- I've been on holidays.. From filming and editing also.
So I thought I'd give you this little vid while I work on some other things.
Enjoy.
Former commonwealth railways CL7
Now CLF3 - Australian EMD unit, the last streamline locomotives built in the world in the 1970s!
The engine is an EMD 3300hp Turbocharged V16 2 stroke - producing 3000hp for traction.
Built by clyde engineering - rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen - Uniquely Australian.
As a child all I ever wanted to be was a train driver, your vids are the closest I ever got!!😄😄
Glad you enjoy them :)
Me too, awesome video.
as a Young adult it's all I want to do haha the trouble is I have no idea where to even start with it haham theres no courses as far as I know and employment agents can't/won't help me
I got to run the train at work a few times. And yes it is so much fun it should be illegal.
Great video.
Life is great on notch 8!
What does notch 8 mean?
That's full power on the locomotive throttle
For anyone curious, the horn is a Nathan P5
About to go out & watch it come through on 6MC5 in about an hour, always makes my day
Nice piece of gear I remember working the Indian with them
Fantastic video! Loved the head cam shots where we're able to see the instrumentation and outside. More of this please!
The bulldogs are very nice, I love that EMD sound :) Thanks for the nice driver's cab view!
beautiful video
Almost a tradie's breakfast. Meat pie and a chocolate milk has been a staple around Australia since 1970 also. Only the milk was in a glass bottle with a foil top. 👍🇦🇺
One of the coolest trains
love the sound of those engines especially when taking off and puting the power down, beefy and awesome, great vid cheers mate.
Nice choice of drink.
Awesome stuff mate! Great to hear that there's more of this coming soon.
Animals are "blown away" by all these horns on the nose 😁
சூப்பர் ரயில் ஒட்டுவது நேரில் பார்ப்பது போல் இருக்கிறது
An F unit in Australia, that's pretty cool! Need to travel there again!
Yep still running almost every day if the week here on the south east coast.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Erie Mining, Hoyt Lakes Minnesota had a fleet, I think 5-6 F9 A units and 5-6 B units. Of course they were closed before I moved to the area. They donated one of the A units to the Railroad Museum in Duluth Minnesota, they still use it on their excursion train.
@@karlzwaschka4905 haha that's so cool! Our poor old girls are still crawling up hills at 5kmh.. I don't know how they do it still!
What state are you in aussietraindriver?
Was she always white?
Oh
Smooth.
Beautiful video! Same exact locomotives here!
Thanks for the ride.
Good Locos those fellows. A pleasure to drive. The cabs were MUCH quieter than the GM,S.
good so far!
wow amazing footage!
Not a bad looking cab ride at all there AUSSIETRAINDRIVER as always hooking in a bit nice looking loco that one to mate.
I wish that we could bring the retired CLF's and CLP's over here to the states!!! They are my favorite units!!!!! I wonder if Aucision Models would ever make these super bulldogs????
You can get them, auscision make them if I recall.
Great video, keep them coming!
Hi Adam another great video, many thanks, ( looks like you were on the standard gauge track) stay safe. Cheers Lee.
I miss the old streamlines
Thanks mate
Video suggestion: Bring train to a full halt from 80km/h - I think it's time we all got the cab perspective on just how long it to really takes to stop a 2,000 ton Train.
The issue you get with that is wagon wheel flat spots, usually it's good to avoid unless in an emergency.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Well, a knuckle will always break, not if but when ;)
Love it! I wanna be a train engineer now!
It's a good job!
Ah yes ....... a C class with a body ( well, almost )
Fantastic video.
Cheers
I reckon the CLP & CLF Bulldog loco’s would have to be the Epitome of EMD’s design, one tough beautiful looking locomotive and we are the lucky last to design and build it and to see it working, l have seen her working a couple of times while helping my brother rebuild a few old Ford Mustangs and others from his property in Wandong but l always have to down tools whenever a train comes thru just to have a look what it is! But l have to say the CLF looks pretty darn good in white.
Interesting that the EMD carbody design lasted later there, always loved that design. Also odd that in the US cars are left hand drive and locos are right, looks like both are the opposite there.
This driver is more centrally seated. In Victoria, drivers sit on the left of the cab.
wow that white engine is brilliant ,never ever seen one
Was it always white? I cant remember what colour they were growing uo as a kid now. I remember every single noise theyd make but. Perfect
More More More
really great, love these locos. wish we have them in england, are they the same as the U S versions built in the late 1940s ?
