  • Can a bike ride to work be easy and fun ? With a BBS02 750w mid drive, capable of reaching almost 80 km/h, mounted on a Focus full suspension mtb, certainly it can. The almost perfect commuting transport was alredy invented long ago, it just need the electric boost to reach perfection.

    I got my Bafang and its so interesting. I thought I would just ride the throttle and never petal but turns out I pedal just like you do in the video. It makes it so easy that you want to pedal to get the most out of the batteries. Because you feel like you will never get tired. Seems like people don't get that from most videos. This one makes it kinda clear how easy it is.

    Hi! Nice video ! Question: Do you cut the power when chaning gears? You don't seem to stop pedaling. Do you have sensor to detect gear changing? I know you can find them on the internet. I think not cutting the power during gear chaning is not good for the chain and gears. Thanks !

    Hi pedro,
    when you use the throttle, does it work as a variable speed, or only as an on and off switch?
    We are just putting a bike together with the BBS02 and when testing it today, the throttle seems to only act as an on and off switch, with varying speeds depending on the selected speed level.
    i would have thought that the throttle should respond depending on the throttle position regardless of the pedal assist speed mode (slow on low throttle position, and full speed on full throttle position...

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there ! My throttle varies the power delivered to the engine, depending on the switch position. In fact I use it most commonly when I need that immediate boost - like for instance when I'm stopped at the traffic light and need to speed things up to keep up with the traffic. But on ocasions I give it just a notch to climb slowly without pedaling, like when i'm getting in my garage, which has a little ramp.

    I'm impressed of bike stability at those speeds... and can take the torque just fine. Iuse a 900 Riverside hybrid from Decathlon, honestly has awful stability even at it's maximum electric asisted speed of 15.5mph.

    • @lewisedwardson7776
      @lewisedwardson7776 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's like a $300-800 bike, and that's before electric conversion. You got ripped off, dude. Even a $100-200 walmart bike is stable at 25 mph. If your bike is unstable at 15 mph, that doesn't sound safe to ride at all. I don't even see the point of riding it.
      If you want a decent cheap bike, I got a Heybike Race Max 2 months ago on sale for $600, they're on sale for $700 right now including shipping. 500W motor, 48V 12.5Ah battery, 20 mph speed. Then again, if you live in Europe then the limit is 250W and 15.5 mph speed. But in US the limit is 750W motor and 28 mph.

    Muito interessante essa ebike.
    Eu também tenho uma mtb com esse mesmo kit e bateria 14,5 Ah. A diferença é que tenho uns pneus slick (1,2 largura) e assim consigo um aumento significativo da autonomia com um pouco menos de conforto. Mas é sempre agradável. A andar sempre no modo 4 faço 50kms sem haver shutdown do sistema.
    Quantos kms faz em média por carga?

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      O conselho que me deram e que eu procuro cumprir escrupulosamente foi nunca deixar descarregar completamente a bateria. De casa ao trabalho faço mais ou menos 15 km. Normalmente ponho a bateria à carga no final de cada perna. Além disso, noto que quando a bateria está completamente carregada a voltagem parece ser superior e o motor responde melhor.

    • @smoochyblue7370
      @smoochyblue7370 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sim, eu nunca deixei haver shutdown do sistema por falta de bateria também! A andar ao ritmo que anda, suponho que não consiga fazer muitos kms por carga. Eu tento andar mais devagar para conseguir fazer 40-50 kms por carga. Se quiser sentir a bicicleta a desenvolver bastante melhor é experimentar uns pneus de estrada como eu tenho. É mt nice.
      Bom video.

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Entretanto já mudei os pneus. Troquei os Continental Race King que a bicicleta tinha de origem por uns Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Que diferença ! Também troquei os travões de origem, uns Avid Juicy 3, por uns Shimano SLX, versão 2017. Também uma belíssima aquisição a nível de segurança. Andar de bicicleta elétrica é uma aprendizagem permanente. Atualmente só ando à velocidade a que estava a andar neste vídeo quando tem mesmo de ser. Normalmente tento andar entre o 3 e o 4, o que me garante uma muito melhor autonomia ;-) Boas pedaladas.

    I find that with my BBSHD with 46x12 I am not able to keep up pedaling at anything above about 45km/hr. At 50/55 kph, on a flat road, i´m putting no physical effort, the motor is doing all the work. Obviously, on hills, the steeper they get the more i have to kick in (and maybe add some throttle) to keep speed.

    Two questions : how many days can you travel with one battery fully loaded? (guessing you only do 2 timles 15 km per day). And second questions: how comes your battery has ony one bar left at 4:41 and after you used the thumb throttle you got three bars ?

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Again, it depends a lot on my riding. But to be honest i´m not really worried about range. After riding more than 15.000 km with the ebike in the last three years (that has now a BBSHD mid drive), i found that the best solution for me is having two 14Ah 48v batteries instead of a single huge capacity one (thar wouldn´t fit in muy frame anyway). If i have to travel say 50 km or so at full power i carry one fully charged battery in my backpack and swap halfway. As for the bars in the display, they´re not fantasticaly accurate and prone to under reading when the demand on the battery is high. What i recomend is to test how much you can squeeze out of the battery based on your tipical riding and use it as a reference. A display with volts reading is also, i guess, a more accurate way of judging the charge left.

