As you were telling the story, taking about the “kiosk lady”, I got the feeling that her telling them to camp far away from the kiosk, was more to protect the campers from her husband, who obviously drank a lot… She was trying to protect them.

No shade to you Mr.Ballen- you’re the BEST. I just want to share something… I’ve been a therapist for 16 years and I have heard many horror stories and awful experiences that people have had with Better Help. I’ve heard of therapists doing extremely unethical things, making judgmental comments, shaming clients, no showing for appointments, breaking boundaries etc. I’m hopeful that as you become even more popular (because you deserve all the success) that you’ll be able to let this sponsor go.
Yeah I was gonna say I'm glad he was encouraging people to seek therapy when needed, but BetterHelp has scammed people and have some crappy people working for it
He has nearly 9 million subscribers, and millions of views per video. He's plenty successful and makes very good money through ad revenue. There's no excuse.
It’s a online therapy service literally what do you expect!? That’s kinda like responding to the Nigerian price money scam email. Crazy how many of y’all fall for everything.
A few years back, I suffered a major brain injury that put me in a wheelchair and possibly disabled me for life. I found MrBallen by chance, and your storytelling has given me a chance to experience life from another perspective. The detail you use in each story puts me there in my mind. It keeps my mind active and away from disparity. It shocks me that you haven't been approached to host and/or own your own mystery series. You're totally the present day "Unsolved Mysteries". I'm proud that you found a life away from the teams. Thank you for all you've given this country.
I discovered Mr. Ballen by chance as well, just over 2 yrs ago... watching/listening to his story telling gets me out of my head & pulls me further from my severe depression and crippling anxiety... I wholeheartedly wish the best for you. You're a complete stranger but your story hit me in a different way than most. I swear I'm not crazy!!
I like that too. When u hear your home country , or city , there were a few stories he had which happened in Chicago!! And I'm like hey my home town ... 😂😂😂
When he said there were a lot of people calling in because so many Finnish guys looked like the police sketch, I couldn't help but think... they probably don't have a very diverse gene pool over there, do they
I remember when i found Mr.Ballen under 100K, thinking, How all the way down to the body language you use to describe these stories, that you just didn’t have enough support.. Seeing you now at 8.81 MILLION is heart stopping and i can say for sure MR BALLEN deserves it. Thank you for the amazing stories man they’re still keeping me to this day!
John is one guy on the internet who truly deserves all the success that has came to him, a truly likable guy and American hero , just the 2-3 years I’ve been watching him his channel has grown so much and I’m not surprised at all.
He's kind of a jerk, hasn't replied or paid me the 50 bucks that I got scammed by someone impersonating his merch. I've commented it and dm him even put my cashapp out there and he just deletes the comment and ignores the message. Even though I've shown him proof

CLASSIC BALLEN. I’ve watched every single one of your videos but this one reminded me of the early days. Dark, vicious, pulls you in multiple directions. The older stories, especially with grainy black and white photos or black and white artistic depictions make it so much more creepy and bewildering because there weren’t security cameras or cell phones ANYWHERE. It was so much harder to get caught back then and I believe that is what makes that time frame more frightening and unfathomable. I know it’s gotta be harder to find/create content after HUNDREDS of stories told, but this one is an all time great.
Yes, the strange, dark and mysterious more and more changed into horrible murder stories. Of course, the material that is strange n especially mysterious is far less and so that material was quickly used, especially 3y ago when it was “we upload 3,4 sometimes even 5x/week”. And horrible murders are often very depressing compared to things that haven’t been solved to this day, because they seem out of this world.
Probably saver to go somewhere where something has already happened instead of going to a fresh spot. For me it‘s like a lighting doesn’t strike twice 😂
I'm from Finland and this is the most creepy murder case ever in my country and is still being talked about a lot to this day! I have visited the site where this happened and it's a very beautiful place in the summer. Thank you for covering this case, you one of my favourite TH-camr and an a very talented storyteller!❤
I just saw another video a couple of weeks ago by chance about an event that happened 20 years before this where Soviet troops that had invaded Finland in what was called "The Winter War" November 1939 were massacred in the middle of the night while sleeping in their tents, deep within the forests oh Finland. They were found similar to the poor kids in this story, beaten and slashed into a bloody mess with no explanation as to who or what had done it. Thorough investigations revealed it wasn't Finish troops or peoples. The only explanation was from eye witness accounts of shadowy figures in the night with glowing eyes. Have you heard of this at all???
I knew which story was the moment I heard "Finland" and "Lake", but told by Mr. Ballen is like listening to a whole new story with all the added details and top notch narrative.
I'm so glad Nils was acquitted. I got the impression that the investigators were trying to be Sherlock Holmes and he made a satisfying target because he was the only person involved who was still alive.
It was ridiculous that anyone would even suspect him. Who would or could beat themselves to the degree of injuries he sustained? Most likely his shoes were outside the tent and the killer liked them. Took them and while running away realized he didn't want to be caught with them so they stashed them and get them later.
Another thing to it is, how the hell did nils do all of that, walk over 500m away, then back, and then do the injuries he had to himself? Are Finnish police really that incompetent?
Yeah. And the other thing I was thinking was the keys to the motor cycles. If they were removed and never found it might have been an outsider that didn't want any of the kids to hop on a bike and escape during the attack. I doubt that one of the boys would prepare like that if they would kill their friends in an argument or out of sudden anger. I bet the keyes could be found in the lake or somewhere around the area if someone looked with a metal detector.
@@theblondeone7771 Disagree. The wife alibied him. She was as incensed as Karl about campers at the lake. *Theory* her constant berating, telling him he needs to do something….. so he gets drunk….. topped off with his already known disposition commits the murders.

