When Ozzy started getting foggy and slurring his words, everybody (including Ozzy) thought it was the drugs. Then, according to the story, a friend of his who was a nurse said to him "I think you have Parkin Syndrome." She was right- it's a cousin of Parkinson's Disease. Nope, wasn't the drugs after all!

Randy was 23 years old when he recorded Blizzard of Ozz and 24 when he recorded Diary of a Madman. That still amazes me.

He really was the one. His playing style is indistinguishable anytime you hear it. You can never mix him up with anyone and that’s something that a lot of players should try to aspire to.

Randy's intro guitar part was inspired by Leo Brouwer's "Etude #6". Many of us here in SoCal were fortunate to study with Randy's first classical teacher, Robert Vaught (Glendale College 1977-94) & his former students. Randy was a local legend here along with Eddie Van Halen & George Lynch. Something in the water I guess! We were truly blessed.
It has always blown my mind that there was a time - maybe it was brief (76/77?) - that you could have seen Eddie, Randy, and George all playing the same club circuit. I wish I could have been there.

Ozzy's bass player Bob Daisley wrote this song. Said Daisley: "I really wrote that one about myself. When I was 16 I had my first nervous breakdown and it really f---ed me up. I was a sensitive kid and I have always been a sensitive person. I suppose you have to be sensitive being in the arts. I wrote the words about myself. Quite often we have problems and we are our own worst enemies and that is why 'Enemies fill up the pages one by one in the diary. Are they me?' I am my own worst enemy.
Randy Rhoads had the rough idea for the song 'Diary of a Madman' and I came up with title. I wrote all of the lyrics as well on the album. Ozzy would come and go from rehearsals. One day he came in and we played him 'Diary of a Madman' and because it had funny timing he couldn't get his head around. He said, 'Who the f--k do you think I am? Frank Zappa!' We said, 'You sing in this part but you don't sing here. This timing goes like this etc.' He started to like it when he got his head around but at first he was like, 'This is not for me'."

Bob Daisley(Bassist) wrote the lyrics for this song about his own mental health and turmoil he was going through early on in his life. He was literally on the brink of madness and suicide. Randy musically captured what Bob was feeling for this song. Awesome!

make no mistake, bob daisley wrote ALL of the goddamn songs on both Blizzard and Diary, and Bark at the Moon, and of course Sharon didn't fucking pay him a cock suking dime like everyone else during her fucking tenure - yeah, sad but true... Her dad taught her right as a record industry exec. - beat and fuck over everyone but yourself - and that she did for the better part of 3 decades. Can't blame her I suppose, got to make that last fucking penny just like daddy Don taught you - got more respect for a mother fucker that goes to prison for 20 years for robbing a bank - at least they have the balls to shove the gun in your face and not hide the robbery in some fine print on some bullshit bogus contract that you get conned into signing - but hey, fuck it, if she's cool with it, rock on... It's a shame because as smart as she is, she dosen't need to rip off musicians - I guess it's just genetic or in that arden bloodline...

The meter feels so jarringly disjointed over and over again.
Randy's solo soooooo captures what depression feels like - half in reality, half out - teetering on the brink of an abyss. Its beyond genius to describe in music like he does - such an outlandish feeling which depression brings into a person's mind. His imagination on the guitar is crazy sometimes.
As a rocker and metalhead of over 40+ years, I dont think there's a better song ever written.
We obviously missed out on so much greatness that Randy would've brought to us, but thank God he gave us this, before he passed away..

