    With the right gearing you can climb anything.
    No these are not legal as in they are not 250 watts, however , if you look at watts alone neither are the "legal" bikes like Bosch, Panasonic etc. The Bosch bikes are around 500+ watts.
    Watts does not matter , the important thing is to limit speed but also acceleration and it must be pedelec only , no throttle and must engage the motor only through force on the pedals.
    250 Watts wouldn't really pull you out of bed, of course as I said with the correct gearing you can climb anything but on very steep trails it could be painfully slow with only 250 watts.
    I have a Haibike EQ Trekking from 2013 with 45-50 Nm torque, it is good and has pulled me up 20-25% grade but they make you work because they have torque sensors, the harder you pedal the more power the motor gives making it feel a lot more natural.
    The BBS02 in the video has about 120 Nm torque and the larger BBSHD has 160 Nm, a far cry from the Bosch 45-50 that I have but the newer ones have up to 75 Nm.
    Legislators probably have no basic understanding of electronics/mechanics and come up with ridiculous limits like 250 watts, yes it gives you assistance, the bare minimum but it does not make sense to limit by watts alone because heavy riders, heavy cargo bikes all have the 250 watt limit which makes 0 sense.
    The important thing to remember is to ride responsibility no matter what you're riding. Just because someone has an accident on an ebike doesn't mean the cause was the ebike just like when a Tesla has an accident when in autopilot mode, you can't blame the car.......
    ebikes are great fun and I lost 20 kg on an ebike because it gave me incentive to get out and not be afraid of hills and wind.

      It's 250w continuous output, not peak power.
      Not very helpful as there is no specification over how long continuous is..............
      A throttle is legal as long as it doesn't take you past 6 mph.
      From my understanding most e bikes are illegal (including integrated bought ones), because the speed limit is changeable through button presses, rather than being "baked" into the firmware.
      I remember reading Bosche were doing something about that though.
      The 15 mph limit is stupid. 22, or power fading out from 15 to 22 would be better.
      It's really idiotic that a weirdo in licra can do 10 mph + faster than you, just because he doesn't have a motor.
      "ebikes are great fun and I lost 20 kg on an ebike because it gave me incentive to get out and not be afraid of hills and wind.
      "
      That is exactly why I will have one, when my battery BMS is found by the Post Office.

    • @e-bikebloggeruk3901
      @e-bikebloggeruk3901  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, thanks for your comment, I mainly use pedal assist, I have my BBS02 set at 9 levels of assist mainly using 4,5,6 but pump it up to level 9 on the larger hills for my daily work commute of between 19-25 miles (depending on my route) round trip which is also hilly but not like the hills in the video, I mainly use the throttle for a few seconds when setting off or for a bit of a speed boost, 90% of the time it’s pedal assist only. I find the pedal assist to be very good on my BBS02 but this is the only E-Bike I have ever ridden so can’t compare it with other types of E-Bike. I use a 48V - 11.4 amp-hour battery and have managed 32 miles and still have battery left after a casual Sunday ride.

      No. If you get caught , it is a big fine and prison if in an accident, plus points on your licence if you have one. The max you can ride on public roads is 250W , the BBS02 is 500-750W which is classed as a scooter. You wll be prosecuted for riding a moped without isnruance road tax, helmet.

    Hi, good video, I'm thinking of converting my carrera vengeance to a mid drive ebike. As you've already done it, did you have any trouble with the cables that go under the bottom bracket, or is there enough clearance for them to work?

    • @robertallport3126
      @robertallport3126 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew
      The front derailleur cable is removed completely along with the front derailleur. When your fitting the motor you can position it so the rear cable has plenty of room under the bottom bracket. The only slight issue I had was the screw that secures the cable guide under the bottom bracket actually protrudes into the bottom bracket, a quick file soon solved the issue. Good luck with your conversion I’ve done almost 7000 miles on mine now.

    • @andrewwilliams64aw
      @andrewwilliams64aw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert,
      Thanks for information about the screw. On another matter, do you have any trouble with the police, as it's higher powered than the law allows?

    • @robertallport3126
      @robertallport3126 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As with most of the Self Conversion Kits you can limit the Power and Speed to meet the law in the UK and in all honestly I find riding at 250 watt and keeping the powered speed below 15.5mph very relaxing, it will still climb the hills, just a little slower. But to answer your question I have had no encounters with the Police, in fact in all the time I’ve been riding the Bike I have only ever seen the Police twice. But I normally ride in power level 2 out of 5 so I don’t attract attention by going too fast and my trips are usually on quiet roads. If I was to ride in a Town Centre I think I would keep it at 250 watts as a safety issue.

