I remember building with the good old RCX where at that time ever single electrical 9V was cross compatible right up-to the very old light and sound system.
Man, I've played EV3 for 3 years and unfortunately, LEGO decided to ditch the cable, remove the daisy chain and the ability for using the old cables, for me, I'm disappointed that I can't use these things through the new Mindstorm.
I'd love to see that. I'm obsessed with pinball machine mechanics and spend a lot of time dreaming up ways to make obstacles using LEGO. Two years ago I built this one th-cam.com/video/WMbaBRnKnig/w-d-xo.html. Now, I'm building a new and improved on in a different theme. I love seeing others think up some really cool ideas. It's inspiring... I built a mini one with SPIKE. Maybe I'll treat this as a challenge to use it in something bigger.
Apologies if that just sounded like a bunch of self-promotion. It's only intended to give context. I really do want to see more people creating LEGO pinball machines. Please share if you do!
@@renegadebricks ohh I do remember about this machine ! Pretty crazy. Mine doesn't have a fancy video but here it is twitter.com/Darkphenixxx/status/1301355187534266370?s=19
I believe the benefits of the new system outweigh the negatives. I imagine LEGO would make a mobile app that would act as the screen for the programmable brick - similar to Powered Up. The programmable bricks could potentially daisy chain using Bluetooth. I'm really looking forward to the new set. I also loved the original RCX 1.0 and 2.0. The NXT and EV3 had weird shaped motors that weren't compatible with TECHNIC motors, which isn't the case with the new generation or the original RCX.
You could actually connect power functions motors to the NXT and EV3. Also, I prefer the “weird shape motors” and I always loved integrating them into my large technic Mocs
My main issue is that it is being marketed as babies first robot. That's not what Mindstorms is. The NXTs and the EV3 were designed as a higher level of LEGO. This new Robot Inventor set feels like a HUGE downgrade. My sister took LEGO robotics all of middle school, and when I sent her the picture of the new "robot" she gagged. Insert UPGRADE UPGRADE FUCK GO BACK meme here
@@rigatonipasta I give robotics lessons to middle schoolers using EV3 for years. I feel like this set is a very good upgrade. I understand that it feels downgraded, but the versatility offered by the smaller motor (and four of them! ) or the built-in accelerometer is insane. I love the new way of programming too. I really think that it's more accessible for kids, and that it can offer way more flexibility for lego veterans like me! (man : 4 motors, absolute position, accelerometer, less space taken by motors...)
Man you’re just like me ! I just buy this set and he his coming soon. I’m french and 17 years old and I think it might be a good idea to learn mechanics and programming this way. I want to be an engineer and this is the kind of thing that I love
As an alternative to daisy chain, it is possible to connect them using Bluetooth, there is a video about multi brick snake. There are third party adapters between old power Functions, and new Powerd Up (aka. WeDo, Spike Prime, Boost, Robot Inventor) PV- Productions make adapter, and extension cables. They cost quite a bit. Only seen on video never tested them 8
I'm sticking with EV3 for now for the reasons mentioned in the video and also because I only have a Linux laptop without dual-boot(This is by choice since I hate Windows/Mac/iOS/Android and BSD/Haiku/etc. are not supported well enough. I will be getting a PinePhone once a stable OS comes out for it.) so I need ev3dev. I might think about switching when PyBricks finishes their MicroPython firmware for Spike Prime.
I own two NXT's and while they still work, the rechargeable battery packs are swollen and pretty much done for and also the screens haven't worked for years. I want to get the EV3 but honestly it's so expensive and I never really use it anyway, so I'm happy enough with the PC interface.
There is also another aspect of this set that makes me sad - LEGO (AFAIK) didn't publish information about the internals of the smart brick. Both NXT and EV3 had their Hardware Development Kit manuals and both had their firmware open-sourced. This could have helped various community firmwares (EV3RT, ev3dev, ...). It would be nice to see this for the new bricks too (I know about Pybricks, however I think that they have to rely on reverse-engineering).
It took quite some time until LEGO first "published" SDK and HDK under NDA, and finally without NDA. I remember being one of the early guys getting it without NDA. It never was there from the start, so I wouldn't worry too much - they'll probably release after some time.
