MPC 1986 Dodge Shelby Charger Turbo 1:25 Scale Model Kit (DUE DECEMBER 2023) MPC987 987
The MPC 1986 Dodge Shelby Charger is set to return after 30+ years. This 2-in-1 car is a great project for the moderate model builder. Add it to your collection today!
This kit is filled with many optional parts including rear louvers, fender flares, a stock or turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, stock “Shelby” wheels or optional custom chrome wheels, a detailed chassis, and a front-wheel drive system. Also includes remastered water-slide decals with ALL-NEW bonus graphic options, all wrapped up in vintage packaging.
    Features:
1:25 scale, skill level 2, paint & glue required
    143 parts
Molded in white, clear, transparent red, and some chrome-plated parts
    Black vinyl tires
    Built size: 6.75 inches long
For 1979, Chrysler brought out sporty versions of the L-body Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon called the Dodge Omni 024 and the Plymouth Horizon TC3. The cars shared a 70 hp (52 kW) 1.7 L Volkswagen inline-four as the only engine.
In 1981, the Charger nameplate returned as a performance package on the Omni 024. Called the Charger 2.2, it cost $399 extra and came with a hood scoop, quarter-window appliques, special gearing, rear spoiler, and "Charger 2.2" tape graphics, as well as the new 84 hp (63 kW) 2.2 L I4 engine that was designed and built by Chrysler. A total of 7,306 were built.
In 1982, the Dodge Charger returned for a second year as the performance option for the 024. Nothing was changed from 1981 except for a Pentastar emblem on its hood and the addition of a resonator to the exhaust, since the previous model had no muffler, utilizing the catalytic converter as the sole method of engine noise reduction. Production increased to 15,000.
In 1983, the Volkswagen engine went out of production, so a joint Chrysler/Peugeot 1.6 L engine was used instead. The Omni 024 was renamed the Charger. The Plymouth Turismo was introduced as a companion entry for 1983, with the TC3 designation now discontinued.[1] Carroll Shelby developed a sporty version of the Charger later in the year, the Dodge Shelby Charger.
The transformation continued in 1984, with quad headlights now differentiating the Charger from its Omni origins, however the Shelby models continued to use the previous years front nose cap/bumper assembly. The Plymouth Turismo would share the same front end. Apart from the badging, both cars were identical.
For 1985, the Shelby (with its unique front end) and Charger names were shuffled to reflect the addition of a turbocharged engine. One new color was added for 1985 - black with silver stripes. Plymouth also got a version of the old Shelby Charger, reviving the Duster name as the Plymouth Turismo Duster. However, Plymouth would never get a turbocharged version of the Shelby Charger. Two turbocharged Turismos, using the Shelby front end, were seen at Chrysler headquarters with a 'Cuda Plymouth badge, but they were not put into production. They currently reside in a private collection. The previous high-compression 107 hp (80 kW) Shelby Charger engine was now an option on regular Dodge Chargers. For 1986, the mandated center high-mounted stop light was added, and the 96 hp (72 kW) 2.2 L engine made its way down to the base models.

You were asking about the Plymouth version - they were called Dusters. I owned an '85 Duster Turismo (non-turbo, manual) that looked an aweful lot like the kit body without all the frills of the Shelby. This kit stirs up memories - I may have to go pick one up

The Plymouth version was called the Horizon TC3 then transitioned to the Turismo name. I had an '84 Plymouth Turismo when I was in high school. It had the 2.2 high output and a 5 speed. It was red with burgundy velour interior. I had alot of fun with it but it wasn't very reliable.

I'm glad Chris that you pointed out how nicely detailed this kit is. MPC did indeed produce great kits. Far too many jump on the bash bandwagon based on negative opinions of others. I say build what you like, not what others tell you is a good kit. BTW, Monogram also produced a Shelby Charger kit. 1/24

Chris: the Plymouth FWD version of the Dodge Charger and the Dodge ONMI GLH ("Goes Like Hell"), was the Plymouth Horizon. It didn't have any engine options to produce high performance. Plymouth Division management seemed to emphasize economy toward younger families ( my brother traded in a 1970 318 Duster on a Plymouth Horizon that stranded his family 200 miles from home when he ran over a large rock that bent his oil pan. I had to rescue the four of them in my 1971 Chrysler Newport ! Can't say I was smarter ; I traded that Newport for a Volare Wagon😩 ! )

if your talking about rally cars 4 doors give easier access to the interior and any way better to wreck a 4 door

anyway this looks like a nice kit - great build thank you

Worked in the Chrysler Dodge Dealership when these cars came out never saw any with blue stripping or just a blue, they were all Shelby blue and silver the engines were all black with aluminum heads and aluminum transmissions some engines came with chrome valve covers and timing covers my brother bought one of the first ones that was delivered to the dealership it was a pocket rocket. I owned the Shellby omni with the turbo it was a torque steering sob.

  • @Wild-Dad
    @Wild-Dad 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I had three of these cars. I would have loved to have had the Shelby but when I investigated how much the insurance was, that idea was quickly squashed. My first was a Dodge O24 in the colour Blue you used. It had the 1.8 VW motor which was kind of weak. To make it look a bit more sporty, I set up my own stripe design for it. I masked the body and painted it up - it actually looked pretty good. My second was the Dodge Charger 2.2 which was a pretty quick car for a four banger. You compared it to a Chevy Chevette and Cavalier. This car as a 2.2 blew them away - I got over 250,000 miles on it till one snowy night killed it. My last was a Plymouth Turisimo - not such a great car. It was a used car and turned out to be a money pit.
The big seller for me was it’s cargo capacity. With the back seat down you could camp in it. You could put a 4x8 piece of plywood in it and close the rear hatch..

The gas cap on this car was black, not chrome. The steering wheel had a black grip and horn pad and the steering wheel spikes were a brushed aluminum. Turn signal stalk was black with a chrome knob on the end. Thats what I remember from the two 80s Chargers I owned. The engine wasn’t red. I think it was just a natural color. Maybe the block was painted Chrysler Corporate blue or even black. I looked at some pictures of 86 Charger engines to determine that. It was difficult to make out the block color.

Started watching looked like an awesome build, but the same music started playing. I love your channel, and I love watching your work, but the music distracted me from the build and I had to shut it off. I'm sorry. Keep up the awesome work. Please change the music.
You're doing an 80s car, maybe play some 80s hits.

Most TH-camrs use music from the YT music library because your videos can be removed for using copyrighted music…otherwise there’s always the mute button…

Can we make it a rule that just because the name Charger is on the box, doesn’t mean it can be painted Orange with an “01” on the doors?

Seems they were trying to copy the Fox body Mustang with that car.

They were ugly back then and they are now; front overhang looked ridiculous like pasted on for crash worthiness. The proportions were all wrong with tiny tucked in tires and wheels (the model is not accurate as a quick check on the web will show) What's next the Mitsubishi Challenger or 1978 Plymouth Sapporo? I'd like to say this is why Dodge will go out of business in a couple years (they have zero product to sell!!) but it was just one of many abuses of the names like the failed Viaggio was - aka Dart. But hey, if you made me sick it's because you as usual KILLED it, the color and build is unfortunately very good ! 👀
