I was reffered to your channel by Waylon Wire, and was very happy with what you are putting out. While I was stationed at the Cold Region Test Center in Ft. Greely AK. way back in 94-96 I did see -80 a couple of times. All of this brings back memories. The accuracy of the things you are showing are right on the money. If you have not lived it you have nothing to compare it to, so many people just do not have a clue. Just listening to the engine laboring, trying to turn the input shaft on the transmission with that frozen oil. Choking down 200 horsepower that should tell you something, like it might be COLD !! Now i have to watch the rest of your videos. Thanks

Think on this for a second its very interesting. With old cars like the model T, when it would get that cold out, what you would usually end up having to do is start a wood fire then gather the hot coals and set them under the engine to heat up all that oil in there.
This guy can't even read his own thermometer and even then its accuracy comes into serious question. Exaggeration is par for the course on the internet.
I call bullshit on your claimed 80 below in Fort Greeley. I've lived in Alaska for close to 70 years and you are one of the people who you accuse of not having a clue. Quit exaggerating. I've seen colder than 55 below in Fairbanks in the 1970s on a properly calibrated and certified thermometer used properly. Minus 60 or colder is cold enough no need to make sh#% up to gain internet street cred.

@@duanehenicke6602 it's why all my work on rigs stops until spring, I know what it's like and I don't got the hands for it (even with deerskin mitts and under-layers and chemical packs). This guy is a beast.
Especially morons in the lower 48. Even in cold weather cities for some reason people think 5°f is cold. Well here in the lower peninsula of Michigan it is, but not compared to the U.P it does get colder. -55°f is way colder then anywhere in Mich. I do know Minnesota gets cold as does parts of the Dakota's. But Alaska and the Yukon of Canada are a different world. I am smart enough to know when I have no right to be adding my two sense. Here in Manitoba a lot of the garages from the model T era had a crawlspace under the car, you would draine the oil and would take it in for the evening

Some comments: Years back I had a similar truck--360 V8, 4 speed. I started it without a block heater down to -40 F. several times, but it was a hard start. Some tricks I learned from the old-timers--in sustained subzero temps, change the gearbox, transfer case, and differential oil to 50W. Also, when starting the truck in those frigid temps, once one gets the truck to stay running with the clutch engaged, put the transmission in, say, 2nd gear and the transfer case in neutral, then engage the clutch. That will spin the gears in the transmission and transfer case and warm the oil up in them after a little while. Always keep the fuel tank topped off to prevent condensation in the tank and help prevent fuel line freezeups. In those temperatures with that engine, never expect to get more than about 4-6 mpg in winter. For the record, I don't miss those carbureted trucks in cold weather--fuel injection, properly operating, is a godsend in frigid weather. Finally, it's the unfrozen moisture in snow that binds it--the colder the temperature, the more powdery and non compactable the snow is. That is why the ads of AWD and 4WD vehicles driving through drifts are always filmed in frigid temperatures--where the snow is not compacting into "Sierra cement" in front of the vehicle.
Same - AND make sure it's blocked and the emergency brake is on. No fun coming out to see if it's warmed up and it's down in the pasture saying Hi to the cows!
@@mishkajb Yes, so true. In such cold temperatures, the transmission and/or transfer case oil is thick enough to turn the gearbox into a sort-of torque converter--the oil spinning gears that actually are not meshed together. On many occasions, I could start my pickup (with a block heater) in -40 to -50 F. ambient temperatures, engage the clutch in neutral, and the truck would power itself down the driveway at 5 mph in neutral, with just the thick transmission oil spinning the gears. The advantage of putting the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in , say, 2nd gear, is that the transmission gears could spin without sending any torque to the driveshafts and axles. And, blocking is preferable to engaging the emergency brake. I've seen plenty of emergency brakes freeze in the applied position and breaking them loose can be a real bear.
@@rockymountainjazzfan1822 yup had a mazda where it would basically drive forward a few feet in -40 or stall out when you let out the clutch because of that torque converter effect. Had to let it out REEEALLL slow for every deep freeze start.

FYI: Single Grade SAE 50 is about the same viscosity as Single Grade 90 weight gear oil. Redline GL-5 75W-140 and 75W-90 gear oils both poor down as low as -49F.

Wow!!! This takes me back to hunting in New Brunswick, Canada about 30 years ago. The guide service, Ron & Dwayne Slipp used these Ford Highboys to take us out to the camps in logging country. Not modded up and bare bones but that truck took us down trails of 1-2 feet of water and through mud with those tall 36" tires. Ron swore by them and said they were the best trucks that he ever used for his business. Old School and Proud Of It!!

In 1936 the coldest day in North Dakota was -60 on February 15. That same year in Steel ND was also the record high at 121 degrees. Now that's an awesome 181 degree difference!!

