I'm a security guard who does the graveyard shift at an old castle. I used to love walking around at night admiring the castle in all its glory.... now every time i have to go for a patrol, i start to hear Mr Ballen narrating my every move, and I'm starting to hear things 😢
@toinfinitybeyond437 Your comment made me chuckle! I can't imagine your job - so cool, indeed! Thanks for the chuckle. And don't worry, it's just the wind. (Or is it??)
I like to go camping and hiking. I also hear Ballen narrating my every move. One time I had just heard the polar bear story from him where the polar bear ripped through the tent and started eating the guy head first. I kept hearing him tell the story in my head while I kept hearing noises
@@zorrakas320it’s not still easy. There are way too many cameras and advanced forensics to put a homicidal suspect in custody. You look at the most “successful” and most infamous serial killers of all time, none of them are from the modern era. John Wayne Gacey (1972-1976) murdered 30 people before being caught. Jeffrey Dahmer (1978-1991) murdered 17 people before being caught. Ted Bundy (1974-1978) murdered 30 people before being caught. Jack the Ripper (1888) murdered five women before being caught. ---- The reason these kill counts are so high in such a little amount of time is because it was easier to kill and get away with it back then. Nowadays there are too many cameras. Even if you remain off camera, or are wearing a mask there’s too many ways to get caught. Evidence left at the scene will be analyzed by forensics and will get you caught immediately Cameras will identify you and get you caught immediately The biggest factor in my opinion is social media. Back then these people would kill and the only people stopping them were the police. Nowadays social media would be going crazy and millions of people would be aware of the killer. Not so stealthy anymore. --- Essentially it’s much harder to reign as a serial killer nowadays than it was back then.
The story of how Crippen got caught is fascinating in and of itself. Basically, he boarded a ship in Belgium disguised as a pastor, while Ethel was disguised as his son. That ship's captain, Henry Kendall, who was a huge badass with very dramatic life story himself, got suspicious when he saw them kissing and started to investigate them all by himself. Once he was convinced it was actually Crippen, he called back to London and informed Scotland Yard about it. In the end, Dr. Crippen became the first ever suspect to be caught via using wireless ship-to-land communication. Absurd stories like that just don't happen anymore nowadays.
@@NinnyPoo_theJoy True that 😅 I had watched Maritime Horror's video about the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in 1914 where Kendall was Captain and this story was briefly mentioned. So over the course of this entire video, I was like "Wait a minute, is this going where I think it is?" Would've indeed been cool if MrBallen had included that, but I guess he cut it for time reasons.
I wouldn't have batted an eye seeing a priest kissing "his son". It probably isn't his son at all and just some other kid. The captain really had his wits about him.
Plot twist: Belle killed the unknown man and hid him in the fire place prior to running away somewhere. And the Dr. And assistant just wanted to go make a new life where they wouldn't be frowned upon for being together and judged for Belle's disappearance.
The Crippens' home was rented. Previous tenants had been German medical students who had long gone home. It's been suggested that the remains, which were not of a complete body, might have been anatomical specimens brought home for dissection practice. As this was technically illegal and the specimens would quickly start to decompose without refrigeration they were hurriedly buried in the cellar. Also, a music hall singer who may have been Belle surfaced at some later point in America.
I was wondering how the specimens would still be rotting if it was from the previous tenants but then I remembered the dirt was clay which has a very slow decomp rate to other soils.
That's a good point. Also, the body had his tranquilizer in it. I'm convinced she was really a man. Ballen said she was beautiful, but i strongly disagree, lol! She was a dude. OR, he killed the dude she cheated on him with and buried his body down there. Or maybe it could have been both of their bodies, the prize fighter and the loudmouth cheater? I don't like her, lol. Either one of those possibilities could explain why they were drugged, then hacked up in anger later. Who knows, lol?@@mousepariah3884
Finally! Someone has covered this 🤭 I read about this case in a book about complicated Scotland Yard cases from way back when. They had put his diary notes in there
Idk if the websites still around but it was like "true cold case files" or something like that but yoy can see the actual notes and stuff from each of these cases
@@mattallan434 No, he admitted he lied about her going over there to take care of a sick relative. The detectives were still under the impression that she went to America after she "left" him.
I love the way you tell these stories! I'm homeless, living in a shelter, just got back to work and trying to get on my feet and listening to you tell stories helps me to escape reality for a bit so please don't stop doing this!!! I'm probably not the only person that listens to your stories to get a break from their problems for a bit and that's needed for mental health reasons. Thank you for this small break from my problems and life!!!
Good luck hun! I was homeless 2 years ago and lived out my suv. TH-cam got me through a lot of long hard days in my suv. I have my own place now and it took a lot of hard work but I'm so grateful! You can do this!
I've been homeless since July 30th 2021 when my ex and I broke up and I had to move out because I wasn't on the lease. Lived in motels and my suv-which is currently not working and now has a boot on it because my registration just Ren out the end of January and I haven't driven it since the middle of January. I get my first paycheck this week and was planning on paying my registration as well as to get it fixed. It's too much on me as my adopted brother just died on Friday and I'm beyond stress because of other things and the boot on my car was my last straw so during my lunch break I watched this to take my mind off of things so I could calm myself down as I was in the middle of an anxiety attack. Thank you all for your words of encouragement I do appreciate them more than you know