      At the moment I have the Lekkie® Bling Ring 42 tooth Chain Ring on the bike but must admit I wish I'd chosen the 46 Tooth, it’s available from www.brightonebikes.co.uk My average speed is around 20mph but on a flat road with no wind I can reach 30mp without too much effort with the wind behind me 35mph, but 18 - 22mph is plenty fast enough for me. PS the chain ring used in the video was that standard 46 tooth that came with the kit, since using the Lekkie I have had no chain drops or slips.

      @e-bikebloggeruk3901  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am currently using the 42 tooth but wish I had stuck with the 46 tooth which is the original size that came with the BBS02 kit. I have tried the 52 tooth but found it had a little too much torque and speed for my casual style of riding. If you’re happy with the chain ring size you are currently using I’d stick with the same size. Depending on your bike frame in particular your Chainstays you may have to use spaces so the chain ring clears the Chainstays, the larger the tooth size the more spaces you may need, I just use washers as spaces. Also the larger the tooth size the more strain it will place on your motor and controller especially when setting off and on steep hills, setting off and climbing hills in a low gear is always a good idea. The Controller is the weakest part of the BBS range and can be damaged by too much strain or constantly using the throttle. I have also got an upgraded Controller from these guys which is supposed to take anything you can throw at it but I hav'ent had chance to try it yet.

    What size chain ring do you use?

      Hi, when the video was made I was using the standard Chainring that came with the kit; I forget how many teeth it had; I think it was 46. But since the chain drop I swapped to a 42 tooth Lekkie Chainring.

      Arthur Thompson Just go for a stack of shimano chains (slightly longer than your current chain). My 750w mid-drive costed me 2 chains over the last year. A belt would be better but they are extremely rare...

      @e-bikebloggeruk3901  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if you reduce the power to 250watt which is the lowest my BBS02 will go, it will still climb the hills but you would have to drop the gear to 1st or 2nd and the climb would be slower. I think I climbed the hills in the video in 3rd and 4th gear.

    mid drives can easily climb steep hills, hub motors on other hand almost never can or struggle.

      No no no! Don't listen to that nonsense! Trust Me, My hub drive will climb vertually anything, I know because I do it on, and off road every couple of days. And I'm not kidding you, Very steep hills!! Just check out My TH-cam/ Instagram channel instagram.com/likeher9/. Please don't believe this hub drives can't climb baloney.

      Hub drives - particularily rear-wheel-drive hubs can help you on steep hills, but it is still hard work. Trust me, i know, and i am looking to upgrade to a mid-drive bike as soon as i can because my rear wheel spokes keep on breaking and that is totally unacceptable.

    • @likeher9
      @likeher9 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PEMBYSGAMINGWORLD i had My rear wheel hand built £80 and its never broke a spoke since, obviously cheap Chinese build before. I have a Haibike xduro allmtn 2.0 with a Yamaha PW-X motor 80nm of torque. Remember, I have both a mid drive, and a hub drive. So these are actual facts. If they were both 250watt, the mid drive will climb much better. But My hub drive is 2000watt, with throttle, it destroys the 250watt mid drive climbing. It's fare to say though, that like for like, the mid drive has the edge on climbing. But make no mistake, powerful hub drives can definitely climb - big time. This entire subject is a case of swings and roundabouts though. They really do (each) do different things better. And mid drives are factually no more efficient than hub drives! But are way more complicated, and way more expensive.

      No the motor is very quiet. The only reason you may hear it on the video is because the camera is clamped to the bike frame. The tyres on the road make more noise than the motor.

    You do know that the BBS02 is illegal on public roads in the Uk (power limit of 250W) being 500-700 W ? You can be prosecuted for riding a scooter without plates, licence, insurance or a helmet. If you hit somebody can be sent to prison aswell as a big fine.
    You are encouraging people to break the law.

      For some people sarcasm need only be applied sparingly to illicit an appreciation of intent. But for others it seems no amount of embellishment in that regard will trigger a suitable cerebral response. For anyone considerably thicker than a lamp post who did not understand my previous contribution to this thread, I was being heavily sarcastic.
