I've been playing shooters on PC for years with a Joystick that I control with my left thumb. Works excellently, and feels great. I really hope Nintendo takes this approach, and more people adopt this idea that we can mix and match controls in whatever way makes us comfortable, and that way, anybody can be good.
Edit: I should note that my right hand is still using a mouse to aim, and that other than the joystick, I tend to use standard keyboard controls (or change inputs to whatever I can reach). But again, I can totally see that left hand just as easily be a JoyCon, and getting used to it. Your right thumb could still use most of the buttons on the right joy con anyway.

It’s not a catch all console it’s a simple console, easy to use for all ages, and most importantly it’s a provider of Family friendly gameplay. Not to mention the iron fist on Nintendo exclusives. But the momen😢it starts to cross over into pc gaming capabilities it will 100% have competition because now specs will start to play a factor. Honestly I think they should keep it simple, relatively cheap, and family friendly it’s their bread and butter and will forever have a market

Oh my god thank you. I've seen so many people dismiss the mouse feature like a gimmick but they don't realise just how many features and games (both Nintendo and 3rd party) are going to want to center their controls around this and just how preferable it'll feel to anything else. Level editors on console will finally feel good again (Super Mario Maker 1 felt so natural on Wii U, but in 2 it feels almost impossible to get anything done), every single shooter game (including Nintendo's own Splatoon and Metroid Prime) is going to use it, and even games we currently have on Switch 1, like Pikmin (every single one), Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Okami, Hades, even Balatro, all of these would feel so much better with it if they received updates to support it.
I've seen people say that the Switch 2 is "underwhelming" conceptually and "what happened to Nintendo" but they're looking wayyyy too much at just the surface. Ever since there was that one statement some time back where Nintendo mentioned that they want to move away from the idea of console lifecycles, everything started to make sense to me: it seems like ever since the middle-ish of the Switch's life, they've been working towards making what's essentially "Nintendo's Steam", with the Switch (1 & 2)'s game lineup being meant to exist for the long term, and all those Wii/Gamecube/3DS ports (with a suspicious lack of anything DS) serving as working towards their goal of "you'll be able to play every Nintendo game ever on this single console family going forward." This is also why I don't think they'll leave the Switch 1 to rot like the 3DS, but instead make the Switch 1 and 2 coexist.*
It doesn't really feel to me like Switch is competing with the Steam Deck or similar PC handhelds, but rather with the entirety of Steam itself (after all, the question people typically ask isn't "do I get this game on Switch or Steam Deck" but "do I get this game on Switch or Steam"). Switch 2 will enable games and even entire genres that heavily prefer mouse controls (and which are therefore mostly stuck on PC, even if they would love to be playable on Switch) to make the jump to console seamlessly, allowing the eShop to have as gigantic of a game lineup as Steam's. It'd even allow for a lot of older mouse-reliant games to come to Switch, such as like, old Sims games, or even point-and-click games, making it clearer that Switch 2 isn't just about specs.
Switch 1 forever bridged the gap between handheld and home console. The twist people aren't seeing yet, is that Switch 2 is going to bridge the one between console and PC in the same way.
    * I can see them phasing out the base model Switch 1 entirely, but it's particularly the Lite why I think they'll want to continue supporting Switch 1, especially with more GCN/3DS ports that don't require the Switch 2's specs or mouse mode. The focus on mouse mode makes me unsure if a Switch 2 Lite is even something that should exist at all; best I can see is an even smaller Switch 1 (Switch Micro?) that's actually pocketable, moves the USB-C port to the top, and has an improved dpad, while the Switch 2's cheaper model could be the exact opposite, a docked-only Home version of the Switch with no battery or screen, and 4 joycon slots instead of 2 (matching the 4 controller ports older consoles usually had).
At the same time... that exact mouse focus makes me unsure how they'll ever effectively sell a new pro controller, since it's never going to be as good at the mouse thing as the joycon is? If they do ever make a new pro controller for NS2 I feel like it'd have do something radically different both from the joycon and the old pro controller... maybe featuring a little screen, positioned like the touchpads on PS4/5 controllers (not a tablet-shaped controller like the wii u gamepad), to make DS NSO in docked mode more natural?

