former vs8100 owner here, this is dead on. I'm pretty sure I need a martyr now. The only thing I see missing is the tone shift button which is why it needs a boost.
Me being a little nerd here; the 8100 didn't have the tone shift button, that was the newer VS100 model. 🤓
I fucking love this thing. This in combination with either my Crate or my VH-140 clone basically gave me the guitar tone I grew up desiring. There's other stuff I've rotated in (mostly when I need to double track) but that combination nailed what I was after the whole time.
Zao - Where Blood And Fire Bring Rest and Liberate Te Ex Inferis are almost all Valvestate 8100 tones and CRUSHED for late-90’s metalcore. I believe Living Sacrifice Reborn was also 8100, basically Barry Poynter used it as his go to for almost every heavy band that came through in that era. I love that back then we couldn’t just pull up a Mesa Rectifier plugin for killer tones, and if we didn’t have the money for the expensive amps we had to find low cost alternatives and that’s why the 8100 sits proudly on so many heavy tracks from the era. I dunno, I just love that amp lol.
I thought living sacrifice was 5150.
Zao always crushed it. Spot on too on the prevalence of solid state amps in hardcore, because hardcore and punk kids didn't always have money. Sure, I saw plenty of Dual Recs and JCMs from bigger acts, but I also remember tons or Randall and Crate rigs...and they sounded just fine to my ears.
Hey Kyle, I have come to a conclusion that if I was a touring musician I would definitely want you to be my tech. You can pretty much get most pre-amps, overdrives, tube amps, etc... to sound kick ass! Your knowledge and understanding of these devices is awesome, and you have some good "ears", which is probably where it all begins. Thank you for the content you put out...and there's a lot.

man i had a 8100 back in 2000 and it broke on me. when you play it actually sounds like it to me, i might have to buy one of these. i might not play it all the time, but i think it would be worth having. you make it sound really really good with a boost. good video!
Still have my 8200, the (wait for it....) 200 watt stereo chorus version. Unfortunately, it sits in storage because I don't have room for a half stack these days. Oh well, maybe one day...
Two things: 1. One of my favorite guitar tones of all time, Twisted By Design by Strung Out was a 5150 and a Marshall Valve State. So not JUST death metal. 2. Master Effects is awesome. Tim's customer service is incredible and he got a pedal to me immediately after his bout with COVID. I really like my EQFH for doing the Gary Holt cocked wah parametric EQ thing.
That 5150+8100 combination shows up on a few great albums.
I had the valvestate half stack when they first came out. The matching 4x12 was a little smaller but they sounded good together. I remember playing a show and the guitarist from my friends punk band wanted to use it. He kept bitching that it sounded "too metal". I loved it but I ended up selling it. A few years later I bought a valvestate combo and really couldn't bond with it. Marshall should reissue these(after fixing the reliability issues)
Sounds just like it! My only problem is that they made the OD1/2 be nestled in there on a little toggle switch. Think it would be better as a second footswitch at the bottom so you can change between light/heavy sounds throughout a song