I like the new one because of the intuitive new designs of sensors and motors, and the ability to code in Python, which means I can do machine learning with it.
Fair enough! Keep in mind EV3 also got plenty of hate back when it first came out in 2013, and now everyone loves it, it takes time to adjust. will you be buying this set by the way?
Faster startup on the newer system is nice, and I'm sure that there will eventually be third party cables and sensors. The lack of a screen is mildly annoying, but in theory you can just connect it to your computer and still get live interactions with it on your PC. But the lack of any support for daisy chaining is a deal breaker, IMO... no real way to do it with the new system is a MAJOR downgrade from the EV3. Faster startup and absolute position motors (which could have at least in theory been made for the ev3/nxt) is no compensation for having fewer i/o ports, particularly when there is no ability to daisy chain devices or otherwise expand i/o capabilities. The ev3 system had its flaws, certainly, but i/o expansion through daisy chaining was an absolutely huge deal for a device with the limited number of i/o connections that it had. Spike primes seems no better than using an arduino for making robots, even more limited, in fact.
Spike prime for future long term support. Currently ev3 has more readily available projects, but it’s gonna get discontinued this year, so I recommend the mindstorms 51515 set
Well, daisy-chaining has been addressed and with the hub-to-hub bluetooth broadcast you can have infinitely many units connected to each other. The lack of screen is a minus, but the led matrix can be seen from further away and any data is easier to read off your phone or computer display anyways. But yes, the major problem is the lack of sensors and limitations due to cables. Its great to have accurate gyro/accelerometer inside the hub and absolutele positioning on the motors, but the cable lenghts are a really limiting factor. Also the fact that there are no third party sensors, but also that not even lego sells their pwn sensors. What if i want the touch/force sensor? Then you gotta buy the 500$ spike set. And along with distance and color sensor, that’s the only other type of sensor. Yes, you dont need separate angle/rotation/gyroscope sensors, but will miss out on lots of cool sensors, like RFID, sound, temperature, compass, infrared…
Love your collection in the back! Also, I own 2 NXTs and an EV3 and love them all! I completely agree with a lot of other fans that the EV3 was better. While the brick is bigger, having the dot-matrix display is super useful , along with extra buttons. The remote is also quite useful, you can daisy chain, and it works with my NXT sets. Not to motion I've always just thought it running Linux is just cool. Wish it had Python support in the excellent programming software, but other than that there really isn't much in the new set that really seems like much of an upgrade. Not to mention it won't work with the HiTechnic sensors...
The new set has one major upgrade, absolute positioning motors! Extremely useful for synchronizing walkers and you don’t have to use touch sensor synchronization. NXT is king! I think new system is better than EV3 but the NXT will always be king.
Unbrickme That feature is pretty useful! I completely agree, the NXT was the absolute best! Might pick up the new set in a year or two when there are lots of books available with building instructions!
@@Unbrickme While you might need touch sensors for synchronization without absolute positioning, at least it was still technically possible to do in the ev3, as long as you were willing to put the time and resources into making it happen. Absolute positioning motors are absolutely no compensation for the complete inability to expand i/o capabilities through daisy chaining. For what it's worth, there's nothing about the spike prime system that should make absolute position motors special either. Either LEGO or some other third party could have always made such a device, if there had been enough demand for it. A resourceful person skilled in electronics could probably hack an existing nxt/ev3 motor and add supplement components to give it a "home" position on startup, effectively making it an absolute position motor.
@@Unbrickme I have both NXT and EV3 and I don't understand how NXT is better. The only thing I can think of is the quicker turning it on but other than that I see nothing.
