    As the person responsible for creating this little critter I am very happy to see this kind of video. It certainly gives DMs a plethora of ideas for how to use the fragrant one in a game (since we have limited space for fluff in a book like this). And yes, it was inspired by virtually every intelligent slug creature in cinema and literature. Hopefully, you'll cover one of my other monsters in the book (I did about 65-70 of them).

    I was brainstorming new monsters recently and I came up with the Snail-tiger, a snail of the rough shape and size of a tiger. It's massive shell with multiple hooked spikes makes for both good armor and weapon. The head has two eye stalks jutting out on either side and a large maw of teeth.

    • @gozroc93

      You should look up what a tiger smell is in real life the way they attack is is pretty wicked and perhaps you could the colorations of the real life tiger snow in conjunction with the D&D attributes you would like to give it I don't know just throwing that out there as a fellow DM

    A fascinating idea. I think I could add one of these to my underdark campaign. I have a “frontier town” in the upper dark that has a lot of species and races from deeper parts of the world. It’s got arena fighting, narcotics dens, a crashed mindspider spelljammer, and, of course, slave pits. I think a chaotic evil or chaotic neutral fragrant one would fit in perfectly. Looks like I’ll give some of Kobold Press’ other works a look. Thanks AJ!

    There was an interesting book from Forgotten Realms I think it was called Innsfall?
    The Insect race (formians I assume) were mentally enslaving other races but could only control them as long as they were in sight range and not already distracted themselves. So these mixed bag of enemies would snap in and out of consciousness as they were fighting... and once they were dragged away from the influence they would admit not remembering anything for almost a week sometimes two...

    Always love the quality content you're putting out AJ! Always learning somethin' new!
    If you don't mind me asking, how do you go about selecting the art you utilize for your videos? I'm looking to start a channel about my style of DMing and sharing the copious amount of homebrew content i've created over the years. Would like to use some awesome art i've found online to help visualize some ideas but don't want to get hit with the infamous copy right strikes or anything. Any insights you might be able to share?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1. Always abide by the wishes of artists whose work appears in any of your videos 100%, I'd even say go 150% above and beyond to respect their rights and wishes, and when possible, work to promote their work and careers in everything you do. 2. Always list the artists' name along with their work where you can, google image search can be time-consuming, so I suggest source art images from sites where the artists are posting their own work, as opposed to Reddit or Pinterest where it is usually a copy of a copy of an image with no link to the original artist, but, take the time to search for the artist online. 3. All my interactions with actual artists over the years I have been making videos have been positive, any concerns of the artists have been dealt with, I have only had to remove one bit of art from a video in all this time. About 99% of comments that make accusations of your motives or rights to use artwork will be from people who have not had any artwork in any of your videos, or indeed, people who are not professional artists but instead have appointed themselves as 'advocates' for the artists. They mean well but are typically in need of more accurate information and experience. 4. If in doubt, always ask the artist, and respect their answers.

I got into RPG’s by just reading WoD and Exalted initially and, especially for Exalted; the depth of the setting always seemed sooo much more attractive to me than D&D. I feel like WotC’s books leave the feeling of depth lacking, and you have absolutely helped to broaden the worlds of D&D for me. My players are close to finishing Curse of Strahd and due to your influence they’re about to come into possession of a spelljamming vessel so we can explore strange new worlds and civilizations ;). Imagine a devil polymorphed into a farmer that leads you into his farm as a tour. He brings you and your team but most likely 1 or 2 party members. Showing off his barn there's several creatures your team haven't seen and they surrounded you as the farmer offers to pet them because they react to positive reinforcement. They turn out to all be disenchanters. The dm says roll for initiative and the devil changes back to his normal self and a trap floor opens up and brings up a fragrant going to charm the party and the disenchanters go to eat your magic items. Now the fight is on. How likely are you to survive the trap?

    Just curious, but does the Tome of Beasts II continue Kobold Press' thing where the CR's are probably lower than they would be in a WotC book? That's one thing that I've repeatedly noticed with their existing books.

    • @TheWonkster
      @TheWonkster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They actually use the table and make creatures that are appropriate for their CR. If you put four 4th-level characters against a chuul they’re going to absolutely stomp it, but if you put those same characters against a CR 4 from KP’s stuff, they’ll likely still win, but it’ll actually be a challenge.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheWonkster CR is fundamentally flawed as a basis for more than just very basic game planning, it makes an assumption about one side of the equation that I very, very rarely see actually be accurate from the get go, and as that side of the equation (the party make up and frequency of rest stops) is wrong, the other side of the equation is thus also wrong. This is why I rarely go into CR details on monsters.

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheWonkster I was trying to compare them to the WotC ones, pretty much all of the KP ones seem to be a bit higher than the WotC ones in the prior books.

    Me: I want to show my players that this undead-spawning giant clam is trying to gain divine powers. Hmmm... Kuo-Toa have divine flavor. And sleeping beholders create. Perhaps the clam imprisons some to focus that energy. It would be best if they were in a trance - a mind meld - like the myconids do. Like an evil myconid meld cone snail cocktail. Something that they can be liberated from, alive.