Laugh now, but in a hundred years storytellers will be able to post "real photo of Belle's Applebee's boneless wings" in their videos because of social media addiction.
I had heard this story before, but listening to it from MrBallen is a whole different experience altogether. Not only the manner of relaying the story is amazing, but I also got a chance to put actual images of faces and places to mere names and locations. Thank you!!
You left out my favorite part of the story - once Scotland Yard found out Crippen was en route to Canada, Inspector Dew got on a faster ship, arrived in Canada first, and personally met him at the dock to arrest him. They even performed Music Hall songs about it in London while Dew was underway.
@@Wes.jumpss He may not have killed his wife, but he had SOMEONE's organs and skin buried in his basement and there aren't many non-murder explanations for that
My first thought is that the unnamed male victim is either Belle's boxer lover, or some other person with whom she'd cheated on her husband. Was the boxer ever seen after this time period? Has anyone checked the DNA of his relatives?
We don't know if he was put to death for something he didn't do. We only know that the remains they found were not his wife. Still seems likely that he was involved in the murder of the unidentified man since 1: the man had the same tranquilizers in his body that the doctor created at work. 2: the remains were discovered in his basement. 3: The remains were put there somewhat recently while he had been living there. Although encasing the remains in clay probably hindered the decay process, it isn't likely that they were put there years ago before he moved in. 4: He attempted to flee the country after being notified he was under investigation. He killed the man, and probably also killed his wife.
This is what I thought too. Maybe the guy who his wife cheated with is laying there under the bricks? The one in the picture frame. But yeah, he ran hard, he was aware of what was in his basement - at the very least.
or... and here me out... the police planted the body and used the tranquilizer from the doctor's office to frame him and create a poison narrative. The whiskey drink and all that is just speculation in this narrative. All we know is that his wife disappeared, he lied initially about why and then "came clean". He could have fled after the initial visit from the detective because he knew they were trying to set him up and everything after is told through the perspective of Scotland Yard.
Doubtful, the guy was too timid to kill anyone. His wife murdered the guy and he covered for her. Also, the court system is sexist by allowing him to take the punishment and not the lady who was running with him even though it would be clearly obvious that she was involved. Feminism has rotted everybody’s brain.
I know people are going on about Crippin fleeing like that seemed super guilty, and I can agree, but playing Devils' Advocate the other possibility of that whole thing was Crippin and Ethel deciding to sneak out of London because their reputations were completely and utterly ruined thanks to Belle's friends straight framing him for her death and essentially branding him in society as a heartless cheater (all while Belle had done the exact same thing to him and I refuse to believe that none of those good friends of hers knew about it) was better than attempting to stay. When a group like that charity chooses to socially end you, that completely destroys your career and everything as well. They probably figured that sneaking out would cause less noise in this scenario. I still think this guy killed someone, though. Either him, or Ethel did and he was trying to help her cover it up, even if it wasn't Belle that they killed.
I have a slight theory that the guy who was killed might have been Belles ex lover or maybe since the doctor was testing out tranquilizer stuff you might have been testing it out on some human parts that he got because that was very normal practice for doctors back then and still today though the hair and pajama fibers don't make sense😅
@@TheIceCube2148The house the Dr. Lived in was previously rented by medical students- it is very likely that they may have been practicing dissections/ operating techniques on stolen corpses. This was an extremely common practice at the time- so much so there were gangs of criminals going around exhuming recently deceased bodies from cemeteries and selling them to medical schools/ doctors for large amounts of money. It goes without saying that this practice was highly illegal, and a motivator for some ambitious but scared students to try to dispose of a body when it started to decompose.
@@TheIceCube2148 Oh, no, I totally believe that Crippin killed the guy or was at least involved in killing him. That's the point I made there at the end. I was just providing an alternate reasoning for him and Ethel skipping town so quickly and under the radar if we're playing with the idea that he wasn't guilty.
Lol, I remember one of Ballen’s older videos, one of the pics he used for illustration was a still from “the walking dead”, and someone commented about that particular still giving their insight into what happened like it was a real photo from the story😂 it was probably a kid but I wonder if that’s the reason mr ballen clears that up for EVERY still/photo he uses LOL
Im currently struggling through withdrawals trying to beat addiction, i stumbled across one of your vids and ive got to say your masterful storytelling is really helping me through the days, thankyou
This is the first time I've heard that it was only organs etc in the basement rather than usually being described as his wife's remains, or her decomposed body. I've heard and read about Dr Crippen many times over the years but this just makes it a WTF moment.
@@ethan-rayya it could be anything like even that he might had been compelled to help another murderer for some reason and knew noone would listen to him and so he tried to escape Sadly we will never know
Belle reminds me a little too much of my grandmother (Rest-in-Hell). She did everything she could to destroy your soul. She was especially hard on her husbands, belittling them like Belle did to Dr Crippen. I only saw this with her third husband but I saw enough of the crippled lives she had left in her wake to know she was like this through and through. Surprisingly my father once told me that I should have met HER mother- she was even worse!
sounds like your grandmother and my mother should get together, though, with my mother, it was me she dumped on, not my dad or my "perfect" little sister
I find it encouraging when people can freely say how ghastly their relatives are or were! I have some truly revolting ones! They'd probably have either get on like a house on fire with your grandmother or they'd have ended up killing each other...
That body in the basement was that dude in the pic she kept on the mantle piece to torment him... He went and found him and did away with the man she kept belittling him with
That’s what I thought too 😂 MrBallen said he was put death for something he didn’t do but technically he did kill someone so 😅 and why was Ethel so sus? She knew a lot more too. He got rid of Belle to be with Ethel.
Ballen you're the MAN!!!! I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the "and we upload 3, 4 and sometimes even 5 times a week" days!!!! Happy for you buddy, keep on keeping on!!!!
He didn’t do it, they were there before him. Either that or Belle had done it. Probably wasn’t fleeing anything, just leaving England and the police took it as he was running. Not that hard to get, so um…

