Kind of unrelated but my personal headcanon for a while has been that the reason David Hayter doesn't voice Big Boss in Ground Zeroes is that Ground Zeroes is a recounting of the event from the perspective of the "memories" implanted onto the medic during his coma. I think this could explain not only the difference in his voice in Ground Zeroes, but some of these other discrepancies as well. I do like that and I've come to think the same - it does make sense. I know outside of the game David Hayter was a bit upset but for this story to work - and if indeed this is a recount of an event then it makes total sense.

As the 1960's was the decade of love, the 1970's was certainly the decade of violence, not one of peace. The Sandinistas and the loss of stability in Central American through CIA proxy wars, the continued tribal/state warfare that befall Africa after the European colonists "officially" left the exploited content, the Lybian revolution, the Ethiopian instability following Halie Selessies's death, the Ugandan coup, India's rise to a nuclear power and the beginnings of the Pakistani nuclear program, Pol Pot and his killing fields of 3 million dead, the Olympic Israeli hostage deaths, the creation and rise of the Irish Republican Army and ending with the Iranian revolution. This does not even include in the significant rise in street level violence across the United States. It's still strange to me how the decade known as the "peace of love" generation was one that included the assassinations of JFK, RFK, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the introduction of 1500 US Marines to Vietnam, which ultimately led to an all out war. Maybe our fathers and mothers called the 1970's "the decade of violence" because they realized that the "peace and love" generation ultimately failed, mostly due to apathy by the end of the Flower Generation and the beginning of new, and just as bloody, decade. There is certainly a pattern of repetition now. History may look like a circle, but the variations it tine make it more of a spiral inti several directions
The definition of what constitutes Torture as i recall it was changed 13 times during the Bush administration. Ground Zeroes is a strange microcosm of much of the historical analysis you provide in so many of your essays. I was always confused by what seemed like the culture of acceptance regarding an overt torture and "detainment" camp during the first decade of the millennium. Playing this should be and was Disturbing, cushioned only by being able to engage in new mechanics at the time or appreciate its audio and visuals. The photos that emerged from "Abu Graib" if that is the correct name (?) are just the tip of the iceberg. Anyway im rambling, thanks for your ongoing hard work Boss 🐍
Great video, it almost made me think that Kojima is weaponizing memes in conjunction with the idea of 1984. GZ tries so hard to invoke emotions into the player(thoughts generate emotions/emotions generate thoughts), using all these references so the player can create those vengeful thoughts all on their own(genesis). It’s actually a great view on todays media as well, trying their hardest to invoke emotion of anger/fear, creating daily conflicts that never really end.. They just continue into tomorrow.
the big boss we got to play in the entirety of mgs v was such a better person then the real big boss, in the gz's tapes jack like miller couldn't give two sh*ts about paz but venom's very body language told more story of care and affection almost if he was one of the lovable goofballs from peace walker.
Played MGS3 before Peace Walker and than Ground Zeroes. I felt it when it ended. My wife gave me MGS Ground Zeroes and Phanton Pain as a birthday gift in 2016
Having the US torturing a child and his dissociation and obsession with the event works on so many levels. It’s literal but also symbolic of the generations post Vietnam functioning within the neoliberal power structures
one thing to add regarding split personality disorder is that a conspiranoic rumour states that it could have been intentionally provoked to create soldiers that could endure all kind of tortures. These soldiers would only come to, if a particular word (or a group) is spoken. Like locolope, from los simuladores.
Been watching these videos a while and the link between phantom pain and leftover radiation from a nuclear explosion/warfare didn’t really click until he just so casually mentions it in the video which is another reason you can tally up this being the best Metal Grea Solid TH-cam channel I miss these tid bits playing the game sometimes being a big reason why i watch
I think the whole MGSV is incredible but I couldn't get into it Gameplay wise myself. But it's incredible to watch others play and also about the lore.
this was so fucking good, I love your analysis of the 1970s and the war on terror, are you familiar with the documentaries of adam curtis?? your work reminds me of his a lot and thats a massive compliment !
Who else knows the intro text by heart. I really felt the pain After 200+ hours in Peace walker. Luckily I played mgs4 After 5. Never felt such a relief as when I finally got my revenge on zero
From the Chico's Tapes investigations to this, it blows my mind how much depth and meaning you've mined from what I initially wrote-off as a basic gameplay teaser for TPP.
I think your comparison of an abusive parent/child relationship and the relationship between the American government and American public is really, really interesting! It really is the same thing in a lot of ways. Another great video!