Current Valvestate 8240 owner. This pedal is close, especially for the 8100 head. Now for the Valvestate combo amp owners like myself (I've had mine since 1997), it's not gonna be the same. The early combos came with on-board reverb and chorus as well as a Celestion special designed speaker and open back. The chorus had 2 knobs: depth and rate. With the chorus switched on, the amp magically grew balls and got a HUGE sound. If you zero the Rate knob which eliminates the vibrato part of the chorus effect leaving the depth knob at noon or higher, this amp is a loud, tight and focused fire breathing 90's death metal behemoth that no others can compare to.
tbe 8240 isnt the same tone circuit as the 8100 and 8080 they had more gain
I had one of these. It was my first Marshall.The Vavestate 8100 seems to be massively over-rated nowadays though. Don't get me wrong, I was stoked to have it. It was very cool to have a Marshall amp. And a little while later I got a 1960A cabinet. That's right, the JCM900 cab, not the Valvestate one. That was a wise decision. It was a cool sounding combination. A little gruntier with the bigger dimension cabinet.
However, it still wasn't quite that tube sound. I liked the JCM 900 master volume, but felt that it didn't have quite enough gain (although I would probably think differently now). Back in those days, when playing metal you wanted it all from the amp, putting pedals in front of it tended to be seen as a cop-out.
I tried a 5150 while on tour once. Didn't like it, which I am sure now was because it was through the 5150 cab with the Sheffields. . However, one day I got a chance to try one with a Marshall 1960 and that was like WOW! I traded in the Valvestate and got the 5150, along with a 1960B cab to have a full stack and never looked back, never regretted that. Sure, the 8100 is now in demand and a bit of a collectors item, but then so are the older 5150s.
People make much ado of the contour knob on the 8100, "how versatile it is" I'm not that convinced, I tended to find there was only one position that it sounded good at to me. Maybe others have the same experience, but for them it's in at a different setting?
That sound you're getting doesn't truly sound like an 8100. It sounds better! Probably because you're going through the tube power stage of your 5150. What people seem to misunderstand about the Valvestate series of amps was that it called that mainly due to the was the way they built the power stage to try and emulate the reaction of the speaker with a tube power amp.
It wasn't really about the pre-amp, and the ECC83 tube they threw in there was mainly for marketing. Of course it was actually part of the circuit, but it was mainly in there so that "simpler" people could understand the Valvestate as being both tube and soild state. Like that other band in our town, which had a guitarist who had a rich daddy. Who promptly swapped their 900s for Valvestates once they finally heard that Chuck Schuldiner used one. Mine was long gone by then!

As fragile as the 8100 Valvestate was, it was a killer amp for gigging, recording and noodling around. It sounded killer, was lightweight, and could be had for cheap back in the day. Thanks for the killer demo Kyle. Looks like I need to add a Martyr to my pedal collection. Keep up the great work.
I’m sure it’s a bit different but I used to own and gig with a VS100 head and 1960A and it was such an awesome amp. Sold it when I was in a rough spot but I’d definitely pick up another.
The pre-amp section are almost the same thing.
The 8100 pre has a few more built in options for fine tuning but nothing you aren't better of using a pedal for anyways.

Master Effects rocks. I have the Tony Iommi style Laney preamp pedal and it’s absolutely killer.
In my experience with 5150/6505 amps I'd say that, at least on mine, the tone controls on the amp still affect the tone. I noticed this when got my POD Go and started running it through the loop. So what I did was turn every know down to zero except presence and volume. That could be why it sounded better through the solid-state powerstage.

From what I can hear this pedal sounds pretty comparable to the real deal.
I bought a broken VS for 40 dollars and converted it into a pre-amp. Its outrageous how good it sounds when mixed with the the right speakers/power section.
The 8100 has a tube active on the dirty channel FYI. I turned Lasse from Illdisposed on to these amps, among other from the Metal community in the early 90's. Sold a lot of JCM 800's too, and a lot of the SS lead 100 heads ;-)

I’ve always wanted the 8100 but I also know that buying any used amps means having to get them serviced and I have enough amps already so i may actually get one of these for those 8100 needs and save hundreds

I have 2 VS model 8100s from England and this pedal albeit sounds good, does not sound like the 8100. It is a close representation at best but I am NOT saying it sounds bad. It sounds amazing as it is. Like someone mentioned previous that the right cab and setting make the 8100 a monster. I tried sending the preamp from the 8100 head to a Marshall tube power section and compared it to the stock solid state amp. It sounds tighter and better through its own solid state amp. I think that is another key to some of its tone. I then ran the output from my Two Notes Torpedo Reload into my Axefx 3 for solid state amp and cab sims with FX and it BLEW my mind. Now when I play I use the single 12 Celestion cab AND run through the axefx 3 through FRFR blended and it is the perfect tone. I can floorboard adjust any of the FX and mess with the dry blending to get any sound I need. I love my vs 8100. I might get this pedal for it's difference in tone and blend the two also.

Voicings are similar, but the amp definitely has more gain
I just bought a 5150iii 6L6 to blend with my Marshall JCM2000 and i bet it would sound pretty similar if you blended with this instead

doesnt have as much gain nor does it have the( tube) sound of the 8100 the tube preamp is what nakes it sound so great

I have some questions for a seasoned player like yourself all about speakers for a 2x12 but first - I Stumbled on your videos not too long ago first you're talking my language right here- I love to rock like the next guy not so much metal thrash etc but George lynch , Warren Demartini Steve stevens and EVH of course are always what i go back to so picture late 70s early 80s hard rock side of things more!