There is a book called Thunderstruck by Erik Larsen. It parallels the life of Guglielmo Marconi and Dr. Crippen and how wireless comunication caught Dr. Crippen. Side note, his wife was way worse than was covered here....
Yes, I read Thunderstruck by Erik Larsen. He is an amazing writer - Devil in the White City; Dead Wake; Isaac's Storm,; In the Garden of the Beasts; The Splendid and the Vile - I can't get enough of his writing, which is on par with Mr. Ballen's fantastic storytelling.
I could tell after her first appearance 😂. Any man dealing with a woman like that has to have alot of disadvantages in life. Maybe not financial but in self esteem and other areas.
One of my favorite authors. Came here to suggest him too the second I realized what the case was. Thunderstruck wasn’t one of my favorites (I think Dead Wake was better) but still a great read.
I remember seeing this case covered on TV a while ago, and the look of absolute catharsis of one of Dr. Crippin’s ancestors when learning his relative was innocent. It’s still an incredibly tragic case, but at least that innocence and the subsequent injustice is now known. Another example why the death penalty can *never* be just.
Just wanted to say that I've been watching your channel for 3 years now and you're a hell of a story teller, bro! I like putting on one of your playlists at night and fall asleep listening to you telling tales! Thanks for all of the content, my friend! Sik
Brilliant video! - It was also the first time that wireless telegraphy like morse code had been used by police to assist an arrest, contact between the police and the ship that they were travelling on led the police to race across the ocean in a faster ship, meeting them when they arrived… The house was victorian but was demolished in 1951 and a block of council flats was built in its place, there’s still a tree in front of the flats that once stood in Crippen’s garden… and the body of the man discovered in the house is buried in St.Pancras Cemetery, in a grave that was still marked as Cora Crippen (the last time we was there, a number of years ago now) Thanks for another awesome video, we’re absolutely hooked!
If it wasn't Belle's body, how come the birthmark on the piece of skin matched Belle's birthmark? Also, burying body parts in clay can delay the decomposition process. If Crippen wanted to escape the country after committing a murder, he could have bought some time to hide the smell. But overall details of this case just don't add up.
Crippen might have killed both Belle and her lover and mutilated both bodies enough so they couldn't be identified. Also, how could a meek man like Crippen find his wife's lover? Maybe he hired a hit man and killed them that way.
@siangoodwin867 Except they haven't been confirmed as such, except by the toxicologist, Trestrail, who was making the claim, on a tv documentary on Five, using his 'special technique', that was 'very new' and 'only done by his team'. In essence, this supposed DNA evidence and Trestrail's claim have already been disputed.
So Belle killed that random man and placed her strands of hair and her husband’s pyjamas at the scene of the crime to make it look like he killed her? Was it revenge
I was thinking maybe the doctor killed the guy who belle had the affair with. Would explain her hairs being on it and the drugs. Due to from Ballen description the guy was bigger then the Doctor. But your theory makes alot of sense.
@@FatesKarma. I agree with your theory that the victim was the fighter that the wife had been cheating with. But that leads to the real question. Where was the wife???