I love your video essays so much. They unpack the impossibly dense world-building & real-world references/nods of the MGS series in a way that I never even considered, during my years spent playing them. Keep up the good work, Boss!
One line that always sticks out to me is something that Kaz will sometimes say during the main mission: "The rain was coming down just as hard the day we met Paz. 'I only want peace for my country.' I can't believe we ever bought that cover story. After Paz tried to steal Zeke from us, and we watched her get pulled beneath the waves... There was one thing I kept asking myself. Which was the real Paz and which was the lie?" How do you interpret this line given that Kaz says pretty explicitly at the end of PW that he knew who Paz and the Professor were all along, and that he knew Paz was a triple agent? I have some interpretations: 1. I think given the themes of MGSV (and the parallels with MGS2), it's totally possible that the entirety of GZ is some sort of dream or hallucination or recollection of the medics implanted memories that he's reliving.. or something like that. In which case, Venom likely would have a distorted memory in which Kaz was just as fooled as Snake was; in order to make Kaz more trustworthy so that he and Venom would build up Diamond Dogs together. 2. It feels equally possible that this was simply a mistake/oversight in writing that no one noticed or cared to change
@@sliceofzura 1. Paz was shown to have severe doubts and was heavily groomed by Zero in her tapes. It’s debatable if she even wanted to sell them out after Peace Walker. 2. Both Sons of Liberty and Phantom Pain start with a mission as who was advertised, continue with an entirely different person, and end on the note that anyone can be either snake or big boss. The difference is that while becoming the Snake is a choice, becoming the Boss is a curse passed on from tutor to student. You are sentenced to fight for the rest of your days. In TPP, Jack died, and gave the title of Boss to Venom. And whoever holds the title of Boss will live in endless battle.
The best and worst thing about analyzing Ground Zeroes is that it is a case of unreliable narrator. All paradoxes or inconsistencies can be swept aside once you accept the interpretation that MGSV:GZ is not the lived experience of Big Boss, but rather the false memories implanted in the mind of Venom Snake.
This is basically "it isn't bad writting, it's a feature" as an excuse. Not to mention that Ground Zeroes isn't even from Venom's perspective, rather Big Boss/Snake's.
I liked the dark side on display in this game. What they did to everyone, particularly Paz and Chico was brutal (especially if you listen to the tapes) TPP sadly falls short, though it does have dark moments, some fall flat. For example Big Boss "murdering" his infected troops turning him into a "Devil" didn't hit because everyone, you (the player), Big Boss and the "victims" knew and agreed he had to it, so much so they stand and salute and let you do it. The heart of TPPs issues really boils down to Snake never really stepping into the shoes of Big Boss (which is ironic) At the end of Peace Walker it really started to look like Snake was finally stepping into being Big Boss. He was supposed to be somewhat evil by MG1/MG2 but the moment never arrives (whether you go off fake BB or real BB) Some might argue that that's the point, that the BB we thought we knew from the outside wasn't real and that the real story of both the fake and real BB is that they were more complex but I simply don't buy into it. Imo Hideo felt almost afraid to make him go fully evil and I think that's a shame.
Theres no point in telling a story with a 100% evil villian. That doesnt happen. Even Hitler loved his wife. Doesnt excuse the things he did, but even he had love in him. It would be completely destructive to any narrative.
@@alexrivers8163 if that is your point than you're totally wrong in this. Did you watch the Joker movie? It brilliantly portrait how Arthur become the Evil Joker - the most iconic villain in Batman. Even people loved Dark Knight's Joker as well and the way Nolan portrayed him. Sadly Hideo Kojima did fan service in Phantom Pain and lot of content felt cut or forcefully removed. Even killing the soldiers in Afghanistan would trigger Demon Snake with horns. We all wanted to see whether Big Boss or Venom become completely evil but the game failed in that miserably. Interestingly Rockstar's Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption didn't disappoint us with a different character and touchy story. Phantom Pain on the other hand felt seriously short.
@@sarahphyllis5782 joker wasn't 100% evil. He was a soldier who was wounded in battle in the nolan verse and thus his motives against society regardless of what he says in the movie are sympathetic.
What happened with Zeke? Is it still down there on the Ocean floor to this day, it seems all future metal gears (except TX-55 and D who look like reverse engineered copies of rusty wreck fished out the sea) are based on Sally, so was its technology lost for long enough to become irrelevant?
