Origin
The Bielefelder Kennhuhn, or simply the Bielefelder, is a domestic chicken breed. It originated in Germany in the 1970s in the Bielefeld region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Nordrhein-Westfalen. It was developed by crossing several breeds, such as the Malines, the Wyandott, and the Amrock. Initially named the Deutsche Kennhuhn, it was first exhibited in 1976 and was officially recognized by the Federation of German Poultry Breeders in 1980 when its name was changed to the Bielefelder Kennhuhn. The breed was introduced to the United States in 2011.
Description
The Bielefelder Kennhuhn has a beautiful plumage with a complex cuckoo-like crele patterning that becomes more defined as they mature. The plumage is reddish or golden in coloration with a brown or black back and tail. An interested and helpful characteristic is that Bielefelders can be sexed after hatching. Male chicks are lighter with a white or yellow spot on the head, and the females have a chipmunk-like stripe on the back. The Bielefelder has a large single comb and red wattles.
Uses
Bielefelders are fast-growing, meaty birds and good egg-layers. They are bred for their meat and eggs. Hens produce about 230 large brown eggs per year.

The Bielefelder is a friendly bird with a gentle temperament. They are intelligent, active birds that enjoy interaction with people.
