Ford Truck is Ford Tough in Mr. Majestyk

  • A pair of 1968 Ford F-Series Pickups were used in the 1974 movie Mr. Majestyk starring Charles Bronson, the late Linda Cristal, and Al Leiteri. At least one of the two trucks was seriously abused - but they were still kicking ass at the end! That's "Ford Tough!" Some of this scene was used in a Ford truck commercial a couple of years later (1976) and in that commercial it states that the truck was NOT modified.Link to video of commercial- • Ford Pickup Trucks 'Mr...

Had a truck just like it and those "Twin I Beam" front axles
were impossible to break. You might bend the frame but
still couldn't break 'em. In those days "FORD TOUGH"
meant something. Many of the 60's Ford pickups are
still going strong, although prized by collectors now.

GooglFascists l still have my 69 swb f-100 after 40 years. Yeah they are tough trucks. I've never had any problems with the front tire alignment. I replaced the kingpins , tie rods about 20 years ago, and they are still good. The kingpins had a little wear on them and the tie rods were still in good condition, but since l had a considerable discount on all auto parts l decide to replace them. I was pleasantly surprised by how little wear the old parts had. But l take care to maintain this old truck. Many people complain about twin l beams, esp. The chevy guys, but their ball joints were falling out alot . l work as a mechanic for over 34 years and l replaced many many ball joints on GM trucks and few kingpins on ford trucks starting in 63. I think they are better now though.

Bronson movies never had huge budgets. They chose to use Fords because they could only afford a dozen of them.
Had they used GM or Dodge pickups, they would’ve had to buy about 50 of each, to film only part of this scene! 👍🏻

Really? Stop with the BS. They would have done the same with any of those makes. The tough scenes would have been shot using a 3/4 or 1 ton single rear wheel truck just like they did with the Ford in this movie because they hold up to the abuse. Then for the rest of the scenes they use the original half ton because back then they were much easier to drive than the bigger trucks were. .

Great scene, I had forgotten how good this chase was. Paul Baxley was the stunt co-ordinator, Paul had a very long career going back to doubling William Shatner in the original Star Trek series! 5 years after this movie Paul started working in Hazzard County and was the stunt co-ordinator on 120 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard. Oka7 0:27 you can see the front driveshaft, meaning it's a 4wd. Then 1:52, looks like I-beam type. They use at least two trucks, so one may be 4wd, the other 2wd. I notice I don't see 4wd hubs most of the time, not sure if those would fit under the hubcaps or not.
(Edit: nevermind: I'm thinking that's actually the radius rods I'm seeing, not the driveshaft. So it's a 2wd.)

Trucks today have to many components made of weaker light weight aluminum that snaps under that kind of shock load. You might bend the living bejeesus out of those suspension components but you would still be mobile. You were more likely to have bent the frame before snapping the suspension in those trucks.

My best friend's daddy had a 1967 F-100. After he saw that movie, he thought HE was Charles Bronson!!!!
I vividly remember him picking me up to go over to his sister's house one day. Next thing I know he cuts down a dirt road that I didn't know.
I said I thought you were going to your sister's??? He said I am. WATCH THIS!!
Next thing I know we're doing 80 down this dirt road. Dust going 30 feet in the air. Rocks popping off the bottom of the truck and off the drive shaft. I am hanging on for dear life--no seat belts. I can feel the truck fish tailing. He's just laughing like a hyena and keeps on going.
We meet cars and they disappear in the cloud of dust.
We pass by this house sitting on the side of the road and people are flying inside shutting doors and windows. We covered the house in dirt.
I told him that he'd better get his ass to his sister's house and hide this damn truck because they have done called the law on our ass!!!
He for once listened and hid the truck in their chicken house.
Thirty minutes later the sheriff's deputies came riding by wanting to know if we saw a white Ford truck.
I said yeah! It went that way like a bat out of hell putting dust 50 feet up in the air!
They left and I looked at him and said told you so!!! He just laughed! His sister carried us home and later that night I brought him over to get the truck!

It's owner maintenance. In some of the larger cities, if you leave your truck in the right neighborhood, if it's still there in the morning, there's a good chance it will be repainted for you. It won't be a complete paint job and it may not be all the same color. Custom lettering is no charge.

