On this episode of the Dr. Tyna Show, I brought my friend Angelo Keely back on for a second round for a very important discussion on muscle and aging. Angelo’s previous appearance on the show “Amino Acids and Why You Need Them” where we covered protein and amino acid nutrition was an audience favorite. Essential amino acids, or EAA's as they’re commonly referred to, have continued to grow in popularity since that show aired. Considering the growing interest in the subject and debates about their efficacy and usefulness, I wanted to invite Angelo back to sort through what's legit and what's hype when it comes to the science of EAA’s.

Notes to mysel: 13:04, when protein gets old, it gets broken into amonoacids. 14:11, essential aminoacids. 17:52, BCAAs. 18:36, no, 3 doesn't work. 23:11, to cut calories maintaining muscle mass. 27:13, taking aminoacids or isolated protein before bed. 51:39, how much protein recommended. 1:08:32, the protein source itself is not all essential aminoacids. 1:11:11, taking essential aminoacids will promote the regeneration of new muscle and healthier muscle. 1:12:05, Consistency is what's more important; "just showing up".

I love using Like A Pro BCCA and EAA products. It also has electrolytes. I use it daily and before my strength training. I also utilized protein powders to hit my 250g of protein a day goal.

This was really informative! Thank you! I have a question - should I take both whey protein powder AND Kion amino acids? Or just one or the other?

I bought an essential amino acid supplement (tablets) that seemed to be good quality. It smells and tastes like ammonia (cat pee!)…im wondering if anyone can tell me - do all EAA supplements have this ammonia smell?

No, they don’t…at least not all of them. I’ve tried two brands with the 9 and one that was JUST one type of EAA. The singular one I tried smells and tastes bad- L arginine- the ones with 9-11 of them don’t smell weird.

Whey protein doesn't contain carnitine, carnosine, and other amazing beef proteins. Nothing is better than whole foods.

Not according to the guest on the show making up things and not citing any studies.

They aren’t talking about one or the other. They are talking about efficient ways, different tools for meeting heath and longevity goals. At no point does anyone say that any supplement is a “replacement” for whole foods.

Wny mixed meal beef protein inefficient compared to beef alone. Weird never heard this before. No citations, an assertion. A salesman not a scholar. 🏋🏻

Based on information from the podcast, the key reasons why mixed meal beef protein is less efficient compared to beef alone for stimulating muscle protein synthesis are:
1️⃣ Digestion and Absorption Rate: When beef protein is consumed as part of a mixed meal, other foods (such as broccoli and potatoes) can slow down the digestion and absorption of the protein. This delay means that the amino acids from the beef are released into the bloodstream more gradually, reducing the immediate availability of essential amino acids needed for muscle protein synthesis.
2️⃣ Competition for Digestion Resources: The body uses enzymes and other digestive resources to break down all components of a mixed meal. When beef protein is eaten alone, these resources are fully dedicated to digesting and absorbing the protein, leading to more efficient and faster utilization of its amino acids.
3️⃣ Free-Form Amino Acids: Research indicates that essential amino acids in free-form supplements are more effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis compared to whole food proteins or protein powders because free-form amino acids are already in their simplest form, allowing for immediate absorption and utilization by the muscles.
4️⃣ Aging and Protein Efficiency: As people age, their ability to digest and utilize protein efficiently decreases. Consuming protein in more readily absorbed forms (such as essential amino acids or whey protein isolates) can help overcome this diminished efficiency, leading to better maintenance and growth of lean muscle mass in older adults than whole food proteins.
5️⃣ Impact of Isolated Proteins: Isolated protein sources, such as whey protein isolates, have been shown to be significantly more effective than whole food proteins in stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Whey protein isolates are rapidly absorbed and contain a high concentration of essential amino acids, particularly leucine, which is crucial for initiating muscle protein synthesis.
6️⃣ Essential Amino Acids’ Superior Effect: Essential amino acids (EAA) supplements can have a far more significant impact on muscle protein synthesis than whole food proteins. The studies show that EAAs are three times more effective than whey protein isolates and up to 24-25 times more effective than whole food proteins when part of a mixed meal. This stark difference underscores the efficiency of amino acids in their free form compared to complex proteins that require digestion.
Therefore, the inefficiency of mixed meal beef protein compared to beef alone lies in the combined effects of slowed digestion, competition for digestive resources, and the superior efficiency of more easily absorbed protein forms like EAAs and whey isolates.

@charissamcswain9094 Thank-you for detailed response. I cannot disagree with you. Have been taking Beyond Raw Precision Amino from GNC, good price point, twice a day. Post workout and at bedtime. Also add a scoop of Orgain Collagen Peptides to each dose. Gaining muscle and Strength. At almost 70yrs I am oldest OG under the barbell at local YMCA. N of one works for me. Of course also enjoy a high protein diet. 🏊🏋‍♂️🦊
