Just letting you know, the new MINDSTORMS hub is 100% compatible with powered up motors! I’ve tested it and it works! I think I’ll be ripping out the control+ hub from all my control+ technic models, and I’ll replace it with the spike prime hub! I really wanna be able to make robots out of my technic sets and code them on an advanced level with python!
Tasse Tee nah man, the hub still won’t have a display. Plus I’d much rather use the mindstorms hub and programming than pybricks. New hub also has 6 ports unlike 4, so I can add more sensors
@@Unbrickme Yes, all I wanted to say is: You can program other hubs with python if you use pybricks. And if you want to build larger robots: Not every action has to be controlled by a central "brain hub". You can add multiple autonomous extensions with their own sensor-input and without any communication between the hubs :)
my school never had lego robotics unfortunately. Despite mindstorms being used by some of the greatest minds of the world, my 7th grade robotics teacher said "EV3 is just for elementary school kids" I completely disagree with that statement. We ended up using linkbots, which are honestly a joke compared to lego mindstorms! You couldn't make segways, you couldn't make advanced gearboxes and mechanisms, you couldn't do anything fun with those awful linkbots
To me it looks like Lego is getting more and more just a money grabber. I liked much more the first editions of Lego Mindstorms from the 00s. They were ~200 bucks and were geared to a more experienced (adult) people. They offered much more possibilites from a developer's point of view. I remember the third party programming languages like NXC and NQC, which boosted the limited capabilities of the simple bricks. I understand the goal now is to get to young kids into learning robotics, but seriously 400$ for a "toy" for a 10 year old kid? Seems too much to me. Not to mention in a classroom, 4000$ bucks to teach robotics to kids it's a lot of money for many schools (at least here in Spain). Also, they seem to shorten the life span of their new line of products and cut too many expenses (I really miss the outstanding printed manuals from the 90s-00s era!)
judging from previous mindstorms sets I've had, in the rcx there where three I think builds in the instruction with extra digital robot instructions and in nxt only one bot had physical instructions the rest where only digital so the fact that all instructions are digital this time isn't that weird
Why Spike Prime didn't get Dark Mode? Finally, after Mindstorms 1/2 and EV3, LEGO makes the software on their own. It is big step forward, but they have long trip still ahead...
Yes the adapter works, but with that you loose a lot of interactive functions. I only see it useful in some rare scenarios, e.g. stacking lights to be controlled from a single output.
@@RacingBrick thanks but I also have another question/idea. Could you make a video about how you could make the stig rally car faster and look better. And make things on the bottom to make it go off road Thanks again

Nothing new. You can still buy the Spike Prime set on lego.com, but the corresponding software and lessons are meant to be used in a classroom environment
Hey ho! What is your opinion on using the Robot Inventor for education in a makerspace (not school with tight schedule)? I prefer the more complex models you can build with the parts of the Inventor. The spike prime models are quite simple to be able to build fast and the joy of building is missed... The inventor can use the firmware and software for spike right? Price wise is also better. I only need to sort the storage problem. Any ideas? Thanks!
You can flash the firmware from one to the other and use the corresponding app. I think 51515 can be used for the purpose you described, although you'll need to explain more about coding as the app doesn't provide much information. Or it should work with kids who are familiar with the basics.
I have the 51515 set: thx for your video. I have the same remarks as you made: sorting tray, tooltips, no introduction etc. I have a question: can I use the spike app also or does it not work or ruin the use of the mindstorm app ?
You can update the firmware of the hub to the Mindstorms / Spike Prime variant by connecting it to the respective app and use it with that going forward.
It's not very surprising as it is not included in the package. I'm sure there's a lot of hardware that is compatible but not supported initially, like the Powered Up light for example.
By any chance, do you know what is both the running torque and stall torque of the powered up medium motor, the Powered up L motor, and the powered up XL motor, measured in Ncm?
Lol by any chance no :) But you can always check the excellent motor comparison chart made by Philo, if some data is available it will be there - www.philohome.com/motors/motorcomp.htm
The Mindstorms set has a Medium angular motor, the Volvo has the large one. It is different from the Spike Prime variant in color, so I'm sure it has a different ID as well.
At 5:16 there was a comment 'acces to 3rd party hardware...' where can i find out more about this featue? On inspection I cant see this connector. Any info is apreciated.
You need to unscrew the 2 screws on the back, there's an 8 pin female connector under the cover. It is described in the data sheet of the sensor - le-www-live-s.legocdn.com/sc/media/files/support/spike-prime/techspecs_technicdistancesensor-0c8e0242c7a21506a56240e73092ed93.pdf
Hey wanted to ask which kit is more harder to build and more complex. I am a grade 9 student and have had 2 EV3s the 31313 and the education one as well. Which is more advanced because I actually use it to build prototypes for rovers and NASA projects. Thanks
I don't think one is more harder to build than the other. Spike Prime might have moe builds and tasks but they are probably more simple as they have to fit in a classroom schedule. All instructions are available online so you can check them yourself and decide.
Spike Prime update on PC with a cable is for teachers and probably 16+ Hubs easier. Instead of connecting and sorting all the hubs on a phone or tablet. Think of all the 16+ randomly numbered hubs in your android/ios Bluetooth manager.
I’d say that after having the set that EV3 is for more experienced users but the new Mindstorms set is for more beginner users. Although the new system does have a lot of benefits like being able to use the powered up motors with it. But there isn’t that big of a gap between the EV3 and the new Mindstorms set. Many of the same things can be accomplished but the new Mindstorms set does have some nice additions like better shaped motors that are easier to fit in. As for Spike Prime or Mindstorms, they are essentially the same thing but Spike for the education market whereas Mindstorms is for home use.
Gamemasterks Dude nah man EV3 is just 2013 outdated technology. Same thing as using the iPhone 5s in 2020. The new system is much, much better than the god awful EV3, and I’m saying this is a relatively advanced user, having used RobotC, NXC, and python before!
@@Unbrickme Why was the EV3 so bad. My only complaints were that the motors were weirdly shaped and that the program is 32 bit. From my experience I never thought the hub was too slow or anything.
Gamemasterks Dude don’t you think that the god awful start up and shut down time was too slow? It was literally slower than my work computer. This was a major downgrade from the NXT system, which only took like 3 seconds to power on! The ev3 kit’s robots also came with pre written code, with many of the blocks being like “my blocks” and this doesn’t teach you to program at all! NXT, however, has guided programming, which took you through each step of programming! It was awesome, and it was actually how I learned to code when I was just 7 years old
With the previous two generations of mindstorm - NXT and EV3, you could buy the commercial version and a Lego Education version. The differences were very similar to the Spike Prime (in fancy plastic bin) vs Mindstorms (51515 in cardboard box). I would be surprised if LEGO didn't release the new mindstorms (51515) in a education set eventually. These sets are usually a bit more expensive, EV3 education is ~$440 vs. Commercial is ~$345. This difference in price is typically based on slightly better assortment of parts in the education version and also comes with a rechargeable battery pack, not to mention the excellent plastic bin :) I highly recommend waiting for the education set before purchasing as set, or go with the EV3 which I like a lot! Thanks for the excellent video review of these products!!
@@RacingBrick I'm not sure I agree - it seems to easy for LEGO to repackages the new mindstorms kit not to sell and education version.