I see no problems in most of the new stats. Cables, dotmatrix, charging batterys inside hub etc. All this are very minor facts i can deal with. But the limit of just 6 ports and the less powerfull motors make me kinda mad. Maybe there is a better Mindstorms set in 2027 then :(
personally i think the nxt was the best "generation" of mindstorms, nice combination of functionality and playability with a quite easy to get right aesthetic because everythign was just a box. Although i kind of hated ev3 at first because i was afraid that it was going to be a very "locked down" set (that is it only looks nice whenever the official instructions were used) and not really what mindstorms was about (building and creating robots) I was quickly proven wrong by its community of talented people and got myself an ev3. It simply has the best functionality and the most "plug and play" or maybe build and play out of the box that you can get out of the mindstorms line (if you don't mind the long boot times which i personally don't) However. THIS doesn't even look aesthetically pleasing on the official builds and the lack of a maybe a bit bulky but simple to understand system of ev3 and nxt really makes it hard for me to see how this is an upgrade. Im definetely skipping a generation on this one. RCX is better than this.
im also not a fan of the new system or the powered up/control plus, it sucks. the incompatible cables is a deal breaker for me and the dot matrix screen is horible, have you seen the KAZI version of the EV3? they call it ev6 and it has a color touch screen with 8 sensor ports and compatible with lego ev3 stuff
Thanks for this video even tough I’m french and I don’t understand everything but I have already buyed it and he will arrived sooner or later. As a seventeen years old who wants to be an engineer I say this is the real deal
@@Unbrickme Which is a valid concern. Reasonably, if it were possible, either LEGO would likely have already made a firmware update for it, or a third party would be offering an alternative firmware which supports it.
Can someone tell me if there's any available lego mindstorms that actually incorporates LEGOs and build customization. All I see is boring kinects with template robots...
Honestly, I just feel like LEGO wasn't trying with the RIK. Mindstorms has serious competition, like Vex V5, so the next iteration after EV3 should've been a good contender against that system. A sufficient upgrade would've basically been a remodeled EV3 with a rechargable battery, double the RAM and onboard flash storage, and with the form factor of the new ports to go from 8 total ports to 16 I/O ports. The base set could've still just included about 8 peripherals altogether, but the extra peripheral ports would've encouraged consumers to buy expansion packs and what not, with a possible book in extra sensors like Mindsensors had. Perhaps technic sets and even mainstream IPs could encourage mindstorms integration instead of powered up or whatever the technic variant is called.
Can't you use third party software to connect multiple of those hubs to the tablet? I've seen it's possible with the other Powered Up devices and even with ones from other brands that are Lego compatible.
I just got this for Christmas, and holy crap I can’t believe the amount of improvements this has over the NXT (Yes, I am aware of the EV3, though I don’t have one)
Nitisha Khan there was never nxt 1.1. There was always just NXT. in the 1.0 version, no hardware differences only box contents differ. Same goes for nxt 2.0. No hardware difference, just difference in box contents
Perhaps with the EV3, you are correct. Not sure how the RCX is more capable than the robot inventor set. Robot inventor set has hub to hub communication and a much more advanced system! The NXT and robot inventor are practically identical in specs, but the NXT does have an actual screen
This guy makes a fair point about daisy-chaining and the old cables. Of course, me mentioning this is futile as a. I am not going to be allowed to get the 51515 and b. I really like my 31313 kit, the red, white and black color scheme looks really cool. Thank you for the excellent analysis, Unbrickme!
I think you should watch my review of the new 51515 set! Your opinion will probably change! The new system is also compatible with the new powered up motors! So that’s really cool!
Or how about LEGO bring back some of the old EV3 features, but upgrade to USB-C from USB Mini, and make a TOTALLY NEW INTELLIGENT BRICK with a Touch Screen Interface, which can even be able to connect with your home smart devices, and do Home Automation! And have voice control integrated and even connect to the internet like the smart speakers (Alexa and Google Home, but it moves!) How do you think that convenient of a set LEGO would build? They should call the new system AMX, which stands for "AutoMax"!

If the text contains more than one characters, the Hub shows the text in ticker style (I had no problems to read such scrolling text). With the Python command you can also control the speed of the ticker. So you can monitor sensor values or make text outputs... I will upload a video, to show this....
I mean they should give it time because it has just been released. And using computer programing you can do way more thongs than just the brick itself.
