  • The all new 2022 Tesla Model Y AWD was recently announced starting at $59,999 and a 279 miles range! With 4680 cells and the new structural pack, the Model Y offers a lot of new technology that Tesla has been working on for the last couple years. We take a look at the new information released from the Cyber Rodeo event hosted by Elon Musk to determine some new battery back configurations. We also walk through how the EPA tests electric vehicles. There might be some hidden information we do not know about!

This video is the clearest and best analysis of how the 4680 will make it into Model Y production. Awesome report...Thanks!!!

Very good explanations. This all makes total sense to me. For the weight difference, my guess would be the energy density of the 4680 cells is not yet where it should be. Tesla decided to put them into production as soon as performance was comparable with existing battery packs. Improvements will follow over the next years. Of course I could be totally wrong with this :)

    Model Y AWD Efficiency: www.motormatchup.com/efficiency?id=61fc2d81618f575816e1a303
Why do you think the new Model Y AWD has only a 279 mile range?
A couple corrections in the video:
    1. The EPA provides the testing procedures, but the manufacturer actually does the dynamometer test
    2. The EPA curb weight for the AWD Model Y is 4,356 lbs. My notes had 4,365 lbs the whole time so that's why I was saying the wrong number

*Good video. Do you know when the 4680 Battery will come to the Long Range Model 3? Everyone is only talking about the Model Y. Really wish the LR Model 3 gets it soon later this year or by Jan 2023.*

That's a nice presentation. My first though is that the Y AWD will be produced in Fremont with LFP batteries (LFP chemistry doesn't match with 4680 so far). Then Tesla will move LR and P production to Austin using both 2170 and 4680 (as stated in the Q1 call) to shift totally to the 4680 by 2023 for LR and P. By that time they should be able to meet all the improvements in cost and energy density presented during Battery Day. I think this make sense because they will shift MY LR and P production to Berlin, leaving the AWD with LFP to Shanghai only. I was at the CyberRodeo, but nobody understood what kind of car they delivered at the end of the presentation.

Agreed. One thing: The China Model Y with LFP battery is a RWD model, not AWD. So, the same as Model 3 RWD. I understood from battery day, that Tesla wants to use LFP for the entry-level RWD (former SR) models. LR and P get 4680s. I assume that this Model Y AWD is only a short-time placeholder, maybe only for Tesla employees, once the volume production for LR and P is feasible.

@@reneh.8817 you are right, but I was referring to a new model, not the RWD. Nowadays it doesn’t make any sense to propose a cheaper model. Only reason could be rising the price of the LR, having the AWD and save some kWh… I don’t know

Will the Giga Texas 2170 battery Model Ys have front castings and rear castings like the Giga Texas 4680 battery Model Ys have? Per Munro Live channel, the Berlin 2170 Model Y's seem to only have the castings on the rear.

  • @deanmcmanis9398

I think that the lower range is related to limited 4680 battery production, and Tesla working to not have buyers wait for the superior 4680 battery pack performance, weight, and range. Originally, the Giga Berlin Model Ys were announced to be the first ones to start production using the 4680 batteries. But Giga Berlin had many delays, especially with their planned 4680 battery factory, which is still not built and operational. Tesla was building 4680 batteries in the Kato rd, Fremont, CA factory, but I think that production fell short of original plans. Plus the Giga Texas battery factory was probably planned to be in full production by now as well. But everything got delayed, with Covid, shipping and supply constraints, and battery material cost spikes. This is a short term compromise. I suspect that the accessible battery capacity may be greater, and software limited with the new 4680 battery pack. This way the new batteries don't hurt other Model Y sales, there is more available in a buffer to improve reliability, and the actual mileage numbers are better than estimates. Plus, Tesla can increase the new Model Y range over time with an OTA update. Otherwise, they could actually have the smaller capacity pack, which saves on 4680 battery needs today. And they will fill the pack with a LR model later when the 4680 battery production begins in Texas and Germany. I also suspect that Tesla will release a standard range RWD entry Model Y using LFP batteries, as they have in China.