I just love that old truck she is a runner for sure, I wanted an old truck for years to work on and play with. I am 50 now and disabled from the trucking industry. My wife passed away in 08, and my heart went with her, I have a pace maker since and many other heart issues. ❤️

Keep ur head up, 50 is too young, and I am extremely sorry for your loss of your wife. I'm 45, and I couldn't imagine losing the woman I love that way. It's bad enough when u lose her to divorce. It may sound crazy, but get that truck for you and work on it a little at a time. Just having something to occupy your mind and time will help give u a sense of purpose. You are not dead bro hang in there with your wife in your thoughts, but don't become consumed with negative feelings. She's in a better place, I'm sorry, Idk what she died from, so I apologize. But u will see her again. I truly believe that. 🙏

Thank God I still think that around zero is cold. You guys are tough up North, BUT you also show that the old Ford F250 is a tough old truck that was built to work in all kinds of conditions. Thanks again for showing what COLD really is and what hardships early settlers went through to develop this type of living conditions.
I live in the coldest city in the lower 48 and everything I see and hear checks out. Obviously a legit video. I can tell by the crunch of the snow. Been fighting the same battles here the last week.
I am curious as to what is considered to be the coldest city in the lower 48. Last week ( I am in northern Alberta ) it was down to -49f the coldest morning of the stint of cold last week and I noticed in one location in the NWT it was -62f ( actual temperatures, none of this impressing people with wind chill effect they like to spew on the tv ). I didn't have to go anywhere so I didn't start anything.
Here in Minnesota the coldest I remember we had in recent years where I live was -34 f and the two newer vehicles wouldn’t start but my older 5.3 L Silverado started and got me to work that day.
@@grantgemlo7348 Different engines and fuel systems certainly can make all the difference, and the condition the battery is in as well as the battery connections and the battery cable sizes. Unfortunately the newer the vehicle it seems the worse ( in general ) they are for having a natural draw on the battery at all times due to the insane amount of computer controlled everything. In some cases they can be so bad that they will not start after sitting for two days and that is pathetic, and the battery life in years is awful as well. Of course engine oil viscosity, even the type of power steering oil that is used ( for my older GM pickup there is a special Canadian spec oil that is thinner, the average person would never realize such a weird thing like that )

You know it's cold out when you try to let the clutch out and it dies. Had a 79 plow truck and it did the same thing but it would start eventually. 👌✌🤘

Has nothing to do with it being carbed.. the the mufflers. The resonators on new cars built to p urposely make them quiet.. otherwise theyd sound the same

@@BackyardAlaskan Damn that was cold, here in England were I Iive it was minus 11 degrees centigrade (about 12 degrees fahrenheit) and that felt cold! I have to say those old pickups are a lot more stylish than todays offerings.
I am impressed with all your material especially ford trucks love the old high boys i am from north east P.A. 68 years old and have owned 20 ford trucks 13 were 1979 or older and 5 Broncos. I find it truly amazing that a young man like you is so interested in all the material you put on you tube keep it up cause its a pleasure for an old baby boomer to watch you in action .If you get anything out of my comments just remember there are only two people in the world those of us who drive Old Ford trucks and those who wish they did.

Impressive! The coldest I've run across here was minus 21°F.
I was surprised, with the air being still that day it didn't seem that cold - and I understood why people had to be TOLD to cover up, by the time one would feel the cold some ears and the tip of the nose would be frozen solid.
My (at the time) brand new '96 F150 was the only thing in the lot that would start and only my remembering to hold something with EFI to the floor if it didn't start right up made that happen.
In this vid, I'd be surprised if the newer, Fuel injected trucks started at all.
Once the Ford lit, the power steering fluid was thick enough that the pump was in bypass until I slowly turned the wheels back and forth, just a little further each time.
I was surprised the ether and the propane tank kept enough pressure to work as long as they did for you at more than -50°F.!!
Another surprise was that she didn't flood using the choke and all the throttle pumping being that cold.
My old IH HATED the choke and much fuel when it was dead cold (-10F. or colder).
Too bad you didn't think to show that the antifreeze was nearly frozen slush to begin with.
Down here in the lower 48, there's plenty of us that would nearly kill to have that old beast down here. There aren't many honest to God, tough from bumper to bumper pickups down here (MI), even half of the one tons - I don't care what anyone says.

I love that truck . Reminds me of my '72 F100 Custom I had back in '88-'91. It was baby blue/white top with a 352 Police Interceptor. I miss my Ford.

I have one coming up for sale this summer, 1971 Highboy, fe360/390, 4sp that runs, was going to make my last mud truck but changed plans.