I've hated mindstorms ever since the original NXT. The motors were too big and awkwardly shaped, and the wires were too big and bulky. Think of all the compact and crazy designs you could do with the rcx mindstorms. Gone. rip
To be honest - not true that fans hate 51515. Fans hate posibility that Spike Prime should replace EV3. But, there is hope, that this is not that case, because althrought 31313 is discontinued, education version 45544 will continue. So they definetly know, that EV3 has some better functionalities. Problem could be bad sales of home edition 31313
this new robot set is spike prime but with different pieces, and its replacing ev3. when the same happened with ev3 replacing nxt, the education nxt was still sold for a while
shit! didn't know the new one can't be daisy chain and isn't backward compatible... my kids got tired of just one set because you can only do so much with one hub and he got bored about it fast. I got a second set for him a couple of years back and it opened up so much more possible. Should have got a few more ev3 set last year when the price is still reasonable! Looks like we won't be downgrading to the new set! My boy is also learning how to use micopython which I think the new Mindstorms is not supported at the moment.
I know. That's the problem! I have several original Mindstorm sets, some NXTs, some EV3s and even some BOOSTS. I was hoping for so much more. I like the internal accelerometer, but the 5x5 display is lame.
@@joeheiderman6576 let's not forget the internal gyroscope too! here's the thing, have you seen some of the astonoshing giant lego technic creations? well guess what! mindstorms is fully compatible with lego technic. vex is good for classrooms who dont wanna push robotics to its limits. mindstorms can be pushed to its limits man!
Unlikely. You couldn’t daisy chain NXT to ev3 or RCX to nxt. You could still create robots using both with clever techniques like, an ev3 motor activates a touch sensor from the new spike prime system, and have back and forth interactions like that
imo as a competitor in WRO, the new Hub is way weaker than the EV3 brick. The EV3 brick already struggles running python with subpar performance compared to the normal EV3-G software. While the new Hub comes with Lego support for python instead of a third-party firmware, the specs of the Hub are genuinely worse than the EV3 brick. (assuming that the Hub is just a re-skinned version of the one included in the Spike Prime set which is likely since it's referred to as the Large Technic Hub) sacrificing two motor ports is huge especially since even now there are some who use NXT to RCX cables to control multiple motors with a single port. besides, the EV3-G software being built on LabView opens up the option for many custom programming blocks which will likely be unavailable to new 51515 set users. Lego may not want to phase out EV3 entirely since much of the competitive FLL and WRO scene will still continue to use EV3 exclusely.
though if cross-compatibility was introduced between the new Motors and the old EV3 ports it would be fantastic since the new Motors have a more accurate tachometer.
Some of the same exact concerns were met when the ev3 first came out. LEGO still has an advantage in robotics because it can be combined with technic. Technic creations, as you know, can be extremely complex. The 2 ports aren’t exactly sacrificed either. They are both input/output. Up to 6 motors or 6 sensors. So like, you could have 5 motors and one sensor from one hub for instance. As for FLL not phasing our EV3, I can tell you that basically up until 2015-2016, NXT used to be the primary robotics tool in FLL. Please keep in mind that these concerns are just concerns because this system is new. Ev3 was also hated back in 2013 when it first came out. As time goes on, everyone will love the new system, just like how everyone embraced ev3
@@Unbrickme yeah but ev3 was stronger specked than nxt . That's not the case with 515151 . It has less ports and weaker software probably without 3d party compatability
@@lker6501 Less ports isn't something bad. EV3 had 4 motor ports and 4 sensor ports. This one has 6 motor/sensor ports, which is great, since you can have more motors or more sensors. Also keep in mind that, the only real purpose the touch sensor served was to synchronize the motors, such as for walkers. Because the new motors now have absolute positioning, touch sensors are now rendered obsolete. Also, it's not like stronger specifications automatically made the EV3 better. unlike NXT, it used a linux-based operating system, which made it INCREDIBLY SLOW for powering on/off. Seriously, it was much slower than even my computer. Whats up with that. The EV3 also became very quickly out-dated and slow. Unlike the EV3, the new system powers on/off incredibly fast, you can finally make walkers and synchronize them without ever needing touch sensors, 6 ports isn't actually less because they're both input/output, and finally, you can use the powered up motors, which have smaller and better shaping for technic fans and technic creations.