I do have a fryette PS100 to keep the noise floor down to reasonable levels however I was debating between a few, I don't like mixing speakers I've tried it a few times now and it just doesn't work im hoping for 2 of the same speaker

My highest watt amp head is 50 watt plexi 1987 - maybe ill get a 100 watt head down the road but 50 watt plexi and jcm800 2204 plus a friedman runt 20 is what I fly with.

Lastly , everyone loves *scumbacks* and raves about them but here in Canada to order them from the US costs a killer just for 2 its over $500. I hear they're worth the price of admission, sure , but id theres another alternative set of speakers x2 that are hopefully 25 to 30 watts each so that it matches my 50 watt head power level or goes over 50 watts combined then that is good to.

I have a VS100 and it sounds pretty damn close to that, all the knobs seem like they react identically. People can whine about clone pedals all day long but I’m a sucker for clones of essentially dead technology. Nobody is going to make another amp similar to the 8100/VS100 amps ever again so being able to “be original” by filling a specific niche is pretty dope.

I still have mine with its 4x12 cab. Last time i checked it was still working but for me the amount of gain you have on this pedal doesn't match even the channel 2. There's to much gain on this pedal.
I'll try to plug it next week but I don't remember that much gain.
Had a VS100 a 100000 metal years ago. Sounded great. But, they came with matching cabinets. Not that great. Trick was to use it with a normal 1960 Marshall cab, and that thing came alive. That cab could take the high gain and move the air around it as well. The combo versions were great too. The 2x12 ones. Only had ground issues with Valvestates, which was in the genes of the design after years of playing.... The US made (I think) B52 solid state head. was a direct copy of the VS100, but not as good. Same amount of gain. But the EQ way off.....

to get to the meat & potatoes, 4:00 ...for thiose that wanna cut to the chase & find out what They came here for, just saving them a little wait time, unless ofcoasre they want to chill and learn about other gear etc. just bought the V3m all tube. Not getting much lows from it and i9t isnt really all that loud for 50 watts. My 6505mh was 20 watts & sounded louder imo. why does the V3m NOT sound like 50 watts. anybody wanna take a stab at it? sounds more like 20 watts to me
Loudness isn't entirely determined by a amp's wattage.
Among other factors are the sensitivity of the speaker, as well as how the amp's gain stages work. Voicing can play a role as well.
Some speakers are more sensitive than others, a 3dB difference in rating is the same as doubling the power of the amp. Not all companies rate things the same way either, just to complicate things. Speakers also have different voicings, which can impact things if they emphasis mid-range vs. compressing it.
I don't have enough of a technical understanding to explain how amp design plays a role, but my understanding is that it relates to how much a circuit is able to boost vs. distort and that designing a circuit to saturate earlier decreases headroom to actually boost, but anyone with a greater depth of knowledge can help explain how poor my understanding is.😅
It might make a difference between whether it's in the preamp or power amp, because high gain amps tend to not want much distortion occurring in the power amp since that makes your low end get flubby.
Lower wattage tends to impact bass frequencies more than the higher end of the spectrum. That's why bass amps have such high ratings, it takes more energy to reproduce lower frequencies.
Voicing can play a role because our ears are more sensitive to some portions of the sonic spectrum than others. Emphasizing high-mids tends to increase perceived volume. In general the range human speech occurs in is where our ears are most sensitive. If one amp is voiced more focused towards mids than the other, that can play a role.
Also, for whatever it's worth every piece of Peavey gear I've played has been loud AF. Their solid-state amps often seemed as loud as similarly rated tube amps into similarly rated speakers, 5150/6505s, VTMs, etc are loud too from what I've seen.
SELF CORRECTION HERE .... upon getting even more familiar with the V3m ... I just realized, it has 4 volumes. .... I was only using each channels volume. only .... THEN I saw the Master was on 3-4 I just ran it up to around 6 Jeeezuschiste this fkn thing is LOUD!! NO issue keeping uip wiith a live banhd, at all. whatsoever.

@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 basiccaly it has 4 volume knobs. 1 on each channel and far left a master volume. i literally thought i wouod blow these 2 hunfred watt 12s, and i pushed up up to around 6 and they didnt blow and i knew the amp would easily be loud enough and still retain good tone, very very loud.
