I've had mine for around the same time. Tip: I've worked out if I you do a nozzle maintance test and leave the printer on it doesn't use as much ink. By that I mean I print a test paper and do nothing else, then just close the paper tray so you don't walk into it and repeat that process every other day. If you don't and turn the printer off by pushing the off button, when you start it back up that's when the usage kicks in. On TH-cam you can find old Joe who walks you through the pro's and con's. For me it's just a little to much overload but good on him he seems like a great guy.
Not sure I get it. If your monitor is correctly calibrated, and you have appropriate profiles for all your printer/paper combinations, then what you see on the monitor with soft-proofing will be what the print will look like.

I wore out my old Epson 3800 and than a 3880 and that one died in the middle of the pandemic when it became next to impossible to find a new larger format printer. Finally after many recommendations and my problem with Epson spitting ink near the end and new print heads not available, I swithed to the Canon 1000 about 3 months ago. Have learned a lot of tricks with that printer and there is a LOT of missinformation out there about it.
First....it does not waste as much ink as some report. When new it will go through about 60% of the ink filling the tubes....but the next cartidges will not have to fill the tubes so last a lot longer.
Next...there are tricks to save ink and the most important one is to go into the settings and turn off the auto shut down which is settable to various numbers of hours or never....set to never.
To prevent clogs just print something every couple of days....i doesn't have to be a large print....even just a 1" square tiny print does the trick. I like to reduce my test print down to that size so it uses all the inks. If you have an extended period of time when you won't be able to print, there are apps that will do that automatically.
The big mistake owners make...especially hobbiests...is to think that the printer can sit unused for longer time and not have clogs....it it does clog the heads can be cleaned but that uses ink...a lot more than my method of a tiny print every day or so. If you are a hobbiest you may be better off just using an outside print service....it will be cheaper in the long run. In my case I do print more prints but also want the absolute control I get by doing my own printing...especially since I print many sizes including non standard sized of prints.
I have a surge protector and it also includes a Uninteruptable Power Supply so if the power goes off it won't turn the printer and the rest of my gear off....thus saving me a wasted ink purge cycle when it gets switched back on.
I use ICC profiles with mostly Canon papers but also have used HP and some of my old Epson paper.
There is one issue with the software provided by Canon that I and some others have noted. I am able to use the 8 bit driver and 16 bit drivers with Photo Shop and Lightroom no issues. However, Canon comes with a plug in called Print Shop Pro which is really a great plug in with lots of neat features BUT for some reason it no longer prints with the 16 bit driver alhough the 8 bit does fine. The difference between the two is minor...mainly a bit smoother transitiion in blues and violets gamut. I contacted Canon about this but they are working on it. I suspect that a new update from Canon may have caused the problem (not sure of Apple but I believe someone found that to be an issue also). If you pull up the file that it sends to the printer....the 8 bit is fully populated whereas the 16 bit drops all out. The symptom is that if you try to print with the 16 bit driver it will go through the loading process but the paper will just pass through the printer without any printing. I do have the latest Canon Firmware so that may be the problem....my printer came the latest firmware which I think is 2.0 which was released recently. That firmware does give some additioonal features such as now being able to print up to 17"x 47".
The fingal tip is that do NOT change inks when it says they are getting low. At at point there is a LOT more ink. I have a very accurate gram scale and weighted a full cartridge vs. one that is "low"....there was still about 20% or more ink left. Wait until the ink runs out. Also you can change the ink without triggering a purge of all the inks. Run a print through first and than change out the one cartidge. It will start up just as normal. Some were waiting until a bunch of inks showed low warning and than replacing several at the same time. This is a waste of ink....just replace the empty one. The newer printers have a more robust ink tank latching mechanism so you can actually remove and replace a ink tank without any problems....if it is low, Some of the original printers had a problem with breaking latch mechansm. When you put it back it will show the same amount of ink remaining as before. This is where I use my gram scale....a new tank weighs 115 grams on my scale....when it is nearly completely depleted it weighs 45 grams.that is when I replace them.
Hope this helps other owners save some money with wasted ink. I have not gone with after market inks so I won't have any issue with my extended warranty. But others have without issue although some colors may not be quite as good as Canon....I have heard the red ink is the one that causes problems. I am a professional photographer and also astrophotographer so the inks I most use are the glossy black and grey due to the night sky background so at one point I would be tempted to go with an after market black. If you have the same issue with the Print Photo Pro plug in I would love to hear about it....and please complain to Canon so we can get some action. It isn't an issue with pringingh from the Adobe programs but we paid for a 16 bit printer so it would be nice for Canon to give us that ability in their own software.
Bottom line...the PRO 1000 is one hell of a great printer and built like a tank.
HOLY SMOKES! Thank you for all the rich info!!! I definintely try and print every few days as well! I think I am going to try going back to the Canon software again... LR has done me well the last year, but worth a shot to try the Canon again. Thanks for the heads up on firmware too though!
Also do astrophotography myself, just captured my first Heart & Soul and Veil nebula, I keep looking at the Pro1000 as it's meant to be the ultimate flawless printer. I'm currently on an old Epson all in one which won't accept my high quality image and it prints off blacks as a noisy green.
I like the thought of being able to print A2 and also being able to do 17" panoramic sizes BUT I won't be using it all the time. When not printing, do they tend to just fill the maintenance cartridges up? I read somewhere that if you were storing the printer for a few months at a time you can in fact turn them off and they'll do a startup maintenance cleanup which wastes some ink, but not nearly as much as if you were to leave it on for 3 months automatically cleaning itself.
I just wondered if you could clarify if any of that is true? As you say there is a lot of misinformation and it would be great to hear it from an owner/user first hand.
I am also in the market for a Pro-1000. Please point me in the right direction for an App that automatically prints for an extended period of time. Also which uninteruptable power supply do you use? I would love to shut it down for a month or two, as @connolly3000 mentions, but the troubles afterwards are scary. Waiting for advice on this, thanks.
@@Chris-m8j8f Hey mate, after watching an endless amount of videos last night, the conclusion I came to was that I won’t be printing as a business, I’d like to but even if that was the case, startup and getting daily printing going isn’t going to be straight away.
In the UK, the Pro300 14ml cartridges are roughly £150 (£1.03 per ml) as opposed to 80ml cartridges for £520 (55p per ml)
By leaving the printer without a job for a few weeks alone, your printer will use the difference in ink just on maintenance to avoid clogs when you come to printing another actual piece.
My conclusion was that the Pro300 can be shut down for a couple months without issues as has been said in a few videos so while the ink isn’t as great value in bulk as the pro1000, it outweighs the cost of throwaways because when you have to replace the inks wasted on maintenance, you’re left with a hefty £520 bill as opposed to £150ish.
I’ll wait to see if the printing service I’m looking at starting up kicks off well enough before purchasing a commercial end printer that needs to be running all the time, only then will you not waste ink! Hope that helps
@@Chris-m8j8f I use Qimage Pro which is great for printing as well as it can be setup for auto test print each day to keep nozzles clean and not blocked. Have used it with my printer since I got it two years ago and works great. I set it up to print the test print at 4"x5" and than 1/2 size to minimize ink usage. Th UPS I got was from Office Max as I recall and cost about $100. You don't need anything other than one that can keep the power on in the event of a power outage. I don't want one so large so it can continue to print.... no need for that. Keeping the power on prevents a re-start whch wastes ink by triggering a purge cycle. Also go into the printers screen and select the option to never turn off the printer. The only power it uses in that mode is to illuminate the little LED which is nothing. Depending on when your printer was made.... you should check for any firmware updates. There was one about 1 1/2 years ago that did make some differences in ink usage/purging.

