Now the whole song has to be flash, and there's no part of it that grabs you, in fact you become so desensitized to it, that repeat listens just lose their impressive quality.

I remember an ozzy interview where he said he really wanted Gary to join and even recorded with him but his solos were too much! Sounds weird considering who he's worked with for the last 40 years....
I didn't know that gary moore was involved in finding a guitar player for ozzy Osbourne, i'm surprised that gary knew randy, but I guess that in the music business everybody knows everybody, at the time when randy was joining the ozzy Osbourne band, randy already recorded two albums with quiet riot, it was in the late seventies, before the big success of the band, but there was nothing interesting in his guitar work on those two forgotten albums, I guess that he continued to learn his classical lessons when he was with ozzy, this is the only way to understand the difference between his guitar work with quiet riot to his work with ozzy
I agree with you went to high school in the late 1990s and someone gave me cassette recording to Quiet Riot it sounded like Muppet music but I heard Randy had to hold back for those Japanese records and some of his live recordings show boating AND you can hear the nuances he didn't have much time from 1979 until blizzard of Oz came out so I think that Talent was already there maybe Quiet Riot was holding him .... and perhaps he was holding them back... he definitely had a bigger calling than Quiet Riot and I think bigger calling in Ozzy had he lived an amazing guitar player Randy was

There are plenty of wrecks every day in the LA area and Randy could've died just as easily as an anonymous, great, aspiring guitarist that no one had ever heard of! Brad, I think not. Our Creator brings us into this existence, and our Creator decides when our time here is done. It didn't matter where randy was that final day, the outcome was going to be the same. I think he was guided into Ozzy's band to make his mark on this world at a young age because his Creator gave him incredible talented and knew Randy wasn't going to be here long.
the very first short lived blizzard of ozz was a band called necromandus.minus there singer there guitarist r.i.p baz dunnery could snap a string and tune it in while he played it he was world class iommi managed them and they supported sabbath on tour sabbath said they were the 2nd sabbath they recorded an albums worth of material with ozzy.and it didn't work out.that stuff is lost now.a band called dirty tricks recorded with ozzy next then he went back to sabbath then when he left randy and co became blizzard of ozz.
I don't hear the Moore nuance in Mr Crowley at all and I have a good ear for borrowed phrases or melodies . I know Rhoads used Brouwers melody for the intro to Diary of a Madman but Rhoads improved on it and made it his own . Besides , Ozzy heard Rhoads practicing the musical piece and told him he better put it on record or he would punch him in the face again.

I completely agree with the folks who have said it's an unfair comparison between Gary and Randy, most of this thread is Gary-heavy, and some is quite nasty. I personally go WAY on the Randy side, not so much for the talent and complexity but for the melodic structures of Randy's solos that work for me. Mr. Crowley, Goodbye to Romance, Revelations etc. have personal meaning to me, like scratching a dog's neck and he starts kicking his leg uncontrollably... That's what Randy's guitar work is (was) to me. Gary is awesome, I'm just a Randy guy above anyone.

Gary Moore was Jet and Ozzy's first choice. Gary, Randy, Bob, Ozzy all went to shows together once Randy came to the U.K . Gary turned it down, and the real reason is because Ozzy was well known as being an unreliable drunk and a risk. R.i.P Gary.....
Mysterywhiteboy78 not so fast bud, it was Sharon who wanted Gary Miore and has said so on many occasions, Ozzy wasn’t having it because Gary was well known and Ozzy wanted his own band that he picked. He had George Lynch on a short list after audtioning hundreds of LA ‘s young guns but didn’t pull the trigger on any of them while Sharon still was pushing Ozzy to hire Gary Moore. All that changed when Dana Strum had Randy come down and audition for Ozzy and after warming up Randy was given the job.
Joseph Gurtler David Arden was managing Ozzy at the time, Sharon came along shortly after Blizzard was recorded.

David was none too keen about spending money, flying an unknown guitar player from L.A. to the UK.
Aside from the time she saw Ozzy at Le Parc hotel when he was between Sabbath and his solo career, she was not The Blizzard of Ozz Band/ Ozzy’s manager from the jump.