Depression is exactly how you explained it! No one expects it to happen to them. Until one is in the dark pit. Thank you for sharing your story and sharing your gift of storytelling!
It is hard for me to believe anyone could bludgeon themself to the point Nils was beaten. Seems ridiculous people would ever have thought that…disgusting.

Children Of Bodom! R.I.P. Alexi Laiho I love that you did the Lake Bodom story. For anyone who doesn’t know, there was a phenomenal Finish Metal band named after this tragedy, unfortunately their extremely talented lead guitarist and singer died in 2020 due to lifelong alcohol abuse. I would invite everyone to check out their music. They actually have a signature song called “Lake Bodom” with a very iconic guitar riff. It might be a bit too metal for some though, another great one would be “Living Dead Beat” or “needled 24/7”. Those are a bit more “commercial”. They also created a very popular metal cover of Brittany Spears “Oops…I did it again” that actually turned it into a great metal song.
@@Tobez yeah man. quick story: I met them all in person after a show at the Best Buy Theatre in NY, after me and a buddy followed them to a bar. It wasn’t all self inflicted, apparently they were fighting and he won the fight then killed them all, well I’m not really saying he did it but you had missed the point were they were fighting so that’s how he got all that
@@oniekurira6588 Nils also apparently exaggerates his injuries. They were less severe blows than to others, and apparently more consistent with fist blows or kicks. He also didnt have skull fracture, but fractures to the jaw, and face. He also claims to have so severe brain injury he got complete amnesia which wouldnt be consistent with his head injuries. So there actually was good reason why he was suspect. As someone who lives in an area that gets white nights, they're great, but the downside is we only get a couple of hours of light in the winter. It's basically already dark by 3PM. So you get up for work in the morning and it's dark, and when you leave work - it's also been dark for a while now. It can get real depressing. Great video. I always appreciate people talking about the Lake Bodom murders. That case deserves more recognition. I absolutely love, how respectful and well researched your case presentations are. There is just one thing, that gave me pause. Nils wasn't Maila's (real/official) boyfriend. Her actual boyfriend, Pauli Pirinen, was on home vacation from the military for her birthday (she knew about him coming back) and found out Maila was on a trip with another guy. He was among the initial suspects, but ruled out as he spent the night with another friend getting drunk due to frustration and heartbreak that Maila didn't meet him as promised and instead cheated on him with Nils. Honestly, I believe that the killer of the three teenagers is Hans Assmann. He was connected to various other crimes with the same M.O. Girls killed, some with their underwears stripped off, as if they were SA'ed, but actually weren't. Former Nazi. And he looks a lot like the suspect sketches that were made with the help of Nils. How would Nils have known Assmann if not because he was attacked by the man. Also, Assmann was spotted and photographed at the funeral, though the police didn't yet know his identity at that point. Also, his girlfriend took back Assmann's alibi after the guy died. Not so rock solid...
I’m glad you brought up the alibi. I always find it odd when people say ‘rock solid alibi’ when referring to closed trusted people who would lie for their partner, friend or family member. Rock solid should only be some kind of surveillance.
@@gregbearne2195 Especially, because she admitted to being absolutely afraid of her husband. Also, the Kiosk owner's alibi was literally also given by his wife, who later rescinded it. So twice in this case, the police just took the spouses word and accepted it as truth. Not to mention that the doctor who treated Assmann in the hospital said, that he had blood all over himself, that was definitely not his own. The doctor and an independent investigator / journalist published a book going over how Assmann was most likely the culprit. And only after that book was released did the police arrest Nils. As if to say "No, you're wrong, we know better." Like... WHAT?!

