I'm Thai. I know something about this. It took a lot not to be colonized. Making Russia a friend, modernizing the country are some of most important things to make Thais survive a very difficult time. Thailand was bigger than it is now. King Rama V had to lose many pieces of land to France and England in order to save what's left. That hurt him tremendously. They say that that's what killed him, grief. I also remember reading a story about French naval ships broke through Thai naval defense in gulf of Thailand and moved up to Chao Phraya River pointing their cannons at Temple of the Emerald Buddha, threating to fire and shut down Gulf of Thailand if Thailand fail to pay them 3 million of French Franc in cash within 48 hours.
The story of Thailand independence really does show how smart Rama V was, he played western countries against each other by learning how they think. Yes, there were some losses along the way, but he showed that he could make the difficult decisions for the greater good, there is no doubt that weighed heavy on him.
The story of the french navel ships is also interesting, I've been working on a video that includes part of how they broke through the rivers defences. you can still visit the island where the navy base was.

Chris you have done a lot of homework for telling the history of colonization in south east asia. Kudos!!! The invasion from western countries started since even before Bangkok became the capital city of Thailand around 1650s, Ayudhaya Era. And the colonization really hit hard to Thailand during King Rama 3, 4, 5, 6 , which was around 1780 onwards. These are so many stories, which have been portrayed in many Thai movies and drama series.
I just want to throw in a piece of Thai History. Since the king Rama 3 had stabilized Siam (the name before Thailand) from neighboring countries like Burma, the king Rama 3 had worked hard to establish the relationship and trading with China and western countries, which resulted in a lot of income in gold saved in the palace. There were story telling that someone asked the King Rama 3, why saving so much gold in palace. The King Rama 3 replied "Saving for tough times the future. And we should be worried about western power.".
The King Rama 4 is the younger brother of the king Rama 3, who can speak western language fluently and had prepared his sons by hiring westerners to teach them as much as possible about western countries.
The King Rama 5 (son of King Rama 4) was the first king to travel to Europe and Russia. With the smart diplomatic strategies such as losing some of Siam's territories to save the Thailand today, the king Rama 5 could save thailand, but he was sick and passed away at the age of 57. It was very painful process for Siam or Thailand.
The main story is this. After Siam-France Conflict in 1893, Siam must pay money as fine to France in total of 2.3 milllion Franc within 24 hours. A lot of gold from the palace including the gold saved during King Rama 3 era was used as the payment to France (23 ton gold coins). The gold was used to save Siam or Thailand as the King Rama 3 wished. It is just a tiny bit of history true story always amaze me.

Yet again, another banger! as expected tho. Victory Monument has a rather rinterestest design history, It has a distinct western design which is a stark contrast to more Thai elements in other monuments in the city. Also lots of interestesting tidbits about the designer and artest who worked on them, I've actually got a video planned about one of them soon.
Boat noodles originated from Ayutthaya.
In the past, to be able to eat boat noodles, one had to sit and wait on the river bank.
I just learned about King Taksin the other day from my Thai landlord. The history here is so interesting. Looking forward to learning more

I’d just add that during WW II. The Embassy of Thailand in the U.S., never delivered papers declaring war against then U.S. and other countries.
They claimed they had no choice but to let Japan enter there country. So for those reason, receive little punishment.
Thai scholars in the US also participated into secret soldier operation called Seri-Thai to secretly spy on and some attacks on the Japanese. With the PM's knowledge behind the scene, that helped saying Thai was also on the US side. Its two face politics in the sensitive situation for weak country that had been invaded by surprise by Japan.

Victory monument.. I saw from room 75 floor at Baiyoke Sky Hotel, it was the first thing I went to look around on my first Thailand trip in 2008..
Victory Monument was a big one with all its lanes around it

I must say this is very funny. Everybody in Bangkok would think about "Boat Noodle" when we hear the word "Victory Monument" ... not the history.. 🤣
What I appreciate about this is that you actually gave recognition to the works that Thailand put in to not be colonized. Forward thinking King. Clever diplomatic maneuvers. Smart uses of various trade deals and treaties. All were the efforts put in by Thailand to make it difficult to colonized. Other "history" channel pretty much gave all the credits to the Europeans for deciding not to colonized Thailand. Like somehow it was the benevolence of the European Nations to spare Thailand.
Knowledgia 2.9M views video. KhAnubis 966K views video. They're both completely disregard Thailand's shrewd diplomacy. They concluded that it was all Europeans doing that Thailand was spared.
Also, like it or not, Thai monarchy played a massive roles in it. At the time, Thais were pretty much hold a unified cultural identity, thanks to the King. Colonization is difficult on people that unify so strongly under one identity. The main tactic of colonization is to divide and conquer, separate the people into various political groups and turn those groups against their own nation.
If you actually look into history of all the colonized nations, they ALL have this in common. A lot of infighting between groups in favor of the European empire VS nationalist. Colonization is impossible without strong local support.

I did the boat noodle thing at victory monument, but when I got to a restaurant my limited ability to speak thai failed me, so I missed out on the small bowls. Was only when I was walking back I remembered I had a thai english translator on my phone DOH!!! well maybe another go on my next visit.

What a twist for hype of Thai Boat Noodle ! Yes ,it's always make foreigner frown for the Victory Monument but never for Thais. It's easiest place to have first experience on boat noodle but definitely not the best place. Not bad anyway.
I want to add one thing. About Thailand joining Japan in WW 2. Siam was fighting the French and its navy was almost cripple. Then the British and French became allies that was one of the reasons that Siam joined Japan.