The Pro 1000 has to be run always , if you let it sit it will clog the nozzles and you will need to run cleaning cycles that will consume lots of ink, the 12 cartridges are about 600+$ OEM, if you do not plan on using it ALWAYS , stay away.
@@photozen8398 I got worried about this. When you say ALWAYS, can you estimate how long can it be sit (without printing) without having a clogging issue ? Thank you.
@@ReidoMato The printer does the cleaning cycles to maintain the superb output, you need to print at least twice a week, that is the minimum that will maintain the nozzles in good shape , if you let it sit for long time idle you will run cleaning cycles and waste ink ( so either get your inks on prints you use in your business or personal pleasure or use inks in the waste cartridge) . I did fall in the trap of letting it sit idle for weeks and I got a clog on the grey channel that I could not get to resolve, I do a cleaning cycle and the clog is gone, I print and run a nozzle check afterwards and clog is back, I am out of warranty, I called Canon they said it is the purge unit ( meaning your printer is going to trash) and they will not help beyond that, there is no service center for canon printer anymore and it will cost you if you go to private repair center the cost of a new printer, what I did finally is using windex on the purge pad sponge that alleviated the problem for now ( but did not resolve it, I still see the missing parts of the grey channel on a nozzle check, but improved significantly) , moral of the story:
If you are not going to commit to print ALAWAY ( at least twice a week) do not buy it. That by the way applies to all high end printers with expensive inks.