Trees are things and creatures that remain invisible to the human eye unless that person has what’s called “spiritual sight.” These people are able to SEE the paranormal, strange and supernatural that lives amongst. Came here to say this
No shade to you Mr.Ballen- you’re the BEST.
Yeah I was gonna say I'm glad he was encouraging people to seek therapy when needed, but BetterHelp has scammed people and have some crappy people working for it
not just that but they're not HIPAA compliant and they were sued for giving information about patients to social media companies.

Planning a camping trip now includes reviewing the MrBallen stories to make sure the campsite you chose is not in one of his stories.

I knew which story was the moment I heard "Finland" and "Lake", but told by Mr. Ballen is like listening to a whole new story with all the added details and top notch narrative.
And they are accurate too
I think he probably makes up a lot of details just to make for a better story....
Not really. If you look up the case details he’s pretty much 100% accurate
I'm so glad Nils was acquitted. I got the impression that the investigators were trying to be Sherlock Holmes and he made a satisfying target because he was the only person involved who was still alive.
Also, there’s that blonde guy that the witnesses saw.
Me too there's no way he would have killed his friend his gf and his own gf smh
It was ridiculous that anyone would even suspect him. Who would or could beat themselves to the degree of injuries he sustained? Most likely his shoes were outside the tent and the killer liked them. Took them and while running away realized he didn't want to be caught with them so they stashed them and get them later.
@@Shibby523I'm not saying it was him however several murderers would do that.
Another thing to it is, how the hell did nils do all of that, walk over 500m away, then back, and then do the injuries he had to himself? Are Finnish police really that incompetent?
The whole time I was thinking, "What about the guy who was responsible for all those empty beers behind the kiosk?!" Karl makes the most sense, IMO.
I kept thinking his wife is sending the teens a clue!
Thinking the two guys fighting that the two women heard was Karl and the white haired one - and the white haired lost and fled.
His son has refused to give police DNA, maybe he dont wanna know if his dad did it.
@@theblondeone7771
Disagree. The wife alibied him. She was as incensed as Karl about campers at the lake. *Theory* her constant berating, telling him he needs to do something….. so he gets drunk….. topped off with his already known disposition commits the murders.

I love that you did the Lake Bodom story.
They also created a very popular metal cover of Brittany Spears “Oops…I did it again” that actually turned it into a great metal song.
oh wow, I didn't know Alexi passed away. LOVED that band back in my teens.

WHAT?!