Could it be that the body found was of the Boxer/lover that Belle cheated with? The one in the picture on the mantle? If so, then I figure that he could have easily disposed of her body. Or, after drugging her, he showed her his handiwork, then told her to be gone before he woke up. Not just out of the house, but out of the country or she'd be next.

Last time I set up a tent. My cat went out and stayed out for over an hour. I was worried and pissed at him for being gone so long. He was 14 years old but very smart intuitively. My hair was on end and I didn't understand why. He was a real warrior. When he came back, he would not allow me to sleep in the tent. He kept climbing over me and not letting me get comfortable. Once we got the bed roll and blankets into the car and locked ourselves in - he was okay and let down his guard and we both went to sleep and got a good night's sleep. I would find out the following week that my friends were gone and the Divide, CO police and forestry service told me that the weekend of the 4th of July that 6 campsites of people disappeared from the Crags campground on the west side of Pikes Peak leaving everything they brought with them at their campsite including vehicles and all camping gear. id start by trying to find out what dead male bodies were supposed to be in the morgue at scotland yard that week. I have a feeling that miraculous discovery wasnt as miraculous as we think.
The body in the basement could very well have been his wife’s lover, the one in the photo that she displayed to irritate her husband. The fact the body did not have a head meant it was someone that was probably known to both residents of the house. Since the body was still putrid, it was still decomposing and that it was still a pretty recent death. Even though Dr Crispin’s wife was never found he was still guilty of killing her (circumstantial evidence) and more than likely responsible for the person in the basement. Interesting, side note, this case was the first one where Morse Code was used to alert the Captain on the ship that they were fleeing on of their wanted status by the police.
16:34 let’s all give Ethel here a round of applause for single handedly saving the majestic bald eagle by letting it build a nest on top of her head 🙌🏻👏🏻
my theorie about this is that the male they found, was most likely the first person he killed or maybe even the husband/boyfriend of his new girlfriend, they did it together, they killed their partners. or he was a serial killer and the male found in the basement was his first murder and he didn't know how to get rid of it so he dismembered it, as it's the insides of the body that smell the worst so putting it in clay makes sense, also after finding out that the way he got rid of the actual body worked better, he did that to his wife. or, he and his wife killed the man and she just ran to america to never be seen again.
You know, you're one of the inspirations I had for starting my own storytelling shenanigans on TH-cam, though mine are about really really old Japanese folktales and aren't nearly as well made. But maybe someday, I'll be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, good sir, and thank you for giving me hours of entertainment at a few jobs and on drives in a way more meaningful than a silly comment. Keep up the good work.
Well, even if the body wasn't belle, there is a chance that he still murdered this body or, kind of a stretch, maybe Belle did by taking his tranquilizer and then she freaked out and took apart the guy. Another thing is it couldve been the guy she had an affair with! He couldve been angry at the time and killed him using the tranq because he was a fighter and Crimp was a smaller dude not built to fight. Then, due to his anger, dismantled him and buried him and that's why he wasnt particularly reactive about Belle bringing him up, because he was already dead! I dont know, im just rambling out my thoughts, haha 😂
Mr Ballen needs to go on tour from city to city just getting on stage and telling all audience new stories we haven't heard and also retelling us some of his most popular TH-cam stories. He should even have a segment where people can vote on which of his existing stories we want him to retell.
He may have done it but didn't find the body. My theory is that the body could have been her former lover. Either way, you would think that someone would notice a person making cement or getting new bricks back then.
I was thinking that too. Seems like a stretch to call him innocent when a body was still found in his house whether it was Belle or not. Seems odd that he would lie about his wife being in America to avoid scandal, but show up with another woman to a function with all her friends there… 😑
Yes, and it would explain why he was ok with the wife displaying her ex lover’s picture. The wife maybe thought she was getting her way by displaying the picture, but to Mr Crippen it was a trophy. If only Hitchcock were still around to make the movie!