@@photozen8398that’s true for all ink jet printers. Therefore, the Pro 1000 would not be ideal for someone who does not make a lot of prints.

I am considering upgrading from my Canon Pixma Pro-100, even though I am a hobbyist and primarily print for myself. I watched a review on the Pro-1000 yesterday. The reviewer cautioned that the 1000 makes beautiful prints, but the printer needs to be used quite regularly, otherwise a LOT of ink is wasted when the printer starts up. I guess it cleans the print head(s) when it starts, and the heads have dried out from sitting for a few days, the amount of ink wasted can be a serious consideration. Do you have an opinion regarding this issue? Your video was great. Thank you.
That video is accurate… when the printer isn’t used it regularly cleans itself and you end up having to purchase a maintenance cartridge… which is basically ink wasted 😩

No doubt it is a great printer, but I cannot afford the INK! I find it less expensive to send my prints out to MPIX. I usually print larger than 22X17 and having the Pro-1000 would not always suit me needs. Beautiful photograph of the Horseshoe!

How do you keep you printer clean and unclogged. Do you just use it a lot? Are there any long term storage options?
I actually try and print just one 4x6 a week, if I'm not doing large prints for sale! I've started this practice to keep the ink from being wasted. I am printing snapshots to put in a photo album... like the good old days :)
See my recent post about how to minimize ink wasting in the recent posts for this TH-cam post. Set the printer so it never turns off (done from the printer management in the printer)and print a tiny photo every few days....all you need is a 4"x6" print or smaller....print a small image in the 4x6....i.e. a 1x 1/2" photo. If you don't set it to never turn off it will auto do so after various hours (also set in the options). Each time it restarts after being shut down it will purge some ink to prevent clogs....if you print something small it doesn't need that.
There is a free utility for the printer that calculates the cost of each print....you input the actual cost of ink, various paper types....and it not tells you exactly how much ink of each tank was used on a specific print and how much paper is used....it than gives you the actual cost per print as a running table. You input your cost of ink and paper so you can update as prices change....hopefully down but not likely ;-)

I have not read one reveiw that takes into account , the cost of the unit which if you print on A3 and you print around 60 prints a year cost 20 pounds, yes the next fill is more economical but at a cost of around 6/7 00 pounds , which will/should cost around 7 pounds per print , but the printer is worth zero should you wish to sell it. If all goes well and there is not a problem and you have minimum waste and you sell at a good price its great, there are lots on the S/H market with faults and are not selling because it cheaper to buy a new one when you take the cost of the ink into account.

very interesting, appreciate you discussing the merits of the printer and the tips you are using to smoothen the work flow. a few years back I struggled with up grading to this printer from an older, smaller format canon printer or sending my printing to a professional print lab which had an exceptional reputation for excellent printing. at that time I opted for the lab. having developed a close working relationships turns out to be a huge factor. having all this said, it is a costly route for sure. any thoughts on this sbject ? zen billings in canada
Having that relationship is key!! And I'm assuming you were close to the lab as well? I live about an hour outside of a major city and don't want to do prints virtually - hence my decision to bring it in house (literally lol). The cost is quite a bit... that being said, Canon does have some great software for accounting that provides cost per-print based on the amount you spent on paper, ink, etc. That can help you stay above water with selling!

I too live quite far from the lab (1.5 hours away by car). on occasion I do visit but shooting only digital i send images digitally and they ship me the prints at no cost to me. Nice video. Are those prints in the back white bordered or are they matted? I'm really wanting to get into printing and am having trouble deciding between the pro-200 and pro-300, or maybe even starting cheap with an 8720. I'm also not sure I will print consistent, so I'm not sure if dyes would be better than pigment, or if it's the same.
Hi there! Those frames are from Ikea (RIBBA) and the white is the matte. I would start small for sure! I bit off a LOT with this thing and wasted a lot of ink/paper/money in the beginning!
If black and white is your thing, then pigment inks appear to have the edge. They are also archival, if printing on archival paper. Keith Cooper has some very good videos on that

What frames do you use for your 17x22 prints?
I use the Ribba frames from IKEA! I plan on doing a video soon of a refresh of my photo wall and will talk about this as well!
There is an option within lightroom that allows you to tell the printer which paper you are using and if you want to optimize the ink. You can find it on the bottom left hand corner, select the drop down menu in the middle and select "quality and media."