I can spot at least two for sure. But both have rifle racks. One has a rust or brown primer spot on the top of the passenger side cab. This is the truck that starts the chase scene. When she makes a left back onto the highway it is a different truck. The brown spot is gone and the front tires are wider. Note how when he takes over driving both headlights are intact. From this point either headlight (but never both) will be missing and then be intact. They must have repainted the front on one looks like they sprayed the amber parking lights yellow. Also, appears to be 3 on the tree and can hear him let clutch out so that also means it's a 6 cyl.

I totaled the Dodge two days later. The F100 lasted for years having the shit beaten out of it off road, lighter front end means no axles to break when it’s bouncing and jumping. He kicked the broken windshield out one day and drove around for a month before getting pulled over, 50$ fine back in those days, neither door would open so we would climb in and out through the windshield, we got some funny looks from people so that made for good laughs and stories later on. Ford used scenes from the movie in a very short lived commercial and stated it was a totally unmodified 1968 pickup. It seems that the lawyers decided that the performance was an implied warranty. (there was the "don't try this at home" disclaimer on the bottom) but that was not enough I guess. If you watch the closing scene in the movie, you will see the truck slightly "crabbing" as they did snap a rear leaf spring jumping the stock truck 30 feet in the air at ~40 mph. Still "Built Ford tough"

It's got a 390 ci . which is what it came with .030" over, flat top pistons so it's 9.5:1 instead of 8.4:1, windage tray, Wolverine Cam, .484"/.510" 274°/284° 204°/214° @ .050", Cloyes TruRoller timing set, stock heads and distributor, Holley Street Dominator Intake (open plenum/single plane), Holley 600cfm Vac. Sec., Hedmann Headers, Flowmaster Stage 3 Mufflers. C-6 trans. -1 shift kit and other modifications. Stock rims. Still has the working AM radio in the dash. I added a box with a am/fm cassette (really old school), 2 speakers that sits on the trans. hump. It's not that heavy about 3900 lbs. It barks the tires on 1-2 shift. And I still get the same gas mileage as I did without all those modifications and A LOT more horsepower and torque. Manual steering, power drum brakes, 9" drive axle, 3.50:1 ratio.

Sounds like a really nice powerful and tough truck, 67-72 is my favorite bodystyle.Ive owned it since i was 17, 9 years in august. It was my first vehicle Based on factory documentation my truck weighs in around 4300lbs. My truck has 4:56 gears, dana 44 3000lb front axle,6800lb gvw dana 60 rear, mildly built 360, with 390gt sized valves, speedpro forged pistons, edlebrock performer plus, holley 600cfm manual choke carb, np 435 transmission, heavy duty rear brakes, which got you a lever to operate the rear brakes and 12x2 and a half rear brakes. Manual brakes, manual steering. Gauges instead of lights, it originally was a previous year color based on evidence, it looks similar to antique bronze, i havent confirmed the exact color but when i restore it im going to paint it the original color. Its a blast to drive rides like a tank, but its a barebones no questions asked kind of truck which is why i love it. Its not really set up for tire shredding and the 2 to 3rd shift is a pretty significant rpm drop. But it has the granny low and itll pull a stump out of the ground.