any of the mentioned points are not the reason to avoid buying Robot Inventor set 51515 for newcomers. New kit is for new generation fans which will find much fun playing with it :)
Unbrickme you totally should watch it. Jang watches it, and just2good said he’s starting to watch it. It’s on Netflix and prime video. I will warn you that if you do watch it, it starts a little slow, but by season 4 it’s amazing. If you do watch it, don’t forget the 2 pilot episodes first
1-I think 51515 is for younger ages 2-And in spike prime brick we have 6 ports and in this set we have 3 sensor and 4 motor 3+4=7 and and we dont have place for all sensors and motor 3-We can use nxt sensors in ev3 and hitechnic sensors in ev3 but in this mindstorms we have 3 sensors and we cant buy new sensors from hitechnic 4-In ev3 and nxt we can use high programming language but in this set we cant This is why ev3 is better
Well, you can’t make the argument that 51515 is for “younger ages” since the box says 10+ just like ev3 and nxt. Also it actually has 4 motors and 2 sensors. I personally think that this new mindstorms is very good. Keep in mind ev3 was met with negativity back in 2013 too, but now everyone bows down to ev3.
@@Unbrickme yes i am sorry it has 2 sensor and 4 motor but in lego education web site I see spike prime is for grade 6 to 8 but ev3 is for age 10 to 21 and the design of the 51515 is very simple than ev3 .
If you want it simple make it simple if you want to make it complex do what ever you want to make complex that’s why it’s called LEGO I hope you enjoy all of the LEGO robots :)
daisy chaining is possible, just not over USB Did you ever use a third-party sensors ?, I wonder how many did .... Compatible to all current and future, motors and sensors, even compatible with all new HUBS, they can be used as slave hubs.... the lack of a (matrix screen is maybe indeed a minus, but I wonder how long it will take for the first aftermarket company to make a screen connecting to the US sensors bridge, connector (did you even know that existed ?) with a much smaller food print and a much lighter weight new creatins are possible that were never possible before..
Yes, I used third party sensors all the time! My personal favorite is the gyro sensor from hitechnic! Used that thing in my robotics all the time. Currently with spike prime, daisy chaining is actually not possible, however, I believe that lego will make that functionality available after the 51515 comes out. Yes the lighter footprint is definitely a plus, but I’m just really concerned about the third party sensors
Look at the new motor, they make it too easy. When u make something with the inventor kit, it just goes too easy when u show something that u build with it, it isn't impressive at all, u don't need to think how u need to build it. It just goes together. Its made up for little kids. I mean where is the challenge. The new bricks make it too easy, u don't need to figure out a way of building. U just do it because it's easy a'd possible with the new set's. If u have a kid from an age of 7 u can give it a set like this, but what i don't understand is why they put these sets in the lego mindstorms category. They are just giving the previous lego mindstorms sets a bad name because the new ones are too childish. Come on people at LEGO, make a category for these set's, like: 'LEGO EDUCATION JUNIOR' but don't put it in the same category as the OG lego mindstorms. Ignorant people will think every lego mindstorm set is for kids. Because of these new models. If i could speak to the people at LEGO. I would tell them that their shitty new 'robots' are trash, and made for kids. I mean look at their childish colors, their easy bricks and motors and even the programming sucks.
@@Unbrickme The programing/coding with this will be more similar to real life coding then EV3 LabView. The Display LED will allow easier programing games like tic tac toe. The motors are in better shape to be integrated with any built. The built-in gyro sensor will allow easier built of gyro bot. One more motor then EV3. Lithium battery included.
im just glad a new one is out, people ask for one and then imo are ungrateful, while i do agree lego likes to downgrade they should just be happy abt getting a new set.
To me, this set looks fine. I'm not sure about how this scratch program will work, as I'm used to the NXT program, but using python sounds fun. Maybe some people will find some interesting functions with the light screen(or whatever it is, idk). The cables are a letdown, but I'm sure some third party users will find a way to make new sensors. I might not buy it on release date(sometime in autumn or something), but I'll give it a try. Can't wait until Laurens Valk makes the next discovery book for this.
@@Unbrickme i was always wondering why so many liked now EV3 lots od people complained that NXT was better and EV3 was slow ... maybe because in 8 Year it got new functions and more used to it...