Great question! I haven’t printed on card stock type material but I know the print heads can accommodate thicker papers.
Most of the cost of the printer is the inks, the machine itself Canon/Epson hardly make any money on it, just enough to cover the material marketing, manufacturing and R&D costs. When you purchase a printer you are pretty much purchasing ink. I have been printing with the Pro 1000 for close to two years. Printing your work and framing it and hanging it on a wall is night and day from looking at it on a digital screen, but hat's just me. You can not make mistakes with our prints, it can become costly. The Canon Pro 1000 inks for the entire set go for $700, $60 for each individual cartridge.
In regards to ink costs, you need to print regularly, if the printer sits for too long the printer goes through a maintenance cycle which wastes lot's of ink that goes into the maintenance cartridge, that also cost around $20, every time it is full it needs to be changed or the printer will not let you print. So you need to print, print, print. This is why many people who initially purchase a printer eventually give up on it do to costs of inks and paper.

Firmware Update 3.010 brings panorama printing to the PRO 1000 beyond 17x22.

I would suggest to calibrate your display. This will show you that most displays are set way too bright and need brightness to be not more than 50%. But please profile. Then print using the icc profiles provided by the paper vendors (hahnemuhle and ilford factory profiles are very good). This takes the guess work out of printing and makes the whole process very consistent. I use qimage to print on macOS.

I found your video days after I got my Canon Pro-1000. It's an excellent introduction to new users. If I were to add anything, it would be to mention how to make pattern prints in advance of printing the final photo. As you may know, "pattern prints" is the tab located at the bottom of the color settings panel. It's uses less ink than making small test prints to get the colors right.

Canon printers are bullet proof. After going through 2 Epson photo printers, I purchased a Pro-100 7 years ago, and it keeps on trucking. One critical area you omitted is the necessity to color calibrate your monitor(s) with a hardware Colorimeter like the Spyder or X-Rite.
I found your video informative. I would caution you, and your viewers, that it's critical to have your monitor calibrated. (This is especially important for Mac computers that tend to be overly bright resulting in dark prints.) Also, regardless of your paper choice, why didn't you use a printer profile?
I am reluctant to buy another Canon printer, although this presentation intrigues me. I stopped using a Canon Pixma Pro 100 because of margin issues. It was always a battle to print a photo with a uniform 1/2 in or 1 in border around the image. You could get 1/2 in on two sides, and then 0.56 on the others. The lack of symmetry drove me nuts. Strangely, I can send my photos to a lab online, and get those nice uniform borders. Now if I wanted a borderless print, no problem. This begs the question as to whether Canon's print drivers can handle uniform margins without problem?
with the latest firmware I think it can print 17x44", secondly while I was observing the paper come out of the printer, I saw a kink on the paper at the bottom left, was it a paper issue or the paper feed+ printer roller issue. Otherwise an excellent video. !!!
Learned much from the video, sorry if I missed the info, but what was the equipment used and the settings. I think you should do a video showing the workflow for the photos to the finished produced.

hai miss Mallory can y tell something about that every week expensive paint flushing of the machine .I red that to tacklle that expensive aotoflushing that you should print an A4 paper with low colour flets letters on it to fool the machine and avoid that after a few months no printing the whole machine ink is finished.How do y manage Mallory or do y print often? regards.

Surprised ink jets came to dominate, despite the problems of dried heads & slowness never being solved. 30 years ago, they seemed like they were going to become a temporary solution until laser printers got cheaper.

I do not understand the work flow for tips? if you calibrate your monitor and use ICC profile for the paper, what you see on monitor is what you get from the printer, and no need for those steps that can throw your perfectly taken image off.
Hi there! Thanks so much for the comment and you're spot on. The monitor brightness can skew your perception of how the image will print. Just a friendly reminder to folks to not trust the monitor completely, but rather take a look at the histogram as well :D
I really enjoyed your presentation. I too use a Canon 1000 and love it very much. I occasionally have difficulty with an occasional bent corner but it doesn’t happen too often. I primarily print in b&w and I’ve found that some prints require a different paper so I use two and sometimes three types to achieve the luminosity and shadow detail. Thanks again I have subscribed and look forward to another video.

ICC profile ? Soft and hard proofing ? IS it true that the Pro 1000 comes with full cartridges
Howdy Robert! I will be doing another video on ICC profiles soon! The printer does come with “full” cartridges, however the display will read that it’s only at about 3/4 full as the ink will be pulled into the system. Ink lasts way longer than I’d expected!