even if he didn't kill Belle and the forensic scientist was really sure that it's not Belle's body, it's still a dead body, so he's not completely innocent. he might not be the murderer of the body if it's completely decayed, could've been a long lost unsolved case, but they say the body is so smelly which means it's still in the process of decaying, most likely recently dead. so i think Crippen was still guilty for murder but not for the murder of Belle.
Clay is an excellent preserving material. They've found bodies in English towns covered in clay and mud that are practically mummified, along with the wooden structures preserved. It would be hard to tell just when and where they came from if it was all inside clay, especially back then.
@@Chris-cf2kpI think the loose organs would decade faster or forensic scientist even back then could tell if they are actually old, and even the horrible smell i feel they were actively rotting. They even could find the drug inside the organs as well. My first assumption would be that its maybe Belle's male lover, but obviously the case should have been properly investigated before executing the guy
John has made so much progress by just being himself and kind and sharing his passion. In the world of Strange and Mysterious Mr.Ballen is the Keanu Reeves of TH-cam and Amazon.
Just watched the documentary about the Louisiana 8 and immediately thought of MrBallen. Would be cool to see him cover this so the case is in the spotlight. I think they are hoping it will fade from public eye Edit: Jeff Davis 8 in Louisiana
His wife could have also done the murder, maybe he got his mistress as a revenge since she cheated on him so he showed the mistress off to her friends, he couls have tried fleeing because it seems like he did not like scandals, and an advertising for belle to return deffo stirs some pots. We will probably never know who did what and what their motivations were
One theory is that he was performing illegal operations and the body belonged to a patient who had died during one of these. He couldn't get licensed to practice medicine in the UK because he wasn't a real doctor, so it's plausible that he might have been doing something like that under the table (and, since he didn't have actual medical training, that someone might have died). Generally people were thinking specifically of abortions, which wouldn't fit with the body being male, but it's far from established that the body was male because the sample was tested with an experimental technique. Another theory is that the police framed him because a) they believed he did it, they just didn't have evidence and b) they were facing a ton of public pressure to solve the case. Personally I think this one is more plausible, it has definitely happened before in other cases.
if that hat impresses you, if you ever get to San Francisco, be sure to see Beach Blanket Babylon at club Fugazzi, an incredible satire of pop culture and national politics that is worth the trip out here for, along with everything else we have to offer!
Doctor Crippin is a pretty well known & documented story here in the U.K. And I love Mr.Ballen but the two latest stories I heard & watched were different to this one. They both had Mrs.Crippin buried in a cubby-hole in the wall of the front room, the house didn’t have a cellar. (Basement). They did catch him & Ethal on the Starliner bound for America but Ethal was dressed as a little boy. Weird, this one’s a little different but I’m gonna go with Mr.Ballens as the one nearest the truth because it’s Mr.Ballen. And listening to his version is better than watching it on TV.
I think Ethel did it. She has Access to his house when they started dating. and she works with him so she could have taken the drugs. And if what you said is true. Then she looks more guilty because she was trying to be passed off as someone else.
Well, put to death for something he might not have done because maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but we'll most certainly never know the full story, regardless. It's highly intriguing, though, which makes it all the more disappointing that we'll never find out exactly what the hell actually took place.
Doesn't take a genius to know Crippen murdered his wife - he pretty much confessed when he was arrested by the senior Scotland yard officer on board the ship!
I learned about Crippen decades ago after watching the Monty Python guys 'Climb the north face of Uxbridge road.' Some people say this is crazy. Well, they said Crippen was crazy. Crippen was crazy! Well, there you go.
I'm a security guard who does the graveyard shift at an old castle. I used to love walking around at night admiring the castle in all its glory.... now every time i have to go for a patrol, i start to hear Mr Ballen narrating my every move, and I'm starting to hear things 😢
Now I’m gonna do the same thing 😂

