    You know you're a true photographer when you make statements like: "I went back, excitedly, to shoot some crappy old carpet."
    By the way, the Japanese have a concept for what you're describing in these photos: Wabi Sabi. It means perfection in imperfection--a kind of melancholy, real-world, weathered, broken-and-repaired, dying, suffering...kind-of-thing.

      I think another good description would be liminal spaces. A feeling of distant nostalgia, but also emptiness for some reason

    I was a young kid in the 1970’s. I hated this era so much, but now I’ve embraced it. I was a teenager in the 80’s a huge Duran Duran fan peppered with the rolled up pastel coloured shoulder padded jacket sleeves that was given to us by Miami Vice. Designer stubble too. I used to shoot with a Mamiya 645 and a Mamiya C330 twin lens reflex, you know, when photographers were brave maverick types who had to change 120 or 220 roll film mid flow at a wedding reception without interchangeable backs. Oh yes, we had balls of steel back then while the rest of the people shot with their crappy 110 cartridge cameras. Boy they were bad. I never sported a moustache though. I was too busy trying to pull on my skinny jeans like Ross from Friends. And yes, I did smack myself in the face a few times trying to pull them on.

      Thanks Nick.I appreciate that! I’ve got to say your approach and your channel is quite unique and your dry sense of humour, ( yes, that’s how we spell it over here, like colour instead color) is so funny. In fact the best TH-cam video I’ve ever seen and which made me laugh so much was your trip to Paris. If any of your new subscribers haven’t seen it I suggest they watch it. I too have a love of great architecture, film and California in particular. The light there is sublime. So when I came across your channel a few years ago, it was photography Nirvana,for me. I love American buildings, particularly iconic gas stations of the past, anything that screams 1950’s America. I also love the look of the average American streets. Why, I don’t know, but I do. When I was in San Francisco I shot the Painted Ladies as you do, but then as everyone else was photographing them I was drawn to apartment blocks joined together, one side pastel blue and the other lemon in colour. The way the sun has side lit them just drew me in. I was the only one photographing them. I have that image framed in my bathroom. So, inspired by your passion of film photography, I have had my passion reignited for film. My latest purchase is an old rangefinder Canon Canonet, which I bought on my birthday the other week. It’s a nod to my late Grandad who gave me his Canonet, my very first camera when I was a young boy. Time to burn me some images on to film. Thanks for all the great videos you make. The fact we only get to see you once in a while means we all really look forward to having that little bell notification that Nick Carver is in town, so pull up a seat and enjoy the show. Less is more as the saying goes. Sorry for rambling on, but you really do have this TH-cam thing well and truly nailed.

    There’s nothing like the smell of a public library that hasn’t changed the carpet or curtains since 95’. The look, the smells, the or the ambiance give you a funny feeling inside. Maybe nostalgia, or trauma from the late book fees - I don’t know but it takes you back to simpler times!

    This reminded me of an engineering building at nuclear plant I visited a few years ago. One Friday in the late 80s, they sent everyone home and canceled construction of the plant. It looked like they had left the day before I arrived. Old half-read newpapers and magazines were at people's desks along with mugs that still contained coffee and daily calendars that hadn't been changed in 25 years. It truly looked like a zombie apocalypse or that I had stepped back in time. Sadly, I was unable to take pictures, but it was such an odd experience that I'll never forget it.

    So many of those shots are stunning, the staircase at 10.41 is compelling and a beautiful composition, film has done something digital couldn't with that, makes me feel weird but I keep looking at it, it's like deja vu, an emotional overload. And you and your friend nailed it Nick. I worked dressed in a suit in a place not unlike like that until 1999. Quit and got in to construction, outside a lot of the time and my soul has thanked me! Man your work's good.

    I smashed the like-button so hard the moment you turned around!
    Edit: Now that I've also seen the pictures I wish there'd be a double like-button. A few years ago I probably wouldn't have cared for them, but today I think they are more interesting than most other photos I've seen in a long time. I was born in 75 in ireland and this really gets me .Every thing seemed to have three dimensional geometric(al) shapes printed in primary colours back then.very Miami vice .We had nothing like this around here but it loooks so familiar to me . American culture just seeps in from movies music and tv I guess . If photography is there to stir emotions you have definitely done that here Nick great job man. This is definitely up there with your best work for me .

If someone can't see how good these are they aren't worth listening too. Not many folk can muster up such tight comps and atmosphere from anything let alone an old 80's mall. In awe, just great.

    Wow we are getting spoiled lately! What a break from the norm. I was born in 1981 so I know this architecture all too well. Reminds me of a private elementary school I attended in San Dimas in 1990 that I kid you not, looks JUST like this. I’m sure it’s still there.
    Pasadena city college also maintains a building from this era.
    Indeed you brought me back. I was NOT expecting this from you of all people. I loved it. Images looked great! Thanks for the journey and look forward to more!!!

    Love the photos. Keep them coming. Because making them has meaning for you they have meaning for us. It is far harder to derive meaning from a Joshua Tree - unless you have as visceral a reaction to a tree as you do to the thought of wasting your whole life in an 1980s office!