A Switch 2 lite could still exist using the touchscreen instead of a mouse. Sure it might not be "as good" but it'll work well enough for Nintendo I'm sure. Remember that the OG Switch Lite was already lacking features such as rumble and the ability to control two motion controllers at once.

If mouse mode is real, which I'm not convinced yet that it is, I think equally to "useful for shooters" would be the importance of being "useful for user generated content." There's a version of RPG Maker currently on Switch, which I can't imagine trying to use with buttons. When I played Mario Maker 2, I would most often play in handheld so that I could use my finger as a cursor while building stages. There is a basic 3D modeling tool within the MMO playtest for making cosmetics. They've already tried to put out things like Game Builder Garage.
Since UGC and customization is really popular with kids these days, this is the angle I would be taking with mouse mode if I was Nintendo. Now you can make your own characters, outfits, houses, levels, or even games from the Switch itself instead of on the computer.

I think Nintendo might just revolutionise mouse gaming in ways you haven't thought of. A joycon isn't just a mouse, it has HD rumble, gyro/motion controls, and if the sensor can detect distance (ie. if the controller is lifted from the surface, how far away it is / height, and also the speed of the motion) then there is so much potential for a completely new type of play.
Imagine in Mario Kart if you could jump with a quick flick of the controller in mouse mode, whilst you can feel the change of terrain with rumble. I think we all might be surprised when we see how it is implemented!

I kinda wonder if mouse mode will basically never have anything built around it but instead just be an alternative/“better” control scheme. So Mario Maker 3’s level editor will default to the controller-based input of MM2, but also let you use the mouse.

alot of mmos like diablo 4, especially those players who dont like voice chatting benefit well with this option. They prob got moba and other games in mind that play best with a mouse and know they would rake in a ton of money on the side with the feature. Think Poke Unite. Prolly the first game that came to mind. This also pushes developers to be more creative. Create modes in game such as any traditional 2d mario, smash level editor, animal crossing managing, mario kart track creator etc.. they’d be implemented better or have devs include these editing type modes out of convenience.

If the rumor about the Joycon 2.0 having more motion sensors like a magnetometer is true, then pointer controls could be enhanced on the Switch 2, with less drift. With that, Mouse Mode makes a lot of sense in bridging a gap in control modes. If you are sitting on a couch, you can use pointer controls for precision and gyro for aiming, while in handheld mode you got the touchscreen from precision and can also still use gyro for aiming. In tabletop mode or if you play in a desk, you're too close to the screen for pointer controls but too far to use the touchscreen, so mouse mode would be ideal in those instances, grating control parity to every play mode.

@aroonkaruna8513 well it would be nice, of course I am a fan of the old lucasarts games, but they were games known for poor gameplay and excellent writing/humor. meanwhile Nintendo is known for their gameplay and very few of their games are known for their compelling writing or comedy so it would be a pretty extreme role reversal. I also think that the mouse mode is going to be just an extra mode that no game forces you to use because it won't work if you don't have a surface to use like on a couch or on a flight or something, so a whole game built around it seems unlikely