What is happening in the white balance tip? I'm not sure how the WB has been checked with this method?
By overexaggerating the vibrance and saturation, it shows the dominant colors in your shot and gives a clearer picture of 1)if you WB is correct and 2) how the image will come out for print :)

Canon Pro printers, maybe the easiest to own printer. I have the pro 100 & have gone as long as 4 months without printing with no problems. I try & print something every week or two. Expensive to own but really adds to the whole photography experience for me. Canon papers are fine for most printing that will be mounted, framed & hung on the wall. Tried a couple of sample packs of Canson papers & like a few of them. Adds to the experience (especially the heavier papers) if your going to be handling them. Have a couple of Red River paper sample packs I'm going thru now. Some nice ones. Next will be Moab paper & after that Hannemule.
You do the File/drop down menu to page set-up thing in LR? I let LR or Affinity Photo control the color. But if your way works for you, that is all that matters. Own Qimage also but am so use to printing from LR. Slacker when it comes to filing so to re-print a photo after months, might take some more work than it should.
Anyway, some very nice photos, and prints. Happy New Year.
Great call out! I do try to print (even just a 4x6) on my Pro-1000 every week or so as to not waste ink! I have Moab 13x19 and it is SO NICE! Yes, I use the LR Print module and keep it to auto. @@mallorydavisphotography I get a email letter from Lest P about printing. Him & his partner favor the Moab Juniper for a lot of their work. If you look up panoramas-nodal point you will probably come across one of his vids. He is using a RRS pano set-up in the bid. Probably came across him through the Moab site. Thanks for the reply.

Great questions! I try to print once every 2 weeks, at least. In one year with a TON of printing I went thru one entire set of ink.

Wow... that's really sounds much better than people think...
I almost srart to forget about it, and didn't want to... One guy read from a letter that someone "lost" half of the ink to the printer... Anyway, I can print on canvas with bright colors for keeping it running and draw with colors the samples, as I already planned, so it won't be wasted.

I cannot imagine how the expense of this printer could be worth the cost compared to the Pro 1-- which give great results.
Ahh yes, the printer head replacement is around 600 - 800, if you should dry run it
We replaced a Pro-1 with a Pro-1000. Mainly because Canon stopped updating the drivers for the older printer so we couldn’t install it on a new Mac. Plus the new one has WiFi and a screen which makes use much more convenient.
Mmm as I eventually bought a Canon Pro 4100 printer I will tell you what I have learnt. As the 1000 and the 4100 both have 'pigment' ink opposed to dye ink this is what I have found. Pigment ink is no where near as vibrant as dye ink so your excitement over your color gamut is perplexing to me? I was basically underwhelmed when I first saw my color prints. I do a lot of B&W which is where the pigment ink excels. So the big advantage of pigment ink is the archrival properties which insures longevity of your work for your customers/collectors, that is really it's selling point.
got mine 3 yrs ago, here they sells it as Pro 500 but basically is the same printer. Until this day my printer counter is 6542 prints as i wrote this, and still works like champ, i barelly need to do head cleaning, because the printer can maintain by itself. i mostly print 30x40cm print, compare to my old epson, Canon is more superior, and more durable. With epson, if i'm not use the printer for a week, than i need to do cleaning cycle, and the printhead is more expensive

Why don’t you use the ca in print and layout program from canon ? There is even a Lightroom extension. Very good and easy to use.

I like the cabinet the printer is on. Is it from somewhere online? Looking for a good spot for printer.
Another final advice, try to not print borderless too often, you will get the printer head spraying the ink on the edges of the platen when it puts the ink on the edge of the paper and you will get a very very dirty platen that you may regret down the road, keep the borders it will keep your platen CLEAN, my pro 1000 is more than 5 years old and it is clean like a whistle, I never printed borderless.

I do use the canon plugin for Lightroom to do my prints but in Lightroom itself did you not find paper printer profiles help out? I do notice a colour difference in images. Just curious if they come out the same in Lightroom and don’t need to bother with paper profiles, that would be nice :)

Hey Mallory! I am an artist, I paid a lot with white ink on black paper. Was wondering if you have any experience printing on matte paper and how did you find it, and also how is the ink usage? Currently I have Pro 100 and I am considering to upgrade to Pro300 or Pro1000, but I wonder if any of them have better ink usage at all. Thank you for your videos!
Hi there! I prefer more glossy images, but I have a set of MOAB 13x19" matte paper that is BEAUTIFUL! I don't think the usage varies too much between matte and glossy, but I could be mistaken!