This timestamp 22:28 may also cause some "conflicts" of massive magnitude with the viewer's "internal timeline" lasting for about 1 minute and 28 seconds "for a S-Special reason."
Interesting video. Just one point of clarification, though. The sign regarding “No POVs” is common on military bases. Refers to “privately owned vehicles” not being allowed past certain points…don’t think it’s Kojima being cleaver about points of view or anything.
First of all, great vid as always second your thoughts and direction are always on point. The only thing I would say that could be taken into consideration is that America has always wanted to be the bigger brother and because of this they have stuck there noses into to many personal issues that they do not truly understand. Iraq at the time was being held in an iron fist by former dictator Sudam Hussein. They where crying out failing to realize that without Sudam , they would not have a defense against Iran and other parties with there own personal interest for Iraq. Vietnam was almost the same case. Thanks for the vid. Over and out.
Would really help to add a basic animated timeline to your videos. Check out SecretBase's long form sports stories for an interest visual to present such data and stories.
Honestly ik its probably a lot to ask but since this game is so short wish they added like more than one ending like imagine if you did smth a little different knowing what will happen and it changes it like maybe if you do it in a certain time frame then you go home early and stop the search and save mother base id love to see smth like that at least
So here's Skull Face. His face being burn from a very young age is an allegory to 911 and how people would be scarred by the events even if they survived the attack. Now, if you look at Quiet and see her chest, her 2 breasts are obviously a parallel to the world trade center...

My wife gave me MGS Ground Zeroes and Phanton Pain as a birthday gift in 2016
Absolutely love it. I look forward to every upload, man. You do fantastic work and thank you for all the effort you put in to each and every video.
Great content as always! I'd be happy to see the side ops explored.
I cant explain how much i love your videos. Never stop making these
Having the US torturing a child and his dissociation and obsession with the event works on so many levels. It’s literal but also symbolic of the generations post Vietnam functioning within the neoliberal power structures
That segment about disassociation and child hood trauma is my demon. Thank you for this video Jorin Lee.
one thing to add regarding split personality disorder is that a conspiranoic rumour states that it could have been intentionally provoked to create soldiers that could endure all kind of tortures. These soldiers would only come to, if a particular word (or a group) is spoken. Like locolope, from los simuladores.
Like Quiet talking for the first time and calling Snake "Ahab" 🤔
@@vikkvikk13 I was thinking more about the replacements of the gene's bases
Been watching these videos a while and the link between phantom pain and leftover radiation from a nuclear explosion/warfare didn’t really click until he just so casually mentions it in the video which is another reason you can tally up this being the best Metal Grea Solid TH-cam channel
I miss these tid bits playing the game sometimes being a big reason why i watch
The gift you have of speaking, and also finding truth trought this games is amazing. Speak the truth brother !
I had to watch this a few times in a row, so much information and so well organized
Love adam curtis, and these videos do remind me of his work
Who else knows the intro text by heart.
One only needs to look at the classy work of the loving, tolerant, and kind work of the ATF for examples
@@baker90338not just them, the cia and fbi experimenting on citizens and killing civil rights activists
The ending of this video hits the nail on the head, and always reminds me of how truly connected the themes of these games and our real world overlap.
Which was the real Paz and which was the lie?"
How do you interpret this line given that Kaz says pretty explicitly at the end of PW that he knew who Paz and the Professor were all along, and that he knew Paz was a triple agent?
I have some interpretations:
What do you mean by, which was the real Paz and which was a lie,
And how does tpp’s themes mirror mgs2. . ?
This feels way too deliberate for Kojima to overlook. Especially considering Peace Walker was released right before GZ.
@@sliceofzura
Just want to say that the song “Here’s to You” slaps.
How do you know the memories are false? Cassette tapes in the phantom pain confirm the events of ground zeroes?
This is basically "it isn't bad writting, it's a feature" as an excuse. Not to mention that Ground Zeroes isn't even from Venom's perspective, rather Big Boss/Snake's.
Might sound dumb but I never would've known the Gitmo reference if not for this channel.
You make everyday a better day with each upload!
Who knew that a small game like Ground Zeroes was such a work of art.
You know what they say, "Less is more"
I first played MGSV May last year. After all this time, I still cannot watch that bomb extraction scene...
I liked the dark side on display in this game. What they did to everyone, particularly Paz and Chico was brutal (especially if you listen to the tapes)
TPP sadly falls short, though it does have dark moments, some fall flat. For example Big Boss "murdering" his infected troops turning him into a "Devil" didn't hit because everyone, you (the player), Big Boss and the "victims" knew and agreed he had to it, so much so they stand and salute and let you do it.