I like to go camping and hiking. I also hear Ballen narrating my every move. One time I had just heard the polar bear story from him where the polar bear ripped through the tent and started eating the guy head first. I kept hearing him tell the story in my head while I kept hearing noises
Just imagine how easy it was to kill back then and not get caught. Or how easy to accuse you of something you didn’t do.
it's really scary to think about to be honest. i can't imagine how many people in more remote places were killed without anyone ever knowing.
It’s still that easy.. half of the “unsolved crimes” are crimes that were committed like that.
@@zorrakas320 He could of place her remains in lye to mask the odor from the body?
Yes it’s kind of scary
@@zorrakas320it’s not still easy. There are way too many cameras and advanced forensics to put a homicidal suspect in custody.
You look at the most “successful” and most infamous serial killers of all time, none of them are from the modern era.
John Wayne Gacey (1972-1976) murdered 30 people before being caught.
Jeffrey Dahmer (1978-1991) murdered 17 people before being caught.
Ted Bundy (1974-1978) murdered 30 people before being caught.
Jack the Ripper (1888) murdered five women before being caught.
----
The reason these kill counts are so high in such a little amount of time is because it was easier to kill and get away with it back then. Nowadays there are too many cameras. Even if you remain off camera, or are wearing a mask there’s too many ways to get caught.
Evidence left at the scene will be analyzed by forensics and will get you caught immediately
Cameras will identify you and get you caught immediately
The biggest factor in my opinion is social media. Back then these people would kill and the only people stopping them were the police. Nowadays social media would be going crazy and millions of people would be aware of the killer. Not so stealthy anymore.
---
Essentially it’s much harder to reign as a serial killer nowadays than it was back then.

“Not a real photo of the whiskey Dr. Crippen served”🤣🤣🤣
Lol
Alright
This is legitimately fascinating like you said! Would’ve been great to have him include that❤
@@NinnyPoo_theJoy True that 😅 I had watched Maritime Horror's video about the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in 1914 where Kendall was Captain and this story was briefly mentioned. So over the course of this entire video, I was like "Wait a minute, is this going where I think it is?" Would've indeed been cool if MrBallen had included that, but I guess he cut it for time reasons.
A story in my family says that my grandfather was the postman who received the telegram.
Interesting. That makes a lot of sense.

Her lover perhaps? The boxer man
or... and here me out... the police planted the body and used the tranquilizer from the doctor's office to frame him and create a poison narrative. The whiskey drink and all that is just speculation in this narrative. All we know is that his wife disappeared, he lied initially about why and then "came clean". He could have fled after the initial visit from the detective because he knew they were trying to set him up and everything after is told through the perspective of Scotland Yard.
In civilized countries you're innocent until proven guilty, not innocent unless it seems likely you're guilty.
I freaking love how Mr. Ballen tells stories.
But how was Crippen not the one to kill the skin and intestines guy? Im super confused
@@TheIceCube2148 did you miss the part where the op said “I still think this guy killed someone though.”
Thanks for another awesome video, we’re absolutely hooked!
This was great, but I think we also need a part two! Lots of questions to answer or theories to speculate on...
Maybe he hired a hit man and killed them that way.
it depends. There can be confirmation bias, there can be a birthmark that was not that uncommon.
The remains have subsequently been found to be male. They were not his wife.
They faked evidence .. pretty obvious they were convinced he was a killer ..
Was it revenge
no the DR was probably the killer of that man,as for Belle she probably did just dip and live a whole another life somewhere else
Or the husband killed another man and tried to hide his body there. He was trying to escape, so he probably did something.
I was thinking maybe the doctor killed the guy who belle had the affair with. Would explain her hairs being on it and the drugs. Due to from Ballen description the guy was bigger then the Doctor.