Makes my -20 in northern Wisconsin look like shorts weather. I can’t imagine the struggle of a guy trying to get to work in the morning who has to start a fire under there oil pan.
My dad has a 1979 Ford F100 with a 302 2 barrel. I wished it was 4 wheel drive but it's not and I still love driving it. I love old square body trucks. Thanks for showing us around and hopefully everything goes well and people and pets stay safe and warm
My family had exactly that same setup as well with just the rear drive and I think it was a 4 speed plus overdrive. Lol I remember as a teen driving my friends around in it and I would purposely shift from 2nd to overdrive and the truck would shutter and shake. Lol those were damn near impossible to kill.

-55 is no joke!! That was the lowest recorded temperature ever here in the Eastern Oregon high desert. Some areas around me hit -22 a couple nights ago. I always plug my trucks in during these cold events. Awesome video!! It was interesting seeing your warm up routine. I thought for sure you would put hot ashes in a pan under the engine, LOL.....
A friend of mine years ago put charcoal briquettes under his mother’s old car to heat the engine up to go to work - the old oil on the motor started the car on fire 😮
Same for this year, up here in Umatilla it got pretty good for the past few days but now its lettin up a bit
@@anormalyoungster3661 -- I remember when the Columbia River froze over above McNary Dam, and icebergs floating down the river through the Gorge. Multnomah Falls was frozen solid. Been a long time since I've seen sustained cold like that around these parts. However that was routine back in the early 1900's. We had 2 feet of snow just 2 days ago with minus temperatures, now it's melting and 40 degrees outside, LOL......

I had a 1970 F-250 with the 360 FE engine, it didn't like starting in Minnesota winters. I've personally seen -50 and can't imagine -55 feeling much colder. Your video reminded me of that truck in the winter. Thanks for sharing!
I’m in yooper mi, we have many winters with -55°F … I worked out in the shit for many many years… I also lived in Montana where it usually got -45 - -65°F… from working in the cold, I have learnt that you’re not gonna be cold for long, cause after an Hour you’re Numb.
My goodness I am humbled. I will never complain about the cold of Nevada again.

I've done a lot of work with a 74 f250 with a 390 full of 1980s crower parts. I bet I've had 30,000 lbs behind that thing. 1st gear, low range, wide open throttle, just making it up the mountain with nothing to spare. That old 390 would get hot, & even start backfiring, but it never let me down. Always cooled off going down.
I just hope you didn't have to go down the hill with 30,000lbs
The coldest I’ve ever cold started a car was about -35 a few years ago in the Fairbanks area. Subaru Forester with the 5MT, I wasn’t expecting to need to go anywhere that day so it hadn’t been plugged in. Went out, turned the key on and let it sweep the gauges and prime the fuel system, and cranked it. It wasn’t happy at all, but after about ten seconds it fired up and I immediately stalled it by letting the clutch out. Fired it back up, did the clutch shuffle and once I was able to let it out all the way went back inside and let it warm up for a good 20 minutes. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to start without being plugged in for at least 45 minutes, but I figured it was worth a shot anyway. I admire your dedication to not plugging the block heater in, I would have taken one look at that thermometer and grabbed the extension cord.

In northern MN yrs ago at -38 F. at my cabin, I brought out pails of coals from my wood stove, laid it under my oil pan for 45 minutes and that made that all the difference. Cranked very well.. Fired right up.
I just watched a guy try to start a truck for 20 minutes and was thoroughly invested the entire time even though it wasn't a vehicle revival video!
You're thinking is backwards on the snowbanks though. It actually has to warm up a bit so the snow can get some humidity to bond together. It's so cold even the humidity is frozen out of the air! That climb was hilarious though lol.

Great vid buddy. That old 360 sounds strong. I can relate to the struggle, started the the 77 low boy 250 yesterday, (76 highboy needs a coil). didn't struggle as much as you. Was around 15 degrees Fahrenheit love them old fords
I had one with a 390fe and I’ll never forget how bruised my chest, ribs, stomach were when changing the massive intake that is also part of the heads with pushrods passing through. Good times. Didn’t help that it had 38”s with a 8” lift either lol. And no pillows and blankets on the core support didn’t help. Dirty ole bastard

you are bring back many memories of my time working in the auto Craft shop on Ft. Greely in the winters of 1973 and 74. When I got out of the Army, we drove out on January 5th and slept on our cars all the way home to lower 48. 70 below when we left.

I love the total lack of background noise. It has been said there are two times during the year that it gets like that. The dead cold of winter and the hottest part of the summer in the wilderness, when everything is hunkering down for survival.
This looks just like my fathers old truck when I was a kid! same color body and grill brings back some of my most memorable moments with him thank you.