The heart of TPPs issues really boils down to Snake never really stepping into the shoes of Big Boss (which is ironic)
At the end of Peace Walker it really started to look like Snake was finally stepping into being Big Boss.
He was supposed to be somewhat evil by MG1/MG2 but the moment never arrives (whether you go off fake BB or real BB)
Some might argue that that's the point, that the BB we thought we knew from the outside wasn't real and that the real story of both the fake and real BB is that they were more complex but I simply don't buy into it.
Imo Hideo felt almost afraid to make him go fully evil and I think that's a shame.
Totally agree with you
Theres no point in telling a story with a 100% evil villian.
@@sarahphyllis5782 also Arthur wasn't 100% evil Arthur was also sympathetic
Thank you for this video. Absolutely vital.
Please, keep this content coming!!🙏. Amazing🤘🏻
Yet another banger video. Thanks Boss
I was just looking for something to explain ground zero!!! Thank you❤️
Although the classics are classics, I would really love to see the 8-bits be remade...imagine Hayter vs Sutherland with his red arm...
It was fun speed running this one. Really the only game I ever did that in.
Despite the plainly grim tone of the game and content, seems like you have fun with this script. So did I!
"The gap in the door, it's, a separate reality"
i wasnt sure what you meant by no POV in your context but it means personally owned vehicle
you left an "um" in the cut at 15:50 ish, i was surprised to hear it for how clean your takes are
What happened with Zeke? Is it still down there on the Ocean floor to this day, it seems all future metal gears (except TX-55 and D who look like reverse engineered copies of rusty wreck fished out the sea) are based on Sally, so was its technology lost for long enough to become irrelevant?
If my memory is correct there are cassette tapes in The Phantom Pain that reveal what happened with Zeke but I can’t remember the details
Wow great conclusion @7:20
Ero pronto a commentare con un "soul reaver", ma mi hai anticipato!
Nice just started playing mgsv again, I made an m16 gl. Pro tip: the event reward battle fatigues (Desert Ambush) looks great to cosplay the U.S
The mrs4R is a SAR80, unfortunately. If I can recommend one, take a look at the chocolate chip “desert camo” for maximum desert storm vibes.
everytime I see an essay of yours, I just need to play MGS V again

I'm still shocked about what happened to Paz. T.T

I don’t know why but TH-cam refuses to notify me of your videos even though I have the bell rung.
This is some next level aspergers content 👌
I need to reinstall GZ now
Thank you
Would love to know your thoughts/theories on Chapter 3
Interesting video. Just one point of clarification, though. The sign regarding “No POVs” is common on military bases. Refers to “privately owned vehicles” not being allowed past certain points…don’t think it’s Kojima being cleaver about points of view or anything.
Every video he makes on MGSV is just him going “this is literally 1984”
This is 1985
And? 😎
Another brilliant presentation from, Jorin. Well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ground zero is a coma dream.....?
First of all, great vid as always second your thoughts and direction are always on point. The only thing I would say that could be taken into consideration is that America has always wanted to be the bigger brother and because of this they have stuck there noses into to many personal issues that they do not truly understand. Iraq at the time was being held in an iron fist by former dictator Sudam Hussein. They where crying out failing to realize that without Sudam , they would not have a defense against Iran and other parties with there own personal interest for Iraq. Vietnam was almost the same case. Thanks for the vid. Over and out.
Season 5 of Blowback is heavily inspired by MGS, I highly recommend you guys check it out
Excellent video, great to listen western people telling the things as it is and no BS.

Metal gear is more than a game it's a self reflection of the times that made the world we live in.
They played us like a damn fiddle
Essay on the album Operation Mindcrime when?
wow you sure assumed the entire game has to do with 9/11
So here's Skull Face. His face being burn from a very young age is an allegory to 911 and how people would be scarred by the events even if they survived the attack.
Now, if you look at Quiet and see her chest, her 2 breasts are obviously a parallel to the world trade center...
I need a metal gear collection or something. I just wish I could play the older games. MGSV is good enough tho!!
I still miss Paz
According to the Metal Gear chronology the attack of 911 never occurs or at last happen way too early around the 70s
What if Ground Zeroes is BB's 'personal' 9/11?
You're wrong. Even the timeline at the end of GZ references it. Revengeance even mentions 911 directly multiple times.