Pokemon home in particular, using a mouse to drag and drop, right and left click, with the left joycon open to extra button controls, I hope it works as flawlessly as I am imagining it. It would be so fluid to just go in and sort your pokemon boxes instead of the tedious grinding we have currently. The mouse feature could honestly be game changer. I am a HUGE fan of games like Cities Skylines, Civilization, and shooters. Although I can see some weird stuff happening with shooters (say like in a COD, if you use switch 2 mouse controls, youll get queued up in PC lobbies,) other games that are developed with mouse and keyboard in mind can just get ported pretty easily. Disco Elysium, XCOM, an old SimCity remastered bundle... all would be HYPE on Switch 2 specifically.
Though I do have a steam deck and it can run mouse and keyboard fine, it does take some of the wind out of the sails a bit, but to have it completely integrated in the device is huge. Maybe Steam Deck 2 can have this feature if it catches on? How would 3rd party controllers work? Could we get an upgrade on, as example, the Mobapad H6s to have the magnet and mouse changes? I would love that because I still expect the Joy Con 2's to be decently unconfortable because of a lack of a substantial back grip.
Also, how would the switch 2 lite work? If this mouse feature is core to the switch 2, how would built in controllers work? Are we going to get tiny switch 2 joycons? I would like a smaller device since i love the size of the original switch, and the switch 2 is getting decently bigger.

  • @MoryBuxner
    @MoryBuxner 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I think the way Switch 2 will work on the TV is that the cursor can be controlled through tilting a la the Wii. There won't be a sensor bar, but that won't be a big deal - the original Skyward Sword could be played without the sensor bar, and it didn't feel much different. There are a few games on the Switch that work the same way, like World of Goo 2. The one major problem with Skyward Sword's cursor was that after shaking the controller around a lot it wouldn't know where the center of the screen is and you'd need to press a button to recalibrate. I think that's what the new button on the Switch 2's right Joy-Con is. They're adding the "re-center" button on a hardware level so developers don't need to worry about that issue and can just treat the two cursor control methods as interchangable. I figure gyro control will be the default, and the moment the optical sensor sees it's on a surface it'll switch to mouse control.

Most accurate and comfortable to least.
    - Dual screens with a stylus touchscreen.
    - IR pointer controls.
    - Two sticks + gyro.
    - Keyboard + mouse.
    - Two sticks.
A mouse isn't a superior control scheme for aiming but it is more inviting for normies and children who are growing up watching steamers, who are 9/10 Steam gamers.
DS games were jank af on the Wii U. So they're going to be very wonky using a mouse instead of a second touchscreen made for a stylus. Even the Castlevania DS game collection was cool but those games would've felt more natural with two dedicated screens.
Two screen gaming was a true innovation and Nintendo has not actually combined all their previous innovations into one console until they bring that back.
When Nintendo can bring back a second touchscreen made for a stylus, that can attach for a clamshell DS form factor then detach for a Wii U form factor. All while keeping all their previous innovations and unique features, then they would've made the ultimate console.

I just realized what they were going after for that slidy Joycon bit in the trailer, and just how big a deal that was. You're right. This is huge. It's not just backwards compatibility with DS games and whatever, this is also enables a huge number of PC games to work. A game like Baldur's Gate 3 would be really cool to use on a Switch 2, with the ability to change from console to PC controls in a flash. Sure, there's no keyboard, but most PC games don't use a full keyboard, either. It would also make using a web browser reasonable on Switch 2. However, I think they're gonna want to make the Joycon broader, not just taller. And maybe an optional full-sized mouse dock for the Joycon would be a good accessory.

mouse mode could be the return of the sensor bar, something people missed a lot on the switch for games that used a pointer, and honestly that could be all it is and people would grab at it.

The most exciting thing about mouse mode for me is the fact that it will make computer games (and computers in general) far more accessible to the "average" person.
My brother, for example, is a big console gamer, but he refuses to play computer games him having a computer for years.
Switch's mouse mod will encourage normal people who dont use computers often to get used to the mouse form factor, which will hopefully make all computer games more standard and accessible to a less niece audience.

The feedback of using mouse mode for something while having rumble will be absolutely stellar. A shooter where you can use mouse and still have a rumble is just a sensation that hasnt been done before.

They will allow you to plug a USB Mouse to the dock. Joycon mouse mode is more so that you can still use it on the go. Let's say in tabletop mode. A big contributor to some switch features not getting used is if they are not equally available in all of the Switch's modes of play, this ensures that you'll always have a mouse or touch screen with you.