Ex-Rainbow & Blizzard Of Ozz bass player, Bob Daisley had huge hand in all of the songwriting on Ozzy's first 3 albums. He was never given proper credit for what he did. Everyone just assumed it was Ozzy and Randy. But it was actually Randy & Bob. (lyrics too... These are Bob's lyrics, written about the depression he suffered). Randy came up with the riffs and Bob pieced them together and arranged the songs. Lee Kerslake played drums on this record (despite the incorrect liner notes) and he also helped put every song together for this amazing album.
I can't even imagine the heights Randy would have reached had he lived. Masterclass virtuoso

Everyone left and right would have chomped at the bit to get him to play on their records. Like when Santana did it with different artists or when Eddie played the Beat It solo with Michael Jackson. His talents would have been in HIGH demand!!!
At the time Randy had recorded music with Ozzy, he had ALREADY mastered the guitar to express emotion and compose music. At that time and at that age for most guitar players, Randy’s peers have a high level playing and skills but usually not yet masters of their craft. EVH was revolutionary for introducing finger tapping and paying attention to tone. In my opinion, Randy did it all. Composition, tone, skill and technique were at his fingertips on command. Randy is is the final guitar boss to beat and as of yet, I can’t say any has beaten him. I love metal and rock and admire many other guitar players but it’s hard to point at a guy and say, he can compose, and play with better emotion, skill and control as Randy. BUT OF COURSE, emotion is subjective so that is open for interpretation but it’s almost a global conclusion that listening to Randy’s music is unforgettable and meaningful.
If you like Ozzy and Randy together, you gotta analyze “Flying High Again”. An incredible rock song with guitar playing that will melt your ear drums and Ozzy’s voice never sounded more at home.
That tune, as well as "Over The Mountain" is pure Randy shredding!!❤
Very unfortunate that the circumstances of his death & the cocaine use of the pilot/bus driver plus the fact his license wasn't current, he had mental health issues, had killed someone else in a helicopter accent and had, for all purposes STOLEN THE PLANE.. and Randy was seen struggling with him immediately prior to the crash.
Now listen to the lyrics again.. & it's all there. He'd had a dream he died a few days before the accident. This song is a ridiculous foreshadowing. The pilot, Aycock, was indeed "Flying High Again"..

Randy is definitely my favorite player ever. Such a shame he died at 25. Imagine what would have been if he’d had the chance to give the world more. He’s made a huge impact on my life and is the biggest reason I’m a musician.

Randy mixed up his runs with harmonic minor and major , diatonic, melodic and altered scales, chromatic. That is what really made him so unexpected and added to the "crazy" sound of Ozzy. He was brilliant, no question at all.
Ozzy was lost when Randy perished, but released “Tribute “ , a live concert recording that. really captures Randy at the top of his game. Mr. Crowley is an incredible example and is, to me, the best recorded version of that song. You like Randy ? You won’t be able to stop listening to this recording.
I think Tribute has the definitive version of Crazy Train.

Ozzy's voice is the voice of mental and emotional anguish. He's not faking it . His fans adore him for his transparency. The part of the face that you are referring to is prominent when you are heartbroken. Ozzy touches your heart in a unique way. We love you Ozzy.
Ozzy's voice was once described as "the sound of an open wound". I think this is why so many people relate to it. Even Ozzy admits he was never a great "singer" in the Dio sense. But his voice is the perfect conveyer of psychological trauma and pain.

I don’t know if it’s normal , but I cried through this whole thing. It takes me back to my bedroom when this came out. I saw this concert on my 16th birthday 1-24-82 in Chicago. It’s hard to explain the magnitude of the impact of these two albums. Sabbath breaks up , they get Ronnie James Dio and make Heaven and Hell. And it’s a great album. Then out of nowhere comes Crazy Train. And it just blew everyone away. Randy and Ozzy were an overnight success !! And it just kept getting better. Song after song on their debut album turned into hits. Then this album comes out. Again blew everyone away. And the tour sold out arenas everywhere…..And then halfway through the tour , the tragedy announced over the radio , Randy had been killed in a plane crash. I still remember where I was sitting when I first heard the news. I’m 56 now. And like I said , just had me crying through the whole video. What an experience and time to live through.

I cried some, too. I wish I was hearing it for the first time again. But very few albums out there pack the sort of vibe that this one does, and the ability to carry me back to a specific point in time.
My first concert was Ozzy with Jake. I missed out on Randy, but I did see Cliff Burton on that tour shortly before he was killed.