My first ride was a 70 F100 4wd with the 300 straight six. I loved that truck. I got a kick out of the rotted floor. Mine also fared the same fate. Great video.
‘74 F100 2wd 460 v8. The exhaust ended below the cab, so the stereo speakers that were sitting on top of the dashboard were not useful. I knew that sometimes I would spin the rear tires, so I was careful. Turns out that most of the time I was. Just couldn’t tell, between the loppy engine, bouncing ride, along with the whole experience. The sad part is that I had it for a month.
That's a great old truck and a testament towards durability. I live in New England and about 30 years ago it got down to about 40 below wind chill, my truck wouldn't start so my uncle told me the old school method. Built a huge fire with cord wood and shovel the coals under the truck, long as short it worked 👍 I loved your video and I wish you and your family a great New Year 🎉✌️🇺🇲

I used to own a rusty 1973 F250 Highboy with a manual transmission like yours. I parked it in Minneapolis and it would start after sitting 1-2mo in the winter without being jumped. Amazing old truck. The coldest I remember starting it up was only about 0F though, so nowhere near your -50F.

Great video! The most difficult part is getting gasoline to vaporize at those temps. And if you think 5W-30 doesn't drip off the dipstick at -50 then you can imagine what the 80 or 90W gear oil will be a hard grease block n the transmission which is why the engine stalls when you let out the clutch.
I have a 69 Ford F100 with a 240 inline six that my Dad bought new and I learned to drive in. Still all original and runs well.
As long as it was in a good state of tune and had a good battery, it would cold start at -35 to- 40 but that is pretty much as cold as it gets here in Manitoba, Canada. Much easier to just keep them plugged in!

Subscribed. Alot of people don't realize how brutal these temps are. Although I've never had -50 unless with windchill. Minus 40's aren't unusual here. Best starting diesel truck I've ever had was a military blazer with a 6.2 diesel. -42, crank right to life. No plug ins for the block heater in the bush. 24v starting system was the key there. But don't think the heat was ever going to work. And sitting at an idle, the thermostat would close again because there wasn't enough heat. As for best starting carb truck, a 73 Jimmy with a 250 six. Never let me down either. I always thought because the straight sixes had higher manifold vacuum than a V8 from the same era is what helped them start better. Pulls the mixture into the cylinders faster with less cranking was my theory. Now I've learned my lesson and I usually stay inside when its that cold unless I have to go into work. Nothing wants to work, vehicles made weird noises that make you think they wanna break in half, your tires stay square, things break easily, weird electrical gremlins show up etc etc Cheers
I had an 83 Suburban 6.2 and it would start no problem at minus 20 with no preheat other than cycle glow plugs a couple of times.
I lived in Alaska we had 60 below in the interior for a week I really like this video
No truck born today will ever endure and last as many years as this truck has.

I bet that oil pump rod coming off the distributor was crying for help turning oil that's about as thick as peanut butter. I've twisted a few off on old Y block engines

It was -40 here in Indiana last week ,caused by high winds actual temp was -1 or -2 .,I’ve lived here all my life,never has it been like this. I wasn’t ready. My Bladder tank /well pump froze. Got lucky though never lost electricity. This truck reminds me of my 66 Chevy truck I once owned. Those FE ford engines are beast. Stay warm. Cheers 🍻
It’s never been -40 in Indiana. Wind chill doesn’t count or effect truck engines. Exposed skin yes… but objects never get colder then the measured temperature, they just cool down faster to the measured temp when there is wind
@@michaelwitkiewicz7052 you are correct. Real feel temp was -1 or -2 . With the wind , made it feel colder. Coldest record temp in Indiana was -36 . From what I could find online. I hope it doesn’t get that cold again.

Well we have severe winds and low single digits here in Wasilla, I believe you have the TH-cam temperature record for cold starts. Not many people can even challenge -40 below. Congratulations on a successful start.
I found just 2 colder cold-start videos ever, a Prius in -50*C/-58*F (but that's a hybrid, so that's sort of cheating haha) and a 90s JDM Toyota in claimed -52*C/-60*F. That's it. Both in Russia. And I found nothing else where someone plays with such an old car/truck in such temperatures, so this video is awesome. :D

I was thinking the same thing.
I don't know about gasoline, but diesel would gel at that temperature without an anti-gel additive.
It's not the gas freezing its condensation that freezes and ice crystals get lodged in the fuel line and filter.
As far back as the 60's Chev, Ford and yes Dodge were always startable, easily fixable and always got you there at any temperature. Turn the key on a lot of the new electronically controlled vehicles at -30 and all you likely will get is a check engine light. Merry Xmas

A carb is better then that 80s vacuum actuated EFI shit but anything newer then 2000 that's a gas should be fine
