  • The book explores the movie's key questions and themes, including how we can tell if we're dreaming or awake, how to make sense of a paradox, and whether or not inception is possible. It also gives new insights into the nature of free will, time, dreams, and the unconscious mind. In addition, it discusses different interpretations of the film, and whether or not philosophy can help shed light on which is the "right one,' and deepens your understanding of the movie's multi-layered plot and dream-infiltrating characters, including Dom Cobb, Arthur, Mal, Ariadne, Eames, Saito, and Yusuf.

    The film was so perfectly accurate to the dream experience: the experience of time, the challenge of maintaining a lucid dream and remaining calm, how volatile and frightening the subconscious is...the list goes on. It was marvelous!

    Inception is one of those exceptional movies that any unintended mistakes and bloopers by the film makers can be attributed to as intentional. Even the classic mistake of a boom-mike in the shot can be interpreted as something meaningful. I wish Nolan would have intentionally inserted common film production mistakes and sit back and watch people interpret the hell out of them.

    • @gregoryball4450
      @gregoryball4450 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually ALL film production mistakes, which means that the mistakes ARE the point, so... it's really a perfect film... unless, of course... it isn't....

    • @austinbaker8042
      @austinbaker8042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I dont like it. You can't call Nolan a genius for making a premise that would forgive any unintentional genius elements that happen like the boom mic or leaving it up to interpretation. I feel like that's not as impressive as having a clear goal and theme throughout the movie. Like what is Inception about? Don't live in a dream world come back to reality? Metaphorically that could be pretty deep but it's pretty unclear especially if it requires multiple watches of the movie.

    I think Nolan didn't plan out all of the things Kyle Johnson mentioned. You can look at every fine detail and eventually find a few things that seem coincidental.
    To me, the most important part of the movie isn't the hunt for whether the dream is real or not, but the fact that it doesn't matter anymore. It looks like reality, it feels like reality. That's what I think of when I see Cobb break eye contact with the top to run to his kids. It means he no longer cares if it's a dream or not - he just wants to be with his kids. Hailing a bit back to the Matrix, ignorance is bliss. That one guy that betrayed everybody and ratted out to the Agents... He felt that living a good life in the Matrix is better than facing a bad reality. And in a dream, the world can be 'perfect'.

      TBH, I think Nolan did think of all of all the things Kyle Johnson mentioned. That man is obsessed with structure; just look at any interview he does for his movies. He just understand how cinema is supposed to work, the things you do show is as important as the things you dont (e.g. the Joker in TDK).
      Its just that the endgame for the film is that, as you mentioned, it just doesnt matter if its a dream or not. Nolan just put enough evidence to support both argument :)

  • @Jamiefearon

    Descartes believed humanities totem is the existence of Self - 'I think therefore I am'
    If the Self exists then we are experiencing true reality, if not then we are dreaming or are a figment of someone else's dream.
    The great insight of Buddha is the realisation that the Self is an illusion. This insight, he describes, can be realised by everyone, and he provides the tools to achieve it - such as mindfulness,the 8 fold path etc.
    Many of us have experienced no-self through practices such as meditation, LCD :), prayer to name a few. Therefore, our totem is telling us we are indeed inside a dream.

    I love when he says the point of advertising is inception.