As I said a couple weeks ago, the camping/hiking/outdoors stories are my absolute favorites, but they are the most terrifiying, as I hope to one day become an experienced hiker who can go for days out in the wild.
The one from a couple years ago of the hiker being stalked for miles by the people in white especially stands out for me.
Trees are things and creatures that remain invisible to the human eye unless that person has what’s called “spiritual sight.” These people are able to SEE the paranormal, strange and supernatural that lives amongst. Or at least, they can catch a glimpse of them. But yeah, those were probably something from folklore, myths and legends. I know elves (they do have another original name or several) stays invisible in our society to this day! And they live in forests, caves, and restricted areas so on .
The number one thing I’ve learned watching Mr Ballen videos: NEVER go camping
Faxs
Plz go camping we need more content
I used to love camping and fantasize about getting back out there. Too much Paulides and Ballen and cryptids and I don’t really feel like being too out there anymore. The woods by my suburban home are fine now.
@@Staypuft1981 even then…don’t go out there after dark
Or hiking, swimming, going into a forest...
Hey John! Fellow South Shore Masshole here! Nice to see a local kid do great!!
Same here! Cape Cod.!
Samsies, Norton Massachusetts
Lol, masshole. We used to use that term at my college in NY.
He doesn't have a hint of that 'southie' accent.
South of Boston too…Shoe City & Shovel Town/Ames
This has inspired so many things in Finland still to this day and remains "unsolved" to this day.
-Love from Finland ♥️
17:27 Ya that's my uncle, and my cousin... and the baker down the street, the boy at the ice cream shop, and my other cousin.
Wait.. I saw that face in the mirror this morning.........
Ever heard of Monty Python?
Did the Band, Children of Bodom, get their Name from this Story?
finland must be a terrible country if this is still unsolved. Try DNA testing you simpletons.
@@pariah_careyyes they did, that’s exactly the reason behind that name
@@johananselmo Nice! I figured it had to be, because it makes Perfect Sense, considering that they are Children who got forcibly unalived at Lake Bodom.
Finland has a History of Top-Notch Metal Bands, like Demilich, Adramelech and Convulse, too. 🤘
Just blows me away at how big he’s gotten. Stay humble, sweet John
I'm finnish and I remember watching many videos about this some years ago, interesting case, thank you for this video 🙏
Love Mr. Ballen! Maybe the ad for better help was the best part. He speaks of overcoming his own depression. Mad respect and props to Mr. B and thank you for your service to the country!
Better help is a known scam. The company has sold their users data even after promising their users that they would not. Many users also have horror stories about the therapists they worked with.
Ballen makes it easy to listen to just the audio, because he paints such a good pictures with words!🔥
I love the fact Mr Ballen has blown up has pod cast, his own studio all that...but comes here every Sunday for the strange , dark and mysterious!!! Just like always.ThanksMrB❤❤
I definitely believe it was Karl and the lady from the kiosk who were responsible. It’s so obvious. I really wish the young girl had written about the kiosk lady in her diary. I do not believe Nils did it. Great story!! Thanks!! 😊
Holy crap my Dad is from Finland. I've been there many times. I'm going to ask him about this. I just asked my Dad and he said he absolutely remembers this. He said he was 10-11 years old and remembers this being the biggest story in Finland. It was on the news everyday for a couple years!
How totally COOL to hear you cover this up😍 I'm a Finn and this mystery in well known here amongst just about everyone.
You did well, thank you so much❤
Children of Bodom has been my favorite band for a long time, I really appreciated this one.
I’ve been watching you since 2020 and I just got flabbergasted when hearing ”Finland” 😭 I’ve always been silently hoping youd cover a finnish strange & dark mystery. Greetings from Finland!!!!!! 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Good for him listening to that neighbor. ❤
To the lake he goes!
I seen a documentary on this story. Even though I knew what took place, I still loved listening to you tell it. I enjoyed the story more than the actual documentary. Keep up the great work!!!
we all love a mystery, eg. Jack The Ripper, MH370
Immediately after you spoke the first sentence, I knew what the case was. But I stayed to hear your version and, man, I'm so glad I did! You can tell a familiar story in a way that still captivates and leaves me on the edge of my couch. Great job, John!
Same.
It’s truly as if your hearing the story for the first time when he tells it!
You knew the case?
I did but I try to look into cases that you don’t hear of much and while other cases pop up continuously I have only heard of this case once before John covered it here.
Absolutely same! I’ve watched this story various times, but Mr Ballen just has this incredible way of telling the story anew.
I have been watching Mr Ballen videos for several years and this is first times he is telling story related to Finland. Yay 🇫🇮
I'm happy to see you telling stories in person.
I've watched 56 seconds...I do love your humbleness. In this video I got the sense of how thankful you are of us supporting you.... and know....we love your channel! Thank you.
MrBallen's channel is one of the few that I watch the advertising. Reasons? 1) He is a great story teller. A completely lost art today. 2) He does sincere charity work, helps others. 3) His service. He's gone through hell and has seen real monsters, real horror scenes and landed on his feet. Unfortunately many vets don't.
Better help is harmful.
I just started my rotation in forensic medicine as a medical student and i unlock this new interest.
Greetings from Finland 🙏🇫🇮 Been a fan of your videos for some time now and so glad to see that you covered this mystery. I really like your presentation style😊This murder has puzzled us for decades

Finnish listener here! Thank you for talking about the Bodom case🇫🇮
Im from Finland and this is a really known case here. They even made a movie about it called ”Bodom” i really recommend watching it:)
Love catching brand new videos the moment they drop!
I get so excited to watch a new episode, getting all tucked up in bed with snacks! It’s a real Sunday ritual I’ll never not do! Prefect way to end the week🙏🏾
Awh me too! Except due to my time zone, when Mr B uploads its Monday evening so it's my perfect ritual of curing the Monday blues 🥰
Never miss a strange, dark and mysterious delivered in story format by Mr. Ballen.
Love your vibe Sir Ballen!