Not that early, more 1950s design but the CLs were built in the 1970sin Australia.
Wow mate! This is awesome! What sort of things do you haul? Freight etc? She still seems to honk along.
That sound is almost too good isnt it!
I actually have one of those exact horn sets on my car, when the train up here honks, i like to beep back and wave, hahaha usually gets a head turn ;)
What's the ride like on them ? the standard GM flexicoil bogie thats supplied with ours was average and if the wheel profile was off they would rock side to side.
The CL rode quite well, other locos do tend to hunt a bit more though.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER It's amazing there was so many of that type made by GM like the F7 , the Swiss Blomberg bogie was chosen then as GMs experience with these was limited for passenger speeds.
We have so many F type units still running here on the east coast and some central south, and they will be going for a long time yet.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER They would go forever.
Hey mate, can you do a video for us talking about what it’s like to be a train driver and going over your usual daily or weekly routine?
There is no routine mate. It’s weekends, nights, late starts, early starts, all in the same week. Plenty of sunrises and minimal sleep. It can be challenging in many ways. In particular the fatigue, missing social events and family milestones
It’s also good pay, not labour intensive, interesting while you’re learning at least, lots of responsibility and challenging when things go bad.
@@NoBody-ht1oh I would love to listen to you guys talk about your experiences in your job, I’ve often wondered what it’s like to be a train driver. Much respect
@@R31Mark cheers mate. Any questions just ask. I’m sure both of us have plenty to share.
No body is right, its a mentally and emotionally tough job, it can be the best one week, and suck the life out of you the next, you sleep during the day, up all night, see the sun go down and up, there's countless rules and regs, every location is different, the signals, the different equipment, it's hard on relationships, it's hard on mates, you work rotating rosters that run around the clock 365 days, you work public holidays, Christmas, you miss out on time with family.
It takes absolute dedication, you have to want to do it, and enjoy the challenges that are thrown at you almost daily, I could write for hours.
I run the fb page, "tales of the footplate" hoping to get some anonymous railway stories from times gone, although people are quite shy when it comes to talking about rail experiences, because some stay with you forever.
It's a great job, it's rewarding, you habe an enormous amount of responsibility, and you have to know everything about just about everything before they will let you drive these on the mainline.
My videos are to show the fun parts but there's plenty I could show you of the job that would turn people off.. Hmmmm maybe an idea for another short film
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER spot on
Is there any chance you can tell us mere mortals what all the gauges mean? I'm new to your channel and sorry if you have already done this.. Thanks Tim.
How do you get this job? I finding the way to Australia and old EMD is the reason why i want go there. I graduated in bachelors of automotive engineering but train driver is my dream job and it alway been.
Look at railtrain they take on guys off the street, might be a shoe in.
Cracking video Adam, nice quiet cab compared to GM class eh? GoPro9 production? Still undecided on it. Thank you.
Cheers mate, no this was the Samsung S21ultra footage. It's not bad. 4k 30fps
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Very clear and sharp, colours are good too. So the GoPro9 not as expected?
@@dieseldavetrains8988 yeah still got the go pro just depends what I have handy at the time, got. Got more gorpro footage coming.
really weird seeing the console on the left side of the cab, our consoles here in Canada are on the right side.
Road crossing warning horn use a little different in the US , I believe it's two long a short and a long blast.
Yes our rules here are different, 1 long one short here minimum for level crossings.
is that the original dash in them or is that layout from when they were rebuilt? i like the video, thankyou
That's the later dash built by Morrison Knudsen.
I think the kangaroo wanted a ride but gave up when he couldn't catch you.
It’s a Wallaby.
DARRENR 🏠 have OK yes ❤LOVE
Will it be in service for awhile yet or will it be retired at somepoint? If it's working well and reliable, there's no reason why it can't be kept in use yeah?
It will be going for some time yet. It's only just been re activated.
The B class in Victoria are nearly 70 and still going strong
This clip makes me feel kinda boxed in a bit
How so?
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER its probably camera angle and I'm only seeing that.
That's pretty cool!. What's the noise level and are they popular among the crew ?
They are reasonable in the cab, both sound and layout.
Kind strange hearing a 645 or 710 series engine in an early F body style.
Is that Nathan AirChime old cast P5 horn?
That was rare in today's day, the newer cast does not produce pretty harmonic like the old cast does.
This specific P5 play the same chord as the M5.
