This is so very hard to memorize when I don't have anyone to sign with and practice with. Everyone in my family including myself can hear just fine. I can not get them to show any interest in signing. I'm trying very hard to put all this to muscle memory. So far I have the alphabet and 1-100 down pat and can spell anything but all the signs for objects, actions etc is very overwhelming for my 53 year old brain.
Yes, that can make learning the language very difficult. Knowing the alphabet and the numbers 1-100 is a great start! My parents learned sign language in their 50s as well and had a hard time with feeling overwhelmed at times too. I do plan on creating some more videos to address those concerns soon, but in the meantime you may want to check out this post I did about neuroplasticity here instagram.com/p/B19YGhiHu3G/ and this video with tips on how to continually make progress in the language here th-cam.com/video/3t0nZO6X7t8/w-d-xo.html. Amazing! Got so many more useful signs mastered! thank you! I have a question though if you wanted to ask someone what they wanted for lunch would you sign you, want, lunch, what? or what, you, want, lunch?
Great question, you could actually do both, although in proper ASL the subject (or topic) would go first, so if your primarily talking about lunch, it could go like this- Lunch You Want What? Although, I've seen it signed a variety of ways

Thanks so much for your videos! Super easy to follow and unlike some other ASL beginner/learning courses I've found at other platforms yours seems more...approachable. JUST getting started, and obviously everyone is different, but what would you suggest in terms of hours a day practicing/learning? I'm quarantining and unemployed so I've got all the time in the world... Just don't want to burn out. Thanks again!
Thanks, I'm glad that you are finding the videos useful. My suggestion would be to start small and work your way up. Better to have small wins that inspire you to do more than have a big fail that discourages you from continuing at all. You might find this helpful in regard to setting up good habits for learning th-cam.com/video/lF0Rj_DeNb8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much for making these videos! Your explanations are very helpful, I appreciate that you explain the motions thoroughly! Just out of curiosity, how do companies like McDonald's and Starbucks get their own sign? Do the companies come up with a sign themselves, or do members of the ASL/Deaf community come up with the sign on their own and it spreads throughout the community?
I just bumped into videos and I am learning and refreshing. Can you do some church words? Like I'm learning to translate for church but I am such a beginner but they want me to go ahead and learn so I can practice while at church went we have deaf friends and family members coming to church. Some of the words I already know is church, Bible, Jesus, Christ, cross, holy, Glory, forever, Heaven, God, but could you do some of the Bible or biblical words that are little tougher besides the ones I just listed?? I do no the sign for blood. For me the hardest thing is translating what someone else to say LOL that's where the practice. And sometimes I get frustrated cuz I feel like I'm not going to learn it I love you so much and I know that I can do it it just I need practice Partners LOL
Me and my friend learned the alphabet in sign language so we could talk to each other in class but it got annoying finger spelling everything so we’re learning this as well
Hi. As many of you followers, I can hear, and don't have anybody to practice with. Do you offer videos where you ask to sign certain phrases, or dialogues and then show the correct way afterwards? (like you did a couple of times in this video) For someone like me, that would be a tremendous help. Thank you for your time to create all your videos!
Yeah, we do that every week during our free practice sessions. We will host them on Zoom and all are welcome to join and we also will record the Q&A portions and make them available on Patreon. Here are more details if you'd like to join us next Wednesday aslbasics.com/asl-group-practice-sessions/
Sentence/question sentence I made. English: Hello my name is _ _ _ _ _ _ _. How about yours? In Signs grammar: Hello My name _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .How About yours? (in the blanks you finger spell your name.)
I personally don't know, although Laura Berg Life might be a good person to ask, she is Canadian and is an ASL instructor. It is fairly common for popular store's or brands to be initialized, so it may be signed as "T-H Coffee"
I actually did have a quick question! I am just now trying to learn sign language for future purposes to have conversations with people. I am wondering if all article words are not used. Like, do we ever include article words when we do sign language or are they always left out?
Could you have signed the sentences HUNGRY ME/I, EAT I WANT, HUNGRY I EAT I WANT, LUNCH YOU WANT GO, LUNCH YOU WANT GO WHERE? Those are how I thought you could sign them also. They are all in Topic +Referent+Comment order. Are those word orders also correct?
Great question and I appreciate your sentences. Topic-Comment is a great place to start when it comes to becoming familiar with ASL grammar, Bill Vicars has a great article about it here if you'd like to look more into it www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/grammar.htm#:~:text=Vicars%3A%20When%20you%20ask%20about,by%20adding%20a%20sweeping%20movement).
When asking questions does the question word go at the end of the sentence always or is there a rule that applies? When signing “Do you want to go out to lunch” you sign You want lunch but “Where do you want to eat?” you sign You want eat where?. When it’s an open ended question, example 2, the question word (where) is at the end of the sentence as opposed to a yes or no answer is signed directly (example 1)?
What were the two bonus signs this week?

I'm from South Africa and I'm learning too

My asl class is going out to eat at an IHOP next week to have a silent dinner, so I thought this might be helpful.
That's great, I hope you have a good time at the silent dinner!
How was it?
Great job
Thanks!
>love your teaching. Can the letters on the bottem be removed. They are blocking your hands
Thank you
You're welcome :)
I was looking through the comments for what candy means in Mexico but every time he says "DM me" I don't have insta tho so how can I know?

Finding the eyebrow communication difficult with Botox🤣
Lol
I'm glad that you are finding these videos helpful. The signs come from within the Deaf community
great job i Learned a lot
Thanks, I'm glad that you learned a lot from the video 😀
Oh ya..yes I am coming back to review😁
Me and my friend learned the alphabet in sign language so we could talk to each other in class but it got annoying finger spelling everything so we’re learning this as well
Nice 👍
@@ChrisGorges Thank you for the update, I will keep that in mind. Usually I work Wednesday evenings, but if that ever changes, I might just do that :)

Sentence/question sentence I made. English: Hello my name is _ _ _ _ _ _ _. How about yours? In Signs grammar: Hello My name _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .How About yours? (in the blanks you finger spell your name.)
Im trying to learn because i think its a great language
That's great
I know its kinda based off of where do you want to go to lunch, but I've been practicing where do want to eat lunch instead (you want eat lunch where)
one of my friends is deaf so i want to learn how to talk with her :)
That's another way of doing it, there are often times many ways of saying the same thing :)
@@kyliejenner3246 That's amazing, keep up the great work
I'm from Canada..... need to know the sign for Tim Horton's. Would it just be a "T" and "H" followed by the coffee sign?
I personally don't know, although Laura Berg Life might be a good person to ask, she is Canadian and is an ASL instructor. It is fairly common for popular store's or brands to be initialized, so it may be signed as "T-H Coffee"
i love sigh language its the best
👍
I learn from my collage, and I want to learn more.
I actually did have a quick question! I am just now trying to learn sign language for future purposes to have conversations with people. I am wondering if all article words are not used. Like, do we ever include article words when we do sign language or are they always left out?
They're only used in Signed Exact English, which is ASL vocabulary with English grammar. Otherwise no, they're never used.
I just want to say thank you
You're very welcome :)
What about healthy food eaters? …soy milk, vegetables, sourdough bread, nondairy yogurt, fruit, beans, whole grain bread, nuts, seeds, seltzer
Yayy i found a practice partner
Great!
This is Daniel long and do you have any workshop ASL video on, TH-cam about ASL structure ?
A way to remember drink is you make a C hand for cup, then drink from the C like you drink from a cup
👍
"I need coffee! I don't like Coronavirus. Do you want to go to Starbucks (or not)?"
Do you use closing signals?