Bought a 72 short bed in 99. Paid 1100. Drove it for the next fifteen years as it rusted away. Every one made fun of me. "Sanford and son" and all the works.
It is my tool. Not just a fashion piece. But a few years ago I wanted it to be all one color.
After around six weeks of doing my best to straighten it up, and whatever I could.... but not much. Not the inside of the bed or inner fenders or anything. Just one color was a success.
So, finally shot it. Ya shoot late if it's going to be outside. No bugs after two usually.
Just as I laid out the clear..... it rained. Just a few minutes. Just long enough to ruin it all.
To this day I feel bad about cursing at the old man upstairs. I thought I had done a lot of work. But that's when He he really showed me.
As I begin to take it all back down, I chipped a piece of paint on the inner fender inside the engine bay. That chip was the one. That led to the Nother. That eventually took three years.
I had completed everything except for the outside from fender to fender. I was exhausted because I had basically done a truck twice.
The inside of the bed was something I was not prepared to do. The fenders and the rails were smashed flat. Took about six months for the inside of the bed. People quoted me $6000 for the inside to bed.
One night I looked up some nitrous oxide kits after watching some videos. Usually I get a coupon for the product after I bought it. But, the next day I got a half off coupon.
I had charged all of the supplies to my credit card and the points paid for the kit.
I said that on the workbench and did not open it until the truck was complete.
Prior to restoring it, I had not heard of street outlaws or of farm truck or of Frankenstein.
It's not as bad as those trucks. But it's fine.
The farmer made me shake on a promise to paint it the original color.
    Paint code: #7 Anti-Establish Mint
I love the anti-war color for Vietnam. It is supposed to be the color of grass I've heard.
Marshall 330 hp 302 cubic inch, which it came with a 302, and I figured better gas mileage. I put an automatic in it. Wish I wouldn't have. No fun. The idea was so I could put my arm around my wife. But, she hated it. Rode one time in it. Divorced.
But it has a c6 in it now. Robbed 43 hp. Gained torque, but not worth loosing that clutch.
150 shot and a set of cutouts.
The wheels were the most expensive and took another year to save up enough to feel comfortable charging the rest. It was worth it in the end. The spacing and stance look great. A little wait to get them. But who cares. My buddy kinda cheaped out on his Chevelle. He did an excellent job on a '69. Looks so beautiful.
But the wheels look so damn wrong. It's sickening to me. I feel for him and I know how hard it is to get around to something like that again.
The process is more than I would probably do again, but I can hardly remember any of it.
It's just metal, and we can make a bunch of them, but it has also enabled me to meet a lot of friends. Classix are the best icebreaker. People don't even notice how they come right up and talk to you.
He crosses so many social boundaries. Elderly people and young, dark and light skin, boys and girls....
And you can't just go to the store and buy one.
What's it worth to me? 1100$ and the restore. That number is big. But the hours in it are too many and not worth my family.
I've never put a price on it.
When one of my good friends asked me how much I would take for it, I asked him how much he gave for the brand new side-by-side in his driveway. He said 17,000. I don't Believe my truck is worth that much. That number seems huge. But there's no way I'm trading it for a side-by-side I can go down to the store and pick up right now just with credit.
Are used to be millions of them, the crusher got so many. I took it to one car show with the kids and looked around. I was surprised on the amount of attention it received. I was upset that no one appreciated the Mach one setting next to it. I love the Mach ones. They must be worth five times as much of the truck.
I was surprised to see that much attention. But what I realized is, so many people have a story about their old Ford truck.

I bought mine '68 f100 390, in 1996, my son wasn't even walking yet, he's 21 now. I still have the truck. I got it for $800 did the valves $300 or so, months later one snapped off. Did the whole motor, cam, headers, 9.5:1, intake, 4 bbl. $2000 Then C6 went out, rebuild w/ shift kit $500. Slight loss of coolant constantly, and knocking. Pulled pan, bearing caps looked okay, hairline crack in block. Had to get another one swap all the parts over. You mentioned '69 Mach 1 I have one of those also 351W all stock. Had it since '87 except for 2 months when someone else had it. got it for $2200. I just wanted a fastback. I didn't even make a lower offer I knew it was worth double then. Spent 1-1/2 years getting it to look stock, painted, stripe kit everything. Then it got stolen. I heard it start, looked out and there it went, worst feeling ever. Two months they took what they wanted Cops found it in an alley. People sleeping inside. They lost all their stuff. I felt worse for them even though my engine, seats, wheels, new tires were gone. Spent 7 months getting it back together. Every day off 7 months hunting for parts. A lot harder when you have to do an engine and you have NOTHING. No block heads, manifolds, brackets, hoses, cables, wires. Finally got it going again runs good but the 390 truck will walk off and leave it. Last name is Johnson too.

I love these old movies,One minute the truck has a headlight, next minute its back in..Just like the passenger hub-cap! And at the begining the truck has a Black steering wheel, and at the end its Blue..So several trucks used in this move!

I read somewhere they said they used two. One has a white grill the other it's yellow one has a rifle rack other doesn't.

    • @snowrocket

+MrBikeguy99 Yes, 2WD, but notice almost every shot has the truck going level or downhill with a reasonable amount of momentum. Still, it's an impressive chase scene.

      My ‘16 f250 4wd does.
Not really mine, my jobs truck.
It actually has a 4wd stick you pull back and forth and manual locking hubs , and a rubber floor.
      Like the olden days.
It’s shocking that it’s a real working slobs truck.
Not sure about the newer trash.

    twin I-beam suspension.

    • @snowrocket
      @snowrocket 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+69roadr Yes, otherwise genericly known as a swing axle. Simple, inexpensive, strong, but crappy geometry. I think the last vehicle in production for consumers to use that had a swing axle was the recently discontinued Ford Econoline van.

I'll take a poor geometry swing axle I Beam suspension any day that can take a real world beating like these trucks took and keep on ticking. If there's one thing Ford is good at, it's pickup trucks. Especially 50 years ago.