Your reaction to Randy's playing is exactly why I started playing guitar 100 years ago (well, not really, but it feels like it some days). Randy was one of the most underappreciated guitarists. Still is, actually. It is funny, I didn't understand just how much of a genius he was until I started to learn about music, not just playing an instrument. His compositional choices, his rythmic pallette, his tone...everything was superbly crafted to evoke a multitude of sensations in every piece he played. So, so far ahead of his time and completely overlooked in the era of speed licks and finger tapping. Although I love Eddy VH, Randy was the superior musician.
And I gotta say, I really LOVE the way you dissect and react to music I have been listening to my whole life. Your ear and your perception of these pieces completely changes the way I listen to music now. Thank you!!

We are the same age, Randy & Ozzy got me thru a very rough period in my life then. I ended up spending most of the 80's high and/or drunk, I really don't know how I survived!
I LOVE how you do not try to tear down a performer but teach the example of a style. Ozzie was never the model of a perfect voice, but he IS Ozzie. His voice paints pictures, shapes images in the songs he performed(s), and rocks. I’m an old fart but will always love the performers of my youth. Of all Genres
IMO, this has always been Ozzy's very best song. There's so much going on. And I think they use music as a language to tell us how to feel moreso than any other of their songs. It's a beautiful and brilliant piece of music.

I have had my own mental issues my whole life. Watching this video and listening to Randy had tears rolling down my face. If Randy had lived longer, How many more Masterpieces would he have given us? RIP Randy!!!

Little known fact, that Randy searched out guitar teachers while on tour to pick their brains. He claimed there is someone that always know more. Simply the best..
Randy was under contract to record one more album with Ozzy's drunk ass. After that he was going back to obtain his music degree.

This is why Randy is the greatest. People always get mired in technical debates over Eddie and Randy, but there can be no debate over Randy’s melody and phrasing dominance. The fact that a classical voice instructor has so much to say about Randy’s composition and performance speaks volumes.
EVH could never have written this.
Eddie was amazing, ground breaking, and no one could do what he did like he did.
That said, he isn’t even close to the top when it comes to technical skills and writing prowess.
Hell, he was the third best guitarist Roth played with.
Ozzy is the same. Great frontman, unique but in terms of Sabbath singers talent wise, he is behind Dio, Gillan, Gillen, Hughes, and Martin

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Blizzard is a garage band honing it’s craft, Madman is a masterpiece created by prodigy musicians.
Bob Daisley wrote these lyrics about the Depersonalization Disorder that he was suffering from at the time. The song is a masterpiece and has made me weep with tears, due to its writing, arrangement, and performance, countless times. Every time I hear it, it is like the first time.
One of his best works. It’s a damn shame that Sharon tossed him and Lee under the bus after writing two amazing albums with RR.
Bob is so greatly under rated and under appreciated. He's contributed countless times in so many ways to Ozzy's music. That Sharon tried to cut him out or even succeed in doing so is such a shitty fucking thing.

The loft is in the instrument in Randy’s hand. The agitation and irritation in Ozzy’s voice is the mad contrast. The lyrics tie it all together. It is genius.
Randy's Magnum Opus. I cannot listen to his playing without tears. Every note was placed exactly where he wanted it. I was a few years behind him in the BUSD but never got to meet him. Such a bright, talented life cut extremely short.
Thank you for reviewing Randy's music. It is emotional for many of us who were teens when he passed so young. He got me to pick-up a guitar and to integrate classical scaling. He died young but his legacy is living far beyond through all of us.
I'm not a musician but it's never to late to start. It's a beautiful thing to hear how many people were inspired by Randy. It really makes me emotional to hear tributes to my favorite guitarist.

A real master class in making one uncomfortable on purpose through his astounding abilities.
Thank you for doing this one. I've been playing guitar my whole life and Randy died when I was still a kid. In my 50s now and Randy Rhoads is still my biggest influence. This is an incredible song and the fact they didn't filter out the acoustic guitar noise (like his fingers sliding) actually adds to the melancholy feel of the song. I read somewhere he got the chord ideas for this song watching a holocaust documentary.