The moment I saw the new mindstorm set I hated it . Not only does it lack the screen , the interchangeable, backwards compatibility it also lacks 3rd party support because I don't think there is a way to insert blocks into the program . Moreover it feels like lego is copying there own homework . They just recolored the spike and called it a new product . To end with the thing I hate the most is the fact that they removed 2 ports . I regularly take place to robotics competition (wro, fll) and all of the reasons above are crucial for the robot but I think the most crucial is the amount of ports . In the competition almost always we use all 8 ports of the robot . Sometimes not even 8 were enough and instead of adding they removed 2 ports . I hate every single part of it and I hate how lego is trying to milk money instead of giving us a good product
1) I believe we will get third part support soon, right after the official set releases October 15th 2) The removal of 2 ports isn't bad at all. It comes with 6 input/output ports, instead of 4 input and 4 output, you can sort of go crazy with 5 motors and 1 sensor, for example. Also keep in mind that, for the NXT 2.0, 2 of its ports were almost always occupied by 2 touch sensors. Touch sensors were only really useful for synchronizing motors and walkers. The new system has motors with absolute positioning, meaning, the new system renders the touch sensors obsolete
@@Unbrickme well the in/out ports doesn't make up for removing 2 ports . In wro the ports are really necessary . Sometimes we barely even make it with 8 ports . We need motors as much as we need sensors . Also about the 3rd party support . Even if we have third party support (Wich I find unlikely because it's not as easy to make blocks as it was with ev3-g cause it isn't based on lab view )we would have to spend extra money to buy them instead of using the old ones . So all the hi technic sensors are gone .
@@lker6501 Yes you make good points.the new cable for overall future long term support is better because its compatible with powered up and such. While its a shame that all third party sensors are no longer compatible, we might get a cable converter from third parties. @@kleinfeicht Lego is ultimately a luxury item, and if I may be honest, has always felt somewhat overpriced for what you actually get. However, when you consider the quality of the product, and particularly if you compare it to the quality of competitors, you see that you aren't entirely paying top dollar for nothing.
No daisy chaining, no proper display, slower processor, less memory, and no use of standard batteries are just some of the downgrades. If they brought out another Mindstorms set after 7 years, _everything_ should have been better.
You can see that there was a likely a lot of product development pressure to keep the price the same as the 31313 set which was already quite expensive to begin with and LEGO wanted to reach a wider audience. As a result, they had to take some cost cutting measures such as using the same brick from SPIKE and using fixed cables. This was likely also the reason they made the decision to give up on the touch sensor to incorporate an additional motor I.e. more people would want the extra motor in the kit. The overall package seems to be designed to make entry easier for Newbies. The lack of backwards compatibility is just a cash grab - straight up. All that said, I do see this as a technical downgrade from the EV3 which has much higher limits overall.
I totally agree with you! It might be possible to daisy chain the hubs via bluetooth via software updates, but nothing like that is confirmed. Yes, ev3 is better than this, but NXT was better than ev3. Nxt wasnt better functionally, but NXT had a much wider community and more user published instructions for models, ev3 barely had any

Even though I haven’t used my EV3 kit a lot, I’m still super glad I got it. It’s awesome
Yeah it’s pretty good, although it is outdated
I love the new mindstorms set! Such a cool idea.
Honestly same here, I'm just addressing some of the issues I've seen many fans complaining about
My main issue is that it is being marketed as babies first robot.
Yeah man! I totally agree!
I agree with all the disadvantages mentioned but I am going to buy one anyway
I also bought one :) I actually point out many advantages of the new system in my review th-cam.com/video/kNT3R9_kMKA/w-d-xo.html
Man you’re just like me ! I just buy this set and he his coming soon. I’m french and 17 years old and I think it might be a good idea to learn mechanics and programming this way. I want to be an engineer and this is the kind of thing that I love
@@dawn6329 LEGO robotics is definitively a good way to learn engineering. Have fun!
As an alternative to daisy chain, it is possible to connect them using Bluetooth, there is a video about multi brick snake.
