I owned this camera back in 2001 and used it for photographing London night life and night club scene. I loved this little camera and it did me really well, the photos were often noisey from shooting in low light but that didnt matter as I could upload them to the web gallery the next day. I wish I still had this camera as a memory of my first digital camera.
Thanks for sharing that piece of personal digicam history! It must have been amazing to capture London nightlife back in the early digital camera days, even with the noisy photos. Feeling so groundbreaking at the time, I can totally understand why you'd want to keep it as a memory. Have you kept the images in your archive?
Among all your cameras, if you could only keep one, which one would you choose? Which one do you think is more special? I am currently talking about classic digital cameras, a Canon G2, a Canon S70, a Sony DSC S75, a Fujifilm F30FD and a Konica G530 😉
Of the ones I've tested so far in the episodes I think it would be the Fuji Finepix F11, closely followed by this Sony S85. 😁 You mean you have those cameras or are you just making comparison? 🤔 I have the G2 by the way...will be tested eventuall, really love those early Powershot Gs.
Thank you very much for your answer and also for sharing your experiences. I have those cameras that I have listed. What I am looking for with these cameras is to exploit their limitations, to allow me through their interpretations, to explore "other realities". The Fuji F30FD was a very well known camera in its time, especially for its low noise at high isos, however, I prefer the noise rather than the reduction, which produces a watercolour effect that does not convince me. Greetings from the Mediterranean coast 😊
@@71bravo Yeah the noise can make it more film-like, which is a desirable look indeed. I like your description of exploring "other realities", seems like a good phrase to use in connection to these digicams of yesteryear. Enjoy your cool collection of classics! 😁 Ps. I have the successor (?) to your Konica G530, the G600, which I like.
Hi @@ccderik..I started buying these small cameras several years ago, before this digicam "fever" started, and they were cheaper than they are now. I like the Konica G530 very much aesthetically and it is also very small and very well finished. I'll keep watching your videos...Cheers.
Cool! I see they share some key features like the sweet lens, the big mic...also the disturbing "6x precision digital zoom" inscription 😁. The S85 is definitely top-2 of the old compacts I've tested so far.
Love that i found a channel focusing on directly ccd/cmos sensor/digicams because most of the bigger youtubers just kinda went with the fad and then went on while im still like GIMMIE GIMMIE MORE. I love digicams especially my kodak z760 with its color science chip that makes colors just POP!
@@ccderik thanks for the response! Yeah I was looking around a bit and it seems that even with an adapter they won’t work because the camera only takes up to 128MB hahah. Thanks for the video though I managed to find one for 25 euros second hand, coming tomorrow! 😄
It was $800 on release...I think it equals 1400 in today's currency. 34mm and not 35 is cool at the wide end 😁. Actually the Canon Powershot G1 and G2 have the same exact focal length.
looks quite alike my epson, got same 7-21, f/2.0-2.5, same looking lens and buttons too. I think picture is too good for 2001 year, so now it looks just fine, like photos from mid priced phone. Cheap kodaks from 2005 with 1/2,5" gives more vintage looking photos
Is it the PhotoPC 3000Z? Yeah it has a quality lens but wouldn't say "too good", hehe. I like how the images are rendered when slightly overexposing, creating a warm bleached out look. That's when I feel it has a unique retro tone. I've tested one of those Kodaks, the C530, fun and simple camera with those warm Kodak colors. Comes recommended. 😁
@@ccderik yes, 3000z. I'll try it again when on the streets will be more than 50 shades of gray. And also I've pretty amazed with nikon d80 + 35mm nikkor, vivid + iso 800 does really vintage-styled nice photos, high iso for my taste looks like film grain. So I quite recommend to try it.
one of my favorite digicams! glad to see someone review it
Understandably a favorite! 😎
No CMOS or CCD sensor was harmed during the filming of this documentary. Thank you, Erik. Keep up the good videos.
Hehe! 😄All CMOS and CCD sensors are safe and sound. Glad you're enjoying the videos, will try to keep on keeping up. 😁
This was my first ever camera, I loved it a lot. Sadly I got rid of it when I moved over to DSLRs. Wish I still had it, just for the memories
Cool to hear! I haven't kept my first digital compact either (the Canon Powershot A80)...I switched to a Canon 400D. 🙂
Excellent take on this classic camera 👍🏼
Thank ye! 🤠

Cool camera! Thanks for your videos!
It's up there among the coolest I've tested so far. 😎
I have the S70, about one year older, fantastic camera, one of my favorites! The S85 seems very similar, but with much improved buttons.

Excelente fotos! Tenho essa camera! Parabéns!!

Swell! Your comments keep me inspired. 📸...and once you color pop you can't stop. 😉
Possible variant night photo Sony DSC S85 . US manual max iso light expo time
CCD sensor good time . Good full wide lens. Testing night photo Astrology star
We just got one it is very good
Cool choice!
This looks awesome! Is this the same memory card that used to go into the psp?
While they both use Memorystick, the PSP seems to use a version called "pro duo", so I don't believe it's the same...

Quite good parameters for 2001, even manual control. Hmmm.. that must have been expensive as hell :D
34-102mm is also rather wide for that era.

memory stick is deal breaker :(
Well, those sticks don't grow on trees these days...😁🥲 Sony had to be special.