100% agree! I'm 50 myself & grew up listening to this stuff obsessively, which led me to pick up a guitar at around age 13. EVH, Iommi, & Saint Rhodes were my biggest influences by far as a kid starting out for sure.
This was the first time in many many moons that I've taken the time to dissect the acoustic guitars here, & the first thing that jumped out at me was the finger slides/string noise, etc, that were left in the recording. It really gives the performance an organic feeling that you don't generally hear anymore in today's super-clean, overly-polished modern recordings. What's even more outstanding to me is that I can listen to this recording all these years later & still pick up on something new to focus in on and appreciate. 💯
Hearing the fingers slide from chord to chord is part of the beauty of recording on an acoustic. I've always loved it

I'll never forget that day. I was on my way to a lesson when I heard the news on the radio. When I arrived my teacher didn't know yet, so we spent my lesson doing Randy riffs and my "Homework" for the week was this track.

Randy was at his best live imo, he had such control and musical sense in the actual moment. His lightning fast ability to leave the rhythm for a nano second add something, anything, sonically brilliant and return seamlessly is amazing. Its such a shame both that we lost him so senselessly at just 25 and we have such limited filmed concert footage.
To me, the Tribute record is One of the better examples of Randy Rhoads' sheer genius and extraordinary ability. Also, thank you so much for being as or more interested in randy's playing than Ozzy's vocals. Im certain you're introducing RR to a whole new group of people that might not have otherwise had the pleasure.
I'm 53,still cry and get goosebumps every time I hear this classically influenced piece of Randy's. The true direction he wanted to take after this tour. Kelle has told me many times how Randy didn't like playing the Sabbath covers,and was looking forward too going back to school. Truly THEEEEE GREATEST GUITARIST! R.I.P. RANDY. I named my oldest after him.
I love seeing people discover the rare talent in Randy's work. Now you know why his fans are so devoted still to this day. He's the reason I picked up the guitar at 12 and I still play now at 52. Songs like "Over The Mountain" and "SATO" were so far ahead of their time. We only got a brief glimpse into his contributions, but his star will illuminate the universe forever. Thank you for this.

Absolutely never forgotten
It was this song that put Ozzy on a whole different level from his peers. The blending of the classical instruments, choir, Randy's guitar and Ozzys vocals is honestly, one of the best arrangements of this genre. You can feel the power, hopelessness and the drawn out mental anguish in this song. This whole album honestly is about mental health, or Ozzy's mental health. I can hear elements of this in Nightwish and other bands today who like to blend the arrangements like this.
Something interesting that Ozzy said in a interview was that after all the instruments and vocals were laid down for Diary, producer Max Norman told them ok guys, I'll call you all back in the studio when its mixed and complete. So upon completion, Max is playing the album for them, and Ozzy asks, what the f%#k is this!? Ozzy had never heard production like that before. Max told him, "trust me Ozzy, this is the direction Rock and Metal is going". Ozzy listened and boy did it pay off big time.
This was Ozzy's finest hour for me. This song , "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll" and "Over The Mountain" never get old. Love your reactions!
A fun fact, Randy told ozzy when he recorded an outtake of the solo that he was not happy with it, really miserably. Ozzy told Randy to go back in the studio and spend as much time as he needed to get it the way he wanted. 2-3 days later Randy emerges from the studio happy as a clam. And thats the solo we got
I found this video last night and actually waited unti today to sit down and really enjoy it. The anticipation of watching Elizabeth's expressions was really intense and she didn't disappoint. I love watching her face melt and her eyes twinkling. I can't imagine having a spirit like hers since mine is so old and shot now. She's got a pure white energy that flows out like magic. I absolutely love these videos. I learn so much about songs I thought I already knew backwards and forwards. Yes, I knew the basics of what's coming next but I know nothing about the particulars of what things are called and how they interact. This was pure joy! Thank you, Elizabeth. When you're an old lady you're gonna love watching these too!

John Stix book: Imagine a guitarist whom nature endowed with its highest gifts. Now imagine that same guitarist in a home environment that focused and nurtured those powers, that's Randy Rhoads.
And to think, Randy was barely 24 years old when he wrote and recorded this masterpiece. He was so far beyond his contemporaries at this point.