It was Michigan State University looking into it.
Sounds like most modern government-type funding 👀😬😜
I'm pretty sure it was just a research project not a real investigation
Ballen literally said it was a Michigan state professor, not a police department 😂
Mr. Ballen gets me thru the graveyard shift, to spooky to accidentally fall asleep
I seriously need to thank you! I’m having some weird heart issues and when my heart pounds or races your videos are the only thing that distracts me. My family is used to me chilling wearing my heart monitor and ear buds binge watching your channel. Thanks much, seriously, for helping me get through this!
My whole Sunday revolves around the new mrballen story!! Been a fan since the begining
One of your best yet! A guy with a grudge can be every bit as spooky as a witch in a forest.
I would not want to run into the guy or the witch in a forest (especially at night) and I would not like seeing Mr Ballen in that forest late at night either . . . . hitting my tent with a branch or illuminating his face with a huge smile and flashlight while laughing and reciting some stanza he'd invented out of thin air.
Kidding & giggles aside - I saw another feed where no one wanted to run into you at night in a forest either Mr. Ballen . . . . That really got a laugh out loud from me. And I thought to myself (at night) . . . me neither!!!
Thank you for the entertainment - I like the subtle changes and the stories . . . I won't camp out in the forest without an RV or van - - - EVER ever Ever again. I had 3 friends disappear off the backside of Pikes Peak (the crags campground . . . around the first of July 2016 (with 3 dogs - a poodle, a pug and and pit bull) I slept in that forest that week that they dissappeared right below their campsight about 35 feet away with a creek inbetween us . . . The police refused to make a report and I left with the total impression that the area I vacationed in as a child - was as corrupt and dark as it gets.
I quit camping up there after 2016 - beautiful area - creepy things go down there in the mountains.
So far I haven't seen a TH-cam cover a story that I hadn't heard before, but at least I can remember all the old scary true stories with all the facts presented with all the relevant information.
Favorite Sunday afternoon tradition with the hubby and kids! ❤ you have gotten me through fun times, like road trips with the family... but also through hard times, where I'm so depressed and can only lay In bed and watch your amazing story telling skills. Thanks for being an amazing constant in our lives!
You let your kids watch these? I hope they're teenagers. It's not exactly kid-friendly material.

Don't feel bad. Being first isn't significant either and telling people you're first is beyond stupid.

You must live a very empty life.
So this is it . The boxer whom bell had the affair , was the remains found . Dr. Crippen also did kill belle , but hid the body more efficiently . Belle kept the photo to remind Dr Crippen she knew what he had done . That is also why she had such control over him . Dr . Crippen had months to get rid of Belle's body bit by bit .
"I hate you, but I won't turn you in for killing my secret lover even though you can kill me at any time," lol what?
That makes sense. Thought the same

@chloiephillips1905 Again, dumb theory. He can kill her at anytime meaning her "dirt" is only as valuable as he perceives her life. She would have to be an idiot to stay because, "I can walk all over him"

I wish MrBallen would bring back the 4-5 times a week schedule… but it does make my Sunday
Yeah, those were the good ol days😌 I like the podcast and the medical mysteries, but honestly would rather have several actual videos like this every week, theyre way more fun than the audio only uploads, which mostly are just retellings of old stories
@@steverobertson1729 What I miss are the hidden items in every video, even if I never found them I was so focused on the story, lol. I think the last time was in a video about some guy at Burning Man.
Really makes you wonder where Belle went all those years ago and who the random guy was underneath his house
Random guy was the square jaw man, I'm confident of that
id start by trying to find out what dead male bodies were supposed to be in the morgue at scotland yard that week. I have a feeling that miraculous discovery wasnt as miraculous as we think.
She got away with murder.
@@nrgao Interesting
@@jonseon5952what square jaw man?..
16:34 let’s all give Ethel here a round of applause for single handedly saving the majestic bald eagle by letting it build a nest on top of her head 🙌🏻👏🏻

hahaha imagine MrBallen going "aww man, i did it again", then searching for synonyms online...
Dr Crippen is really all of us huh…
I thought something was amiss at that edit. 😂 Good catch!
"They were both theater people." was so relatable. Lol.
my theorie about this is that the male they found, was most likely the first person he killed or maybe even the husband/boyfriend of his new girlfriend, they did it together, they killed their partners.
or he was a serial killer and the male found in the basement was his first murder and he didn't know how to get rid of it so he dismembered it, as it's the insides of the body that smell the worst so putting it in clay makes sense, also after finding out that the way he got rid of the actual body worked better, he did that to his wife.
or, he and his wife killed the man and she just ran to america to never be seen again.
Same thought
I thought the same thing
Yup, that's where I went too.
You should write movie scripts heheheh
That's what I thought too😂

