My Commandant. I had just learned how to properly salute and was walking across the parade deck when a lot of brass headed toward my direction. I kept going and gave my first actual salute. "That's a sharp salute, Marine." One of them said. As I walked further an officer strode back to me, and said "Recruit, you just received a compliment from General PX Kelly, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps." I responded with "Sir, that's my first actual salute." The Officer grinned and said the Commandant would be very pleased to hear that." I still love the Marine Corps.
We must be about the same age. I was stationed at 8th & I St when P X Kelley took over from Barrow. I remember when Kelley had his photo in Charlies with the V neck t shirt.
At the 26:00 minute timeframe, you see the Marine Body Bearers. What they do is awesome. The Marines use 6 men instead of 8. They also carry the casket at shoulder height the entire time. Lastly, they are the only service that raises the the entire casket above their heads. So no man stands higher than you, before they lay you to rest. These men are dedicated professionals.
I was a "Plank Owner" at the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force Headquarters, Special Operations Capable, MacDill AFB., Tampa, FL, (RDJTF HDQTRS, SPEOPS), precursor to SOCOM. I was a Lance Corporal, heard two Officers at Marine Corps HDQTRS talking about how they needed to find some Enlisted Marines to fill these Billets followed them into their office and volunteered. LTGEN P.X. Kelley was the CINC, USAF, MGEN Taylor, and USA, BGEN Steiner were the rest of the command staff. General Kelley was by any amount of measure, the best Officer I ever served for. He saved my butt literally from some things that should never have been handed me, and he promoted me twice. His autographed picture still hangs on our living room wall. I still have all the photos of him holding our oldest Son at my awards ceremony for Joint Service Member of the Quarter and Year awards. An Army Captain told my Wife and I; we should not have brought him to the awards ceremony, General Kelly said, " nonsense, I'm a grandfather and this is the next Generation of Marine" and carried him around and played with him for most of the ceremony. When he left to become Commandant, he told me, "SGT Seaton, if you ever need to speak with me, drop me a line", truly a compassionate Man and a stellar Marine Officer. Semper Fidelis, General.
Wished I had experienced that kind of leadership in the army in my first snd only shothole post. I did my tour and said, no thanks, I can do better outside. At least I can quit and leave from a toxic company.
He was our last Distinguished Speaker at the Army Command and General Staff College in 1985. My classmates came to me after the visit and said "Let's get rid of all the generals in the Army and give us a few Marines like General Kelley." I was proud a Marine. He was incredible as a Marine and our Commandant.
I am a submariner. My brother in law was a captain in the Corps. He told me that P X Kelly was the standard to measure all Marines and all warriors. RIP general may God find use for your abilities on the other side of the veil.
General PX Kelly was the Commandant when I was in the Service....in 1993 after I had gotten out, he was the speaker at the Marine Corps Ball in Tampa Florida. I went up to meet him at 9 months pregnant and he touched my stomach and he said,"Oh Another Future Marine I See"...lol....He was a great Man..RIP
I met him and his family at the hospital about a year or two ago. he and his family were nice folks. we had a short conversation as we were both military, but different branches. my condolences.
My grandfather, formally known as General JK Davis and ACMC worked along side General PX Kelly as his Assistant Commandant. He passed about 6 months before General Kelly. Attending this type of funeral on May 5th 2021. Shall they meet again! Rest In Peace General Kelly. General Davis hopes to see you soon!
Although I never got to meet this man, I wish to say Thank You, sir. `From a grateful citizen of these United States that you so proudly served and protected.
I am Uruguayan, 82, and I think of all the young Marines who lost their lives in the Pacific during WW2. Wars should never happen. Thanks for this moving video.
I had met the General a number of times when I worked for Admiral James D. Watkins, CNO at the time, but it was a number of years later I saw him for the last time at Washington National Airport (Reagan). The General was waiting in line to check in for his flight, and it was the first time I saw him as a civilian citizen. We talked for a few minutes and he assured me he remembered me, but he met thousands of folks during his career. When I think of a Marine or meet a Marine, he's the yardstick I measure them against.
I just was transferred from a guard company to 3rd recon bn. I was called into the C.O.s office to be interviewed by a Marine officer from my hometown he was a major at that time .he was from west Roxbury I was from Roxbury .he asked me what we would do for fun on weekends I told him me and my guys would go over too west Roxbury and beat on the kids from west Roxbury we both had a good talk we both loved the U.S. MARINE CORPS . What a beautiful send off for General Kelly. First time witnessing a grateful army (USA Marine Corps) farewell for a General, the formalities of respect, care, traditions and admiration is shown to all of us. The old Irish lore of a rainfall on a persons funeral means General Kelly is in Heaven. RIP General Kelly. Amen

General when you get to heaven you will meet a Marine guarding the gates he is my brother my Marine as I was also 67 to 72, Semperfi sir you have a special place in our hearts all Marines and former Marines salute you.
I remember when my father was promoted to colonel and General Kelly was at the wetting down party that was given. He wrote a thank you note to my mother and my dad told her that she should frame the letter because the General was going to be the Commandant of the Marine Corps one day and that happened in 1974.
Armed Forces personnel of any country deserve full respect during their service, after retirement and when they leave this world for eternal peace as they safeguard their homeland from internal and external threats. May General’s soul rest in peace.

The echo of the 21 Gun Salute going through the rows of headstones is hauntingly beautiful (36:54). Rest in peace to Gen. Paul X. Kelley and the other servicemen/women. "If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven's scenes; They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines."

It's so sad when you think about it that so many people in the military have died in war like the soldiers who died on D-Day in 1944 in Omaha beach in France as they came ashore they got gunned down by Nazi machinegun fire while others made it back to the United States alive and had a family and lived out the rest of their lives while the dead are buried in foreign soil not knowing that those who went to war that they would never see their love ones again