No one was touching him by this point. Then everyone wanted to play like Randy......
The whole song is built on a tri-tone premise, the devil's interval, to keep the ear off balance and in a floaty, crazy, unresolved state then moves into Ab minor (actually G since the guitar is tuned to Eb) in dorian for the high energy yet depressed / angry / anguished sound. It's amazingly composed for such a young song writer.
You gotta listen to over the mountain!! That solo is fantastical and genius at the same time
So glad that you did this. I was one of the frequent recommenders of it. This song (to me) is a compositional masterpiece. Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley also deserve huge props for their writing and arranging skills. Ozzy,and of course Randy knock it out of the park. Personally,this song opens a flood of emotions every time I hear it. A remarkable piece of music.

This "journey through madness" song was a recent discovery of mine as well. I was particularly blown away by the part at 19:34. Wasn't expecting that setup and delivery and now can't get enough of that. This song absolutely gets to be in the "classic metal" category for me. Definitely changed my perception of Ozzy.

I've always felt that's why those two albums were great. He made the songs feel like how they were written. Incredible how he did this. Only a few guitarists can do that to music.

It never fails to amaze me how whatever the song was about, Ozzy is able to capture the "feel". It's hard to describe. It's like he becomes what the song is about. And Randy Rhoads? What can be said? Ahead of his time. A true legend.
This has always been my favorite Ozzy song. Something about the eerie feeling and the classical fusion that Randy provides really makes it unique.
WOW !!! Thanks for your dissection of this masterpiece . I bought this album immediately after its original us release in late 1981. I had seen Randy live shortly before in September on the last leg of the Blizzard of Ozz tour in Tampa Florida at 16 years old . and I counted the days down til Diary's release .I played this record wide open non stop on my record player for so long it was driving my siblings and parents crazy .I just couldn't get enough of it . I already had the Blizzard Lp and it was by far my favorite record but after seeing Randy live and then hearing all the songs off Diary I was obsessed with Randy Rhoads . he had such a strong stage presence and his playing has this way of connecting to your senses and nervous system in a way that's almost indescribable . seriously it's like it unleashes these large amounts of dopamine to the body something similar to the way sex and drugs would do lol . Blizzard had awesome songs and had touches of Randy's bridging of classical and metal but these songs on Diary of a Madman took it completely to a new level that was incredibly satisfying and addictive . I kno people say Randy wasn't the first to combine classical music with metal or hard rock but none of Richie Blackmore"s or Yngwie Malmsteen's music even remotely comes close to Randy's . It's like he invented this type and style of music (like a genre of it's own) single-handedly and I feel so disappointed and almost cheated that we (the world) wasn't fortunate enough to see and hear more from Randy. .I honestly believe had he lived longer he would have created some of the greatest music that is humanly possible with a guitar . I have always said that Randy was like the Mozart of modern day guitarists . a musical gift from GOD that was so ahead of it's time .we were so blessed to have witnessed what he created musicly . he was such a inspiration to all of us that could appreciate his music for how special it really is . Rhandy ( God bless him ) set the bar so high that no one can overcome . I really enjoy watching your reactions. You feel the music and the vocals. But you don't only focus on vocals, you take the entirety of a song into account. Thank you for your time and efforts on bringing attention to the many things that make music unique to those who are less perceptive. Songs and music have always called out to me. It's good to see others like you also appreciate ALL KINDS of music for what they are.
I hope you read this, Randy's talents and skills are fantastic and many of us recognize that, many people on TH-cam also do these reaction videos and they are amateurs, Randy is not and was not an amateur, you are so knowledgeable about what it is you do, the only person out there who could do the Late Great Randy Rhoads justice on what he brought to the table, just like you said, there are very few people who understand the workings of music and even fewer who can crank it out, you are the one who can expose Randy great talents, for Randys sake you should do everyone of his songs!