Mr Ballen needs to go on tour from city to city just getting on stage and telling all audience new stories we haven't heard and also retelling us some of his most popular TH-cam stories. He should even have a segment where people can vote on which of his existing stories we want him to retell.
I can't be the only one who waits on Mrballen every Sunday afternoon 😂😂😂😂
So did Detective Doo deduce who did the detestable deed, or did Due duck direct due diligence?
Yes

Dunno
Perfect
He may have done it but didn't find the body. My theory is that the body could have been her former lover. Either way, you would think that someone would notice a person making cement or getting new bricks back then.
@Mrs.thomas I was thinking that. That the Dr could have killed both his wife and her lover.
Uhhmmmm where was the prizefighter she cheated with? That was my first thought.
even if he didn't kill Belle and the forensic scientist was really sure that it's not Belle's body, it's still a dead body, so he's not completely innocent. he might not be the murderer of the body if it's completely decayed, could've been a long lost unsolved case, but they say the body is so smelly which means it's still in the process of decaying, most likely recently dead. so i think Crippen was still guilty for murder but not for the murder of Belle.
You make some good points.
Also, considering the sample that was tested was 100 years old, it could be contaminated.
Or maybe the wife put the body in the bricks 🧱 👀
@@Deisel76 right? like why was her hair found on the body if she wasn't involved in the murder?
Clay is an excellent preserving material. They've found bodies in English towns covered in clay and mud that are practically mummified, along with the wooden structures preserved. It would be hard to tell just when and where they came from if it was all inside clay, especially back then.
@@Chris-cf2kpI think the loose organs would decade faster or forensic scientist even back then could tell if they are actually old, and even the horrible smell i feel they were actively rotting. They even could find the drug inside the organs as well. My first assumption would be that its maybe Belle's male lover, but obviously the case should have been properly investigated before executing the guy
Belle is treating her husband like the like button 😂

John has made so much progress by just being himself and kind and sharing his passion. In the world of Strange and Mysterious Mr.Ballen is the Keanu Reeves of TH-cam and Amazon.
Just watched the documentary about the Louisiana 8 and immediately thought of MrBallen. Would be cool to see him cover this so the case is in the spotlight. I think they are hoping it will fade from public eye
Edit: Jeff Davis 8 in Louisiana
And the Ft.Worth trio.
Is it on Hulu?
@laurachristensen3201 I watched the one on paramount+ via Amazon (Murder on the Bayou) but I'd imagine there could be more 🤔
They found a dead body in his house!!! A missing wife, dead body, and a mistress sure he was guilty of something.
His wife could have also done the murder, maybe he got his mistress as a revenge since she cheated on him so he showed the mistress off to her friends, he couls have tried fleeing because it seems like he did not like scandals, and an advertising for belle to return deffo stirs some pots. We will probably never know who did what and what their motivations were
@@Artemis_666nah he shady
@@randomlyswatching9481 we have basically no info, yea he seems shady, so does everyone else in the story imo
Along with all that…he tried to flee the country with the mistress…

I always get that sense of extreme dismay when a story ends on a mystery
I did not want this one to end!!
Ballen's not the best source for truth 😆 He's a great storyteller but he's not a documentarian.
@@chazcartwrightbut did what?? Belle wasn't killed, or at least not found...
@@chazcartwright Yeah, maybe but Dr.Crippin has always been associated with murder & bad things. But you could very well be right.
Well, put to death for something he might not have done because maybe he did, maybe he didn't, but we'll most certainly never know the full story, regardless. It's highly intriguing, though, which makes it all the more disappointing that we'll never find out exactly what the hell actually took place.
schrodinger suspect
He could have killed her along with some other guy, maybe the guy was the one she slept with
Doesn't take a genius to know Crippen murdered his wife - he pretty much confessed when he was arrested by the senior Scotland yard officer on board the ship!
I learned about Crippen decades ago after watching the Monty Python guys 'Climb the north face of Uxbridge road.' Some people say this is crazy. Well, they said Crippen was crazy. Crippen was crazy! Well, there you go.
Even if that wasn’t the wife’s body, the guy is still not innocent. Innocent people don’t run and there still was a body in his basement.