I genuinely think mouse mode, if utilized to its full potential, combined with the rumored PS4 Pro level power when docked could make the Switch 2 the only gaming machine you really need. It's the fact that Switch 2 could basically support ALL modern input modes that has me hyped as hell for this thing, especially if they take the ability to read optical data from JoyCons and use that to let you use any normal mouse with the Switch 2 as well. The Switch already supports keyboard input for text fields so I don't see why they wouldn't do this

The Wii U was so much more than gimmick. It was basically a DS where the bottom screen was a touchscreen in your hand and the top screen was your TV.
I wish Switch would have found a way to support that at home as it was groundbreaking for the games that embraced it.

    Mario Maker 3 babyyyy
To elaborate, I think a mouse would really benefit the creative games that Nintendo has pushed (Mario Maker, Game Maker Studio, etc.) in addition to the shooter genre. One of my main grievances with those games is just how clunky it feels to make stuff, so a mouse would be incredibly helpful for that community, too.
Other series will also probably have it tacked in, like the inevitable 1-2 Switch "tech demo" game, Mario Party, and probably Pikmin if they continue that series (RTS games generally). And maybe we'll even get a new IP that uses it like how Arms tried that with motion controls.
I'm cautiously optimistic about DS games, since I've heard people speculate about the additional button on the right Joycon being a "cast" button, which would allow for dual screens (especially since DS games are much lighter than what the Switch can handle). I don't expect it to happen that way (it'll probably be split on the big screen instead), especially after the Wii U tried basically that same thing, but I can see it helping some Wii U games possibly getting ported as well, like Star Fox Zero or ZombiU.

I could see lots of interesting uses for uses. Other than just using it like a mouse, it also has potential for use as a gimmick mechanics, such as cutting with a knife or grating cheese in a cooking game. It also serves to allow more precise painting than joystick controls, which could mean more complex Nintendo game “maker”s could be released, such as perhaps a Mario Kart track maker where you can smoothly paint the course shape.

Considering how good optical sensors have become, i think mouse mode on a couch cushion is completely viable.
Ive actually always appreciated, since the wii, the ability to play games for an extended period of time but not have my shoulders feel sore from holding a controller. Wii-mote nunchuck and the joy cons feel like theyve saved my shoulders and posture overall, so i welcome the joy con/mouse setup.
Civ is gonna be a dream 🤤
If the switch optical sensor is anything like logitechs most basic (or most advanced 🙏🏾) it would basically work on any surface, even glass.
I wonder if Nintendo could somehow mate the gyro and mouse sensor to have more complex interactions like a "lift" motion that actually translates to something.. the possibilities seems endless and im excited.

I think it really depends on the kind of optical sensor they have. I feel like combining both gyro and the optical sensor might make it rather competent even if you are dragging it around in your bed

Glad some other people out there are seeing this potential too.

Trust me. A LOT of people have high expectations for this mouse mode. I've had countless conversations online through discord etc. about the potential for peripherals that utilize the mouse mode, and certain ports. I'm also interested in the dual USB ports, as I'm imagining a keyboard attachment allowing for a portable game/productivity station.

A wild thought that occurred to me when I saw that usb-c slot on top was the potential for a small second screen plugin that would let the switch 2 natively run and display ds/3ds games. At that point they could reopen the ds/3ds store and print money.
The additional weight and battery draw seem like the knocks against that idea.

As a splatoon player myselçf, i do belçive the comunity will not adopt mouse mode. Motion controls on the game are already amazing and using them with a pro controller will be less awkward than trying to aim with the little joycons, specially if you are playing in a sofa or couch and not on a table.

I feel the reason the Switch’s touch screen is so under utilised is because you can’t use it on tv. Mouse mode allows for ‘tv touch screen’ so I’m just excited that touch screen might actually be remembered now
