The Swiss friend is speaking very clear standard German with an ever so slight Swiss lilt. Any German speaker would do well to speak standard German as clearly and concisely as he does.
He does a good job of speaking standard German though if you train only with Swiss it could be like learning French from a Quebecois. Every now and then you are going to baffle people with funny words.

I’m a C1 German speaker and I fully just mumble the adjective endings if I’m not sure and hope for the best
same sis as far as i'm concerned adjectival endings don't exist

I thin it's due to the fact that he's not scared to just go out and talk to people, a lot of people don't learn past a certain level because they don't go anywhere or talk to natives, they just learn it at home with no immersion.

SAME! I kept saying "NEIN" because it was pronounced as '9' in English. Plus the word means 'No' so it got me out of awkward situations. Shout out to 'NEIN'

I really love the fact that you're studying German. I feel like the language has such a bad image and is often portrayed like we're always shouting and being aggressive when we're really not - and it's such a beautiful language. Also I've never heard anyone say that people from German speaking countries are cool but I feel quite flattered. Mach weiter so, dein Deutsch wird wirklich immer besser! Liebe Grüße aus Wien 😀

I will admit German sounds aggressive to me and I’ve never enjoyed listening to people speak it. This is coming from someone who’s never been to German or seen it from anywhere outside of the TV. It’s such a nice language and now has me interested in visiting Germany or learning the language.
this comment!!!! my high school german teacher told me something that stuck with me: she said that the reason we think of german as a harsh language is bc most people have only heard it when it's being yelled by h*tler and n*zis to spread hate, when in reality it is a beautiful language. my german teacher spoke in such a soft voice that german always sounded cute n sweet when she spoke to us

it took me years. YEARS. to feel comfortable with the language, and i'm still not even fully fluent. not until i lived in germany for an extended period of time (like a year or so) did i start to feel comfortable calling myself a german speaker, and that was after studying it in middle school, high school, university, AND independently for ten (inconsistent) years... and spending two summers here. german is hard as hell and your german has improved so much; i'm really proud ^^ and keep it up!!
@@ChaoticTrack i can't remember much from my middle/high school lessons, but it made picking German up again much easier - remembering some vocab was easier, and sentence structure wasn't as big of a hurdle. it's going to take a little more effort to get a natural feel for the language when you're only starting now, but it's not impossible! you're only a few little steps back, and all that matters is the persistence to make up for them and carry on.

things that really helped me get a better feel for the grammar was writing, but also listening to a lot of German media. TV shows (in German, with German subtitles) are the best - you kind of learn like a baby would, from context and constant input. i'd suggest that instead of constant drills and exercises as you kind of get a feel for what structure and grammar sounds "iffy" when you're trying to formulate your own sentences.

Also feeling honoured to be called a "cool / chill" person based on the language I'm speaking😂. Keep going you're doing such a good job at literally every language you attempt (I am half french but sometimes I feel like your french is more french than mine if that makes sense? - Anyone else feeling that way?) . @@fio6291 I would recommend watching a lot of German TV. Also a neat trick is watching something that you know by heart (for me it`S Harry Potter) with German dubbing. so you`ll know what they`re talking about but at the same time you`ll be like " so that`s how they would say that in German!". Of course it`s great to learn grammar, but getting language input outside of class will only help you. Especially when you enjoy the learning process itself (watching movies, readiing books, etc)
Damon, of the languages you've been speaking & learning to speak (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and German) which have been the trickiest? Can you rank them in order of your proficiency? 😁

fio zack I am a native English speaker learning German, Portuguese, Spanish, and French. I would say the easiest is Spanish & French, then Portuguese (esp european, brasiliero português is much easier for me), then English, then German.
Portuguese & German are the most fun to speak though so I like practicing them. French is soooo boring to me now but learning it helps me learn other languages, and I default to a french accent in all the new languages i learn.
I am blessed to speak English natively because it is terribly difficult to me, my mind works differently in English vs other languages if that makes any sense 😂 y me encanta el Español, es muyyy hermoso 😍
XGOLDVN I think Portuguese is beautiful bc it sounds like French and Spanish combined! I used to not appreciate Spanish that much, but am realizing how much fun it is. Just Romance languages in general. Goes for Italian too. Love them all.

"Nehmen sie Kreditkarte an" is a phrase you don't really need for German restaurants or bars, because in 95% of all cases the answer is: "NEIN, nur EC-Karte." And that is a very different thing. So always bring cash if you go out for dinner, bars or clubs

8:06 The gender of the noun never changes. "Die Frau" (the woman): here the "die" is a definitive article because "woman" is female. When you have the sentence "Ich gebe der Frau Blumen" (I give flowers to the woman) the "der" is not a definitive article. We have the wonderful yet horrible thing to foreigners called the four cases in German. In this sentence, you have to ask yourself WHO are you giving flowers to and that is the third case "Dativ"; so the "der" is part of the Dativobjekt (object of the sentence). If you ask, however, WHAT is being done in this sentence/given to the women, then the answer is the flowers. This is the fourth case called Akkusativ so there is a second object in this sentence, the Akkusativobjekt (akkusativ object). Not sure this makes sense but hope it does lol.
Hey man! Good job. I'm like you with French. I'm from the US and I taught myself German and moved to Germany. My German is at a level where people don't know I'm not from Germany unless they spend a lot of time talking to me (Or I tell them). So... it's definitely possible! You just gotta get that 'Sprachgefühl' from using it and listening a lot. After a while, you'll realize that German is so "literal" that you reach a certain level where words you've never heard of before already make perfect sense to you. Viel Erfolg!