The note and frequency is :
0. 220Hz A
1. 277Hz C#
2. 329Hz E
3. 392Hz G
4. 440Hz A
5. 554Hz C#
The M5 only play the number 1 to 5 and number 0 bell only available for P horn only.
While the new cast play (3rd gen P horn) :
0. 220Hz A
1. 294Hz D
2. 349Hz F
3. 415Hz G#
4. 440Hz A
5. 523Hz C
Even the old cast P5 sound pretty, the M5 still the prettiest horn I've ever heard. But unfortunately I never heard such horn in real life.
The only train horn i ever experienced hearing it in real life is only Wabco AA2 play D and G, and new cast Indonesian P2. Which is bell no. 1&4 play D and A.
Don't confused with the American P2 which use the bell no. 1%2 play C# and E (old cast) and play D and F (new cast)
No that one is a new cast, but it does sound slightly odd. Never been a huge fan of the NC P5 but some do sound nice!
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER really? I thought it was an old cast.
So.... you mean the new cast P5, when it's become out of tune (odd), it's make pretty sound?
Wow, what a discovery. But, to be honest with you, I've never heard new cast P5 sound so pretty like yours.
Or maybe it's have different tuning for Australian use, like the K5-UL-AU-LS version of K5LA?
I don't know a lots about it, because the information from the internet is so little, seems like restricted.
So did Australian get it's own tuning on P horn? Like on the K horn
BTW, what gauge you use in Aussie, because I've been watched video about flying scotsman while back, and it's use standard gauge.
While on Wikipedia I've read about some of Indonesian locomotive have been shipped to Australia, it is CC203 or GE U20C, and in Indonesia we use metre gauge.
So, what gauge did Australian use?
@@rahmanaridho yes it's an odd sounding new cast we have various P5s here and many sound different, possibly due to fouling or bells not sounding maybe even casting or machining differences.
In Australia we have a few gauges, standard Guage is Australia wide or interstate, victoria still has broad gauge for its suburban and regional trains, so has south Australia but limited to heritage networks.
NSW is almost all SG
Tasmania, QLD and westen Australia have extensive Narrow gauge networks - 3' 6"
There some isolated 2' 6" railways around too.
As well as the sugar cane railways in QLD which use 2ft gauge.
So there's quite a mix here!! I
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER wow, thanks for the information.
So the conclusion is, in Australia you have all kind of season, any train horn sound, and any gauge.
What an awesome country.
Yes it's quite a mix here! We have many different horns, leslie, airchime, Nathan, kockum sonics, westinghouse, to name a few of the larger manufacturers, as well as some hybrids. And a mix of gauges
Rattles more than the inside of my '92 Saturn.
Do trains have University??? 0:50🤣🤣
Now arriving from Sydney on track one, train number six, the New South Wales Flyer
Why is engine controls on left side??
That's where they are in Australia
@@calcutt4 Never realized that they would move the controls like the cars
Very nice Adam, it's looking pretty good for the age of it and how long it sat stored. Wonder how much crap had to be got out of it when reactivated?
Yeah true, I'm not too sure what had to be done to them before they were active again.
What age can you become a Train driver
At least 18
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER ok because I whant to be a train driver for picific national or g&w gen and.whyo
@@lcstrainspotter3888 defs work on that spelling buddy, and keep trying to get in.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER I'm 13 I film trains all the time
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER thanks for the nice comment I have had horrible ones before
Is it fun to blow the horn? Is it fun to drive freight trains?
Both are very fun most of the time! 😊
OR A V16 -567 ENGINE!
We have those too.
3300 HP or 3000 HP?
Title and description different.
A recent downgrade?
The engine is 3300hp - they have 3000hp available for traction.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER The other 300 HP is for the air compressor I think? Great cab video by the way, it’s good that you are allowed to do it. Well, I hope so anyway haha.
@@gm16v149 air compressor, auxiliary alternator, fans and traction motor blowers.
Is the cab air conditioned?
Sure is.
better before MK rebuilt them, put that "desk top" crap in there!
Agreed! Although I'll admit it's one of the better emd desk top controllers ive driven.
@@AUSSIETRAINDRIVER Ha!, yes there is a bit of a mish-mash out there! the ALF, your mate could reach the headlight switch better than the driver!
NOT A STREAMLINER! STREAMLINERS HAD A 567 ENGINE IN IT OR A 645E ENGINE!
Well this is even bigger and better, a one of a kind with the 645e3,
It is a streamliner given that it has a get this, STREAMLINED BODY