To be fair there are some incredible young players out there today. The problem isn't the talent, it's the record industry and the consumers. The companies won't pay like they used to for rock band's studio time. They churn out the cheapest, digital pop shit they can produce because by and large consumers don't buy albums anymore. They steal music online and download a song here, a song there. Artists don't make money off their albums anymore so there aren't as many great rock bands getting record deals nowadays. Furthermore the shit the kids like nowadays isn't guitar driven like it used to be.

+Christopher Hitchens Not to mention the fact that many of these super amazing players are in bands that produce bland music or the music is really good, but the singer sounds like cookie monster. I've been playing guitar for most of my life, and I can't do some of the things these kids are doing. I also think that a lot of these shredders can become boring after a while. With Randy there was build ups to the flash. Now the whole song has to be flash, and there's no part of it that grabs you, in fact you become so desensitized to it, that repeat listens just lose their impressive quality.

Gary was an awesome player . Eddie Van Halen loved his playing . Someone said he ripped of Gary kinda on one of the 1984 album's songs .
Sharon was not with Ozzy or around Randy until after they recorded the Blizzard of Ozz album so therefore he already wrote Mr Crowley before seeing Gary play.

I have really heard enough of guitar players, now, Gary Moore as well, saying Ozzy wanted me. I don't believe Ozzy knew what he wanted at the time, but Randy got the gig and with out him I'm sad to say Ozzy may have been finished! Blizzard and Diary set the metal world alight, because of those two. R.I.P Randy Rhoads..
I remember an ozzy interview where he said he really wanted Gary to join and even recorded with him but his solos were too much! Sounds weird considering who he's worked with for the last 40 years....
I didn't know that gary moore was involved in finding a guitar player for ozzy Osbourne, i'm surprised that gary knew randy, but I guess that in the music business everybody knows everybody, at the time when randy was joining the ozzy Osbourne band, randy already recorded two albums with quiet riot, it was in the late seventies, before the big success of the band, but there was nothing interesting in his guitar work on those two forgotten albums, I guess that he continued to learn his classical lessons when he was with ozzy, this is the only way to understand the difference between his guitar work with quiet riot to his work with ozzy
I agree with you went to high school in the late 1990s and someone gave me cassette recording to Quiet Riot it sounded like Muppet music but I heard Randy had to hold back for those Japanese records and some of his live recordings show boating AND you can hear the nuances he didn't have much time from 1979 until blizzard of Oz came out so I think that Talent was already there maybe Quiet Riot was holding him .... and perhaps he was holding them back... he definitely had a bigger calling than Quiet Riot and I think bigger calling in Ozzy had he lived an amazing guitar player Randy was

warguy403 - Yeah, the plane crash was an accident but who's to say that Randy wouldn't have been killed the same day in a car wreck... There are plenty of wrecks every day in the LA area and Randy could've died just as easily as an anonymous, great, aspiring guitarist that no one had ever heard of!
Death finds us all when it's our time, at least he had a chance to show the world some of his creativity and spirit!

Butterfly effect - many things could have prevented Randy from being in that plane, or stopped the pilot from being an idiot in the first place. A different breakfast that day, a bad hangover, rain, a funny TV show, anything.

Brad, I think not. Our Creator brings us into this existence, and our Creator decides when our time here is done. It didn't matter where randy was that final day, the outcome was going to be the same. I think he was guided into Ozzy's band to make his mark on this world at a young age because his Creator gave him incredible talented and knew Randy wasn't going to be here long.

the very first short lived blizzard of ozz was a band called necromandus.minus there singer there guitarist r.i.p baz dunnery could snap a string and tune it in while he played it he was world class iommi managed them and they supported sabbath on tour sabbath said they were the 2nd sabbath they recorded an albums worth of material with ozzy.and it didn't work out.that stuff is lost now.a band called dirty tricks recorded with ozzy next then he went back to sabbath then when he left randy and co became blizzard of ozz.

Two incredible players but for me I thought Gary Moore had a better guitar tone
I don't hear the Moore nuance in Mr Crowley at all and I have a good ear for borrowed phrases or melodies . I know Rhoads used Brouwers melody for the intro to Diary of a Madman but Rhoads improved on it and made it his own . Besides , Ozzy heard Rhoads practicing the musical piece and told him he better put it on record or he would punch him in the face again.