There are third party adapters between old power Functions, and new Powerd Up (aka. WeDo, Spike Prime, Boost, Robot Inventor)
PV- Productions make adapter, and extension cables. They cost quite a bit. Only seen on video never tested them

I think you might change your mind after watching my review of the set, it’s my latest video
I think lego will publish more information once this set is officially released
It took quite some time until LEGO first "published" SDK and HDK under NDA, and finally without NDA. I remember being one of the early guys getting it without NDA.
It never was there from the start, so I wouldn't worry too much - they'll probably release after some time.
I'm buying an EV3. Should I wait until the new one or buy the EV3?
Could you please reply? I really don't want to waste money...
buy the ev3. More third party accessories are available for ev3
@@Unbrickme Thank you! It won't get... discontinued, right?
It’ll get discontinued later this year. But there will still be software support for a few more years
@@Unbrickme Thanks!
@@Unbrickme WHAT
I like the new one because of the intuitive new designs of sensors and motors, and the ability to code in Python, which means I can do machine learning with it.
Fair enough! Keep in mind EV3 also got plenty of hate back when it first came out in 2013, and now everyone loves it, it takes time to adjust. will you be buying this set by the way?
@@Unbrickme yeah, hopefully I can save the money for it and not end up buying anything else
Ev3 can also be programed with python . In fact it can be programed with c,java and python and a lot of other languages .
Spike primes seems no better than using an arduino for making robots, even more limited, in fact.
if i don't have any spike, mindstore ev3. which you suggest I can start to play also for my kids?
Spike prime for future long term support. Currently ev3 has more readily available projects, but it’s gonna get discontinued this year, so I recommend the mindstorms 51515 set
I like it actually. I kinda looks futuristic and cool!
you like it, i like it, its just the majority that hate it
and I like it
Ever played with mindstorms NXT?
Check out my robot Neptunian in the community tab of the official mindstorms app
Maybe there is a better Mindstorms set in 2027 then :(
less powerful motors? no, torque is about the same I think
I think daisychaining might be possible now or soon.
personally i think the nxt was the best "generation" of mindstorms, nice combination of functionality and playability with a quite easy to get right aesthetic because everythign was just a box.
I 100% agree with you that the NXT was the best generation
I hated the EV3, still kinda do, due to the absurdly long power on and off times. Seriously it’s longer than my computer.
im also not a fan of the new system or the powered up/control plus, it sucks. the incompatible cables is a deal breaker for me and the dot matrix screen is horible, have you seen the KAZI version of the EV3? they call it ev6 and it has a color touch screen with 8 sensor ports and compatible with lego ev3 stuff
Thanks for this video even tough I’m french and I don’t understand everything but I have already buyed it and he will arrived sooner or later. As a seventeen years old who wants to be an engineer I say this is the real deal
it seems like with a software update daisy chaining would be possible through bluetooth
yeah definitely, but ive heard the argument "why should I trust it will be software updated if the functionality doesn't come out of the box"
All I see is boring kinects with template robots...
i mean, these robots do incorporate lego
It was upgraded to allow daisy chain right?
yes. Via bluetooth.
I've seen it's possible with the other Powered Up devices and even with ones from other brands that are Lego compatible.
yes but in that case your mobile device would serve as the central processing unit, causing various latency issues
I just got this for Christmas, and holy crap I can’t believe the amount of improvements this has over the NXT (Yes, I am aware of the EV3, though I don’t have one)
Nice! Consider watching my full review of this set too! I'm a lot more positive in my review

Hmmm... Time to take a closer look at VEX?
that's not lego
I know. That's the problem! I have several original Mindstorm sets, some NXTs, some EV3s and even some BOOSTS. I was hoping for so much more. I like the internal accelerometer, but the 5x5 display is lame.

I think part of the reason EV3 is so flexible is that it is Linux based, While the new mindstorm is not.
New mindstorms is microPython
I already have EV3, if i buy this there may be a possibility of use them together?
Unlikely. You couldn’t daisy chain NXT to ev3 or RCX to nxt. You could still create robots using both with clever techniques like, an ev3 motor activates a touch sensor from the new spike prime system, and have back and forth interactions like that
this robot is awesome, it allows me to show how to teach high tech to kids more technologically🎉❤
I love it too
imo as a competitor in WRO, the new Hub is way weaker than the EV3 brick.
