    I bought this amp used for only 200$ in emergency for a live show. Now it's my only amp and i don't think i'll change it soon, i play 7 strings in G standard and drop F getting absolutely filthy tones. This "old" amp absolutely still rules in 2023, i find it perfect to play "modern" really low tuned music. Recently i started to boost it with a boss HM-2 and it's a match made in heaven, but that's another story...

    Sick tones. I love the percussive "CHK" you can hear when you dig into the low notes. It makes it feel dynamic with the top end but smooth consistent lows and mid range.

    For a long time the Human tone rumor was that it was a Ampeg VH140c. Then the rumor was that it was a Randall. The rumors were eventually dispelled and if I recall correctly, it turned out it was Morrisound's in-house JCM 800, which Scott Burns seems to have loved, given his output at the time. When you listen to it, it actually makes sense. It's a classic JCM tone, it's just the way they handled the sum of those parts that gives it it's special novel mojo.
    1) that it's quad tracked very cleanly, 2) the specific mojo of the mixing board, 3) that they used two slightly different tones per side (one is much brighter, possibly just the mixing board EQ though) and of course, as SMG Glenn will tell you, 4) whatever magic speaker/mic positioning they dialed in. As cool as the Valvestate is, I believe Human was recorded before it even existed, and the Valvestate delivers a noticeably different style of transient.
    But don't quote me on any of this. My brain and memory has become like a neglected swampy green swimming pool.

    The tone you got on your "The Bleeding" recreation is absolutely sick.
    The Death tones are the most spot-on you've ever done. I guess that's what happens when it's such a simple rig.

    I know “pickups don’t matter anymore” , but I tried to get the symbolic tone with the plug-in version with a guitar with Dimebucker pickups. It was better than my other guitars with other pickups, but then I got the x2n. It was like, there it is, that pickup has some extreme eq config on it and makes a big part of that sound in my opinion.

    • @gabrielhersey-sanders3768
      @gabrielhersey-sanders3768 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I thought the same thing. I had the X2N in a number of guitars for years, and I truly believe it’s an integral part in getting close to Chuck’s tone. The X2N is such an underrated/misunderstood pickup.

    • @jfo3000
      @jfo3000 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As far as I know, only Glenn is pushing "pickups don't matter anymore". He is just getting into being decent on metal rhythm guitar, not a lead player yet. Feel and how the pickup drives the rest of the rig are also important to the player, not just "how the pups sound in a mix."
      He's an engineer before player. Have to always consider that with his opinions.

    YEEEEEESSSSS!!!!
    The more i hear these amps, the more i know i gotta get one before the prices shoot up.
    On the topic of the Static X tone, Firstly, fantastic job. All of today's tones sounded fantastic, but these ones brought a smile to my face. Secondly, I bought a mix lessons from Pro Mix Academy, Specifically, Ulrich Wild mixing Hollow. He mentioned in there "...One thing i did try to do was to use the actual Static X amp that we used, the actual valvestate, that we used for the *first* album...". This, among other comments he makes throughout the lesson, suggest that while the valvestate might have been used on Machine and later albums, it likely wasn't used on every song of a given album. Same goes for the MGs. If they were plugged in and mic'd up, it's possible and very much likely that's what they used, but if Tripp's or Koichi's rigs sounded better, they might have used that. As for how they would have gotten a good metal tone from MGs, well Ulrich is a "Tone is in the right hand" guy, so i guess the only people that get great tones from MGs are Wayne Static and Dave Simpson. I know how you certainly DON'T get a good metal tone from MGs and that's whatever happened during Cult of Static.
    Fun fact, albeit an off topic one, the guitars on Project Regeneration Vol. 1 were DIs going through Waves PRS Archon, Fortin Nameless, Fortin NTS, and a Line 6 Helix using the Angel Meteor sim depending on the song for both Koichi and Xer0.

    In Flames used the 8100 for The Jester Race from 1996 and probably also for Whoracle. For the Jester Race the 8100 was boosted, maybe with a Super Overdrive or a Metal Zone. And they cut the 400 Hz region quite significantly.

    i am use WGS green beret, ET90, and Reaper HP50. Jensen 10" Falcon 40. Jensen Nighthawk 75. With a VH140, a biyang metal end KING in the FX Loop. Noise gateS. plural S. And effects. An 8 string tuned to B. An RG 550 tuned to C. Pikcups are Bareknuckle aftermath 8. i was seriously considering the D Activator X for the RG550 because it is smoother in the mids doesn't clunk as much as the X2N. I am do not use 'Post EQ'. Mics are limited to few. Austrian Audio OD 505 it sounds like a shelved chorus like sound. Then the Telefunkin M80. Beyer Dynamic M160. Now just need to learn how to play. Then record the album.

    I wonder how good this amp would sound with a pickup like a Lace Deathbucker in the bridge of a guitar to try and get a super tight, precise sound going straight into a solid state amplifier.
    Solid state amps tend to always sound better with some kind of rail style passive pickup, even when you boost the amp with some boost pedal like a Boss SD-1, Tube Screamer, TC Electronics Spark booster solid state amps even tend to sound better compared to using a pole piece pickup configuration going straight in, and I feel like the reason why that is is because you have a single piece of metal picking up the signal of the strings, which is absolutely vital for maintaining a consistent and tight tone especially going straight into an amp.

    8 years ago, I bought my 8080 for only 80€. It came with an excellent (for metal) UK Celestion G12K-100 speaker, which alone is worth that 80€, so I basically got the amp part for free. I converted mine to a head, so now it's practically a 8100. I'm pretty sure that these will go up in value. I would recommend hunting down the combos (8080), as they are less rare, thus cheaper, and have that great Celestion in them. Nice versatile amp, but these truly shine on making the most vicious and hateful old school metal sound.

    Cool, video, great see you again!!
    One question, It's possible to compare that with Fractal Ax8/FM3 for example, or how to get sound similiar in this kind of amp modeling?
    Thanks man!!

      8200 actually, which is the stereo chorus equipped model! It's (nearly) the same preamp design though.

    I am very surprised that all sonds include an treble control beyond noon. With my Valvestate 8080 I move between 9 and 12 o'clock otherwise it gets much too shrill.

    @Plague Scythe Studios I have an 8 string Agile... unfortunatley no one i know plays an 8 string so I don't have anyone to show me how to tune or use it properly. Basically i'm using the bottom six strings as a regular guitar, then playing some bass notes on the top two strings... so basically just kinda mucking around. Wondering if I can use a 7 string or 8 string to play Breaking Benjamin type songs instead of downtuning a regular 6 string to drop C... or if there's any good tutorials on how to use an 8 string properly.

    • @jeremy888ferris7
      @jeremy888ferris7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @unknown enemy thanks! Would you incorporate those F# and B strings along with the E and A strings to play some form of power chords, or do you pick them individually more? Can 7 and 8 string guitars be used to play low songs in lieu of downtuning a regular guitar to drop C etc, or are they pretty much their own animal? I want to learn to play my 8 string, AND I want to play drop C, drop Bb songs (like breaking Benjamin and starset and skillet) just not sure if I I should be combining the two