  • @michaeldecker4341
    @michaeldecker4341 9 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I just watched inception again with fresh eyes, and here are some thoughts.
    Life is a journey of many dimensions, a battle of many layers, within your own mind.
    Reality is subjective, its not where the spinner stops spinning, your ideal reality is the
    one you arrive at when you overcome the paradigms and programs that drag you down.
    This fight, or as in the movie, this 'seemingly improbable' flight, is the battle.
    The deeper you go and the more layers you peel off and stare down, the faster your progress time will go, as
    represented by the speed of time the more dreams then went within the dreams.
    Cobb's wife represented guilt. Guilt wrapped in a beautiful layer, with the strongest emotions attached like love,
    the shared creation of children, and the guilt that his wanting to control her contributed to her decision to end her life.
    And that's just one emotion, wrapped up in so many layers, seemingly impossible to break all combinations.
    But that's what we all have to face to then channel the supreme creative force into our lives. You don't have to
    overcome it all at once, but you have to surrender to this ultimate battle and start the war.
    Limbo is what happens when you give up in the middle of the battle. You get lost in whatever world you currently
    chose to die and slowly decay and who knows how long it will take to wake up.
    This movie is Cobb's limbo. He was lost, he had given up to the temptation of Guilt's wrath many times.
    When Cobb woke up on the plane that look on his face is, wow, I can't believe I made it and how much I
    went through to let that guilt go.
    The banishment of USA just meant Cobb wouldn't allow himself to go back because of guilt. Once the
    opportunity offered itself and he was ready for the challenge, he took it.
    I think what happens in this movie all happens on the flight and after the flight. I don't know if it's the same flight, but
    where Cobb wakes up is where the movie also started--even if it may not show that.
    The point is not that the movie inception was a dream, but that what we call reality is a dream, and therefore, probably
    a dream within a dream--multiplied by infinity.
    And since your life is most likely a dreamed existence, within a dreamed existence, that all you can do is use the tools
    and awareness that you do have to create the life you want. This means, first, confronting the inceptions that have
    infected your mind and ideas that have taken deep roots and facing and letting go of all those layers of things like
    guilt, remorse, unloving, etc. Whether they are attached to your parents, your childhood, your relationships, yourself, or a mixture
    of them all.

    • @chelsearocks777
      @chelsearocks777 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like your way of thinking man, did you make all those premises out of this movie or some books maybe? I also think that all that things that happen to us what we call life is all a dream. It's because we forget sometimes what we were doing before something else,or that we in some moments don't have control over anything. I don't know, but i like that theory,it makes me kinda satisfied

    The wider, and most important, issue that he misses is the significance of this movie for the audience's real lives.
    When the credits roll and the audience awakens from the dream of this film - any film - how can they know that they haven't awoken and walked out of the theatre, into another dream?
    That is the inception of Inception.
    Socrates: "...what evidence we could offer if we were asked whether in the present instance, at this moment, we are asleep and dreaming all our thoughts, or awake and talking to each other in real life." - Theaetetus (158b-c)

    I have criticized some inconsistencies in the film, and I do agree that the whole movie makes more sense if it's all a dream (like any movie with inconsistencies). I never considered it an option though because I trusted that the guidelines for determining reality were based on the spinning of the totem. Thanks for the perspective. However, I'm still sure the quick shots of them being 'old' weren't supposed to be taken literally at all, but were more symbolic for how much they 'aged'.

    this is the brilliance of Nolan as a director. he builds layers that extend all the way to the audience.
    inception is supposed to give you (the viewer) feelings of being in a dream for the multitude of reasons listed in the video and comments below.
    he did the same thing with the Prestige. the movie is a trick, and to quote Cutter "you want to be fooled." or you can go on believing that Tesla built a cloning machine (or that a caged bird disappears under a cloth, a fish bowl appears from nowhere, etc.) Nolan never shows the machine working, it's only on screen as Borden's interpretation of a story Angier is telling.
    same goes for Memento and how you feel confused and like you are forgetting what just happened (though you dont know until it happens, just the way he directs the film.)
    Nolan is pretty damn good. easily one of the best directors today

  • @Greglarr

    Johnson's theory rests on one aspect, which is troubling me. He states that when you commit suicide in limbo, you emerge one dream layer up. He cites the scene with Ariadne and Fischer jumping off the building when all if the kicks are about to go off. This isn't what happens though.
    Ariadne and Fischer never hit the ground. The point of them jumping is not to die, but to fall. They're creating a kick to wake themselves from the dream. This explains why they only go one layer up. When you have that falling sensation in a dream, you wake up to wherever you were having that dream. It is shown in the film that they both wake up before hitting the ground. There's even a remark that Ariadne makes about needing to create a kick and gravity being the only available tool.
    This nullifies the point that Cobb could be in Saido's dream at the end when he's with his kids, because that's not where he'd end up if they shot themselves in limbo.

