These maintenance/fix videos are great. I just spent a few days figuring out why I was low on storage and found purgeable files, had to force it to recalculate, etc. Anyway, more videos like this or other fixes to common issues are really appreciated. You’re hands down the most knowledgeable TH-camr when it comes to Macs
Thank you so much. My macbook pro m1 was draining so fast for the last couple of weeks. I couldn't figure out why. The problem was that the one of my applications created a heavy container that had energy impact of 3000-4000. So from now on, I'm checking the activity monitor)
These MacBooks keep getting more and more efficient to the point where with my M1 Air, I rarely worry about battery usage anymore, but it's good to know how to diagnose what uses the most power for those times I might be away from a charger or outlet for long periods. I really hope Apple continues on this path of making them sip power as it's great not to have to worry about it most times.
excellent video, thank you. this helped me diagnose why my mac would run out of power overnight while it was supposed to be sleeping (firefox was keeing it awake; i looked up the issue and found some settings to change)
@@macmost I am still not sure about best practices regarding charging. The advice I have found so far is to charge it when it gets low, or during long periods of continuous use. So for that reason I have kept it unplugged most of the time, including at night. I am curious how harmful it actually is to keep it continuously plugged in while it's at home. And I appreciate your reply! I have found your videos very helpful for getting comfortable with MacOS, especially the one explaining its file system.

Gary, very useful video. when it comes to my Mac, i don't pay much attention to the battery life/health. Mostly because right now I'm seeing that it is normal and I constantly charge the Mac to keep it at 100% either overnight or during the day. Keep up the great work & Happy Holidays!
Odd. I've never heard of that before. I wonder if it is a problem specific to that cable, or if other HDMI cables do it too. Does it happen even if the other end of the cable isn't attached to anything? Or, if the screen at the other end is off?
@@macmost I didn't test this, but I don't think so. When I put MacBook Air M2 into sleep through the iOS Ventura main menu command and I forget to unplug the Satechi dock connected to HP M27fw 27” screen through the HDMI cable, the battery is empty the next day.
@@fkurcik OK. Thanks. But question: If the MacBook is on your desk and plugged into the screen, why isn't it plugged into power at the same time? The screen needs power, so I assume there is a plug right there.
Sorry Gary, is out of topic. I would like to get your advice why I cannot unlocked my folder (in bin) so I can remove the folder and empty the bin. Before I delete to bin I did not unlocked the folders. After my folders was in the bin, I tried to open all the subfolders and select all and try to unlock but cannot because I can't even click on the "locked". Thanks in advance.
Maybe those are on an external disk that is not formatted for Mac? Try Control+click and Put Back for that folder and deal with it before you put it in the trash.
3:38 in the chat window: "Should I use Chrome or Safari?" Why are people still asking this question? Everybody should know that Safari is a browser optimised for Apple products made by a company that respects user privacy, whereas Chrome is coded to run on every device under the sun by a company whose business model is to sell your private data. Gary I think you should make a video about that topic.
Perfect timing, safari has been chomping through my battery when sleeping, now I see TH-cam is greediest webpage. when used at home is it better to leave plugged in or cycle battery?
Why aren't you plugging it in when it is sleeping? Have it plugged in all the time, except for when it is inconvenient. th-cam.com/video/WiOF2ZBYPdI/w-d-xo.html
Yes. Definitely do that. Why would you have it sitting there at night NOT plugged into power? Don't you want it charged up and ready to use when you wake up?
I have an odd issue that popped up recently. If I use for example podcasts, safari and pages at night, and then close the lid putting my MacBook to sleep (14 in pro), sometimes in the morning I’ll wake up and see podcasts, maybe eBay, and safari opened on a separate desktop page when I hit Mission Control. I’m sure I close them and check force quit before I put it to sleep to be sure, but they still come back at times while the Mac is sleeping. I’m sure this isn’t normal but is it common where there’s a fix to this?
So are you quitting Safari with those pages open? Why are you using Force Quit, instead of regular quit? Why quit at all? Note that if you have pages open in Safari windows and you quit, then relaunch Safari, they will reappear.
@@macmost no, I’m closing those pages then quitting safari. I’m not using force quit but since it’s been happening I’ve been double checking there because things come back when I wake my Mac, so I want to make sure I did actually quit them. It’s also happening with podcasts and eBay (app). After I quit them completely, they’re back on other desktops the next time I wake the mac
Thanks for going through this topic. Don't know if you remember me but I complained about my MBP draining. I'm glad my Optimized Battery Charging has finally started to work again. And all week my battery has sit at 80%, and that's a good thing since I use it like a desktop computer. But as you said to leave it plugged in overnight, but I have it plugged in all day already so by night I think it makes sense to unplug for the night. It's there a way to just keep it sleep and still maintenance from happening? Nowadays, I just shutdown at night because of the Power Events that I think is waking the MBP 4/5 times per hour so forget it. In the logs, I think the Bluetooth and SDXC is not giving the OS a rest also. And since when turning on the Mac takes forever? With the "reopen windows.." toggle you can resume what you're doing less than 30 seconds anyways!
Why does it make sense to unplug it at night? Just leave it plugged in unless it is inconvenient in some way. Just close the lid and let it sleep while plugged in.
@@macmost Because I have it plugged in all day from say 10am-10pm already when in use. Sounds kinda crazy to me to keep it plugged in 24/7. Again, you could turn on the Mac in no time, and with the rise of electricity bills in France, makes sense to me to shutdown anyways.
@@nuj427 YES. Keep it plugged in 24 hours if that is convenient. There's no reason to arbitrarily unplug it half the day. Let it sleep, power connected. It won't use much electricity while sleeping.
Don't "manage" it at all. macOS will do that. Leave it plugged in and asleep while not using it. When using it, if it is convenient to leave it plugged in, then do so. But if not, then use it on battery during those times and plug it back in at your earliest convenience.
I always notice that Safari (with tabs opened) consume the most power and memory. I wish Apple do something about this. Safari is supposed to be more power efficient and better than Chrome.
Look at the specific pages in those tabs. Apple can only do so much to minimize the impact if the pages are in fact using a lot of processing power to update, run scripts, animations, etc.
My apps are all closed. No usb dongle, no sd card. When I closed the lid and after hours the battery drains 25% per day. Means 4 days it's 0% Apple has not fixed it. When I bought it on February the Macbook lasted weeks with closed lid. Now no longer.
