My issue is that these natural hair companies really use being black owned as a MAJOR aspect of their branding and corporate identity to gain the community support and loyalty of black women (who are the majority of their consumers) but then drop that aspect like a hot potato when a white corporation comes sniffing around looking for another acquisition. I guarantee the quality of of the products will decline, I guarantee the number of lines of products will be reduced and the reason for that will be so the white corporation can make product lines catering to their demographic in the spirit of inclusion--"inclusion" to an ethnic haircare company.
I wish her and her husband well but my desire to support anymore black owned businesses is decreasing by the day as being "black owned" seems to have an expiration date attached to it.

Hello 👋🏾! You brought up many points in your comments. I definitely agree that the black owned title is often used to gain support and make money. It is inevitable though that most of the black owned companies we know and love with one day no longer be black owned. It’s the trend that’s being going on for over a decade. Once black dollars build it, it gets bought out as a part of the come up. I am truly hoping they don’t forget their consumer base (BLACK WOMEN), and continue to keep black haircare in the forefront and not let it become an afterthought. Only time will tell if they owner keeps these promises. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I agree. And a lot of people try to act like this isn't what's happening. When someone sells you on a product being for your hair and then changes everything to suit white hair, there's a problem. I expect things like this to happen because companies that are loud about being black owned are the first ones to sell to whites who don't give a fuck about black people. You're better off making your own hair products, tbh.

@NeoDarkling, I totally agree with everything you said.
Even if they keep the same ingredients, I'm overall disappointed that all these black companies sell their black businesses to non-black. They have already built the black clientele just to be sold to non-black. We should be living off our own black dollars, creating generational wealth instead of giving them our generational wealth for their families. I pray we learn to do better as a people. 🙏🏿

Businesses sell. This isn't a black thing. A mark of success is often starting and selling multiple businesses. Let's not limit these black entrepreneurs by acting like they shouldn't sell their businesses like others do. Those who are so concerned about it, make your own and decide not to sell your business regardless of what happens and what opportunities present.
I get the disappointed when a product you love changes. It's just how some act as if the owners are betraying black people that is strange to me.

The ultimate concern with any acquisition of a black owned hair brand is that the product is going to turn into a more "universal" taste, usually meaning tending to more eurocentric hair types, and consequently no longer being effective on the more textured tresses of black hair. We saw this happen with Carol's Daughter, we saw this happened with shea moisture, and the concern is that Mielle will be next to be watered down so that it's marketable to European clientele, at the expense of tending to black hair needs. I'm happy that they were able to secure a historic deal, but hopefully they keep their word that the formula of the product will not change, and will still continue on to tend to their core audience, which is the black community.

    • @CammyjOfficial
      @CammyjOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +5

I will never try a Mielle product. Folks are saying their hair is only shedding, becoming thin, dry, brittle from using Mielle. The actual product has changed from what I gather. That stuff is way too expensive to cause damage and harm. I bought a hair product heavily promoted/advertised from an informercial 20 something years ago. It made my scalp sore and scabs all over. My hair became very dry and brittle. It took about a month for my scalp to heal and had to have my hair cut. That product became no more since other's had the same reactions. Mielle should not be on shelves. It's a disgrace for a hair care product to promote what it's for but does complete opposite causing damage and harm. That is different from trying a product and doesn't live up or quite live up to what looking forv but doesn't cause harm in any way either. This is different. Too many people saying the same thing it's a trash product. Meille isn't growing if people who bought and used Mielle liked it once upon a time but saying has had opposite effect and can't/won't use it anymore. It's that simple.

Or building a country off the backs of people and then eventually being exclusive to everyone…. Cammy, Black owned business, especially black women owned companies, are not able to get the same loans and financing as white, Asian, Latinos, etc. and it has nothing to do with not being a good investment. It is unfair to black people yet this is what is happening in the business world that discriminates against our people. Only thing we can do is support black owned products more than other products which as a whole we are not doing as a people. Do you see what is happening with Arian Simone who is being represented by Ben Crump bc a white male is filing a lawsuit against her company that provides funding for black women bc most companies don't invest in us? So yes this is a real problem. It is sad they have to share or sell their hair companies cause I bet they don't want to yet owning a business can be overwhelming. People saying the owner Monique Rodriguez sold it all and has nothing to do with the brand anymore when that’s not true. She is still CEO, still in control of products and they are a subsidiary brand in P&G now. Thank you for watching and commenting!

People need to think about passing the crown to the next generation, instead of an immediate pay out. A wise man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. He doesn't sell his birthright for a piece of bread. These corporations buying up businesses that they had no hand in creating are thinking long term. Their children benefit from generations to come by aquiring businesses from people willing to sell out. While the person who's sold their family's birthright, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will have to start all over!