I like that set though
yeah its just the strong enthusiasts that seem to hate it
any of the mentioned points are not the reason to avoid buying Robot Inventor set 51515 for newcomers. New kit is for new generation fans which will find much fun playing with it :)

2-And in spike prime brick we have 6
ports and in this set we have 3 sensor and 4 motor 3+4=7 and and we dont have place for all sensors and motor
3-We can use nxt sensors in ev3 and hitechnic sensors in ev3 but in this mindstorms we have 3 sensors and we cant buy new sensors from hitechnic
4-In ev3 and nxt we can use high programming language but in this set we cant

Yes, I used third party sensors all the time! My personal favorite is the gyro sensor from hitechnic! Used that thing in my robotics all the time. Currently with spike prime, daisy chaining is actually not possible, however, I believe that lego will make that functionality available after the 51515 comes out. Yes the lighter footprint is definitely a plus, but I’m just really concerned about the third party sensors
I havn't seen much hate for this set
Trust me there’s a lot

The moment I saw the new mindstorm set I hated it .
1) I believe we will get third part support soon, right after the official set releases October 15th
2) The removal of 2 ports isn't bad at all.
While we probably wont see as much third party blocks of code, python does support third parties, and we might get third party python commands
It's a huge downgrade. The brick should have a display
New "display" isn't that bad. Main issue is lack of reading sensor values from the brick itself. You need to always have it connected to your computer
i love this set because im a kid [real] and im an expert at lego.
You should watch my review of this set! I praise it so much in my review!
Its evolving , just backwards.
Actually some aspects are great! Absolute positioning motors, internal gyro, and more
@@Unbrickme yes but i think there are more cons than pros.
I think you’ll change your mind after you watch my full review of this set
@@Unbrickme maybe! I was waiting for review
My review is already out
So the professionals hate it ...i hate it because its lego and lego is dead to me since the killed Lego Technic 2017... and that they overprice there shit... i am on new ways to look for better if i ever wanna start... i need to say 2010+ did destroy awesome companys
how is technic bad since 2017? I'm genuinely interested
@@Unbrickme 42070 overpriced unfinished overall shit ... and since 2017 no real good Technic set ... only 1 crane and lot of stupid cars... oh and an way to overpriced 42100.... and technic was always good value but now its dead ...
@@kleinfeicht Lego is ultimately a luxury item, and if I may be honest, has always felt somewhat overpriced for what you actually get. However, when you consider the quality of the product, and particularly if you compare it to the quality of competitors, you see that you aren't entirely paying top dollar for nothing.
nice vid first btw
thank you and congratulations
And the Bluetooth is better on the new mindstorm bluetooth set
you dont need the brick its anyways small when your coding you dont need it because your gonna use your computer, tablet, and mobile
You still need the brick for convenience
I can't afford this set anyway
:(
This is still a huge downgrade. I hate these new version, too fk childish
Nxt wasnt better functionally, but NXT had a much wider community and more user published instructions for models, ev3 barely had any
Im just gonna pretend that this set never existed.
EV3 is a pretty bad set also. NXT is king
@@Unbrickme i mean , i was using EV3 and compared to what you said in this video it doesnt seem to be somehow better that EV3. But what about NXT? Can you explain what is better in nxt? I didnt use it so it would be nice to know :)
First pin this

You all understand that this new robots is for a lower age group. It’s not an upgrade. It’s meant for the elementary school age group instead of the high school.
That’s wrong. Ev3 and NXT were all for 10+ just like this, and yet those were adapted by even serious universities. The sad truth is THIS IS REPLACING EV3. It even says “retiring soon” next to the ev3 kit on legos website
Overpriced junk. I wish they still had all the expansion packs etc, all the cool Technics stuff that one could fit together a million different ways... Lego is no longer ambitious. Lego will gradually become indistinguishable from other toys sellers and Fade Into Oblivion
I don’t think it’s junk, but I can agree that it’s overpriced. Think about it. We have $50-$100 full fledged smartphones with color LCD displays! And yet the spike prime hub, which has no display and barely any computing power, costs $250! You could get a cheap iPad for that same price
