  • A grey, often drizzly day on the first day of the Foxfield Railways Summer Gala but as usual plenty of fine locomotive action. Locos working were;
    RSH 0-6-0ST ‘35’ (Norman)
    Avonside 0-6-0ST ‘Cranford’
    Dübs Crane Tank 4101
    Bagnall 2842 No.2
    'Whiston' (Running as 'Hurricane')
    Thanks to all involved at the railway for a great show

    Fantastic Austin , the opening shot had it all with the anticipation of the nearing locos , clag and Cranford seeming to want to pull the whole load on it's own !

    Nice conditions to make it just that extra bit challenging! The leading engine seemed to be taking most of the weight in the first shot. Absolutely fabulous sound at 10:00!

      Thanks, yes the weather definitely helped with some fine exhaust displays. Rather fortunate with the sound you mention as I'd left the sound setting at the higher level I use when further away from the line so I was lucky it wasn't too distorted

    The famous Foxfield Bank, just about the only place in the UK you can whiteness steam in action on this sort of incline . I have been lucky enough to take a few footplate trips up this bank in the late 1960s / 70s 👍 it’s an unforgettable experience long may it continue

    Drizzly? We had a beautiful day up here! Makes your smoke and steam effects very effective, though. Well done and hope you didn't get wet.

    In reply to Andrei's suggestion for the chimney on the Ex Bold Colliery "Whiston", I have found the article which I referred to in a previous reply. It can be found on the Industrial Railway Society website at www.irsociety.co.uk under the title 18" Hunslet, 0-6-0 saddle tanks - an article by HA Gamble dated 1969. Essentially the chimney was fitted to locos modified by Hunslet with a mechanical stoker and underfeed trough instead of a grate. The blast pipe was also designed by Hunslet and is similar to the Kyala blast pipe fitted to Ex LNER Pacifics, giving a somewhat soft steam exhaust. The idea being to burn off all unburnt coal gases before being ejected. The stopped back smoke being thrown out of the chimney and was designed to comply with clean air act. It was successful and around 18 locos were so modified. A pic appears in the article. The final comment from me is that the appearance of the loco leaving the lead Loco to do all the work (as noted by several correspondents) is entirely consistent with Hunslet blast pipe an soft exhaust, so the loco is actually working hard!! Sorry if this is a bit long winded, the engineer in me wouldn't let this mystery go! Do have a look at the article, it's very informative. Best wishes. Ken

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for finding this out Ken, I can well understand how you would want to find out more and I'll take a look at the article. When I've filmed 'Whiston' in the past I don't think she had that chimney dart so I wonder if 'Hurricane' did and for the sake of authenticity it was fitted it to 'Whiston' while she was masquerading as her sister loco. Whatever the truth of the matter is, they don't half make a nice noise!

  • @KenBrownekb71000duke
    @KenBrownekb71000duke 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing is guaranteed on these industrial lines is plenty of noise and steam and honest to goodness welly, and that's all in evidence on your super video Austin! I was trying to identify the green RSH banker with the strange looking chimney on the last clip as I'm sure I've seen it or similar locos elsewhere. Any ideas? Thanks for a spectacular show Austin! Best wishes. Ken

    • @acw71000
      @acw71000  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Ken. The banking loco was ex Bold Colliery loco 'Whiston' masquerading as 'Hurricane' for this gala. She does seem to have a different style chimney to other Austerities and to my ears has a softer blast than the leading loco but I don't know if there is any difference. Hopefully someone can come up with the answer. Hope you're keeping well.

      Is it one of those Giesel ejector devices?

    • @KenBrownekb71000duke
      @KenBrownekb71000duke 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AndreiTupolev I don't think so Andrei but I think there's a website dedicated to these locos, so I'll have a search for it. Ken