      @@pedrogustavof THanks for your fast answer. I have ordered a Bafang mid motor too, with a 48v 17,5Ah battery. I'll have to ride for 30 km to go to work and then 30 km back. The morning commute does not scares me as it's mostly downhill (the height differences is around 800m up or down). The evening, I have to take a safer but longer road. I plan to charge the battery at work and hope it'll last. I'm not planning to use the full throttle neither Just may be for the last big stretch or road that goes up a lot.

      Hi Poll. My commute has some rough climbs (hence, one of the reasons for the e-bike kit in the first place). It takes me around 23/25 minutes on average. On the way back it´s a bit faster. Without the kit, it would take me one hour of great effort to do the same commute and i would have to take a bath in a gym next to where i work. Not very practical.

    • @Pollmak
      @Pollmak 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      25 min for a 15 km trip, that is awesome! I used to cycle to work, the same distance in 45 min on all flat surface from East London to the city center.
      I now live further away from work and a single trip is 18 miles (30km) almost double. So I have been catching the train, which is expensive (£1900.00/year) and this last year there have been a lot of strikes, so I am thinking of upgrading my bike to electric pedal assist, save money and get fitter.
      Do you have to do much maintenance on the electrics?

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Above all, it now takes me half the time, without any effort (i just park the bike and head to work,without a drop of sweat). I reached the 4.600 km on sunday, ultil now with no issues. These electric motors are suposed to be maintenance free - which i doubt a little, but well see. From what you describe, i think a electric conversion would suite you perfectly. My only advice is to chose wisely the battery capacity. In my case i was fortunate to benefit from the advice of experienced and informed people. As an example, i have a 14Ah, 48 V battery, Sanyo cells. If i use maximum PAS (5), the range is roughly 30/35 km. Obviously, the range progressively increases as you reduce the assistance. Hope ir helped.

      I am considering the 750W motor with 14Ah, 48V for my Marin Navato, a city hybrid that has a light Aluminium frame.
      I will also need to test the ride on a rental electric bike to confirm the travel time, traffic and my energy levels after a 18 mile trip, as well as bike range and charging options....all very exciting.

    what gears are you using to be able to still pedal at 60km/h?
    I have a bbs02 and my top gear is 42x11, and It is difficult to keep pedaling after 45kmh..
    I will receive a 48t front ring soon, I hope it will help. Are you using a 52t front ring?

    • @pedrogustavof
      @pedrogustavof  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I recently replaced the original 44t chanring for a 46x11. Beyond that the ring would hit the chainstay. The 46t gave me the ability to keep pedaling a bit longer, at the expense of a little less torque - and a lower gear - up the hills. But when i reach say 60+ km/h it´s almost impossible to keep up pedaling, so i have to use the throttle from there. My top speed was almost 75 km/h before i had to hit the brakes. I guess with a longer descent i could have reached a little bit more, say 80 km/+. The one upgrade for my bike that noticeably improved the performance of the engine as well as the overal speed was a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Plus 26x1,75 tyres. Plus, the tyres have an extraordinary puncture protection, wich is a big plus for a bike commuter like myself.

      well my kit is 52v battery 1500w motor and his is probably 750w 48v, my e-bike going up decently sloped hills (I weigh 250lbs) goes around 35-4ishkm/h I'd expect his bike to drop below 30km/h if he wasn't pedaling using throttle only. But those numbers are just approximately and I'm largely basing theses numbers off my more powerful bike. If you are looking for speed and power you should look into a surron or enduro ebikes they pack a crazy punch.

    You must be using a front gear with more teeth and a back gear with fewer teeth than usual (you might even overvolting the motor)... That's why you were able to reach 70km/h on motor only...
    Because the standard kit, with the standard gear won't exceed 55km/h on throttle only.

    - Parabéns por optares por ir para o trabalho de forma sustentável. No entanto estás a exceder os limites de velocidade.
    - Esse bicicleta não é "street legal" em Portugal. Podes vir a ter problemas com a polícia.
    - 70 Km/h de calções e t-shirt? Boa sorte nisso quando um dia precises de fazer uma travagem mais séria. E vai acontecer, só não sabes é quando.

      Se todas as transgressões na estrada em Portugal fossem bicicletas a circular no modesto excesso de velocidade que conseguem arrancar a um motor elétrico, este país seria a Suíça. Mais grave do que isso é o desrespeito quase absoluto dos automobilistas pelas normas já em vigor no Código da Estrada relativamente aos ciclistas, em especial a obrigatoriedade de conservarem uma distância lateral de pelo menos 1,5 m nas ultrapassagens.

    • @MrBaptista
      @MrBaptista 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tens toda a razão no que dizes sobre os automobilistas.
      Mas lá porque os outros desrespeitam, não nos dá o direito de desrespeitar. Acho que é assim que os automobilistas pensam e o efeito é a bola de neve que vemos.
      O meu comentário nem é tanto sobre o estrago que possas cause nos outros (se bem que podes deixar um peão muito mal tratado), mas mais sobre o estrago que possas fazer em ti mesmo. Toma cuidado e boas pedaladas.

      Eu percebi e agradeço. Uma das vantagens de ter um motor elétrico com algum desempenho é poder circular com mais segurança na estrada entre os carros. Parece um contra-senso, mas não é. Poder circular de forma constante a uma velocidade idêntica à que a maioria dos carros circulam em cidade protege o ciclista, sobretudo nas subidas. Claro que depois é preciso investir nus bons travões ;-)