She still retains the majority share on the business. Her family and her generations will definitely benefit from the deal she made because she made the deal in a way that allows her to remain in control as the CEO. Mielle Organics is now a subsidiary of P&G, they weren’t absorbed into the company. They are their own stand alone company that falls under the umbrella of P&G.

Today was my first time buying the Mielle leave in conditioner. I usually make my own, but one of my diy ingredients was out of stock. So I grabbed the product out of Target. The problem I have is that these companies usually stop using the same healthy ingredients for our. Recently, I saw that there’s a class action lawsuit for women who used perms. Fibroids etc! I know those companies had to have known those ingredients were harmful to BLACk women. After all we were their target market. I don’t believe for one second that P&G will keep healthy ingredients in the products for long. Their track record says they won’t. Had I seen you video before I bought Mielle, I would have taken a hard pass on it! I will make sure that I stock up on my diy ingredients from now on. I think some of us wonder why we build up everything we have or good at pass it on to the high bidder. Because as fervent as you seem to be, wonder Michelle didn’t make video like this.

@@CammyjOfficial My level of frustration is that these companies who thrive off of us do so because our hair care needs were ignored by these yt owned companies for eons. I think what these are doing is destroying from within. Typically, when a company like P&G buy you out they always get the recipes. Then eventually they brush the original owners asides. Those owners have lost credibility with their core demographic, so they can’t regain that initial trust. I understand business. I own a business, but selling it is not in the cards. Thank you for clearing up for those who do not understand the concept. To those who are not believing or trusting in Mielle products because the products were sold to another company then just put a pause before continuing to support and wait a while to see how it all unravel in the end. This means that if the products no longer work because some changes were made ingridents wise, then do like you should move on to what's best for you like the owner of Mielle products did. Great video. "Black owned businesses" are looking to turn a profit and sell to a bigger company to make more money or even retire from the business. It's hard work. That is called business. Every company does it. When it comes to "natural hair products", there was nothing "natural" about Mielle haircare products nor any other "black-owned" business because if you are going to sell at the mass level, where it is being sold to stores to sell to their consumers, then they must abide by FDA rules to be able to sell at a mass level.
The formula probably doesn't change much; all these companies are using the same proven ingredients in their formulas. Take a look at the ingredients label on the products, and you'll see..

personally i don't really see mielle changing their formulas for a "white" audience anytime soon. P&G has been trying to get into the natural hair space -- aussie, head & shoulders, and pantene have all recently been coming out with more lines catered towards natural hair (and they own the brand "my black is beautiful" like?) mielle is not only catering to the natural hair niche, but is consistently releasing new natural hair products - they just launched an avocado collection! mielle has been doing what shea moisture does now, creating lines that capitalize on trendy ingredients: rice water, honey, sea moss, rosemary, etc (& they're pretty much just the same stuff in a new bottle with a different scent 🙈). i feel as though P&G sees mielle as a way to get their piece of the natural hair market, a way to actually compete with the the conglomerates that bought out shea moisture, carol's daughter, mane choice etc (some of which are still lead by their founders), so changing the formulas (especially with this visibility) isn't good business in the short run.

Corporation only buy small companies where they can see a good ROI (return on investment). I’ve seen this too many times with dog food companies (of which P&G use to own until it sold its pet food division to Mars - yeah the Candy people- in 2014). They buy a brand, and to make more of an ROI, something changes in the ingredients to make it more profitable. Corporations don’t buy smaller companies out of the goodness of their hearts. Excellent perspective! Peeps need to see the 'bigger' picture here. The purpose of most serious minded business owners is to expand their business, their market share & maximize their growth & profits. That's how business is done. Unfortunately, (to my knowledge), there aren't any global afro-centric hair care conglomerates that can buy up or partner with the smaller domestic black hair care companies. So these smaller companies partner up with other global (mostly white) companies that can help them grow to the next level. This is a no brainer.
As long as companies like Mielle continues to appreciate & cater to her (minority) base that got her to that point, not change the formulations that grew her business, while she pursues to expand her target audience (non-black folk), & develop products for them, than it's all good. Folk just need to grow & evolve their mindset and accept, 'what is'. & not how they want things to be..cuz, if they don't, in most instances, they will be disappointed. They need to ask themselves - why are they upset over this; how does Mielle's business decisions impact them personally and how is that emotional reaction benefiting them? What's the payoff for them?
If they ask themselves those questions, they may get an epiphany & realize they are wasting mental/emotional energy on silly stuff. For one's mental health, one should always choose positive emotions over negative ones (i.e. anger, fear, being upset, etc..), esp. since what others do is OUTSIDE of your control...and in most instances has no DIRECT impact on u.