  • @paulvanobberghen
    @paulvanobberghen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's kind of amazing that late 80's architecture has already become archeology matter! This building was a paradigm of what once was called "post-modern" architecture (not the most significant example of it, though) and 30+ years later only, this is considered kitsch as it could be, but a photographer comes to immortalize it, and that is a good thing, because it is very likely that next tenant will probably completely transform it or just level it to the ground and build something else on it. So your work - and I very much like that you're doing it on film - is more like archeology. A testament of what was once and soon be gone. Music of that time remains (you can use a short excerpt as long as you quote the copyright owners) but this office building will probably soon be gone and it will only live in the memory of the people that once worked there and... your pictures. Keep on doing that. It's important that someone does it.

  • @Just-a-Guy1
    @Just-a-Guy1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. I'd love to have a Mamiya 645.It was my dream machine back in the 70s and 80s. 2. That building is just cool as it is. Sometimes architects have final say about how a property can be changed and in that building, updating would take all the modernization out of it and it would be a sin. 3. I shot a bunch of lofts in the Deep Ellum District in Dallas last spring and I didn't want to stop. My point is interesting environments cause interesting photos. It's a chemical reaction and I can't help it. Thanks for sharing.

    I started photographing architecture in OC back in the late 60's. I photographed South Coast Plaza being built, the Fluor buildings, Fashion Island/Newport Center, The City shopping center in Orange and the Bank of America building. Before the B of A building was finished I shot the interior and photographed fireworks from the top floor. (The City ;was torn down and became The Block of Orange, and I lived right across the street), I photographed the Crystal Cathedral being built. The cross on top of the older building used to shine into my bedroom a couple blocks away. I shot UC Irvine being built. The buildings surrounding South Coast Plaza as they went up. Basically a whole lot of buildings. I originally wanted to be an architect then got bit by the photography bug while at OCC. And then i got bit by the computer bug so kept switching majors.
    Later I got into photographing older buildings like the original Lido Theater in Newport. Have you ever been inside the Santora Building in Santa Ana?
    Back in the 70's I wanted to go up and down every street in Huntington Beach within a mile of the ocean to document it before it changed into what it is now, a bunch of $1 million and up homes and expensive retail shops. I photographed Maxwell's and Golden Bear across the street, Sugar Shack (which is still there and still popular), a bunch of the little surf shops up and down PCH. The pier being torn down to build the new one.

      As a born-and-raised OC resident, I love hearing this kind of thing. I’m sure I’ll be telling similar stories about all the buildings I’m shooting now.
      I’ve been in the Santora Building several times, mostly for the art walk down there. Santa Ana has some great old structures.

      @@nickcarverphoto You'll most likely see the phase where the buildings from the original boom in the 60's and 70's are being renovated or torn down and that will be a worthy project to document.
      Four years ago I moved to St. George, UT, couldn't afford to live in OC anymore. Anyway there'a a woman photographer whose published a book of collected photos showing the beginnings and growth of the area, something similar to what I wanted to do with Huntington Beach back in my youth. wchsutah.org/documents/images-of-faith-book.php

      @@nickcarverphoto The first time I visited St. George/Washington Utah 4 years ago I was reminded of OC back in the 60's during it's crazy growth phase. When my folks moved into a new home in Santa Ana in 1960 us kids could literally walk around the corner, about 3 houses away and be in orange groves. Harbor snaked through farmland from Fairview in Santa Ana to Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa. My dad worked at Ford Aerospace in Newport (that's where Ford Rd got it's name, that's where the facility and testing grounds were, now it's all expensive homes.)

      @@nickcarverphoto Did you by any chance go to OCC? In the 70's they were considered one of the top Photo Depts west of the Mississippi. I've known several Brooks students who told me if they had to do it all over again they'd have gone to OCC and saved the money.

    This is oh so wrong but oh so right. I think it has to be called method photography like method acting. You totally committed to the role. If you’d taken anything other than 80’s cameras with you I would have been disappointed. And I understand the carpet. You are not alone.

    Wow that is some good stuff. It's amazing how that era just stamps itself. I'm from the East Coast but a corporate building from 1987 would look exactly the same in New England as it does in California minus the palm trees.
    And shaving your beard is some serious dedication to fitting the theme!

    me too, I would invest a few bucks in a "dead inside" book ... really liked the pastel colours , and redundant nature of the subjects in the shots ... the through the door shots, plants and the funture shots I am big sucker for ...

    Great work! I rediscovered film photography earlier this year, and one of the first cameras I bought was the camera I dreamed of owning when I was 15 years old back in 1987. The Mamiya 645 Super with an AE-prism finder and an electric winder. I thought it looked so cool and modern in the ads in the photo magazines back then. I have a couple of lenses, but the 55mm f2.8 gets the most use. But I can't decide if I love or hate the sound of that power winder, though.

    This Could only be an American Video, because here in the Good 'Ole UK I'd die to work in a building built as recently as 1987! My own current workplace where I minister to the sick and needy of this parish (I am a nurse) was probably built about 1900, has no double glazing, damp in all 4 walls, radon gas in the basement, peeling paint, carpet you can't tell what colour it is and a ridiculously small car park. Oh well, can't have it all. I'd love to wander happily through all those potted plants...

    Fantastic. I was bit by the Stranger Things bug when I binge watched it during a vacation in February. I fell in love with Eleven and I fell even more deeply in love with the setting. It full on called back to my childhood and memories came flooding back... and feelings... and a longing for those simpler childhood years (granted, I wasn't fighting monsters from another dimension). The pics are great. I feel like you captured the whole decade just perfectly. Now, my friend... find yourself some thin, brass frames and put those babies on the wall ;-)