Girly vienna is the worst place to learn German the dialect is HEAVY. I would suggest cologne or hamburg

Well, I am from Austria and I can tell you that Austrian actually doesn’t exist and people in Austria speak German. However, people living in Austria like to point out that Austria isn’t the same as Germany. And because the German that’s spoken in Austria is a bit different than the German spoken in Germany, we sometimes say that we speak Austrian.

still, the Austrian dialect is different enough to confuse somebody who`s only learned mainstream German.
btw, I`m from Slovakia and I remember once I offered to help some foreigners who were having trouble in Bratislava. I might have asked them if they spoke German, but I distinctly remember them saying `no we speak Austrian` (as a half joke)

Oh, that's weird, I would never say that I don't speak German (not even as a joke). And did you end up helping them?
Pro tip: that “ch” sound at the end of “mich” or “ich” sounds like the “h” in “huge.” Also, don’t think of the grammatical gender as changing in different cases - the gender stays the same, it’s just the ending that’s changing! What awesome progress you’ve made!
The "ch" sound also exists in the English word "cute"! For German learners: Try saying "cute" a couple times and then recreate the "ch" when you're saying "ich" in German
@@suckfimon7006 No way. That's the most obvious speaking mistake that native English speakers make! (After getting their ü's and ö's totally wrong, but those sounds don't really exist in the English language, so that's understandable) Take the op's advice! Do not pronounce it with a "kj" or "k" sound. It should be like "hj" or "h" following an "e".

I would say it's more like the "sh" sound in English. Like "dich" is said like the English word "dish". so "ich" is "ish" and "mich" is "mish"
@@tslur that is pronounced like that in some parts of Germany -I am not a native speaker of German and I realize now that maybe you are- but if we're talking about Hochdeutsch, no "sh" in "ich", or no "sh" as pronounced as in wash.
As a german I can honestly say: Dein Deutsch ist wirklich gut😂man konnte alles verstehen, selbst wenn man mal der/dem/die/das oder so verwechselt.
(Nicht das Genus wechselt, sondern der Kasus - nothing is going from formale to Male, just the case is the problem😂)
So many TH-camrs that I watch have been sponsored by Rosetta Stone lately and I gave in and got it for myself as well. Been using it for over a month for Korean and Italian and damn, it's actually great. I don't expect to be "speaking" once I'm done, because I don't think you can truly learn how to speak without talking to natives, but I'll definitely be able to watch movies and "consume" all sorts of online content once I'm done, for sure. It also made me a lot more comfortable pronouncing the stuff, teaching my mouth how to make those different sounds, because duh, adult brain keeps telling you "nah bitch, this is wrong, this is not what you've been saying your entire life so far", except that's just how learning works and I'm so happy it forces me to say *all* the things.
If there's one thing I don't like it's that the website-version "deactivates" when it's not your active tab, so I can't really do things on the side (which is good for learning new things, but I like doing things on the side during repetition because I should eventually be able to understand the things without actively focusing on them, right?). The app versions work great for that though.
I will add though, I'd say unlike Duolingo or other free options out there, it doesn't feel so much like a game but actual learning. It won't always be fun, it will be frustrating at times, there are no constant pop-ups telling you you're doing great and activating your happy hormone processes like many gamified language options do. But damn, it is effective.
Unpopular opinion: I love the way german sounds

This was so interesting to watch!! My dad moved to berlin in the late 80s from england and never actually took a language course (he wishes he did now) so he basically just learned the language by ear, in contrast to your german learning expirience.
He is literally fluent now and understands most everything, I often speak with him in german, but the daaaamn articles and prepositions.... he still gets those mixed up all the time.
So I think even when you have a pretty good grasp on the language, the missing grammar base lines can sometimes make it seem like you don't to outsiders (which is kind of stupid but that's what i've noticed)

Damon admire your determination,you tackled the language in a short period of time.When you pronounce the word ich you say iš but you need to pronounce it ih.You have an accent of course, I had it when i first started learning Deutsch.The ich is the most noticeable so just work on that,it will get better overtime.

I found your channel through Ashley's recent Paris video and I've been so enchanted by your content ever since. You've helped me learn more about what I want in my life, like living in many places, and have inspired me to pick up Spanish again. But for real this time! I'm trying out Italian too. It's nice to just know random words in many languages. I haven't been feeling like I'm mentally growing since graduating highschool in May, and I'm glad I found you now instead of much later because I feel like I'll be using my time wiser.

I have learnt German in school. Now I'm back to learning it again through an online course. I understand your struggles with the concept of the sentence structure and also the artikel for each word. The struggle is real! But your progress is really good. Sehr fleißig!