    • @maddenstain
      @maddenstain 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      However, his claim isn’t that suicide/death leads to a one layer jump... but rather that any EXIT out of limbo (death or a kick being the cause) results in a one dream layer jump

    Thanks Kyle for wonderful analysis, but you had a question about how fisher and ariadne woke up one layer above after Limbo....Sir if u watch carefully, they didn't die in limbo, they just experienced free fall which lead to waking up in layer above(eame's dream) and Saito and cobb woke up in flight because they properly killed themselves in Limbo.......SO if u die in Limbo, you wake up in reality.....if u have free fall or tipping in limbo, u will wake up one layer above. Thats what ariadne says that we will give fisher kick in limbo

    • @zori2000
      @zori2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is actually a very cool idea that I hadn't thought about. Plus, it also explains how Cobb and Mal wake up in the real world because they died in Limbo, they didn't free fall. Very nice speculation.

      in the begining they didn't have strong sedative also they were in 2 dreams so its easy to kill and wake up. But when inception activity starts they used strong sedative so they have to sync kick from all layers to wake up. Remember when saito gets shot in 1st dream, eams was abt to kill him to wake him up in flight but Cobb stops him and yusuf explains that killing over here will lead to go in Limbo. So they can't shoot each other to wake up. Sync kick won't harm the Subconsious mind and it will b easy to wake up in Reality / :-) thats it

    I was also amazed that he did not mention the "Leap of Faith" key phrase that Mal, Saito and Cobb uses to each other throughout the film. In my opinion, Cobb performed self therapy on himself, projected everyone on the plane around him in his dreams that were different versions of his own psyche. And as he woke up in the end he had learned to let go of the radical notions.

  • @thatintroguy1
    @thatintroguy1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Why does he assume the dream level remains intact when everyone wakes? If the three dream levels collapse after everyone wakes, this leaves only two levels: Limbo (Cobb & Saito) and Reality (everyone else). When Saito kills himself he can't leave limbo while he is still sedated so he re-enters Limbo. The same happens to Cobb, but Limbo is now created from Saito's subconscious, including his being an old man. When the sedation finally wears off, Cobb and Saito leave Limbo and they go up one level to Reality.

    • @ericbriggs7383
      @ericbriggs7383 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      thatintroguy1 Good point. Each level is the contribution of someones consciousness, therefore if their consciousness exits that space there is no more space to fill. However I think the whole movie is a dream, therefore anything is possible and nothing is finite.

      None of US is experiencing the same "reality". That experience is always subjective. We can make certain agreements about "reality", for the sake of communication. but everyone's experience is completely unique. That's why no one's presence in the realm is superfluous, or unnecessary. Living life is about discovering what we uniquely have to offer... at least from this point of view. (Ultimately, "point-of-view" is unnecessary)

    • @snowyman321
      @snowyman321 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They all believe that killing yourself from limbo gets you back up to the top. That's why they jump, so they can get one level up and ensure that everyone is doing alright on that level.

    • @najdj1535
      @najdj1535 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      that jump was the kick
      so basically they did the kick to go one layer up, but they didn't kill themselves cause if they did they'll be lost in limbo

    • @doumielle
      @doumielle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Najd j omg right!Hes wrong they didn't kill themselves they simply jumped and it's the sensation of falling that becomes a kick so they woke up before the impact.Cobb and Saito killed themselves so they went to the top instead.

    I did not understand the "one layer up part".
    When Ariadne exits Limbo she goes one layer up. Then after leaving that layer she goes to the layer in which the van hits the water. Since now both Fischer(the dreamer of the snow fortress dream) and Ariadne(the architect of all the dreams and hence the fortress too) have left that dream, why would the snow fortress still be in existence?
    As much I remember you need the machine for shared dreaming which is not there in Limbo. So how would Cobb and Saito create the snow fortress dream when they kill themselves in Limbo? So this one layer up concept doesn't work if there is no dream one layer above.
    Programmers would like to call it the "Null Reference Exception". XD

      +alv4ro It wasn't intended to be ABOUT philosophy. It's about Inception. He USES philosophy to help explain it. Philosophy is more of a method than a set subject (hence philosophy OF this or that).
      The bread and butter of philosophy is that it provides an analysis of the subject matter, uses valid reasoning, and forms a conclusion in order to derive its (potential) meaning. And if "explaining mini clues as to why the whole thing is a dream" isn't another way of saying just that, then what does it mean?

    I remember seeing somewhere that Cobbs Totem was actually his wedding ring. He only wore it in dreams where Mal was still “alive”. Still he could possibly be in his own dream because based on the video, a totem doesn’t tell if you’re dreaming.
