    The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a range of automobiles produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division between 1961 and 1999. At its introduction, the Cutlass was Oldsmobile's entry-level model; it began as a unibody compact car, but saw its greatest success as a body-on-frame intermediate.
    Introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 line, the Cutlass evolved into a distinct series of its own, spawning numerous variants, including the formidable 4-4-2 muscle car in 1964, premium Cutlass Supreme in 1966, and outright performance Hurst/Olds in 1968, as well as the Vista Cruiser station wagon.
    By the 1980s, Oldsmobile was using the Cutlass as a sub-marque, with numerous vehicle lines bearing the name simultaneously. These included the Cutlass Calais compact, the midsize Cutlass Ciera, the Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and top of the line midsize Cutlass Supreme.
    The Cutlass was named after the type of sword, which was common during the Age of Sail.
    The new intermediate F-85 now rode a conventional body-on-frame chassis with a perimeter frame which it shared with the newly-introduced "A-body" Chevrolet Chevelle, and upgraded Buick Special and Pontiac Tempest. Wheelbase grew to 115 inches (2,900 mm), overall length to 203 inches (5,200 mm), and weight by more than 300 pounds (140 kg). Both the aluminum V8 and the Roto Hydramatic were discontinued in favor of a new cast-iron small-block V8 of 330 cu in (5.4 L) displacement and an optional two-speed Jetaway automatic transmission with variable-pitch stator. Buick's 225 cu in (3.7 L) V6 was the standard engine.
    The body styles of the previous model returned, and a new Vista Cruiser, a stretched-wheelbase (120 inches (3,000 mm)) version of the standard station wagon featuring a raised rear roof with tinted skylights and a fold-down, forward-facing third seat, debuted on February 4, 1964. The 4-4-2 model, derived from the BO-9 police package, was also introduced in March 1964 (costing $285.14 in 1964),[6] as an answer to the new intermediate muscle car market created by the Pontiac GTO that same year.
    Sales increased to 167,002 for 1964, not counting Vista Cruisers.
    Oldsmobile first used the Cutlass name on an experimental sports coupe designed in 1954. It rode a 110 in (2,800 mm) wheelbase, and featured a dramatic boat-tailed fastback roofline and stock V8. Its platform was similar to the compact F-85 introduced seven years later.
    For model years 1939 and 1940, Oldsmobile introduced the Oldsmobile Series 60 and Oldsmobile Series 70 which shared the GM A platform and GM B platform with Chevrolet and Pontiac models. The Series 60 was discontinued in 1948, while the Series 70 was cancelled in 1950. The division then offered multiple models using the Oldsmobile Series 80 and Oldsmobile Series 90 platforms during the 1950s. When the division decided to revisit offering a smaller platform again, they didn't return to the traditional naming convention of reintroducing the Series 70 and instead offered the new compact as the F-85, inspired by the North American F-86 Sabre fighter jet, and beginning a new tradition of using fighter jet names for their products, and taking advantage of the "rocket" marketing strategy started with the Rocket V8 engine. The United States Air Force did previously produce a research fighter jet called the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin but it wasn't placed into production.

    It was bought brand new as a family car. After five years, the eldest son gets the beat-up old Olds (?) while dad gets a new ride. As a viewer, I like to see videos of you making show models and beat-up cars, it's all good. As long as you keep having fun doing what you're doing, we'll be here to watch. Thanks for all your efforts Chris.

    Car dealers in my area had a outdoor new car show in 1964. I was 13 years old and my Mom and Dad stopped to see the new models. This Cut less convet. done in black with white interior was there. I tried so hard to get Mom n Dad to buy THIS instead of the station wagon, but just couldn't get the job done! Thanks for those memories! I going to buy this kit and build that black Cut less. Thank you for this video.

    Looks great brother, you absolutely crushed it on the details and crusting it up but it's still a driver. I love using the hvac metal tape for details, it's way to thick fine details but it is absolutely perfect for making damaged trim and for interior floors pans in stock cars, nascars, drag cars. Thank you for sharing your builds and keep em coming. Everyone keep yourself and love ones safe and healthy and remember to smile it's suppose to be FUN

    I dont know how. But I was literally halfway thru putting together this exact kit. With the same idea of having it be kind of a beater. Something you'd see parked at a swap meet. Than I just happened to find your video doing the exact same thing. But much much better. Really great kit. I took some steel rims from another kit to make it look as if it lost its hub caps. Still a way to go. But a great kit. Great video. Stay rad!

    If you look at the taillights very closely, you’ll be able to see the mold ridges on them, for the stock trim in the taillights. That rocker trim wouldn’t rust like you build the model, the body will rust out like crazy, but that rocker trim won’t rust. It’s made of aluminum. Other than that, you’re spot on, on the build, that I could tell. On the hood, you don’t need to be there. The firewall will hold up the rear of the hood.

    Looks like what Motor Trend Classic used to call a "tired runner". The kit of itself reminds me of AMT's '64 Impala; simple to build but lots of customising options which always makes them interesting. One disappointment is there is no up top for the convertible, but this is a kit I'll definitely look out for, and I'm feeling the urge to do a weathered version of one of the older cars in my collection.

    Fantastic job. I'm a '64 Olds guy, but all big 88's
    so upset, just ruined my candle apple blue paintjob on the Ford starliner I built. Tried using this "Quick Shine" floor finish product.

    Hello, I really love the channel, I built many models as a kid. I would like to ask a question. I was wondering if I could sponsor a build on your channel. I just helped my father purchase a 1968 RS/SS 396 Camaro that just finished a complete restoration. This is the car he purchased not long after he returned from Vietnam and met my mother. Of course, after myself and my sister came along the Camaro had to go in exchange for a family car. I heard about this car my entire life along with looking at the pictures, and now he will have it back. A lot of these old men put replica models of there car on the air cleaner for display at car shows. I think it would be amazing if he could watch you build his car on TH-cam and then display it this summer at the local events. I apologize in advance for putting a request like this in public comments but I don't know how to send a private message through TH-cam. If this is something you are interested in let me know how to contact you to work out the details on payment, I am willing to make this worth your time. I also can send a video of the entire car.
    Thanks
    Shawn

      Having driven an old rusted vehicle back in the day, my windows were always clean so I could see, I needed to drive it to work, etc.

    Wait how did you get that crackle affect on the hood like did you let the yellow paint dry then spray the blue or did you not let the yellow dry?

    • @13Dixiefried
      @13Dixiefried 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm gonna say that the yellow was still wet, when he sprayed the blue over it.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not really sure, that's why it's an accident. Both paint layers reacted poorly when laid down and cracked all over.
      Normally I'd strip it and try again but this time I left it and it looked cool.

    I want to build mine as the full custom except my kit is missing the ENTIRE ENGINE SPRUE.😟
    Only engine parts included are the twin chrome Judson Supercharger plenums.
    It did come with two interior sprues though.
    Emailed AMT to see if they can send me the missing parts.