I really love hearing her count out time signatures... She always gets it right on the money.... Not only does she count it perfectly, but she also comes up with an incredible analysis - even if she’s never heard the track before. I just really dig what she’s doing here and support her 100% for sure. If you’ve yet to hear her sing or perform, you don’t know what you are missing... Please take a listen to her - she’s truly incredible. I actually just bought one of her t-shirts and I have to explain it everywhere!!! I love it. It's 7/4 though and not 7/8, but she was doing it on the fly and did get seven counts at least. The phrasing resolves perfect at 7/4.
@@grilledspaghetti I hear 4/4, 4/4, 2/4, 4/4, and then 12/8, 6/8 through the verses. The vocal lines definitely run 10 beats with another 4 beats behind. As for the drums, with 4/4 bars have the snare on 3 for the half-time feel, with that 2/4 bar in the middle. In 7/4, you have snare on 3, 7 and then 3, 6 with an extra beat. The drums aren't painting a 7/4 picture. Of course, that's just my opinion, it definitely has that Rush-style "odd signature that doesn't feel odd" until you try and count it.

More than once I saw you fall into the brilliance that is Diary. It what makes this such a beautifully composed piece of work. The more you listen, the more you like. It still gives me chills.
Shortly after my divorce from my first wife, I went through severe depression. Lost my job not that long after my divorce. I made the mistake of sitting in apartment playing this song on an endless loop playing it over and over for weeks... so many days of crying and thoughts of suicide. Thankfully I was able to get my head straight. I love this song but every time I hear it all those feelings of anguish and despair flood me.... I'm actually in tears at the moment. Lol

Scott funny you say that, I'm sitting here feeling the same way, only my wife's only been gone about 4 months. I don't know where she's at I've had no contact with her she took her car I'm getting kicked out of my apartment because she's not going to be here to sign the lease and she was only home for a year before she left the last time she's got mental issues bipolar etc and all that aside it doesn't make anything feel any worse.
I will never again let a woman emotionally drain me. Never brood over a woman and never let them gain control over you. I`ve had my women and plenty of them. I`ve got more important things to worry about than some damn woman who all they care about is their damn ex. They always come before any new man and will always be like that. A woman does not want a gentleman. They want a bad boy. So, toughen up and get what you can and leave it at that. Don`t chase them around. Let them chase you.
Only two albums with Ozzy before his unfortunate accident, and Randy still remains one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. Diary is probably my favorite Ozzy record too.

Man, 40 years later and this song gets me every time. I started playing guitar in 1982 because of Randy. I've played this song thousands of times more than Randy did himself and i get it close but not perfect. I even have a Sandoval Dot V.
One my favorite songs and albums! This blew my 11 yr old mind when it was released. Ozzy's work (solo and Sabbath) is moving to say the least. Always powerful and emotional, Randy's playing is unmatched, so sad we lost him so young!

I think this was one of the most relatable songs for gen x metal heads... the angst.. the anger.. the hate .. the rebellion.. we all felt.. the emotions we could not put to words or thoughts we could not describe... were captured in this dark masterpiece of emotions and psychosis.. this was a lifeline and something that helped us keep our heads above water with the insanity of what was going on with us in our heads... this was a gift from the gods.. written by those most did not know wrote.. sung by a man that was justifiably claimed as a mad man himself and performed by a guitarist that demons and angels envied and the rest of the band that can not be forgotten .. because the weave of the design is drawn together by them all... the madness.. the majesty.. the saviors of the unsung and those deemed undeserving and unclean and foul... dairy of a madman was a testament to the spirit of those that rose from all of this and shaped the world.. all hail the old gods.. the gods of the forbidden music... the gods of metal that birthed a legacy from this simple seed of music.. this single seed of madness.. this is Ozzy and Randy and company, perhaps at their best.. may the sonic gods never forget or forsake them and this glorious composition that can make anyone feel many things and cause one's emotions to run freely and unashamedly.. may the heavens wail and cry with delight that Randy has played many new songs we will never hear on this planet.. still yourself for one day the madman will join his friend and woe to the heavens and hells when he arrives.. who can fathom what melodies will abound then... peace and be well my friends... enjoy the relaxing melody of mayhem....
